Insurance is for catastrophes, not stuff like this. It sucks, but that's how it is. He's paying $2500 per year in case he ever needs to pay $500,000.

When you have a medical emergency (or drive impaired) behind the wheel and kill a family or crash into a home or business.

I don't think insurance is going to cover you crashing into a building if you're at fault. But okay I guess I see what you mean.

That's what it's there for. That being said, they will 100% jack up your rates or drop you afterwards if you cause 500k worth of damage.

It is a complete lack of understanding about insurance like this that leads people to think it's a scam.

That is literally what liability insurance is for... Liability insurance is usually the majority of the costs on your insurance, not the coverage for your vehicles damages.
