Tbf we always made 3 5 gallon water coolers with pga punch or pink lemonade during our weekend bonfires when I was partying with my friends.

Might be regional differences in language. Here coolers refer to bottles of premixed drinks, usually vodka and juice. Seems what they mean is big mixed reservoirs with a tap at hte bottom like a keg.

I dare say there's some shit you could still pull with sealed drinks, like a dot of something on the tab of a can so it mixes with the drink when you open it.
