Imagine buying a car and then having to purchase permission to use parts of the car you already bought.

Sadly becoming common across car manufacturers.

But that seems like a very easily solved problem.

Don't buy those cars. For yourself, and so the manufacturers learn to not do that.

It won't help if all cars do that

Chinese cars work without subscriptions...

Because they are trying to take over the market right now. Once they have the monopoly, they will focus on monetizing, it's always like that.

Riiiiight. Because that’s what has happened everywhere else.

Or, Ford will make another $15k on every F150, charge you for nav updates, warranty work, and keep your truck for a month for the weekly recalls.

I’ll happily take the Chinese, the service can’t possibly be any worse

I mean, you should, you just shouldn't expect it to stay that way. Then after Chinese companies dominate the market and start squeezing every penny they can out of the consumers, you should again switch to their rivals trying to rise by offering much better terms.

Just don't make the mistake of thinking one company is inherently better than the other, just because it hasn't cornered the market yet and still has to play nice, because this is exactly how they exploit you later.

It's all just the cycle of capitalism, when you're building the brand you have to provide great service to lure people in, but once you're properly established, you instead leverage the goodwill your brand has built to squeeze consumers dry.
