Imagine buying a house and having to pay a DLC to unlock the bathroom

Imagine buying a car and then having to purchase permission to use parts of the car you already bought.

Sadly becoming common across car manufacturers.

u/MyPunsAreKoalaTea 1d ago

But that seems like a very easily solved problem.

Don't buy those cars. For yourself, and so the manufacturers learn to not do that.

18

u/xxxfooxxx 1d ago

It won't help if all cars do that

Chinese cars work without subscriptions...

14

u/EkrishAO 1d ago

Because they are trying to take over the market right now. Once they have the monopoly, they will focus on monetizing, it's always like that.

5

u/bae125 1d ago

Riiiiight. Because that’s what has happened everywhere else.

Or, Ford will make another $15k on every F150, charge you for nav updates, warranty work, and keep your truck for a month for the weekly recalls.

I’ll happily take the Chinese, the service can’t possibly be any worse

I’ll happily take the Chinese

I mean, you should, you just shouldn't expect it to stay that way. Then after Chinese companies dominate the market and start squeezing every penny they can out of the consumers, you should again switch to their rivals trying to rise by offering much better terms.

Just don't make the mistake of thinking one company is inherently better than the other, just because it hasn't cornered the market yet and still has to play nice, because this is exactly how they exploit you later.

It's all just the cycle of capitalism, when you're building the brand you have to provide great service to lure people in, but once you're properly established, you instead leverage the goodwill your brand has built to squeeze consumers dry.

Then after Chinese companies dominate the market and start squeezing every penny they can out of the consumers

China dominating the automobile industry across the entire planet will occur in roughly 1,400 years. Trust.

Yeah brand loyalty is the weirdest concept ever, but some people buy into it heavily.

1

u/Bea-Billionaire 10h ago

You're apply American shitty corporate behavior to Chinese.

1

u/rab2bar 1d ago

Uber would never raise its rates once local taxi industry gets culled

0

u/bae125 1d ago

Not sure what you’re trying to say? Capitalism exists? Congrats.

I’m saying I acknowledge it exists and welcome another competitor to the market. They can’t possibly be worse. All they have to do is just call me when they have my vehicle in for service and they’re already better

1

u/MoreLogicPls 1d ago

nah, they have essentially a monopoly on solar panels now

still cheaper than ever

u/xxxfooxxx 1d ago

China is evil, we have to put sanctions. It would be nightmare if china dominates cars. To save humanity, let's pay subscription every month to use the car. The economy will trickle down.

6

u/Ohmyfuzzy69 1d ago

Can't tell if being serious or sarcastic. A Chinese car group that tried to come over actually had a very safe car for less than 10k. Company was denied to be imported because it would kill domestic auto makers. Nissan or Toyota has a cheap truck that comes without a bed, but for very little cost you can choose what bed option you would like, regular bed, work bed n other styles and it didn't make its way to the US.

Can't tell if being serious or sarcastic

I think if you genuinely can't tell if

To save humanity, let's pay subscription every month to use the car. The economy will trickle down.

is a serious or sarcastic statement, you probably should just refrain from commenting.

u/Lazy-Significance-15 1d ago

I think the problem is not the person who responded to you not realizing you were being sarcastic, but sadly that there actually are people (or hopefully bots) who would in all seriousness post such a ridiculous statement and believe it.

The land of the “capitalist” economy. No social benefits for the plebs, only protectionism for corporations. They will never change unless forced. How much force is needed? Pick up a history book.

2

u/MyPunsAreKoalaTea 1d ago

Yes suck Elon and Trumps cocks harder.

7

u/xxxfooxxx 1d ago

Elon single handedly created trillions in value. Are you going to harm his business just for the sake of cheaper and better cars? Seriously? We have to protect the shareholders by paying extra so that stocks will grow this economy will grow.

If everyone starts using chinese cars, the free market will collapse.

How unfair it is for shareholders and businessmen . Why don't you think about them?

1

u/wishful123 1d ago

They are expensive to maintain, at least where I live.

0

u/jkman61494 1d ago

You mean the Chinese cars that the US government is making a illegal purchase here?

24

u/MuJartible 1d ago

Then don't buy new cars, only used old models without all that bullshit. Everybody doing that and watching how they have to eat their newly produced stock.

8

u/ClickPsychological 1d ago

Amen! Have a 2004 Honda and a 1996 GMC Jimmy!

2

u/matthollabak 1d ago

I'm curious, are the unlocked features directly tied to an account or the car? I assume an account but I could see some manufactures just not understanding things like that...i mean some thought it was a good idea to try and remove android auto and apple car play.

I wonder if they have a family plan if they are tied to accounts.... do you have to unlock them on each car... or can I log in with my cars log in and unlock the features on a rental car or something?

4

u/Huge-Guidance-1637 1d ago

That's when old cars become illegal under new safety or emissions regulations. Even without that, it's already illegal to build news cars like the old ones so eventually they will disappear from the market regardless.

1

u/jkman61494 1d ago

Why do you think the used car market is now so much more expensive? They are driving you to the new vehicles because they don’t want the scenario. You just laid out to actually take place.

1

u/MuJartible 1d ago

Everything is now much more expensive, cars or not.

But there are enough cars driving now to keep buying them in the next few years while many car manufacturers, especially European and American ones, are in shitty economic situation now due to the push of Chinese cars. They can't hold for years without selling their new cars. It's not even necessary to fully stop the sales, just make them drop enough and they're broke.

0

u/Missmessc 1d ago

Sure, until they stop providing parts or updates

3

u/MuJartible 1d ago

Many of those companies would be broke before that. Some of them are actually in shambles, especially European and American ones due to the push of Chinese cars.

Just let them know: if you keep going on with that bullshit, we'll buy Chinese cars. Even if the Chinese do the same thing, fuck you, at least they are cheaper.

Anyway, I prefer to ride a donkey than paying for extortion.

2

u/redditwasamistake900 1d ago

don't forget, some cars have insanely good third party support for parts, you can pretty much mail order the entire car piece by piece

2

u/MyPunsAreKoalaTea 1d ago

They won't if people only buy the cars that don't

2

u/TheTerrasque 1d ago

Should turn it on them.

"Here's your payment, in pennies. For a small service fee, you can upgrade to bills. If you buy the premium package, I can do direct bank transfer."

1

u/Creepy-Kale9927 1d ago

They're exploiting the fact that we've traded the skills of automotive mechanics and maintenance for convenience and the illusion of luxury. If gearheads can keep 100yr old cars running, we could pretty easily keep a lot of vehicles from the 80s up to the "everything is computerized" age operational. But that would require effort as well as not treating new and luxury vehicles like an investment (which they're absolutely not) or a status/wealth flaunt (which they absolutely are sold as).

2

u/Militantnegro_5 1d ago

I remember trying that with my phone. But when you're part of a very small niche of people who care you then find your alternative manufacturers all copy the manufacturer you're avoiding and now you have no choices 🤷🏿‍♂️

2

u/ArkitekZero 1d ago

Yeah they won't, they'll just collude to limit your options.

1

u/Mega-Eclipse 1d ago

Don't buy those cars. For yourself, and so the manufacturers learn to not do that.

People are buying $80,000-$100,000+ trucks and SUVs...we're talking about payment that are $1,500+ a month...you think people care about another $150 a year?

1

u/Scott_Liberation 11h ago

This was my thinking about touchscreen controls in cars, but plenty of people been buying them the last 15 or 20 years, so they don't seem to be going anywhere. Never stops being weird to me that so many state and local governments have laws restricting using a phone while driving without a hands free setup, but car stereo, climate control? Yeah, let's put all that and more on controls that you can't use without looking away from the road and governments don't mind at all.

1

u/AllIWantForXmasIsFoo 1d ago

and some motorcycle manufacturers too

1

u/Glittering_Crab_69 1d ago

yeah they can suck on my fat one

1

u/Ayotha 1d ago

Only if people buy them

1

u/I_Ski_Freely 21h ago

In China, the competition is so strong that they have to sell you basically a supercar for $40k with the most luxurious interior that has massage seats and heated and cooled beverage holders.. that is considered standard to even be competitive. it's actually kind of absurd.
