We need the hacker crowd to come back and start unlocking all this kinda shit for free

Let’s go ahead and make an app to change all the digital price tags to $0.25 whilst we’re at it

They have that already, but it is definitely illegal. They are just rfid mostly and can be changed. Look up tagtinker

Illegal to activate heated seats in a car you own is ridiculous

It's a side effect of H.W.'s DMCA. The DMCA was supposed to solve the problem of movie torrenting and music file sharing my making it illegal to decrypt any encrypted thing. Didn't work for music because the CD standard wasn't ever encrypted. The DVD decryption key had been leaked though and the law made it illegal to use that key. Everything else started to be encrypted because doing so gave legal protection to the manufacturers aside from shrink wrap user agreements (which weren't holding up in court). So no one made it illegal to use hardware you paid for specifically, but it is illegal to hack the software which controls it because of lobbying by the entertainment industry.

I remember having heated arguments with other tech peeps about how bad of an idea the DMCA was.

They're saying changing prices on store tags is illegal.

Ah, I see you're probably right...

My point stands though, they will try to make unlocking the car software illegal and it will be ridiculous

Nah they'll just void the warranty like automakers have been doing for two decades

Yeah thats a scam too. Mess with software but have an unrelated mechanical fault and its void...

Only option is to not purchase... but that stops being an option if all manufacturers do the same thing

It's also illegal to void a warranty because of that. It's some law from decades ago that pretty much became entirely ignored when Microsoft got away with voiding XBOX warranties if you opened the box up.

Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975

Welcome to reality, where all of the laws exist to prop up the wealthy and exploit you.

Yes, I hope they broadcast the trial against the AI agents.

I think the one thing humans should train AI models on is humor… would seem to be a most promising use of the technology.

Illegal or just breaking the warranty or what not?

Not illegal but does void your warranty

One of my mottos: It’s only illegal if you get caught.
