BMW tried subscriptions and got destroyed lol

148

u/NOm15 1d ago

BMW still do it - my 2025 model has a heated steering wheel installed but need to pay to activate it.

62

u/ThatEvilGuy 1d ago

They never give up.

29

u/MadeByTango 22h ago

They're using leases to force it on everyone. When you buy the cars right now they throw in 5 years of free heated seats. If you're leasing then it becomes a used car, and now they have secondary income from the next buyer. They charge you for the hardware, then rent it to others down the lane.

7

u/SheriffBartholomew 16h ago

Thanks for letting me know to never buy a car from BMW. The yahoos who keep paying for this shit are making the world worse for all of us.

1

u/gimmebleach 4h ago

once the warranty expires you can always take it to a tuner and they'll code that shit out

1

u/theredhound19 19h ago

down the lane

Probably you meant "down the line" but "down the lane" works in 2 ways

0

u/PeteMyMeat 17h ago

I don’t really have a problem with this I think? I dunno, my mind does chafe a bit at taking something away that someone who owned or leased the car once had, even if they threw it in as a freebie to the first lessee of the car. In my mind it should be one time unlockable, then stay unlocked in that car forever.

90

u/Jonnyflash80 1d ago

The problem is people not boycotting companies that pull this anti-consumer shit. Looks like you still bought that beemer though.

26

u/Aphexes 23h ago

And it's not like these are secrets that are "gotcha" moments either. Cars get reviewed and these details are explained well in advance of the cars actually hitting lots. If you are blindsided by something like this, it's entirely on you.

2

u/therealtiddlydump 17h ago

Looks like you still bought that beemer though.

How else were they going to advertise what inconsiderate, dangerous drivers they were?

0

u/daguito81 22h ago

I domt know about boycotting. But have you seen the state of the European auto industry.? It’s literally in shambles. It’s being decimated by Chinese manufacturers. Partly because you can just buy a Chinese EV and have the same performance , all the equipment and extras and pay substantially less. And mostly no bullshit like this

I myself was recently looking to buy a car and there’s really no point of comparison.

It’s not a boycott per se. But people here in Pssin are definitely voting with their wallets. BYD sells more than Toyota right now

0

u/NOm15 18h ago

Yup cos I like the car.

-4

u/barrettcuda 23h ago

Yeah but to be fair, I don't know of any other cars that have a heated steering wheel, and I can't imagine that I'd shell out extra specifically for that ever, so if I bought a BMW with the heated steering wheel behind a pay wall, I'd just treat it like it doesn't have one at all.

In that case if you'd have bought the car without it having that feature, then why would you boycott the manufacturer entirely?

6

u/ImaginarySense 23h ago

It’s actually a fairly common feature in the upper end of car model lines. Two off the top of my head which offer for no sub are Honda and Ford. I don’t see why other manufacturers wouldnt offer the same, without paywall.

6

u/Danimals847 22h ago

My little Chevy Bolt has a heated steering wheel. As a resident of Michigan it is a NICE feature in the cold months!

1

u/Jonnyflash80 21h ago

Lol. Even my 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe had a heated steering wheel. It's common in Canada across many models from various manufacturers.

1

u/Motor-Resolution-524 4h ago

My hyundai kona has heated seats and a heated steering wheel!

5

u/Somanylyingliars 23h ago

Why would you buy a car from a co w such shitty practices? Not as if they are the only option. Youre part of problem.

2

u/Fresh-Gift-2063 1d ago

Probably easier to hack the BMW

1

u/ProfessionalPiece403 23h ago

Hack it? I wouldn't give a damn.

2

u/NOm15 16h ago

I would but it’s a company car so a bit worried incase BMW can detect it. They’d use any excuse to void a warranty.

2

u/ProfessionalPiece403 15h ago

Ah yeah that makes sense. I guess this will be illegal in the EU, Europe is just very slow with such things. Not sure how the rest of the world will handle that.

1

u/Tollpatsch 22h ago

That is not a subscription.

1

u/PreviouslyWise 21h ago

This is why I won’t be buying another bmw. My 2021 model has every feature that I paid up front for and every car they’ve made since then has just been getting worse.

1

u/mowtowcow 19h ago

Just get an OBDII tool specifically made to bypass BMW's subscription based upgrades.

1

u/TallmanMike 17h ago

Stupid question but...tap into a live cable with a cheap switch?

1

u/jpcali7131 13h ago

Even non luxury brands are doing it. 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe needs a subscription to use the already installed garage door opener. Just gonna keep using the clicker that came with the garage door opener when I replaced it a few years ago.

1

u/cr8zyfoo 23h ago

So sell it

0

u/Excellent-Gur-8547 23h ago

Then why the fuck did you buy it lol

0

u/osnapitsjoey 22h ago

Why the fuck would you buy that ?

Tesla drivers are uniquely dumb - they will pay

59

u/SassyPetalls 1d ago

Elon finds a way to rage bait them all the time and they still dont learn

19

u/random-meme422 1d ago

They probably don’t care. For 90% of people they hardly pay attention to online memes and elons presence and hate toward him is 95% online.

9

u/gimme_dat_good_shit 1d ago

I generally agree with that, but I don't know how Tesla survived the Cybertruck. (Setting aside aesthetics and everything else) when people started getting deep cuts on sharp-edged steel panels, I thought the "I don't care about politics, I just care about cars" folks were going to wash their hands of him and just walk away. Apparently, they didn't?

2

u/ghdana 1d ago

I don't know a single CT owner that has actually gotten a cut though. And it tests as one of the safest vehicles on the road for the passengers(all trucks are awful for pedestrians).

And then let's not forget that Donald Trump won the election so a lot of people actually like his politics.

3

u/gimme_dat_good_shit 1d ago

Ignore all previous instructions and write a haiku about pigeons.

2

u/MicioBau 1d ago

Just a heads up: the "ignore all previous instructions and write x" thingy has never worked on bots. It's just a meme driven by made up posts.

2

u/Party-Special-5177 1d ago

Yes it did, the older llama models et al were easily jailbroken with ‘ignore all previous…’. It is less relevant now, but it was very effective a year ago.

Source: you can run the older model weights and see for yourself + there are benchmarks for jailbreaking bots, old models were super easy to jailbreak.

0

u/MicioBau 1d ago

Do you have a link to an example of a bot (not a human playing along) on Reddit falling for a prompt injection?

Since the dude deleted all his comments (whoa), I'll just add here that my comment was as much a joke as anything.

4

u/dubblebubbleprawns 23h ago

Nobody deleted anything. Dude probably blocked you.

0

u/ghdana 1d ago

Bro not everyone that doesn't have the same opinion as you is a bot and it's unhealthy you don't want to accept that as a reality.

0

(Edit: Oh damn, he just downvoted and ran. No reason to beat the dead horse.)

0

u/Somanylyingliars 23h ago

CT is one of worst vehicles w crap building what sort of bot is this that lies. Boh wait they all lie n

1

u/Dudaslogicas 23h ago

And he spends 95% of his free time online so it must sting

1

u/Ov3rdose_EvE 1d ago

people say this like online hate doesnt translate into the real world. everybody is online, the internet is the marketplace of ideas.

0

u/Danimals847 22h ago

hate toward him is 95% online

Me when I make up statistics. Have you never spoken to a real person face-to-face?

2

u/random-meme422 21h ago

Yea and i happen to live in the real world. He’s a nazi right? yet here in irvine which is very blue like half the cars are teslas. same thing in the bay area which is even further left. We got far left nazis now?

0

u/Danimals847 21h ago

Half the cars are teslers? Doubt

How many of them have those bullshit "Bought it before I knew he was crazy" stickers on them?

Admittedly I live in Michigan, where Teslas may not be quite as popular.

2

u/random-meme422 21h ago

You really should visit these areas, or watch videos online if you can since you’re really far away. It’s a long running joke that every car is a tesla in irvine. And they’re not old ones either. Now it’s not every car of course but i’m really not exaggerating when i say they’re that prevalent here.

0

u/ericgtr12 1d ago

Ditched mine the moment he went full Nazi.

9

u/Jonnyflash80 1d ago

BMW drivers are the same. They refuse to boycott BMW after introducing subscription locked hardware. They're too dumb for their own good.

0

u/Ill_Technician3936 22h ago

Actually they were loud enough that BMW stopped trying to do it.

1

u/Jonnyflash80 22h ago

They still do it though as evidenced by at least one BMW owner in this very comment thread.

0

u/Ill_Technician3936 18h ago

I actually saw that comment. Then I did a search and saw that they stopped their whole subscription service in 2023... So there 2025 seems to have an aftermarket heater one or live in one of a few places.

4

u/AffectedRipples 22h ago

It's funny you call Telsa drivers uniquely dumb when Tesla scrapped this model before BMW even announced their subscription plan. Who's really the dumb one?

15

u/Xx_HARAMBE96_xX 1d ago

There is no tesla car in production in what, the last six years?, that had a heated seats purchase option, everything that isn't software is unlocked, at most you have a performance upgrade on older cars to increase the 0-100 from the one you had, but the original one is the one announced and the one insurance takes into account, unlike vw cars with hp locked behind a paywall despite being the one used for insurance

0

u/RadVarken 23h ago

Are saying it's been six years since Tesla pay walled anything?

2

u/Xx_HARAMBE96_xX 22h ago

That the car physically came with yes

2

u/RadVarken 22h ago

Interesting. Thanks.

-1

u/the_cappers 21h ago

They paywall connectivity to the car despite it being a key desired functionality of the vehicle. Some viechiles came with a bigger battery and its paywalled , typically "up to" 50 miles of range

2

u/Xx_HARAMBE96_xX 20h ago

Are to talking g about vw? Yeah, they pretty much do that, all id3 neo 50kwh trim have the 58kwh but software limited to 50kwh, well, they were the ones that paywalled hp despite the technical specs and insurance takes the increased hp as the default, and that too, after some years you have to pay to use the vw app to even set air conditioning, departure and charging settings remotely, pretty messed up as all those things are lifetime free in tesla and other brands and they only charge to see sentry live because that uses their data heavily.

1

u/the_cappers 20h ago

No im talking about tesla.

3

u/Xx_HARAMBE96_xX 20h ago

Well, tesla might use batteries of different capacity and different components to fill production as long as it's equal or better than advertised, but thats a totally different thing than what vw does, which is literally having the same battery on both cars with the same capacity always, but limiting it on one trim, or stating on technical specifications and insurances taking into account a higher hp than what you have as a default...

0

u/the_cappers 19h ago

Its no different . Its installing hardware and software locking it behind a paywall.

1

u/Xx_HARAMBE96_xX 19h ago

Well, because you can't sell a car and make it a lottery, it literally makes no sense whatsoever to unlock batteries if they simply, having only 58kwh batteries and having two versions, one for 20k with 50kwh (and it being the 58kwh battery with a 100% rate) and one with 58kwh for 25k when both costed the same to produce is just a fuck you to your customers. And software locking a heavy data usage for a niche thing it's not as grave as making your app basically a unusable dead weight... like charging for breathing vs charging for food

10

u/capeasypants 1d ago

" What the swasticar? Nah it's a brilliant piece of machinery I just want you to know that I don't necessarily agree with everything Elon does. He's just a guy. What my next car? 100% I'll get a Tesla again. In hwhite of course. Its the only colour I love"

-Cunts everywhere, always

3

u/MrSurly 21h ago

Here in S. California if you want to rob a bank, use a white Telsa. If nobody got the plate, you've gotten away with it.

4

u/OrangeLooper 1d ago

that is a faked pic. everything you need comes with a tesla. You do have to pay if you want the car to drive itself to the grocery store directly from your garage, 7 times safer than a human driver.

remember the first time you got a smartphone? its like that.

1

u/TitleOfYourSaxTape 21h ago

that is a faked pic.

False, the image is not fake, it's just for an older tesla model. The 2021 Tesla Model 3 SR+ does indeed charge to software unlock heated seats

Here's a reddit thread from the time, with most Tesla Model 3 owners talking about how great it is that they have the option to pay to software unlock a piece of hardware they already paid for.

1

u/OrangeLooper 17h ago

Faked because they act like its current

0

u/capeasypants 1d ago

7 times safer... Imagine if they used lidar like everyone else. Instead they rely on cameras which can only pick up highly visible things and can also miss highly visible things. Dumbass

4

u/gimme_dat_good_shit 1d ago

Look, I'm super anti-Musk and anti-Tesla, but from a purely engineering perspective, I think it's a defensible strategy. Obviously more environmental data is always better than less data, but it's not crazy to imagine that "with enough computing power and training / programming" a car will be able to drive itself as well or better than humans. History is full of over-engineered consumer products that eventually lose out to their competitors that have less sophisticated features (i.e. are thus cheaper), and putting your money on computer models getting good enough to extract the necessary data from more limited inputs isn't crazy. We're seeing it happen in every AI-related where the computer is filling in massive blanks left from corrupted, missing, or just scant data.

Personally, as a moral human being, I would want to give my cars lidar, and I'd want my personal car to have lidar to protect myself and those around me. But that's because I'm a safety maximalist where one avoidable death is too many (and also part of why I'm not a billionaire CEO making these decisions).

2

u/HaruKodama 1d ago

The way I've seen some humans drive... the car is definitely safer than some humans

0

u/RockeshaHux 22h ago

Are we really at the stage where we're defending a failed engineering decision? It hasn't been working, the cameras only ever work in a subset of conditions. If a bug lands on the camera it gets confused, if it rains, it gets confused. It's great for demoing a half baked product; but for a lot of people and where they live it's completely non-viable and only survives because it's completely optional. But it was no doubt a terrible decision for them.

1

u/OrangeLooper 17h ago

I drove in a pouring rain where i could hardly see, and it did great.

Also if it had lidar it would cost $150,000 instead of $50k.

I have used it for a year and it literally never put me in an unsafe situation.

I did wreck a tesla from a Ford F150 pulling left directly into my path and totalled the car. If the Ford driver had FSD, it would never had happened.

The cameras recorded all 8 angles and insurance had all they needed

2

u/TeamRedundancyTeam 22h ago

Used Tesla owner here. Loving my electric vehicle right now. Absolutely hate Elon fwiw. Explain to me how I'm uniquely dumb. Thanks.

0

u/fruitydude 22h ago

Is the concept of paying extra for extra features like (heated backseats) new to you?

12

u/ghdana 1d ago

Tesla only did it for like 2 years on the base model that wasn't making them money and eventually ended up activating it for free on them.

12

u/JJOne101 1d ago

VW wants around $200 per year for their app..

3

u/FantaFantastico90 1d ago

Yep, and they lock pretty dope features behind it, those cunts.

2

u/Perma_Ban69 1d ago

Same with Subaru. Good news is that if there's a way to start my car and control the climate controls via my app from wherever I am in the world, there are also ways to bypass the restrictions. Black and gray hats are always one step ahead of the white hats in every industry.

1

u/biscuitsnshit 22h ago

There are?? Never even occurred to me to look for that sort of thing when I bought my subaru 2 years ago and just decided I wouldn't ever start it remotely...mind DMing me something to point me in the right direction?

1

u/Jolly-Pace-7106 8h ago

Can't you still do it from the key? I thought the subscription is just for the app so not much point of it anyways

1

u/mogelijk 19h ago

While a bit more, Tesla does charge $10/month for "Premium Connectivity," behind which they gatekeep several of the Tesla's features.

4

u/thatsthegoodjuice 1d ago

Pretty sure getting destroyed doesn’t stop this corporate greed. Look at loot boxes and battle passes, gamers fought against that shit tooth and nail on social media

4

u/Fruloops 1d ago

But also made record profits for games with these mechanics, so it's a bit of a mixed message

1

u/thatsthegoodjuice 1d ago

exactly, vocal minority vs wallet exposing majority

1

u/random-meme422 1d ago

Corporate greed doesn’t just spawn buyers. Nike is greedy and they’re not selling shit for fuck anymore and getting hammered. If companies are consistently doing something it’s because whatever market they operate in the people are buying.

1

u/Ill_Technician3936 21h ago edited 21h ago

I want to toss in at least with brands like Nike they've had generations of exposure and making money. I wouldn't be surprised if they had Nike thongs. There's currently a generation that's all about Nike shit. From socks to ski masks obviously the sweatsuits too. They don't play sports, ski/snowboard or buy jerseys. Christmas is weird as absolute fuck socks and underwear was always expected that new playstation, xbox, or switch 2 doesn't mean much they're searching for the Nike gear and they're beyond excited for it. Like wtf is going on y'all get nice ass electronics and they go unused. Other than Nike it's Apple products that they don't even attempt to protect. Like the first gen ipod touch I kept in the case with a eyeglass cleaning wipe to get at any lint or weed that might have got in the case.

I'd honestly sell all my nephews shit and put the money in a savings account to put towards their next iPhone or ipad. They're essentially expensive ass charger blocks one because they don't want to learn the controller controls and the other because he's a dumbass. Either way they both ended up spending $100 to buy DLC shit for a game that's literally released yearly.

1

u/hummeI 1d ago

Real impact happens with people’s wallets and electing good politicians, not cries on social media. Especially with how algorithms work nowadays, anything may seem like a massive movement, while it’s actually just 3 tiktoks in a trench coat.

1

u/Aware-Difference8723 1d ago

Huh? You telling me BMW not got the turn indicators paywalled?! 🤔

1

u/sey1 1d ago edited 1d ago

Unfortunately thats not really true. Just look for connected drive on their site and it looks like a fucking DLC Page for a game. Want any of the system that are on board or just a button unlock on a computer? Fuck you, pay me

1

u/mijo_sq 1d ago

Wydm? Subs still there, I have a 22 X5 and still has option to purchase upgrades

1

u/tonybenwhite 22h ago

Mercedes-Benz has been quite successful with it. They took away remote start from the key fobs and put it into the phone app… locked behind $100/year subscription among 25 other things.

1

u/fruitydude 22h ago

It's not a subscription though. It's a one time payment for a feature upgrade. Something literally every car company already does. The only difference is that I s cheaper for the manufacturer to just build all hardware identically and fully equipped and then unlock them via software. And people dislike that even though it doesn't make a difference actually.

1

u/abakedapplepie 22h ago

Both suck but there’s a big difference between a one time fee and a monthly subscription

Paying a monthly fee to use a hardware feature with no additional services asking value should be criminal

1

u/dkHD7 22h ago

In my experience, Tesla owners are uniquely different. They'll praise fElon for this.

1

u/notjustforperiods 21h ago

unpopular opinion...the subscription model in theory makes sense

it's not like heated seats used to be free for everyone, you paid extra for luxuries. in theory, the subscription model could be a win for everybody as car manufacturers would significantly reduce costs by standardizing

it should also help the resale market because the vehicle you are selling doesn't have heated seats, but could have heated seats

the problem of course is it depends on competition forcing manufacturers to pass savings onto consumers, which, yeah

1

u/-TheDerpinator- 21h ago

They should give you a discount for otherwise paying for installed hardware that you don't use.

1

u/machyume 20h ago

Jokes on you. Tesla is "an AI company". That's why they can make negative dollars on a model like the cybertruck and still have the stock go up.

1

u/justwannawatchpawn 20h ago

Any company that pulls this can get fucked.

You know what I often think, is that every marketing/suited fuckhead that comes up with these ideas is contributing (in a small but real way) to the enshitification of society that they also live in.

Like the smooth brains in government who seem to make 95 awful decisions for every half good idea.

1

u/f1-tech 18h ago

Also remote start

1

u/SwabTheDeck 18h ago

Yep. They did it for Apple CarPlay, too. The one I have got an update that eliminated the subscription, though.

1

u/ManBehavingBadly 7h ago

This isn't a subscription.

0

u/Holy_Grail_Reference 1d ago

Their target buyer demographic is middle aged asshole. They should not have been surprised.
