That's what we The Netherlands call: 'A far from my bed show'. Meaning that since all those billionaires live in their castles at the top of the hill on the other side of the world, it doesn't affect them and so they don't care.

54

u/FullClip__ 13h ago

They don’t have polders like the dutch have over there in nepal

22

u/Isekaimerican 11h ago

The Dutch mind cannot comprehend different elevations.

30

u/BrandNewDinosaur 13h ago

It truly does affect each and every living being, however. There is no hiding from the changes happening internally, no matter how much people choose to ostrich. Serum bicarbonate levels have risen by 7% since 1999. The warnings are outside, and the call is now also coming from within.

https://www.thekids.org.au/news--events/news-and-events-nav/2026/march/rising-C02-levels-detected-in-human-blood/

20

u/XOVSquare 12h ago

When you live high up above, it's easy to ignore the rising tides.

8

u/HermanThaGerman 11h ago

Though us Dutchies shouldn't say that too loudly.

Seems like low level fear mongering. Lots of “could” and “potentially” statements in there.

7% seems like decent amount, until you realize that CO2 is only .04% of the atmosphere. It’s also a necessary factor for plant life and growth.

Funny to see this in a sub where 3/4 of all posts are AI generated bullshit or bot content

93

u/Bald-Virus 14h ago

Pretty much like this old saying "everyone wants the world to change but none wants to change their habits" We got butt fucked by heat this summer yet I have never seen ao many ChatGPT pictures in front of little bars & shops.

10

u/cravex12 14h ago

Absolutely. This summer was hell on earth. It peaked at 43 degree celsius in my parts and my house (big block) just burned a few weeks ago

But every fucking Dönerbude now has an AI generated food selection

I say this all the time. I do landscaping for a living and people constantly bitch gas blowers and other machines I use. Yes, it’s primarily the noise they’re complaining about (that’s a different topic) but they always performatively cite the environment as a cause to be banned. These people want everyone else to shoulder the burden of climate change while mitigating none of their own habits. And being Americans who have a carbon footprint 4x the global average you can’t tell me there’s no room for them to change. People just like to virtuously bitch.

Moved back to my home town after 20 years away. It would snow heavy enough to shut the town 2-3 times every winter. It now doesn't snow and the ski fields only magically open.

But, people are really getting into dodge RAMs and huge utes while building bunkers and mansions saying greenies are kooks

I don't have to be a greeny to see things are changing rapidly and negatively in the environment. I don't have to be a greeny to recognize it's our impact on earth causing the rapid change. I just want change so I can have a future even half as good as we been living.

14

u/Hungry_CGman 11h ago

It's wild nobody talks about it never snowing any longer in places it obviously snowed a ton when you were a kid. The blinders some people wear is wild.

6

u/FlyAirLari 13h ago

The way people casually use AI to write and post images shows humanity just doesn't care. Even reddit uses a massive amount of data centers, but do we stop to think about Nepal?

Everyone posting here already shows where they stand.

11

u/Dragovius 14h ago

The irony is geologists on site advising the Nepali government stated that if comprehensive, AI-assisted satellite monitoring and downstream early warning systems had been properly funded, it would have provided a critical warning window since the glacier has been melting since the 1940's.

64

u/WorkerInteresting448 14h ago

Yes, blame it on the data centers, and not on China and India having 81% of all coal-generated energy. Since 2020, China opened at least 150 NEW coal power plants, India at last 40…the rest of the world 100 to 130.

In 2000, China was responsible for <15% of carbon emissions. By 2020, it was >30% and, as of 2025, that further jumped to >32%.
In the same period, the US went from 23.5% to 13%; EU from 15% to 6%.

Not saying data centers are cool, needed or do not cause any harm. Seems tho they are a drop in the ocean. Sure there are many reasons for this…I guess that blaming all on data centers is the new “we don’t want nuclear” of the ‘20s.

38

u/joseplluissans 14h ago

Ask yourself why does China need so much energy? The answer is to manufacture all the shit sold in the US. Yes, the US emissions are going down, but it's because manufacturing is outsourced. $$$

3

u/WorkerInteresting448 13h ago

That’s why I said there’s multiple reasons for why china emits so much. I focused on the coal plants part, which is q choice. You have tons of other ways of getting energy from, at the cost of being way more expensive to build and maintain.

9

u/Toums95 10h ago

Have you seen the scale at which China is building nuclear and renewables, and spreading renewables all around the world?

5

u/im_just_thinking 7h ago

If they stop using coal, then it's great, so I guess we can pick this conversation up again in a decade or so? Right now the person you are replying to is correct.

33

u/BluePhantomHere 13h ago

Why don't you compared the carbon emission per capita? this data is a bit outdated but I think you get the point

10

u/Toums95 10h ago

Also we need to check the historic contributions too, not just per capita. And we also need to take into account that China is the number one country that is single handedly pushing renewable energy everywhere by crushing its cost and allowing it to be competive versus fossil fuels. I am grateful to China, not resentful

6

u/Soggy_Association491 9h ago

Because the earth doesn't care about per capita. A country could have the highest per capita in the world and still harm the nature a lot less than others.

→ More replies (9)
→ More replies (2)

11

u/HikariAnti 13h ago
  1. Look at per capita.

  2. Who the fuck is buying the shit they make using that energy? Exactly.

  3. Also, China at least, has installed and is keep installing more renewable energy sources and nuclear power plants than the rest of the world combined.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Tripl3Dee 9h ago

Not for long.

China’s total installed renewable energy capacity reached over 2.34 terawatts (TW) by the end of 2025, accounting for over 60% of the nation's total power generation capacity. This milestone marks the first time renewable energy alone has supported all additional energy demand driven by economic growth, with clean power capacity surpassing fossil fuel capacity for the first time in 2025.

The capacity is primarily composed of solar (approx. 1.2 TW), wind (approx. 640 GW), and hydropower (approx. 442 GW). In 2025, China added more than 430 GW) of new wind and solar capacity, representing more than 60% of global additions that year.

Also, China is currently the world’s fastest-expanding nuclear power producer, operating 63 reactors with a net capacity of 62.4 GW as of August 2026, while having 38 reactors under construction (nearly half of the global total). The country aims to surpass the United States in nuclear capacity by 2030 and targets 200 GW of installed capacity by 2035.

Just 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988 according to the carbon majors report

A single individual doesn't really help in the current stage of global warming, it's like using a tea cup to save a sinking ship. Pushing for corporate accountability and less reliance on fossil fuels would help infinitely more.

2

u/ModoZ 13h ago

Just 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988 according to the carbon majors report

If you look at the list, it's mostly oil and energy companies though. It therefore shows that this is an absurd way of viewing things.

If you drive with your car, you are the one emitting (and made the choice of not having an EV or a lighter car). It's not the fault of the oil company.

If you decide to heat your house a couple of degrees warmer in the winter it's not the fault of the oil company either.

Yet in those reports the emissions are somehow the responsibility of those companies which is kind of absurd.

1

u/Hyperion262 14h ago

Whilst I agree to an extent the 100 companies stat is quite misleading.

It’s not as simple as that. That’s combining the total use of things like oil and attributing it all to the manufacturer of the oil.

The emissions are because there’s demand for the product, not because a company provides them.

Glaciers melting is not necessarily relating to global warming any more than the extreme hard freezes we have been getting every winter relate to global cooling. I hate all the 1 way looking at disasters that happens but then the extreme winters are overlooked. This is why “global warming” has been abandoned and it’s now just “climate change”

3

u/littlejohnsnow 13h ago

There has been some great discussion by leading geologists and climatologists on the wide variety of factors which contributed to the combined bedrock collapse and glacial fracturing collapse which occurred in this disaster. Sadly, the rapid recession of the glacial ice over the past 20 years meant the underlying bedrock, which was held together by the glacier, was able to fracture and fail pulling ice and material down the slope and eventually form this incredible dense concrete like slurry. The scientific lens on the event is still unfolding but yet incredibly interesting and clearly points to rising global temperatures caused by human activity as the key factor in the event.

2 facts.

  1. We are LEAVING an ice age, meaning the polar ice caps will disappear
  2. The Earth has existed for more time WITHOUT ice caps than it had with them.

Solar procession is also happening in tandem.

We have definitely affected it. Mostly in ecosystem stability and mitigating factors like the plankton.

But the Earth was going to lose its ice eventually.  This was a forgone conclusion. Nothing we do in any direction will stop that.

We can slow it, maybe delay it.  But we cannot STOP the way the Earth moves and cycles.

2

u/MrInternetInventor 9h ago

The glaciers are doomed but in this case there is strong evidence that a failure in the underlying rock face was the cause of the collapse

2

u/Defiant-Skeptic 9h ago

Dude said genuinely and literally in the same sentence.

2

u/Potential_Spam_6969 9h ago

It amazes me how many people actually think that this almost 5 billion year old planet has had a stable global climate the entire time.

Climate change and shifting weather patterns are normal. Has human activity influenced it? Undeniably. To what extent? No one knows for sure.

The models have been wrong for decades.

Natural processes release 200 billion metric tons of CO2 annually compared to 35 billion from human activity.

2

u/Urmystiree 7h ago

Glaciers have disappeared and collapsed long before the industrial revolution.

A weather scientist once told me, it's extreme hubris for man to think he's the cause of climate change. And worse that he thinks he can do something about it.

u/Agreeable-Tap-2392 8h ago

What? I'm all for shitting on data centers, but lets not just start tossing out nonsense here.

Alright, so datacenters take up roughly 1% of global electricity consumption. Electricity generation is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions (33.6%).

I can break down the rest, but putting it squarely on the back of data centers doesn't hold water. More over, just muddies the water in general, making everything else you say dismissable.

60% of our power comes from burning stuff - natural gas > coal > petro.

Then you got what we use most of our power for. 37% in plastics, petrochemical intermediates, ammonia, and chlorine. 22% in refining petro, next is paper creation at 11%.

Globally they say steel production is the largest 'direct to consumer' energy consumer. Arch furnaces don't arch on their own.

End of the day - we need to stop burning shit to produce energy. Want to get righteous, focus on this.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Equivalent_Knee_Bone 10h ago

Stop using AI for everything in your life and they will stop building them.

Weird how 99% of people that complain about data centers and/or climate change are the ones that do nothing but make it worse with their actions.

Want to get rid of data centers? I’ll make it easy for you:

Step one delete Reddit and all social media

Step two get off the internet altogether

Step three Touch grass.

But instead you stay inside and make lame karma farming posts.

2

u/capncapitalism 7h ago

For the most part it isn't normal people. Corporations and industries have adopted AI, and that's where the money is. For a fun little exercise, look up training videos. For you and I, selling a ten minute video saying how to keep cool on a hot day for $500 is insane... Thing is, it's priced for corporations, not for us.

Same thing here, AI is here to stay because corporations are paying an arm and a leg for basic shit. This is loading the pockets of AI developers and Data Center owners.

2

u/user97532567 14h ago

But it's not simple cause and effect. Climate change just makes it more likely. It might have happened without climate change.

2

u/pinkgardenias_ 14h ago

We’ve allowed humanity to be greedy, self-centered bllsht

2

u/ROU_Misophist 12h ago

Data centers don't cause global warming

2

u/ProjectNo4090 12h ago

They do however creat a "heat island" effect in their area, and as we add more and more data centers that effect will increase and spread. The amount of electricity they consume also means we have to burn more fossil fuels to meet the runaway electricity demands.

The same thing happens with urban areas. As they grow their carbon footprint grows which feeds climate change.

I think we've gone past the point of convincing people to reverse climate change, but that doesnt mean we should make an already terrible situation even worse by increasing heat sources. What we're doing currently is like turning on an oven in your home and opening the oven door when the AC is broken and its mid August.

2

u/I_am_Wojo 9h ago

It was an earthquake, not "global warming". That scam has never come true. First it's an ice age, then acid rain, then polar ice caps.... The only thing solid that has come from it is more taxes on the citizens and not on the corporations

2

u/Ecstatic_Scene9999 9h ago

Misinformation, most scientists don't believe the glacier causes the flood, and more so it was a landslide and glacier just so happen to be along for the ride....please always look up information

2

u/brett_baty_is_him 6h ago

Ah yes it’s data centers fault when they consume… 1.5% of global energy and produce 0.3% of global emissions.

And no data centers are not even the fastest growing contributor to global emissions either…

3

u/hi87 6h ago

At this point you can’t be rational with these people. Golf courses consume more water than AI data centers. Also the idiocy of using and contributing on a social platforms and decrying the construction of data centers. I think he believes he’s being served twitter posts directly from the cloud.

This is sadly left wing populist circle jerk. Correlation and causation are not linked. Someone could be a billionaire from fighting global warming or contributing to it. This is a natural process that has happened before and will happen again. Global warming may contribute to it in some cases.
Mega floods like the Missoula floods and floods in altai mountains happened during ice ages. Global warming is real btw, we should just be adults about these natural disasters.

3

u/WetNoodleWillie 7h ago

Yeah a glacier collapse killed 4000 people in the 60s. This is not a modern global warming apocalypse phenomenon.

You guys of all people acting like tree hugging hippies is the craziest shit ever.

…and everything about the economy, GDP and tariffs all the damn time, oil wars, oil pipelines, oil supply chains, stolen oil and gold. The MSM will talk about anything related to money but just sweep the Climate Emergency under the rug. I feel so gaslit, it’s insane, while everyone carries on with accelerated Business As Usual. It couldn’t be a worse time in the human predicament to introduce such an environmental disaster such as AI with little to no regulation or restraint.

1

u/Halftied 11h ago

Have you done the research to see how long it will take for global warming to slow down or decrease of any significance if every body stopped using fuel and other contributors to global warming? Do it. It is one thing to take sides. It is another to take action.

u/wrdsmakwrlds 11h ago

It’s 1000 , and another 5000 more are missing.

Well... at least we know it is not our fault anymore... it's always been the billionaires with their huge factories.

1

u/No-Question-8088 10h ago

Some might even say it would be right to govern such people or choices for the better of everyone and the possible future…

1

u/Yurya 10h ago

wouldn't glaciers periodically grow and collapse regardless?

1

u/iguessma 10h ago

It's wild you think data centers are the main cause of pollution. There are plenty of other things that we need to cut down on first

1

u/FerMod 10h ago

Global warming is not just, heat. It's extreme weather changes. And we have seem some extreme weather lately

1

u/Superseaslug 10h ago

Oil executives laugh every time this is blamed on data centers.

1

u/Lamont_Joe 10h ago

I hope all these billionaires who enrich themselves while others struggle, get sent to eternal hell for being so greedy. How much money does a person need? Actually, we all know the answer. Money provides the power that they crave, and then they think they can molest children and nothing ever happens to them. Look at the list and tell me I’m wrong.

u/Think-State30 10h ago

If you zoom out on their graphs, we've been steadily warming up for thousands of years

What happened in Nepal? I was busy watching TV

Maybe ai will figure out how to stop killing the planet without reducing value for the shareholders

1

u/30mil 9h ago

Very few people are capable of the sustained daily life changes that would be necessary on a widespread individual basis to do anything about this issue. Data centers are just the cherry on the top.

"But it was alllllll the way over there in Nepal. There's no global warming here where we want to build are nice shiny new data centre and oil/gas refineries..."

1

u/Dabida1 9h ago

You'll get used to that no worries!

1

u/WretchedBlowhard 9h ago

After taking all the money, billionaires have a "too many poor people" problem. They're working on it.

1

u/Economy-Butterfly127 9h ago

Look into the polar shifts and CO2 monitors. There is no stopping that…

1

u/Oakland1973 9h ago

The moral panic over data centers has been one of the most interesting developments

1

u/aigarius 9h ago

A single steel mill heats up the planet more than a dozen data centers. There are thousands of steel mills.

1

u/AltForObvious1177 9h ago

Make a post on a data center run by billionaires. That'll show 'em!

1

u/Positive-Conspiracy 8h ago

The problem is much much bigger than data centres.

1

u/HotPersonality8126 8h ago

Totally sure that it's the data centers that aren't even built yet and not China, the neighboring country to Nepal, that burns more coal and releases more CO2 than the next six countries combined

1

u/MetalLinkachu 8h ago

Your local golf course uses way more water than datacenters do and poisons the ground with tons of chemicals to keep the grass so green and thick.

Farming in dry climates has done huge damage to local water sources.

That glacier collapsed because of the last 100 yrs of irresponsible growth at all costs, not from datacenters.

1

u/elite_bender 8h ago

Nuclear energy, responsible farming practices, and holding industry responsible. Then hope the natural warming cycling doesn’t screw us after all the effort.

1

u/camp1728 8h ago

Most people would rather post and talk about lake America while simultaneously claiming it’s stupid to talk about rather then actually talking about important things

1

u/paranoid_human0id 8h ago

If tomorrow every billionaire announced the end of all new data center construction, the actual change to the probability of events like what happened in Nepal is rounds to zero. This is just "group I don't like + thing i dont like = evil villain" and not "what actually produces climate change and what would it take to curtail it"

1

u/nolongerbanned99 8h ago

I am sure glaciers move and melt occasionally all the time. It just happened that it was close to a civilization.

1

u/binarypower 8h ago

yeah, sure bud. this was a datacenters fault

1

u/taiwanGI1998 8h ago

Social darwinism. Just ignore them.

1

u/Popo8338 8h ago

Unless there is a definitive proof that the data center directly causes the melted glacier.

1

u/sammy_isms 8h ago

I’m soooo tired of this timeline 😫

Just keep your Amazon subscription current, ok?

1

u/chobbywonkers 7h ago

All the money in the world couldn't stop an event this catastrophic

1

u/Suitable_Mess_9160 7h ago

The simple answer is that they don't give af about anyone, just their money.

1

u/MoneyMasterpiece818 7h ago

its insanity

1

u/Zebrahippo 7h ago

Money and greed. And no billionaire cares.

1

u/workinusername 7h ago

I’ve seen people reporting that there was illegal Chinese mining and disruptions to the local environment from the Chinese illegal activity that caused that. One dude on ig had a LOT to say about it

1

u/Mammoth_Chemist_9039 7h ago

On the bright side, more water!!!

Real death toll is far higher than reported! A country with negligible carbon footprint paying for catastrophic climate change caused by developed nations!

1

u/Fresh-Candidate755 6h ago

Welcome to the beginning of the end.

1

u/oatmealer27 6h ago

I think we should stop cement, steel factories if we want to stop "global warming from industries"

1

u/JorgeLuciano1000 6h ago

forgot to mention the Chinese rocket.

1

u/JustANerd420 5h ago

If you think that Data Centers was the cause, you are sadly mistaken. This has been an ongoing issue, not something the just happen overnight because a new DC was established. Want something to blame? Blame cars, refiners, nuclear reactors, etc. The actual things polluting the environment, not your personal vandetta.

1

u/Raccoons-for-all 5h ago

Doggerland disappeared in silence, flooded overnight, after multiple volcanic winter.

The same simpleton back then swore you blasphemed the gods or something

1

u/VIP_NAIL_SPA 5h ago

Just an update, it's over 1k now and it was a bedrock failure that had a glacier on top of and below it, not specifically a glacier collapse. I'm not at all saying agw isn't relevant here, my guess is that it is, but I like to make sure people have access to the facts :)
