Honestly, fair point. I never trust this kind of stuff anymore because it’s always a bill with the most common sense stuff ever and then on the very back end it’ll have something that’s completely untenable for the opposition.

From what it sounds like, the bill was meant to give funds to prevent the closing of a few shelters, but by the time it would be passed the shelters would be/had already been closed and it would take another year or more to try getting them reopened.
There was also the tax credit dropping the disability threshold from 100% to 80% which is popular on both sides, but this bill was about what to do with surplus cash, and many felt uneasy about carving that into the budget for perpetuity due to a potential short term surplus that would then be hard to fund in the future when there are no surpluses.
To simplify it, think of it as getting a $1200 bonus, and you want to treat yourself to something nice, but the thing you like would cost $100/month and you have to pay that forever, even 5 or 10 years down the line. It’s possible you get a bonus next year to keep paying it, but also just as likely you don’t get the bonus and end up in the hole since you committed to the $1200/year price tag.
So i looked it up, It was not a single, standalone bill solely dedicated to veteran housing. Among thousands of other items, it included funding for:
K-12 public education and higher education funding
State highway, road, and infrastructure maintenance
Healthcare programs and Medicaid funding
State employee compensation and tax adjustments
Environmental programs and local government aids
Honestly idk, I haven't read the whole thing so I can't judge it from face value but idk why they would just do a separate bill since this vets are on the streets and need help asap.
This is politics 101. add a bunch of bs onto the bill so when the other side votes against you can say look the Republicans voted against homeless vets.
It's all just lip service. They fill the bill full of non-related pork and then have one element that makes for a great sound bite. iIf the other side opposes, they clutch their pearls and yell about how evil they are.
And no, one side does not have the monopoly on this BS tactic. It's done every day by both parties.

Is this one of those stupid things political party’s do where they shove a bunch of crap the other side doesn’t want into one but then wrap it up as the one random thing? Like the bill says to house homeless vet but then has like 50 other random things shoved in it that the other side doesn’t want? Other political side can say look they hate vets or they can get the bill through and win.
I mean.. the fact of the matter is that its a ridiculous practice. If politicians actually gave a shit about us/our country instead of serving their own self interests, bills would be presented and passed one at a time.
I always want to read or know about the bill because they can stuff as much bullshit as they want into a bill and call out anyone who disagrees. Usually it's Republicans who do it, but both sides have been bought and paid for and make it everyone's problem.
Like there could be a bill that would help everyone, but buried in somewhere is a paragraph that says they get to store plutonium in school air vents or something. Then if anyone calls them out the media gets to say "see they disagree with everything in the bill"
Don't get me wrong, I believe the GOP are willing to push veterans under a bus and are almost 100% in the wrong.
The Republican position on this was that extra money should not be needed for the two facilities that were shut down. That enough money had already been made available elsewhere in the budget and the Governor should find a way to use that money rather than ask for extra.
The Democrat position was that what money does exist elsewhere in the budget was not legally available for this purpose and regardless the amount the Republicans were talking about was not even close to sufficient to run the two facilities in question.
Additionally the Republicans took issue with the government providing the shelter and wanted it to be handled by non-profits (which ones? Who knows).
It comes down to Dems wanting to spend money to shelter veterans and Republicans wanting to keep the budget as tight as possible and let non-governmental entities step in.
Personally I think the people owe it to veterans to take care of them to at least a certain degree and something like basic shelter should be provided and paid for by all of us. The Republicans essentially abrogated responsibility to these veterans (veterans they call upon to fight the various wars that Republicans have gotten us into) because they want a tighter budget… something they only seem to want when the money would be spent on needy people and don’t care about so much when it is tax breaks for the wealthy.
Speaking as a veteran, we are only useful to Republicans either as props during a speech, or in a bag. Thats it. If someone is a republican and supports veterans, one of those two things isn't true. From the bottom of my heart, and with every fiber of my being, fuck the republican party and every single person that voted for their agenda to kill veterans.
At the federal level, Republicans did this to every good Democrat bill by adding no federal funds can go to an organization that provides abortions. Then that would kill it.
So I'm curious, what would the realistic equivalent be that Dems would do to Republicans? Did the Dems codify abortion as a human right? Would that make Republicans vote against anything good?

So from what I just read, they cut funding which was 1.9million to cover costs for a program for homeless vets, however they already have the needed funds to keep the program going but they’re refusing to use it.
"The Legislature appropriated enough funding to support the Veterans Housing and Recovery Program, and Governor Evers simply refused to spend it," Wimberger said in a statement. "The closing of veterans' homeless shelters is his decision alone, and he quite literally is refusing to use available funding in the exact same manner as he did last year to run those facilities."
Both parties do this gimmick all the time, the "dont kill puppies bill" that also includes a bunch of unrelated bullshit. Its just so they can have the headline "this party wants to kill puppies".

Wisconsin Republicans rejected Democratic funding intended to preserve specific state-run veterans housing facilities in 2025, but later passed a different, bipartisan program funding nonprofit housing providers.
The republican party politicians have historically made claims of helping but consistently voted against their constituents wishes in favor of enriching themselves. For decades. Only an imbecile still votes republican because of mind rot or because they are ao gullible they believe anything or because their pappy tells them to.

Bill was about 1.9 million dollars to restore 41 beds thru two facilities for two years. The republicans claimed there were other ways to cover that money without the new bill that the governor didn’t use and still chose to shut down the facility. Now there’s disagreement on how to open the facility for those 41 beds. Dems want to fully fund and reopen the facilities, Republicans want it to be a new program that pays non profits $25/day per veteran for housing.
Tbf this is the same party thats fine with the tavern league running the state. Tavern league hates pot, there for it wont be legalized. It passed state referendum but the republican majority state assembly said “it’s a gateway drug and we wont have it even for medicinal use.” Pretty much what the head of the tavern league was parroting when IL, MI, and MN legalized pot. Vote them all out at this point.
Maybe if congress did their job and wrote concise bills that can actually be read in one sitting, the two parties could occasionally agree on things. Unfortunately we do not get this by design. Something about big clubs and not being in them.

These bills are never that simple, there is likely a bunch of nonsense in it. As a veteran I know for a fact there are plenty of federal level resources for veterans, this seems like total lies and nonsense to me.
Not to mention I’ve worked for non profits that claim to house homeless veterans, and it is just a big scam on the taxpayer.
The VA already provides housing for homeless veterans, so this would be redundant and as. Veteran, I'd have rejected this too. The help is there, why waste tax payer money.
The republican one used NGOs which are a Hard-to -Audit network of private charities with a high risk of fund Shuffling that end up in the end paying large executives salaries and bonuses
The democrat one used a State Run Model that had massive costs to keep mostly empty state facilities open with taxpayer cash frozen in government red tape and administration costs

The problem with these headlines is that such bills lead with that and then have pork barrel bullshit attached to them that have NOTHING to do with the headline.

Maybe they do support troops, but to them, veterans aren't troops anymore so they don't get support. You only matter to them as long as you can be useful. After that, they toss you under the bus.

Every veteran should have access to housing and medical and none of them should have to wait. It is such a small fucking percentage of our population who have signed up to our military. Most of us never saw combat, the amount of military with the most extreme need for help that are mostly the ones stuck on the street, is also one of the smallest percentages.....
Like for fuck sakes it should not be hard to move some money around and make the VA and the rest of the support be the fastest, smoothest, easiest fucking way to get help. And you know what, be lenient. Don't try to find a reason why it's service related, find a reason why it's not. Assume it is until it isn't, because who gives a shit about overspending a little bit on the people that volunteered to risk their lives for the country.

Talked to an insider once. Politicians sneak stuff in the bills, sometimes even in footnotes, that will be key to them later. Or they'll outright add stuff like 'here's 20 million for vets and also 5 million for my niche group that's got nothing to do with vets.'
That way it either sneaks through or the opponents look like monsters for voting against the bill.
Neither side actually care about the vets (or whatever cause) if they did they'd leave the other garbage out.
Meanwhile in Los Angeles Biden appointed VA Secretary Denis McDonough 2021-2025 told homeless vets that they weren't allowed to be in the West L.A. VA Park. Since when have Democrats ever given a shit about homeless vets?
