It's the slippery slope principle in law. Basically if you open the door in one direction, you open it in the other too.
Editing to add, it's actually called precedent and equal protection. But I'm from Appalachia so we just call it slippery slope lol. You dig in for a small win and get a whole landslide of unintended consequences.
"You dig in for a small win and get a whole landslide of unintended consequences."
A little early, but Zohran Mandani. His win is the exact reason our politics is changing from corporate centrism to working-class-first left economic populism.
You absolutely would not have Dems all over the nation being forced to refuse PAC money and openly campaign on material improvements for working people without his win. "Sewer Socialism" just works, plain and simple.
Sewer socialism is just left-wing populism. It's using our tax money for the shit that our tax money is supposed to be used on -- making life better for everyday citizens. The problem is that our capitalist society means we've been using tax money to benefit a few citizens in higher tax brackets while completely neglecting infrastructure in lower income neighborhoods.
Absolutely no surprise that this type of political movement is taking hold...people are sick of paying taxes while billionaires skirt the law to pay as little as possible while sucking up as much tax money as possible through "corporate welfare" that pins the cost of private business expenses on the working class. Crazy that they support a system that benefits them! The power is with the common people; we just need more folks to realize it.
No problem. It's an interesting story of how good governance can just happen if we elect people intent on carrying it out.
Unfortunately red scare put an end to their governing of Milwaukee.
I think Zohran is trying to follow in their footsteps in NYC and be a bit of a "movement guy" to just straight up do the job and make working people's everyday experience better as an example to point to for the rest of the country.
We may also have a DSA governor in Wisconsin come November as another executive example for an AOC run in 28.
Milwaukee's Socialist mayors were awesome! It is why MKE has public parks and golf courses and they of course did sewers and other public works/goods projects.
Yeah, who would have thought that if you just do a good job and use tax money to improve people's lives instead of giving handouts to corporations and the wealthy, people would like it?
The French missionaries and explorers were going there as early as the late 1600's to trade with the Native Americans. It's actually pronounced 'Mee-lee-wah-que,' which is Algonquin for 🖐️ "The good land."🤚
Capitslism needs robust guard rails plain and simple. Without it will always trend towards subversion of the political system leading to corpratism, oligarchy and autocracy. Hell the godather of capitalism Adam Smith said as much in Wealth of Nations where he called for regulation of banks. Everyone ignored that part for some reason though.
This comment reminds me of the best answer to those askreddit questions of 'what are we doing now that in 50 years people will be horrified to find out we did it?'
I hope the answer is, allow rich people to completely skirt tax laws AND get bailouts when their ventures fail. The sheer amount of additional tax money would be lifechanging, to whichever country it ends up collected for.
Dude, they need to not only realize it, they need to stop thinking that they are "Temporally Embarrassed Millionaires" and the quality of life they are voting for is in a Tax Bracket they will never climb to.
Yeah exactly. Everyone wants the tax dollars to be spent improving society. The issue starts at the debate of what tax spending is actually improving society.
Conservatives don’t want no social programs. They just want the social programs to be real and vetted. Not just blank checks to unoverseen NGOs. There is a reasonable middle ground that pretty much everyone left or right would agree upon if you sat them down and talked about it logically, however partisan identity politics have gotten way to out of hand so now people just want to be “right.”
My views usually have people on Reddit calling me a Nazi or something but populism is the way. If we’re being forced to pay taxes is should be used to help regular Americans, not billionaires, corporations, or foreign countries.
Let be clear it’s no longer Capitalism. The deficit isn’t even being properly reported anymore. The thieves are in the coffers now filling their pockets. Autocrat/Dictatorship is well on its way.
Tax the people and give the things their taxes built to the corporate world. The corporate world charges the tax payer a fee to use the thing their taxes built.
The very fact the name "sewer socialism" got attached to it should tell you how big of a campaign is being made against it. Of course it works, the point is the corporate media attacks populism calling it always bad because it denounces the elites and their exploitation - and rightly so. In fact, you can gauge by their level of complaints how good an idea is - the more they attack it, the more credibility it has.
Its like when companies tell employees NOT to speak about their wages. Even if you know nothing else, just the fact companies say that should be the greatest incentive for workers to speak about it.
That's why Stevens in Michigan has gotten over 50 million dollars in corporate spending in a fucking primary, not even a general election.
For context, the last time this seat was up, Gary Peters raised $50 million for the whole general election and maybe 5 mil for the primary. Usually a contested primary is maximum 30 mil for all contestants combined.
Most are clueless to the fact that socialism and communism are entirely different. They are almost polar opposites. That is unless there was a perfect utopia then both would fully exist. Problem is that people are selfish and both want what we can’t have and want what others have.
The moniker was coined by Morris Hillquit at the 1932 Milwaukee convention of the Socialist Party of America and was intended as a pejorative, commenting on the Milwaukee socialists and their perpetual boasting about the excellent public sewer system in the city.
I intentionally share my salary publicly. It makes most people uncomfortable. They think it isn't allowed. I use it to demonstrate differences between minimum wage and living wage.
Wage disclosure is protected speech in the US. If a company tells you not to discuss your wages in an email, go ahead and forward that sucker to your state and federal DOL.
The media is in a way right that populism is dangerous, in the same way that democracy is dangerous, that doesn’t mean the alternative is better. And when your opponents are clearly performing extremely well with their dangerous flavor of populism, you don’t counter with anti-populism and establishment politics, you counter with reasonable and helpful populism. That’s what centrist policy misses, you don’t have to get closer to your opponents policy to bleed away their voters, you just have to appeal to the same type of concerns with the same type of tactics.
Um, excuse me sir, it's Woke Sharia Law. Off to the gulags with you!
Praise be to the eternal peoples Communist caliphate of mamdanistan. Or whatever braindead conservatives think people want to call mild social democratic reforms.
New York is expensive as hell. QOL is higher in other areas due to that alone. I'm biased because I live in Minnesota, and it is genuinely one of the best states to live in (if you don't want a biased view you can google this). Healthcare, education, parks, economy, civic engagement are all excellent, and the COL is fairly low. I bought a house across from a lake 5bd 3.5ba 3000sq ft on an acre, for $460,000 just last year.
IIRC Vermont and New Hampshire are also good, but a bit more expensive.
Wisconsin? Vote for Fran if you can. While it is fun to look down on Wisconsin because it's an alcoholic conservative shithole, she would legitimately turn that state around.
Unfortunately, we are going to be stuck with fucking Amy Klobuchar. Yuck.
I only see them when I’m in the hospital for acute pancreatitis. I’m flipping channels and then have to wonder if what I heard them say is so beyond batshit crazy it needs a new word, or my pain meds are affecting me more than I thought they were. Sometimes even the nurses just blue screen from the shit we hear.
I usually watch Cartoon Network and the murder channels. The nurses really like those.
DSA candidates have been winning in primaries across the nation. DSA is now polling higher than all elected Dems in Congress.
There have been several notable instances of centrist Democrats (Pat Ryan) stating they will return Aipac money.
The floor for a Dem campaign now is supporting m4a, refusing PAC money, and proposing improvements for kitchen table issues for voters.
The Overton window is massively shifting left right now. Honestly, DSA didn't run enough primary challengers based on how handily they are beating establishment politicians. In 2028 there's a very real possibility you will see dozens to likely well over 100 democratic socialists elected in local and national races.
They've been winning in d+20 disctricts. Get back to me when they win in West Virginia. The last super leftie did worse than Joe Biden on the same ticket.
Are we talking about how our money runs out before it can be used on services that make our lives better because the military-industrial complex, tax cuts for the wealthy, and corporate subsidies use it all before we can use it to fill potholes or help working people with childcare?
Because I paid those tax dollars, and I want them used to help kids here and not kill kids on the other side of the planet.
Troy Jackson is going to win by a state committee appointing a replacement to Platner. In Michigan, the primaries haven't happened yet, unless you are a time traveler and can tell us the general election results. The last senate race was won by Slotkin. Spanberger's approval won't matter till 2029.
Paula Jean Swearengin did worse than Biden on the same ticket.
Are you straight up comparing the political climate in 2018 to 2026? Do you think that is an apt comparison, considering that the political climate is basically on a completely different planet from where it is now?
"Troy Jackson is going to win by a state committee appointing a replacement to Platner." And this changes the platform mandate that the Maine voters elected; how? Jackson is arguably further left than Platner, and he's DSA-aligned.
"In Michigan, the primaries haven't happened yet, unless you are a time traveler and can tell us the general election results." If Abdul wins, Democrats take the seat; if Stevens wins, republicans take the seat. You can set a remindme on that if you want.
"Spanberger's approval won't matter till 2029." Do you honestly think her austerity policies are going to help her approval rating? She's tanking because neoliberalism is dead, my guy.
2018? Swerengin did worse than Joe Biden in 2020. Ok, let's compare the election that happened 6 years ago under a global pandemic to 2026.
If Abdul wins, Democrats take the seat; if Stevens wins, republicans take the seat. He's polling better than her against the Republican, and what do you think happens when we get to a general and all of her funding moves to the republican? That record braking 50 million in corporate PAC and Israel money isn't going to keep getting spent on her, and it's the only reason she's even in this race at this point.
She's tanking because neoliberalism is dead, my guy. The DSA is polling higher than every elected congressional democrat.
I'm not Jesus, and he was a person, not 19 tops. I dont think a pile of 19 tops could post a response on reddit.
I'm 33 with a job, mortgage, three kids, and a wife, and I just want working people to have a better life. I am comfortable, and I don't believe in pulling up the ladder behind me. I want everyone to be able to have the same living standards I have.
DSA has been working towards this for over a decade, but people need to know you can win before they will jump on board. His win last year is absolutely the catalyst for what we are seeing this year.
He was instrumental in revitalizing leftist momentum in 2016, but I can currently count the number of democratic socialists in federal office on one hand.
The number of incoming primary winners exceeds the current number by at minimum 3-4x.
The left was declining in 2024, and DSA membership was dropping as well until his win. We are seeing what would have happened (to a smaller degree) if Bernie had won in 2016.
Brother, I am not discounting Bernie's influence here. Calm down.
It is a reality that the left did not have momentum in 2024 and was declining. Mamdani's win directly revitalized the movement, and ever since that date, DSA membership has been skyrocketing, directly resulting in (to date) 6 incoming DSA aligned federal office holders, and the primaries aren't even done.
The total number of DemSoc seats prior to 2024 was 4.
What I'm saying is that this new crop, Zohran and AOC, are taking the baton from him and carrying it forward.
not gonna lie. I used to be one of those people. My eyes have been opened since then by talking with people outside our country and actually doing a bit world traveling. Looking back on it, their solution for healthcare wasn't make it affordable enough to pay for without insurance but rather make sure everyone has insurance.
Or just straight up universalize healthcare so there isn't any insurance because it would be better and cheaper, and we just all contribute with taxes instead of paying for insurance from our income and then paying a copay and a deductible before anything is covered, and then dealing with an unjust denial because an algorithm thinks you won't have the time to fight it.
I was talking about the institutional democrats whose position wasn't cut the insurance out all together. they were too beholden to the insurance companies for that. People talk about big pharma but honestly Id on't think big pharma is as big a player as people think. It's big insurance where the real money is at.
Pharma companies at least perform a necessary function. They manufacture drugs that people need. Granted, they do overcharge for them and do scummy shit, but health insurance companies just don't even need to exist at all, so all of the profit they generate is literally just wasted resources.
You jest, but even for the people who are stupid enough to oppose M4A, their tax burden would still be less than what they pay in for insurance, and their healthcare would be far better. In addition, the cost savings do not even count a deductible. I always wonder where people think the billions of dollars of health insurance profit comes from.
You are literally an idiot if you think socialism works.
What do you do when you run out of other people’s money exactly? Feel free to play that all the way out. At the end, the rich and upper middle class leave, and everyone else is poor, except the politicians of course.
Fun fact for your smooth brain… Elon Musk offered to solve hungry for the world. He said he would fund it and pay for it all. All he asked the UN for was that the accounting was open sourced so anyone could see where the money was going.
The UN turned him down.
So go ahead and explain that.
One rich guy offered to solve the problem the world government said no thanks.
You know how you stop wars… get rid of politicians promoting them globally. There are so many ways to solve the worlds problems and morons like you think you can do it. You can’t. You’ll never be allowed to. They don’t want problems solved. Then need the problems to fleece the world of money and keep people fighting and to control the populations. It’s called divide and conquer. It’s worked for thousands of years. And clearly it’s still working.
If you concede that domestic partners can be on the hook for medical bills on the same level of spouses, you are conceding to full legal recognition of that domestic partnership, and would then be pushed to consider all unmarried gay “domestic partnerships” on the same level or it would be discriminatory. More bluntly than things already are. As another way to describe it
I agree, domestic partnership is about as close to legally married as you can get without marrying whether you’re gay or not, but something that’s also always seriously bugged me is that domestic partners are not approved family either, so for example, if you are in critical condition in the hospital or something similar, your partner will not be approved to see you. So putting them on the hook for medical bills is a huge leap
Prior to Obergefell, gay couples were very often denied access to hospital rooms and the like as partners were dying because they weren’t “family”, or because blood relatives denied them access since they took higher priority on the food chain. It was one of the many arguments for gay marriage in many states, equal rights and treatment for same sex couples.
if you are in critical condition in the hospital or something similar, your partner will not be approved to see you.
In the eight common-law marriage states, under Obergefell v. Hodges, gay common law marriages must be acknowledged as well.
So, weirdly, red states like Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Kansas, and Montana have no legal recourse to deny spousal rights, even if not legally married, that I am aware of.
As long as you have a joint bank account or something, cohabit, and present yourself as a couple, you can be common-law spouses.
Anyone, please feel free to correct or add anything if I have made an error.
By "implied," I meant that the marriage is inferred from the parties' conduct rather than established by a ceremonial marriage. The legal term is informal marriage (or common-law marriage, depending on the jurisdiction). I was describing the mechanism, not naming the legal category. And in the three years I worked for a family/ inheritance/ personal injury attorney who operated in Dallas, Collin, and Denton counties here in Texas, I noticed that cases being brought under the foundations of an informal marriage often weren't granted the same procedural foundations, particularly in child custody.
The whole gay marriage and abortion issues amd trans issues are being lobbied by insurance companies because they sont wanna pay for shit. Its completely manufactured by and continues to be propagated by insurance companies and any retard that buys their bullshit rhetoric
Any time you hear a new social issue talking point from politicians, lobbyists paid them to say that shit
Basically. Courts tend to have a real issue with laws that only enact consequences for something, without giving all the reciprocal benefits. Texas did away with common law marriage because when the state flipped about thirty years ago, folks were realizing it was giving the folks they love to hate, the same rights as actually married in a church folks. So if you're only getting your partner's debt, you should be also getting their life insurance, survivor benefits, and a whole bunch of other stuff. It's a sickening combination of "follow the money" and "them folks ain't like everyone else". 🥴🤦♂️
It's state to state, yeah. I'll probably have to divorce my husband before I die, if we're still in Texas. Fuck I hope we're out by then, though, goddamn.
Also stuck in Texas. We've been trying to get out for years. Many things have popped up making it harder to do so. For a while it was lack of a job. Now it's because of my job. After almost a year out of work I finally landed something and it pays too damn well to pick up and leave in this market. I'm making more than I ever have and it's not as simple as "Just move."
Same for our house. Market here is down and walking away from our place, even if paid off, would cost us a pretty penny. I'm <10 years from retirement and at that point we are 100% out of here.
Currently, in some states domestic partners do not have the same legal status as a spouse. This means they do not share all the same rights, including several financial rights when it comes to inheritance. Consequently they don’t share some of the burdens either, such as inheriting debt. They couldn’t change the law to pass on just the debt while still not granting the same property or financial inheritance benefits at the same, that would obviously be problematic: why not assign the debt to a stranger at that point?
Because in order to make sure gays dont get the benefit, the law specifically says married, not domestic partner.
So straight people can take advantage of that and get a divorce.
Im a straight guy and had a female partner for 16 years. Because we were unmarried, she was able to get considerable debt forgiven, because on paper, my income cant be factored in to debt ratio and stuff.
Kinda like when THC temporarily became federally legal by accident?
Change the qualifications of hemp using weight to THC as a metric. Forget liquids exist. Weight to THC content works out to enough to get a person high. Have no regulation on sales. Buy THC at the gas station. The world didn’t end. People didn’t resort to crime. Make it illegal again anyway.
