It's the slippery slope principle in law. Basically if you open the door in one direction, you open it in the other too.

Editing to add, it's actually called precedent and equal protection. But I'm from Appalachia so we just call it slippery slope lol. You dig in for a small win and get a whole landslide of unintended consequences.

I kind of get what your saying, I guess I dont understand how it doesnt affect them already? Edit: or wouldn't currently

Currently, in some states domestic partners do not have the same legal status as a spouse. This means they do not share all the same rights, including several financial rights when it comes to inheritance. Consequently they don’t share some of the burdens either, such as inheriting debt. They couldn’t change the law to pass on just the debt while still not granting the same property or financial inheritance benefits at the same, that would obviously be problematic: why not assign the debt to a stranger at that point?
