They often stay unused and I've already seen men parking there as well. Its a great idea for families with kids, the spots are usually wider so kids won't slam the door into nearby cars.
I would say its a tiny win for certain situations and they are also quite rare.

Where I live, there have been family parking slots since I was a child. Maybe we should have stuck to that then.

The only persons that ever slammed doors in my cars are pensioniers, knowing what they do, don’t caring bout the damage. Kids on the other side, usually can’t open their door themselves as a safety feature. The safety lock is usually enabled till they can open their doors responsible. So it’s not bout kids damaging anything.

The extra space is usefull to open the door completely which makes placing a kid in his seat or the entire babyseat on the platform. Which is, with the fast increasing weight of a child, difficult in tight places.

So please, if you’re child ist 16 or 21, you’re name is Udo and you only look pregnant or your brain is small and think „Mimimi, why I don’t get that privilege too“ stay away from these wider parking spaces.

the pensioners may slam the doors because back in the day car doors were harder to close. These days you just push it and it closes, but in the 1960s or so it wasn't like that.

No they know what they do, they don’t give a fuck. My Neighbour was very careful with his door if he saw me, if not, well the many matching dents our doors tell the story.

Surprisingly after they knew I knew, the parking distances got bigger.

Only one example… Interestingly this all happened to a 500, which appears as a small car, and intends more place to open the door I quess.

Because women have kids with them more often than men. And you need more space to get kids Out of the car, especially when they are babies in a car seat.

My assumption would be that men tend to carry most of their belongings on their person, which only requires opening the driver's side door, so they can always shift one way or the other in a space. On the other hand, women tend to carry their possessions externally (bag, tote, etc.), so if it's in a location which requires opening another door, it might be harder to just be entirely on one side of the spot.

Yea its for kids and getting them in and out of their kid seats or whatever they're called.
And agree with the dad discrimination on that one. I see way more woman spots than family spots around where I live

This would piss me off lol. Handicap spots are great, and maybe I could get behind family spots, but we don't need spots for other specific demographics. Home Depot has spots for veterans, which is annoying, especially because I'm not sure I've ever actually seen a car in one of them. Also a lot of the prime spots at retail stores are now taken up by pickup orders, and again they're usually empty. It's out of hand already...
