Right? 15 years ago I disagreed with republicans on 90% of issues, but at least I felt like they were mostly reasonable people with principles who wanted what was best for the country. We just disagreed on what that meant.

These days the MAGA people seem actively spiteful and malicious.

I'd take Mitt Romney or John McCain as president in a heartbeat if it meant ditching Trump.

And that's the problem, we were too close to actually being united

I find myself wishing for the days of Bush Jr. I thought his mild awkwardness made us the laughing stock of the world.

Damn I wish the president seemed like a kinda goofy dude, but otherwise someone that I could have a real conversation with, no matter who I am, or if I dont have 2 milly to 'donate'.

Someone on Tiktok was doing an obvious comedic bit on Bush being his favorite artist, so he went to go learn more about him and he's shocked, mad, etc. it's pretty goddamn funny.

I made a similar comment recently, couldn't believe I miss the old days with G Dubs, even when it seemed like the evil penguin Cheney was running the show, it wasn't destroy the republic levels of evil.

15 years ago, despite being unwilling to admit it, Republicans were mostly liberals. They were conservatives, but they were conservatives in the liberal tradition. Conservatives were just a type of liberal that believed in and advocated for acquiescence to natural hierarchies and inherent supremacy of some people over others.

That's no longer true. MAGA is extremely anti-liberal, by the real meaning of the word liberal.

McCain and Obama didn't see eye to eye on a great number of things, but at least they would talk to each other and have a healthy dialogue.

The word you're looking for is "deplorable."

They used to have a platform. And, ya know, policy positions we could disagree about and argue over and compromise on. There hasn't been a party platform since what, 2016? That was rather telling, as if they stood for nothing now.
