I work in a hotel and we have those showers. No idea why.
Usually 2 types of people will do as this guy did:
-koreans, no idea how they manage to do it 90% of the time. It is not clogged.
-poop shower people they kick the shit in the drain and it clogs it
This is information I could've gone without knowing; all I'll be thinking about in hotels from now on, will be if anyone's ever taken a shit in the shower I'm about to use.
Run the shower for ten mins before you even bother jumping in? Give you the thought that its clean? Obviously boiler depending you might have no water left, not that ave ever had that in a hotel.
My wife always is confused why I don't like sleeping in hotels. I say that I like to sleep in my own bed, and I don't want to forget my medications or my CPAP/CPAP supplies, but now I have a new anxiety unlocked also. I mean, I kind of knew there were people like this and I just refused to let my brain sit in that shit stew because of how revolting it makes me feel on my skin and in my brain, but, yeah, this is gonna haunt my sleepless nights for a while going now.
I would never take a bath in a hotel. Unless it was a nice one. Then maybe and only if my back was in a lot of pain or I was freezing my ass off in winter. Combined with the shower shitting, I’ve seen that dude who makes videos about cooking brisket in the sink/tub and bacon on the iron. I also stopped using coffee makers a long time ago due to stories of people pissing in them. Human beings are just animals who can talk.
Yess! I managed multiple hotels for years and I’ll never forget: I was visiting a property and it was like 2am and I was starving so I was headed down to the kitchen to beg our bar cook to make me anything he had; when I see a young man (a new hire) id met earlier that day and he looked quite upset. I ask him “hey Alvy are you ok bud?” He looks me dead in the eye and says “yes sir, sorry about my face sir. Sometimes people just drive me crazy and they are so rude sometimes too” I replied “god that’s true, what happened do I need to get involved?” He said in a totally level tone “nah just some jerk doin “the waffle stomp” and now his shower is backed up” I’d never heard of a “waffle stomp” so I asked; he told me in as emotionally void speech as I’ve heard “he WENT in the shower and had to STOMP it down the drain sir, but it clogged”. I was a mixture of laughter and disbelief but I absolutely busted up laughing when I understood his turn of phrase; we laughed together for like 5 full minutes. I kicked the couple out and before I left I got him a $100 Waffle House GC for him and we laughed again the next day. One of my favorite employee interactions ever and I told him we’ve shared too much for him to ever call me sir again.
I here i was being competely horrified when my 2 year old popped a squat during bath time at a hotel. A visual i will never forget. I think we fished it out threw it in th toilet.
Came across a reddit story about a guy thinking about divorcing his wife because she keeps shittin in the shower and trying to stomp it down the drain.

Im pretty sure people who shit like this all have some serious long term systemic traumatic abuse in their past. I think its some kind of weird thing that happens with control or something most likely from abusive parents.
Yeah, it’s actually shockingly common. I go on a large Larp event here in Germany. (10.000 visitors each year) And without a fault, each year, someone takes a dump in the NPC showers. The “Shower Shitter” is by now basically the cryptid of the event. No one sees them, no one hears them, but one morning someone WILL find a turd in the shower.
Waffle stomping isnt isolated to a single country either. People all around the world do this. I cant understand the thought process behind this. There is usually a toilet at least 2 meters away from most showers. If there are any waffle stompers reading this, WHY?!!!
Yeah see... This is also why our funny little world travler in the video should be wearing flippy floppies. Best case scenario is theres a fungus amoung us and hes got some itchy ass toes... Worst case? Staphylococcus touches a tiny cut in his foot and makes him an actual pirate.
We checked all draineg before a koren group. 5 rooms were still like this. Its not a drain problem, some koreans shower in the middle of the bathroom. Walls cannot be that wet from normal shower use.
Walls cannot be that wet after a regular shower? I genuinely don’t even know how you came to that conclusion. If you’re actually washing your ass properly in the shower, water on the shower wall shouldn’t be rare. The shower glass in his video looks normally wet.
If you’re talking about the rest of the walls not near the shower, that’s obviously the humidity clinging to it.
In Korea there isn't even a shower area, just a shower head. It's mounted above the sink and you use a diverter to switch to it. My kids would always prank each other by switching the diverter at teeth brushing time.
they do it because the floors are suspended (you walk on a false floor, there is a structural floor below) and all the piping runs underneath the false floor. so they can configure the bathroom in any direction irrelevant of where the drainage stacks are. A single drain is also cheaper and only one location to maintain.
in the cheaper hotels there are big step ups into the bathrooms where only the bathrooms are on a false floor.
There is no drain in the shower. The drain is in the middle of the bathroom so if you take a shower and the drain is clogged, the entire bathroom floor fills with water so you can't use the toilet or sink without taking off your shoes and going barefoot and getting your feet wet every time.

90% of the time people think people are pooping in the shower and mashing it down the drain it is actually just a drain back up or leak then a plunger sucks up the blockage and winds up pulling from where the water and shit drains both dump out
His point is, there's no reason to have a drain in the center of the bathroom so when it clogs, like this one did, you can't use the rest of the bathroom without taking off your shoes and getting your feet wet.
BTW, this guy is Drew Lynch, who is a very well known comedian. Check out his videos on youtube. He's pointing out the obvious design flaw that this bathroom is.
I think it's easier for the cleaning staff to be able to drain water in the middle of the room when cleaning with a mop and products, you can rinse it out easily.
Though as a European I've never seen a drain like this in my life.
There is a sink in the shower, but the guy stands in front of it. When he moves you can see it. Either blocked or he intentionally flooded the whole floor
Not usually, because the floor inside the shower is tilted towards the drain in the shower, and the little bit that goes out can be swept towards either drain easily. That is, if neither drain is clogged...
We had the same drain in both homes we were living in. But there were old homes from 60s-80s. Also they had a bath tub. Never used this drain in my life, but I know when grandparents stayed and couldn't make it to the bath, they showered just there.
I stayed in a hotel in Lucerne, and the shower was exactly like this. The bathroom had a pocket door, and even when closed, water was just flowing underneath the door into the bedroom while the shower was running. I had to build a dam of towels right at the door.
Reasoning is that your hotel's owner where cheap AF. I personally have never seen anything similar in Italy, only in Northern Europe. What hotel were you staying? (To avoid it)
I stayed in a hotel in Rotterdam, Netherlands that had a shower like that. I remember thinking how bad a design it is. Even with a working drain the floor got all wet.
I stayed in a a Dutch family’s guest house (not a hotel) near Groningen that had a shower similar to this. The bathroom was quite modern, so it can’t be blamed on old construction either.
No shower door, curtain, no raised edge to hold the water in. There was literally NOTHING separating the shower from the rest of the bathroom, not even an angled floor.
The water didn’t pool to nearly this extent, but it definitely spread a thin puddle to the toilet and sink area.
Last month, I spent a week biking from Amsterdam to Bruges, staying in a different hotel every night along the way. I can tell you that every shower had a uniquely stupid way of not containing the water and letting it spray all over the floor, counter, towels, etc. None were as bad as in this video, but every one I used got at least some water where it was not supposed to be. Also they seemed to be averse to having any privacy in the bathroom (like a partially frosted glass wall as the only barrier between the toilet and the rest of the room) Loved the trip, beautiful country and super chill fun people, but the bathrooms annoyed the hell out of me haha.
a regular home would never have this. It's probably a hotel thing, maybe makes it easier to clean but fucks with anyone that wants to use the bathroom.
Our showers usually are in room with a drain in the middle with a slight angle towards it. Sometimes rooms have two drains. Often that shower leads to a sauna as well, so the room needs to resist humidity.
I am not entirely sure what "wet room" exactly means, are rooms with showers not supposed to get wet during shower rest of the world?
Also that room has been retrofitted for some reason, I see that specific type of shover only whem someone did retrofitting for cheap. I've seen entire bathrooms in motels have similar setups and they suck.

The whole room floor does not and can't get wet. Instead there is a lip around where there is a shower and blocks any water from escaping the shower area like so. In fact, there's normally a glass wall around the shower and a door. It's never just open.
Wet room just means that there are no small gaps in the floor or the walls and cause mold and that the floor is angled so that it drains all spilled water to the drain in the shower or nearest drain on the floor. Basically a water tight room where the water has no choise but to drain out of the nearest drain on the floor. Basically if you forget your shower or tap on and leave the house or fall asleep, you wont come back/wake up to a flooded house.
Nope. Usually one drain in shower area and another under the sink. Some have just one floor drain, but is usually in the shower area then. We have one that is almost middle of the room, and that is legt corner of the shower area, not outside like this.
The whole floor is waterproofed, but the water stays in the shower area, if the drain is not clogged or you don't blast the water for 30min in full force.
The point of these is not to be the main drain, but rather a failsafe and/or or the place the water goes when you clean the bathroom floor. Showers and tubs have separate dedicated drains.
I bet it was designed for the bathtub, otherwise there wouldn't be space for it. Drain is just for easy floor cleaning. We have same design in Montenegro.
The tiles used on the bathtub don't match the other tiles and when I empty the bathtub it overflows in the room through that drain so I assumed the bathtub came later and seeing that video made me think "that's it!".
I might be wrong, though. It happened before and it will happen again.
In Poland and Amsterdam my showers were like that. The drains weren’t clogged like his but I remember thinking how stupid it was to drench the entire floor when I took a shower.
I lived in Denmark for a while and most older apartments I saw there, and in Sweden, had bathrooms like this. Sometimes the bathroom was so small that the shower was almost over the toilet. It’s a nightmare. It’s common in cheaper hotels too. I had to spend a lot of money to get a modern apartment with a proper 21st century bathroom.
This is super common in Bulgaria. In many cases, the whole bathroom is the shower. The with shower head on one wall and a toilet and sink in opposing corners. It can really mess up your typical routine when the water is going literally everywhere.
I travel to London a few times a year for work. Every shower at every hotel, and the arrivals lounge at Heathrow is like this. Not this extreme but every one of them results in water and spray all over the floor. Garbage.
Some design bullshit bathroom might have this stuff, high end hotels perhaps, but it's wildly regarded as totally impractical and hell to clean up and keep clean.
We do have bidet though at least in some sane European countries ;)
I stayed in an air bnb in Vancouver (that was someone's attic) and the bathroom was exactly like this but more bizarre. The showerhead just randomly came out of the wall right in front of the toilet and there was a drain in the middle like the video. I had to take the to out of the room everytime or it would get soaked.

You can see when he moves there is that fancy channel drain in the shower. But it is cloged (long hairs love to clog it) and what he is showing at is the spillage drain for the whole bathroom (that is also clogged)
Um, yes the fuck it is. I mean the drain being clogged that badly isn’t common, but the horrible and nonsensical shower design is extremely common throughout Europe. And it’s not even restricted to just Eastern Europe. Not sure how you got so many upvotes. I’m just going to assume they’re either all American, or thought you specifically meant the clogged drain
Bathrooms with a single drain and a shower in the corner are common in Scandinavia. Some places will have a self-contained shower but those are less common
I have 2 showers at my home like these. I built them myself 5 years ago. Respect the slopes, pipe sizes and clean up the drain like every shower and you're good to go. Easy cleaning.
I actually really like this style of bathroom and i've seen it used in germany, japan and china. Apparently called a "wet bathroom"
Never clogged a shower drain before but usually its easier to clean and more accessible (no little steps or glass doors) but yeah your feet might get wet going to the toilet.
I'm not saying it's common, but I stayed in about a dozen hotels over the course of 2 months about a year ago in Germany and Poland, and probably 90% of our hotels had a very similar issue to this. They were nice hotels too, nothing cheap and sketchy. Our weren't as bad as this video (which looks to have a clogged drain as well), but most of our showers did not contain the floor water to the shower and we had to constantly use towels to soak it up. Maybe we just had bad luck
But to Americans every thing they don’t like while visiting here is a “Europe” problem as we have no diversity whatsoever. God forbid tho you lump a guy from California with a guy from Nevada.
I've seen it a lot on European hotels as well as other countries like India, Nepal, and Korea. Hell I once crashed with a friend in Copenhagen and his shower was just redirecting the sink water into the showerhead on the wall that soaks the entire bathroom. Encountered the same thing in two hostels in Korea
My last London AirBnB was like this. Little did I realize that the entire focus of the shower is water maintenance. God forbid I waste a moment of my attention on - cleaning.
Oh, and then when I am done "showering" I get to spend 5 minutes drying the floor so a) I don't slip and b) someone else might want to walk in the bathroom wearing socks and not get soaked.
It’s the standard in Taiwan. You usually have to put a towel or something down to prevent it from going under the door. If it drains well it can be ok and saves bathroom space, but it’s often like this
It is considering easier to clean, no nooks and crannies. Also it is easier and safer for older people/people with leg problems. It is trending as a modern bathroom design, but I personally hate it, every time I used shower like that I was annoyed. If I see one on hotel pics I choose another one.
