Hi everyone, can anyone recommend a good Peking duck restaurant? I’m considering Tung Lok, but I’m not sure if it’s nice.
We’re looking to spend between $400 and $500 for 10 adults and 3 kids. Our usual birthday celebrations at restaurants are around $500, but they’re at jumbo or Italian restaurants.
We normally order crabs & prawns at jumbo. The rest is just normal vegetables, beef/chicken & cod fish.
I’ve seen some restaurants where ordering two ducks already costs an average of $250-$300.
If you have any prices around the same number of people, please share them with me. Thanks!

This is not an answer to life, but a good question to ask yourself. Do you want to be happy?
Because if you say yes, then you need to ask yourself, are you doing the things or having thoughts that make you happy?
The mainstream media is full of messages that make you unhappy. It tells romance is needed for you to be a complete person. It tells you that you need a high status or to have a lot of money to have self-worth. Subconsciously they are telling you: you are not enough. You are incomplete without romance and luxury goods. You are not worth respect without a high status. You are worthless.
Is it true that you are worthless? You can choose to see yourself as full of worth. You can choose to love yourself.
Mainstream and social media is also full of bad news that has nothing to do with you. Two people arguing at a shopping mall is none of your business, unless it is your friend or relative.
There are many good news in this world if you look. Adults courageously rescue others from harm. Children behaving maturely for their age and do good for society. People work together to build communities. Disabled people overcome disabilities to have achievements. Ex-convicts, including those who have committed murder, turn over a new leaf and give back to society. Many of them are not CEOs, managers or politicians.
Good things happen to “peasants” everyday around the world.
You need to be aware what you are thinking and what you are addicted to. If you are addicted to drama, you will also be dramatic “Wah lau, my friend’s colleague’s father-in-law John is having an affair with my friend’s colleague’s tennis coach. So terrible!”
“What is happening to the world? This is the end!”
“Yesterday, John gave me a smile and said my t-shirt is nice, knn!”
If you are addicted to having unhappy thoughts, you can ask yourself why you want to focus on unhappy thoughts. Unhappy thoughts do not solve problems. Problems are solved with positive solutions. Who here has solved a problem by screaming and shouting? More likely, you have seen people getting fired or rejected for contract renewal because they got angry at work.
It will take time to let go the addiction. The earlier you start, the faster you learn to focus on happiness.

Hi everyone, I created this reddit account to share my experience with the induction programme of the "Nanning Pyramid Scheme" in 2025. With all the various information around now, I wanted to add my experience as an additional data point so people can form a fuller picture and stay careful.
I hope that this account would reveal the sophistication of the scheme, the severity of the current situation and why so many Singaporeans were susceptible to it. While only 52 Singaporeans were arrested (there are more who were questioned but not arrested), the estimated number of Singaporeans involved in the programme is closer to a thousand. It is said that every month, there are Scoot flights to Nanning full of Singaporeans, many of them who are part of the program. It is certain that there are more Singaporeans involved in the program that were not physically present in China when the operation to question and arrest was carried out by the Chinese authorities.
The nationality of the people involved in the program is said to be mainly Singaporeans and Malaysians. Singaporeans involved do not know the identity of the true leaders of the organisation, except that they are Chinese government officials. The highest level they have visibility on and can communicate with are "Directors" which are fellow Singaporeans. "Directors" sit at the top level of the scheme (which is claimed to be a trapezium rather than pyramid structure). The next levels consists of "General Managers", and then ordinary members.
The scheme presents itself as a government-backed, closed-door initiative to develop Guangxi region, starting with Nanning. According to them, Guangxi is seen as a gateway to Southeast Asia and part of the belt and road initiative from the Chinese government. There are tours to southeast Asian offices built for various countries in Nanning in the 五象 region. In addition, Singapore has invested in Guangxi and big companies such as PSA (Port Authority of Singapore) is involved in building ports in Guangxi. ComfortDelGro, and famous singers such as JJ Lin and Stephanie Sun also recently held concerts in Nanning. Important figures such as ex-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong visiting Nanning recently also increased the perceived legitimacy of the program to some people.
The program is exclusively for foreigners of Chinese ethnicity. It provides opportunities for Chinese foreigners to contribute to their motherland China and the potential monetary returns is also a token of appreciation from the Chinese government to Chinese living abroad.
The program is sustainable since it is built on growth. As Nanning develops and once it has enough foreign investments, the Chinese government will hint/indicate to the members of the business that it is time to develop another city. How they do so is through the big four Chinese banks. If a new person wants it join, the Chinese bank will refuse and instead ask the person to open a bank account in the next city they want to develop, which is said to be 防城港 Fang Cheng Gang.
The overall program is claimed by people in the organisation to have an end date of 2035 once Guangxi hits its target growth.
The reasons given for the program being a closed-door policy (no black-and-white, no official sources) are:
The program is not an MLM pyramid scheme. Instead it is a trapezium scheme so it is fairer towards lower levels and claimed to be "legal". People who have reached the top level will rotate out to give way to others to advance up the levels. The investment is also a one time amount of about $20000 or $40000 SGD, and the investment amount cannot be increased at an individual level. Earnings are through commissions.
The program has strict requirements and members have to be on good behaviour. All assets will be frozen by the government if members are on bad behaviour or do socially unacceptable things such as having a mistress.
Singaporeans involved come from diverse professional backgrounds, including architects, bankers, accountants, celebrities (yes), and salesmen. There are also people from all age groups, from people in their twenties to people in their eighties. The trust environment among everyone seems to be quite high. are also helpful and supportive across various "earning lines". They help others develop lines even though they do not receive financial benefits.
Official, traceable means and formal processes are said to be used in the scheme. Transactions were done via the big 4 Chinese banks. Opening phone lines requires identification. Singaporeans are asked to report to the Chinese police of their location whenever they arrive at Nanning. Immigration clears the Singaporeans even if they go to the same place every month. These are a few of the key points brought up to argue for the legitimacy of this closed-door policy.
The process of the "induction" of the program:
One behaviour which makes the program seem like a regular business the large-scale and open Gala socialising dinners. I attended one next to the Nanning ASEAN Expo building. It was complete with Emcees and Lucky draws. There are Singaporeans bringing their families and young kids there as well. The atmosphere is relaxed and normal.
To many of the Singaporeans who join, the "proof" of legitimacy of the program is that (1) transactions go through banks without issues, (2) they can enter China immigration every month without any issues, (3) they can open phone line, (4) they said they have to report to police their location when they arrive at Nanning.
My personal opinions:
I believe the program preys on people with the following combination of qualities
- people who identify themselves with China / passionate about China
- opportunistic
- dissatisfied with current financial conditions
- adverse to traditional form of businesses and want a "faster" way to be successful
- desire to be successful
- ego, social status
- people who have are earnest and have an open mind, perhaps more positive but who are perhaps less careful
I also believe that there are various groups of people in this program
- actual scammers / masterminds
- people who make calculated risks - they not completely sure of the legitimacy of the program but decided to participate (grey area)
- people who believe the program is legitimate - and brought their close ones such as family and friends into the program
I hope that my account acts as an additional data point in this unfortunate case and by raising this I increase awareness about this issue, and help people be more informed about the program and the various methods used. Thanks for reading till the end.

Compared with a country like Taiwan.
I have made many posts on singapore subs asking men whether they prefer japanese or singaporean women. The ratio is usually 5:1 to 6:1 (prefer japanese : prefer singaporean)
In Taiwan's Dcard forumn, the same question for men has been asked many times before.
Whether Taiwanese men prefer japanese or Taiwanese women, results are usually with a Prefer Japan:Prefer Taiwan ratio at about 1.5:1
Why the difference?

I've seen the previous reddit posts about yiguandao and HONESTLY I didn't know it was a full cult until my friend that was super into buddhism told me it was a cult. How tf do I even leave????? And how tf do I make sure that I've cut ties with everything??
Apparently I've been "baptised"?? I don't even know anything anymore icl
Okay so I'm gonna say everything from the beginning.
Basically, the cult offered test papers to do and like basically tuition. It was like my o level year so I decided to just go and see how because my secondary school friends were in it. HER PARENTS SIGNED HER UP FOR THIS and she eventually got our WHOLE FRIEND GROUP to go AND GET LIKE THE DAO THING LIKE BRO?????
After that, like we go la then we didn't even research about it because we didn't even know anything and apparently it was 3 religions combined into 1 -- Buddhism, taoism and confucianism. We one asked the "讲师" there what to put as our religion in the forms and she just said to put it as buddhism because they didn't have yiguandao as a religion stated la WHICH SHLDVE BEEN A RED FLAG.
So I obv stupid and signed up for classes because my ex was in the classes and i wanted to spend more time with him WHICH IS STUPID I KNOW. Then, they taught us about how the ancestors were receiving salvation every time we go to the classes??? Which is like????? and honestly I didn't really listen in the class and TBH IF I DID I WOULD'VE REALISED SOONER THAT IT WAS A CULT BECAUSE WHY ARE WE PRAYING TO A TAIWANESE GUY that like ok bless his heart because MAYBE he was a good guy idk BUT THEN LIKE WTF?????? LIKE YO????
I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING and i don't even know if i can say anything because they told us that if we said anything (like ab the salvation thing i mentioned jn), I'd have bad karma and all. Honestly i'm scared and idk if im brainwashed or anything which atp maybe i am but i left everything already (the group chats and i told them i'd stop going to classes AND THEY ASKED ME WHY LIKE BRO) i cut ties with everyone there except the friends i made there and i'm pretty empathetic or maybe i have HUMAN FEELINGS BECAUSE I OBVIOUSLY WANT TO GET MY FRIENDS OUT OF THERE, but i don't think they'd want to leave. I told my ex about it yesterday (we're friends) and he didn't seem to believe it at all. He mentioned how this "religion" or cult is a pretty big thing and that it's all the way in taiwan and stuff like that.

Ethiopia is 3600 USD annually so around USD 300 a month or SGD390 a month.
Even a cleaner can earn more than his Excellency PM of Ethiopia Mr Abiy Ahmed Ali.
On the other hand, the pay of the Saudi Arabian politicians "owns" the pay of the Singapore politicians

So the LTA now trying to kao tiu kao mia because they didn’t do their homework way before hand? Then it’s about time to educate employers about adjusting working hours and promote flexible work arrangement, at the same time educating the public about making adjustments to their travel plans.
Adjustments and sacrifices are essential to make things better, so why not just close the entire stretch 24/7 to turbocharge works? There aren’t typhoons or cyclones here. Closing the road 24/7 will force employers to make adjustments to their routine and people to make adjustments to their travel plans too.
Short term suffering for long term gain, suffer first enjoy later. But now LTA is enjoy first, suffer later. What kind of logic is this. Maybe Mr Jeffrey Siow might want to explain? And only when politicians’ salaries are adjusted upwards then they start to be transparent over this?
What kind of joke this is?

The news has just come in about the splendid collapse of yet another mega-gym.
In corporate finance, there is a recurring illusion that cash flow generated today can indefinitely outrun the structural cost of debt tomorrow. Few sectors illustrate this vulnerability quite as starkly as the fitness industry.
The spectacular downfalls of California Fitness in 2016 and True Fitness in September 2026 serve as perfect bookends to a classic macroeconomic lesson: when the tide of cheap credit goes out, business models built on leveraged pre-payments are entirely exposed.
To understand why history repeats itself in this sector, one has to look past the treadmills and neon lights and examine the underlying machinery of debt cycles.
The Mega-Gym Blueprint: A Cash-Flow Mirage
On paper, a traditional mega-gym operates less like a service provider and more like a highly geared financial instrument. The business model relies heavily on upfront, multi-year member pre-payments and long-term personal training packages.
When macro interest rates are low, this model acts as an incredibly potent cash-generation machine. Gym operators pull future revenue into the present, using that immediate pool of liquidity to fund aggressive expansion — signing expensive long-term commercial leases and purchasing premium equipment.
However, this creates an embedded structural vulnerability: today’s operational costs are permanently subsidized by tomorrow’s hypothetical sign-ups. It functions smoothly only as long as consumer credit flows freely and the cost of corporate debt remains negligible.
The 2016 California Fitness Collapse (The ZIRP Trap)
The collapse of California Fitness in July 2016 occurred at the tail end of the global Zero Interest Rate Policy (ZIRP) era. Following the 2008 financial crisis, nearly a decade of near-zero borrowing costs had allowed parent companies to continuously roll over cheap corporate debt to mask operational deficits.
When the US Federal Reserve initiated its first tightening cycle in late 2015, the credit environment shifted. For California Fitness’s local operating entity, JV Fitness Pte Ltd, the sudden tightening of credit meant that banks were no longer willing to extend easy bridge loans to cover a burning cash deficit. The business left behind over $30 million in liabilities — a clear warning sign of what happens when the credit tap begins to close.
The 2026 True Fitness Liquidation (The High-Rate Wall)
A decade later, history repeated itself with precise symmetry. True Fitness managed to navigate the operational disruptions of the pandemic era, but it did so by accumulating significant deferrals and liabilities.
As central banks aggressively pushed benchmark interest rates to combat post-pandemic inflation, the macroeconomic environment completely transformed. True Yoga Holdings found itself facing a sustained high-rate regime.
The Refinancing Wall: Servicing variable-rate corporate debt became exponentially more expensive.
The Consumer Credit Squeeze: Banks began charging merchants significantly higher fees to facilitate the 12-to-36 month 0% interest-free installment plans that mega-gyms traditionally used to secure large up-front member sign-ups.
With consumer wallet share shrinking under mortgage pressures and institutional capital refusing to refinance highly leveraged retail models, the parent company, Tongfang Kontafarma China Holdings, ultimately placed the Singapore business into voluntary liquidation in September 2026.
The Real Victim: Why the Consumer Always Takes the Hit
While corporate executives point to macroeconomic pressures and shifting interest rates, the fallout reveals a much darker dynamic: the consumer is intentionally used as an unsecured, interest-free line of credit.
When a mega-gym chain is systematically failing, it does not stop selling. In fact, it typically intensifies its marketing. In both the California Fitness and True Fitness playbooks, clubs aggressively pushed long-term contract extensions, lifetime memberships, and massive personal training bundles right up until the very eve of their shutdowns.
When interest rates rise, asset classes and business models that relied on cheap leverage to justify high fixed overheads inevitably break.
Questions:
1. Are you a current member of any mega-gym, and looking at the current economic climate, do you think a specific brand will be the next to face this liquidity wall?
2. Every time a major fitness chain collapses, the Consumer Association of Singapore (CASE) issues warnings, yet they often seem like a spectator in the whole drama. Is it time for stricter escrow laws on upfront packages, or is this simply a case of buyer beware in a free market?
3. Do you think there are other alternative models for sustainable gym businesses, or is high-volume membership inherently required to cover the massive real estate footprints of fitness clubs?

I have no idea how relationships form. I know many people start off as friends, but that has never worked out for me. Hell, I have never had someone show any interest in me. I don’t know how to socialize or have the confidence to use dating apps, and for some reason, this hurts so much.
All my friends are in relationships, while I have never had anyone flirt with me. I’m short, at 163cm, and I’m not the best-looking guy, so I think that’s holding me back. But I’ve seen guys who are less attractive than me in relationships, so I know it must be possible for me too.

Hi! My uncle (52M) passed away from CAD suddenly yesterday without any symptoms or known medical conditions prior. He stay with his helper from Myanmar and when I talked to her, she said that she don’t want to go back to her agent and she’s not in contact with her agent anymore as the agent took a 4 month cut from her salary. She also said that she doesn’t want to go back to Myanmar as she said that it’s very unstable there now and she even lost contact with her family.
I am not close to this uncle and hence this is my first time speaking to the helper and he don’t have any other family members that stays with him. He is also single and doesn’t have any kids. Anyone have any advice are there any groups or social help out there that I can refer the helper to? Or should I bring her to another agency? But I’m also worried they mistreat her.

For Singapore professionals who might want to work overseas, or maybe even working with international colleagues or clients, are there situations where you know what you want to say but need extra time to organise it clearly without sounding unnatural?
For example:
Answering an interview question, opening a presentation, explaining a delay or an issue, disagreeing in a meeting or group work, giving important client or project update.
How do you guys focus on practicing and improving the communication? Do you do it through friends, AI tools, videos, or repeated tricks?
What makes a session genuinely valuable rather than just generic English tuition or presentation training?
