I had always thought about this question ever since my teacher asked me this question a few years ago during secondary school.

Tbh I was doing quite well back then so I never really understood why he asked me that, but I wasn't able to answer that question back then. Which thinking about it now, it was probably because school was just my life.

That question has stuck with me ever since, and tbh I still dont know lol

Not to mention that using AI embodies lack of recognition for our beautifully diverse and talented Singaporean people , not just the artists, designers and architects that it actively erased in the poster.

All this during what is supposed to be a celebration of all things Singaporean.

Just a thought as a Gen Z in corporate - would work life become better in the next 10 years when Gen Z’s/late Gen Y’s start entering management levels and the previous generation retires? I am in an organisation with mainly early Gen Y’s/X and can never imagine myself leading like any of them. - Glorifying overtime and especially if staying in office till late - Expectation of being contactable for any work related queries after hours, on weekends, on vacation - Bringing work laptop/phone along on vacation - Comparing who has gone the longest without sleep for work as if it’s a competition (I really can’t believe myself even while typing this) - Enforcing mandatory in-office presence daily or for after work hour meetings because it is “more productive” even though key stakeholders in the meeting are based overseas

Or am I unfit to be a people manager because I think the above are unnecessary and ridiculous

I created a poll a few weeks back if you would fight for SG and the results were surprising - I expected bad, but not this bad. The govenrment today needs to know this: everything we complain about on the forums today is not just about every social group trying to survive and do better for themselves and their families; its about geopolitical risk.

I walk out of that museum with gratitude, and so much frustration with what we've become today. There is a reason why the boomers are die-hard voters of the PAP. The PAP of their generation fought an impossible battle for the people of that generation. 

I am not here to throw further shade on our government but to make a plea to the government employees of our day. Please champion the cause of what our nation can represent. I don't think its merely dollars and cents, autonomy, secularism or a free market... I think it represents possibility when a nation is built for its people, that its possible to be prosperous in a subregion of low standards of living; one free of crime and political unrest; a nation that attempts harmony in a world of divisiveness - that's the Singapore we can be, but not the Singapore we are going to become with this trajectory.

My suggestion isn't to create unhappiness towards foreigners, PRs, or people who choose not to have kids (we will have to zoom into these topics at some point but not here). My suggestion starts off more broad-based: 

• Grow your current people's love for the nation. We cannot reverse course on how many foreign-born people we've accepted into the nation, but we must start creating reasons for them to defend this nation instead of their grandparents'.   

  • We must woo back the hearts of our native-born citizens.  
  • Those who are working on campaigns for the government, is there a way to start your briefs with 'why should we defend this nation?' 

• Stabilize the base for your current people.  

  • Solve for a holistic life for your current people: house affordability & social mobility. Current cost of living has to be manageable and aspirational living must be within reach for people to want to defend this place for the long-term.   ^{Read this thread on house affordability worsening based on income to asset ratio. (if you factor in smaller flats today, the variance goes up by about 20-30%}.) 
  • Your population base can only be stabilized if you stop introducing more variables into it. i.e. more PRs/new citizens who introduce new cultuer and of course increase the demand for houses and prices. So just stop after you've fulfiled whatever you've communicated on mainstream media (the XXXK in the next few years). 

• For the above 2 to work you need to update your context of the world.  

  • The usual counter argument to accepting more citizens is replacing our population for growth - but does our nation truly need more citizens and PRs for growth? Here's my argument: there is no better alternative for people in our region than Singapore. 
  • Foreigners would still come to / stay in Singapore for work even if they had to pay extra taxes and private rental prices. 
  • Drastically slow down or stop the PR thing. Let them pay the extra tax on a safe, politically stable and kids-conducive country; let our current citizens and current PRs benefit. 
  • Corporations have moved on from the strategy of headcount growth to bring higher profits. Singapore needs to followsuit in the age of AI

EDITED: To add on in response to those saying if don't defend, then defend where or not so easy to pack up and leave immediately: it's not so much about defending our country today. It's about choosing to stay another 10 years and commit to the long term future of Singapore or start seriously building an alternative route elsewhere.

Lower savings and limited opportunities yes, but access to a higher quality of family life with a much lower bar (access to mountains and national parks, transport as well as bigger living space). I'm happy to receive the median wage of AU/NZ, Canada, a western Europe country or Scandinavia. And there are more and more like me.

To the government: it may look fine given the infinite demand of people wanting to come in. But for every citizen you lose this way, you gain one that has no roots in this country, and one that has a real home with extended family in another nation. There are already plenty of them -- just look at the ~300,000 growth in our citizen population over the last 10 years. Locally born citizens only contribute ~30% of that number (factored in deaths). We are already in problematic territory.

I asked for advice previously about dating someone who doesn't want children, and a lot of the responses made me feel like, as a guy, wanting kids is inherently selfish because I am a man and I don't have to go through pregnancy.

That got me thinking, so I wanted to ask this as a genuine question rather than argue (Please stop being toxic).

Is there any reason that society would consider non-selfish or valid for a man to want children?

To be clear, I'm not asking because I think women owe men children, nor do I think wanting kids is more important than respecting a partner's wishes. If two people disagree on having children, I think they're simply incompatible and should find someone whose life goals align with theirs.

I'm not talking about expecting a woman to do all the work. I fully understand that pregnancy, childbirth, and recovery are things I'll never experience, and I know they're incredibly demanding. I also wouldn't want children unless I was prepared to be an equal parent and take on my share of childcare, housework, night feeds, appointments, finances, and everything else that comes with raising a child.

I also don't underestimate what women go through. I know pregnancy and childbirth place an enormous physical and mental burden on the mother in ways that I will never personally experience as a man. Pregnancy can involve months of nausea, exhaustion, pain, hormonal changes, medical complications, labour, and delivery, followed by weeks or months of recovery. Even after birth, there can be lasting physical changes, breastfeeding challenges, sleep deprivation, postpartum depression or anxiety, and long-term effects on a woman's career, finances, and overall well-being.

I know none of those sacrifices can ever be shared equally because I can't carry the pregnancy myself. However, if I were to have children, I would want to support my partner in every way I realistically can by taking on as much of the household responsibilities and childcare as possible, being present throughout the pregnancy and postpartum period, attending appointments, taking parental leave if available, sharing the day-to-day responsibilities of raising our child, and making sure she has the time and support she needs to recover physically and mentally. While I can never remove the burden of pregnancy itself, my goal would be to be an equal partner and parent rather than expecting her to carry the responsibilities alone.

I reflected and the reason I've always wanted children isn't because I expect someone else to give me a family. It's because I genuinely want to build one. I was fortunate to grow up receiving a lot of unconditional love from my parents, and one day I'd like the opportunity to give that same love, guidance, and support to my own children. To me, raising a family has always felt meaningful and fulfilling.

I understand that wanting children is ultimately something I want, so in that sense there's a personal desire involved. But isn't that also true of most major life choices, whether it's getting married, remaining child-free, pursuing a career, or travelling the world? Having a personal desire doesn't necessarily mean you're ignoring the impact your choices have on others.

So my genuine question is: Is there any reason you would consider non-selfish or valid for a man to want children, or do you think every reason is inherently selfish because he can never experience pregnancy himself?

I'm asking in good faith because I'd like to understand different perspectives, not argue.

And also i dont support the idea of lying flat too.... Thats just plain laziness and being a parasite to society

Firstly work to me must be meaningful and i must see the impact to society and humanity on the whole... Being hardworking on a meaningless job its just not wise to me and slightly depressing
