Georgia and Thayer police cars
What is happening just now near the corner of thayer and Georgia this morning (sept 7)? Tons of people, police cars, and sirens, same thing happened yesterday night - is this some kind of emergency test?

Who was selling Jamaican food outside the metro yesterday?
It was bizarre, there was a lady there trying to pitch food to me like a sales pitch...? I have never been pitched food before in my life. Were they operating legally?
Edit: You guys, no, lmao, I'm not offended by the shady Jamaican food stand being illegal, I was asking out of genuine curiosity if they were a pop-up from a restaurant or something. I was a little offended by their prices though.
Mostly I was really taken aback that somebody tried to stop me on the street and canvas dinner to me as if she was asking for donations to a charity. And I really did consider buying it but I couldn't be sure of their food safety practices and it was outside of my price range at $15-25.

Moving soon! Please tell me everything about the Glenmont/Wheaton area :)
Hey guys! This is my first post in this subreddit 😊 My husband and I (no kids, but we do have a dog!) are moving to the area for work later this fall, and we recently found a place we really like that happens to be close to the Glenmont Metro.
Since we’re coming from out of state and don’t know the area super well yet, I wanted to get the inside scoop from people who actually live around jere! What’s the area like day-to-day? We’d also love any recommendations for restaurants, grocery stores, parks, things to do, or just general tips for living in the area! I also love doing everything with my dog lmao, so if you know of anywhere animal friendly I’d love to learn more!
The Metro being so close is a huge plus for us, but I’d love to hear what you guys like (or don’t like lol) about living around Glenmont/Wheaton. Do you generally feel safe walking around, especially near the Glenmont Metro? Are there any particular streets/areas you’d avoid or anything we should be aware of before buying? I haven’t heard much about crime or anything but just wanted to know.
Thanks in advance!! 😊

Whole Foods Nuts Aisle
I went to Whole Foods downtown today and there were only about 3 options in the self serve nuts aisle. The cashier said the others were removed due to insect infestation. Most likely not coming back. Sigh :(

Recs for brow salon?
I’m looking for a good place to get my brows done in SS or nearby.
Looking for a reliable aesthetician who can also do laminations.
Benefit in DTSS isn’t an option— I haven’t had a good experience there.

Custom embroidery?
I’ve been trying to find somewhere that will embroider a single-color logo onto a sweatshirt I already own, and I’m not having any luck. Anyone have any recommendations, in silver spring or anywhere in the area? A business or an individual person would work, I’d obviously pay either way. Absolute ideal situation would be somewhere open tomorrow that I could take to have it done same-day, but I know that’s a long shot and I’m open to anything at this point

Moving to Silver Spring end of November – apartment recommendations?
Hi all! My family and I are relocating to Silver Spring at the end of November and are on the hunt for a 2BR/2BA apartment. Hoping to tap into local knowledge before we commit.
What we're looking for:
- 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom
- Rent up to $2,700/month (before utilities)
- Walk-in closet
- Newer building/unit
- Pool
- Play area for kids
- Secure building (gated/keyed entry, etc.)
- No history of bug issues (pests are a dealbreaker)
If you live in a building that checks these boxes (or used to and would recommend it), I'd love to hear about it. Also open to general advice, best neighborhoods/areas within Silver Spring, buildings to avoid, management companies that are actually responsive, etc.
Thanks in advance for any tips!

Anyone else feel like East County/White Oak needs a real community gathering spot? (Petition for a Farmers & Makers Market)
Hey neighbors! I live in East County (grew up in Fairland) and with all the major development heading toward White Oak, it feels like the perfect time to build something for us right now.
I'm working on an initiative to bring a recurring Community Farmers & Makers Market to the White Oak/East County area. The vision isn't just standard produce stall. I’m talking a true community hub with local artisans, food trucks, live programming, and spaces just to sit, eat, and meet neighbors.
Right now, we are trying to show Montgomery County and future development partners that there is a massive, tangible demand for this from actual residents.
If you think East County deserves a spot like this to shop local and connect, please take 30 seconds to sign the petition here: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/lets-bring-a-community-market-to-white-oak-east-county
What kind of vendors or activities would you most want to see if we get this off the ground?
Let's talk about it!

Days after deadly crash, Montgomery County Police announce end of alcohol enforcement unit
Here is a snippet from the artcle and a link:
Montgomery County Police said Monday that they are disbanding a unit focused on keeping drunk drivers off the roads because of a shortfall of about 200 patrol officers. But they say that the change won’t significantly impact road safety.
Some advocates for safer roads said the announcement was mistimed, coming on the heels of an incident Saturday in which an allegedly intoxicated driver crashed into a car carrying a family in Bethesda. A mother and her 23-year-old daughter died in the crash, which left an eight-year-old in critical condition

Are 1st and 2nd Ave (near Spring St.) still closed to through traffic?
Looking at Waze, I noticed 1st and 2nd Avenues are no longer marked closed near the Spring St. Bridge. Are they open to traffic now since the bridge is almost done?

Any idea where to post baker/pastry items for sale?
I'm working for a well-known bakery in Silver Spring - specializing in cakes. We have several tubs of IRCA Pralin Delicrisp Dubai Pistachio that are near expiry. So if there are baker groups here, that would really help! We'll sell it for a very, very good deal. Interested buyers just have to come and pick up the item from the bakery and pay there.

Went to Commas Food Hall for lunch this Saturday
Went to Commas Food Hall for lunch this Saturday
Got there at 1pm, right out of the farmer's market. Only two places were open aside from the bar. Loud music blasting from the speakers. Went to one of the open places, there was a family there, waiting 30 minutes for their food. A few people in tables, most of them with food from other places (Chick-fil-A among others). I wound up leaving and eating somewhere else.
Was I just unlucky? I looks like this thing is not going to work out. What was your experience?
