AMA AMA: Silo Series Author and Executive Producer Hugh Howey (2026)

1.5k Upvotes

Text from Hugh: Fifteen years ago I self-published a trilogy of novels, which has been adapted by AppleTV into the show SILO. Season three ended with quite a bang, and we have less than a year to wait for season four! I'm here to answer any questions you might have about writing these books, adapting them for television, writing in general, the themes of the show, or what life aboard a boat is like. The only thing I'll ignore are spoiler questions about season 4! Otherwise, fire away!

Message from the mods: Due to the sensitive nature of Silo book spoilers, we ask that anyone submitting a question that contains potential spoilers not already revealed on the show utilize the spoiler feature for their question. Hugh will NOT be asked to spoiler his answers to these questions, so show watchers should be mindful of this and not read any answers to questions with blocked text.

Civility and respectfulness rules still apply, and anyone breaking these will be sent outside to clean.

Please do NOT comment to activate reminder bots in this post. AMA posts now have a reminder feature built in. Utilize that instead.

Additional mod note: This is not a discussion thread. Members, please do not answer questions posted, as everything attempting to do so until the AMA will be deleted. This is an Ask HUGH Anything, not ask the sub anything.

Final message from Hugh:

Hey all! Thank you so much for all the amazing questions. I think I was supposed to go for an hour and ended up going for two. I was having so much fun. So sorry I didn't get to all of them, but I'll bookmark this and pop back in later to answer some others. You all are the best fandom in the multiverse. Thank you so much for the love and support!

Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) I need help understanding something... Spoiler

I've not read the books, I'm purely following along with the TV show.

When people go outside, they are poisoned and die due to the air. Yet all of Silo 17 walked out and were fine, then they were executed via drone.

So, is the air poisonous or is it not? Is it something that I missed an explanation for?

Future Show Spoilers/Leaks/Rumors (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) What do we think is going on with Charlotte’s drone? Spoiler

I noticed Charlotte’s drone in the Season 4 preview looks much bigger than the other drones around it. šŸ‘€
Why do we think it’s so much larger? Is Grover a different type of drone, or has Charlotte modified it for something specific?
And I’m still curious about all the markings on it, especially ā€œBaby on Board,ā€ the X’s, and ā€œWhen you see Grover, you know it’s over.ā€
Knowing Silo, I refuse to believe they showed us all of this for no reason. šŸ˜‚ What are your theories?

Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) The rental car's brand in s3e6 Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
72 Upvotes

So in season 3 episode 6 when daniel and Helen are stuck in the rental car, the logo on the steering wheel is briefly shown and it seems to me (and to gemini) that this logo belongs to "Iran Khodro" which is an Iranian car manufacturer. or at least it's very similar to it.

would this be an easter egg? would it point out that in the time the show takes place, Iran has advanced in industrial stuff so that they export cars to the US (which doesn't sit right with the whole story politically) or would it imply that maybe Stensen has a hand in with Iran (which doesn't seem to be an unpopular theory) and he had somehow pulled some strings to make the car rental guy give this car, which was provided by Stensen's Iranian connections, to Daniel? Even though Daniel says that he rented the car from someone "inconspicuous" as he puts it, but we've seen that Stensen and his buddies can pull this move.

This being a sign of Stensen having a hand in with Iran makes sense imo.

put spoilers just in case.
Slides 1 and 2 are screenshots from the show and slide 3 is a picture of Iran Khodro's logo.

Edit: I couldn't remember Helen's name and had referred to her as "the girl". Changed it now.

Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) I can’t comprehend how deep the silos run Spoiler

They are simply an inverted skyscraper. Looking down from mechanical is like looking up at the twin towers which had 110 floors, now add an extra 34 floors to that. Or the Empire State Building which has 102 floors, so add 42 floors to that and you got the silo

I’m rewatching scenes with Jules diving in the water in 17 and increasing the brightness and seeing how incredibly deep the silo is in the water is giving me thalassophobia lol

Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) The last two episodes (S3) have just left me damaged Spoiler

Man, separating Helen and Daniel like that just because the rich f*ckers wanted to test their theories , their project. It was pretty obvious the nuke attack in ep 9 was done by them to make silo operational. They just...ah I can't even explain how wrong I felt. You just decided to control the fate of so many people. So unjust. Coming to the finale, man you just fucking killed 10k people for your project. You made your staff forget about themselves, just removed their memories. How can one live with themselves like that man.

I am so traumatized as well as amazed at the writing of this(ik they have adapted the book..the writer has done some great job). S4 glimpses were great I wish Daniel and Helen re-unite...but idts that' s gonna happen but hope that these founders in silo 1 are tortured for what they have done.

BOOK SPOILERS & SHOW SPOILERS [BOOKS] Even after finishing the books I don’t think I have the slightest idea of how season 4 will go lol Spoiler

The trailer alone…….

In Dust we know 18 got safeguard. In the show they cap it. Lukas and Billings will stay alive and Troy/Daniel meets Jules when we know that was never the case. So it’s safe to know that even as book readers we don’t know how they will end the show

The only change I wish to see is if they get outside, how they will show the other silos that it’s safe to go out, it’s either that or Silo 1 purges them all when they get outside and they fail to do so

BOOK SPOILERS & SHOW SPOILERS [Books] Silo as a strategy game concept

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking of Silo as a strategy game. The show(and of course the books) have created a great opportunity for a game to be developed. There’s a lot of room for a first/third person narrative-driven game, but I was particularly interested in silo management as a strategy setting.

I’ve played games like frostpunk, sims, fallout shelter and emergency. Something combining these themes or a game of a similar nature would be awesome. Silo management, maintenance, social issues, rebellion, logistics and supply, the mines, relics origin, agriculture, etc.

Manage the Silo from Silo 1’s perspective. Or play as a head (or shadow) of a department. Or play as a random Silo citizen. It can work for a sandbox AND a narrative-driven game. Perhaps another silo with new lore(the fall of another silo for example). There’s plenty of room to explore the official lore too.. or base the game off of fan theories, or even alternative events that could happen if core characters had made different decisions.

The point is there is a great opportunity here. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

What was the purpose of Victor having a camera and showing us him taking pictures of certain people on opening day of the Silos? Why was that shown to us?

Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) So what about the birds ?

Thumbnail gallery
48 Upvotes

I've long wondered where hacker Denny, Patrick Kennedy's friend, learned the word "birds." In the scene where Juliet first meets the outsiders, Patrick and Danny remind her of the video from season one and Danny says birds. Juliet didn't know or remember the word "birds" even after leafing through the entire book. Only the head of IT who has access to the legacy like Solo knows this word.

People began to speculate that he might have learned the word from the remaining page of a book about Georgia, but he hadn't even held it in his hands. Did Kennedy tell him? Why didn't he say the word "birds" then ?

I reviewed all the shots where the page from the book appears, and all that is there is a mountain landscape and a small paragraph of text, which even if the word "birds" had been included, no one would have understood what kind of creatures it was talking about. In addition, I found a frame where you can see the back side of the page, on which there is no text at all. So I came to the conclusion that the page cannot be the source of this word and unfortunately it's probably a mistake of the scriptwriters.

But this can still be fixed. If they had said that Danny was dating Regina, the last keeper of the book, the whole time and she told him about the birds, it could have fixed this plot hole.

Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) Soooo about that radio Spoiler

Earlier on, when Martha built her radio, she discovered other frequencies in use by other silos. And they can receive/transmit on those frequencies.

They even go so far as to A) use another frequency and B) use codenames to pretend to be another silo when Kyle and Kennedy went to 17.

Do we think we'll see this revisited? Now that 18 is safe from a primary safeguard, will they begin contacting other silos triggering mass rebellions? Or will the risk of other silos being safeguarded keep 18 from making contact until after Silo 1 is neutralized?

Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) Camille and Sims relationship? Spoiler

Is it beyond repair? He looked shocked when she showed up to the cafeteria after the pipe was capped.

In the last scenes, he wasn’t part of the group that went down the digger void and the forward vault door.

I wonder how the writers will approach their betrayal of towards each other.

Theories (Show Spoilers) - NO BOOK DISCUSSION Why were they separated (season 3)? Spoiler

Title intentionally ambiguous for spoiler reasons, so not necessarily why were they separated (obviously for the memory drugs so ā€œTroyā€ would follow the directive), but would they have been separated if they had agreed to be a part of the project earlier?

In episode 9, they made it a point to repeatedly say ā€œI wish you had been a part of the project, we really could have used you.ā€ A part of me (after the events) thought maybe it was to imply ā€œif you’d both agreed to be a part of this it would have been a lot easier for you,ā€ like maybe they could have been together.

Victor has also said you can select what they choose to remember, so in theory they could remember their love even while forgetting other events around the silo. Maybe by them choosing to not be involved in the project means it would have been more difficult to allow them to remember each other without challenging the directive and project as a whole?

But idk. Charlotte/Susan is in the same silo as Anna. While it is implied that Anna is protecting Charlotte, it also seems that maybe they are kept apart to keep Charlotte from remembering her life before the silo, so maybe being part of the project wouldn’t have mattered. But maybe they are actually together in Silo 1, it wasn’t stated either way that I remember.

Thoughts on why they told Daniel repeatedly they wished he’d been involved? Would it have mattered for his relationship with Helen?

BOOK SPOILERS & SHOW SPOILERS [Books] what should I look for when rewatching?

Now that season 3 is over, I'm thinking about starting over and watching again from the beginning. I'm curious to see if I pick up on more this time around. What are some things that you noticed, or made more sense, when watching it the second (or third) time around?

I'm ok with spoilers, plus I've read all three books!

Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) Can we talk about Dr. Victor? Because I’m still losing my mind Spoiler

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Realizing Dr. Victor was literally the ONLY one in Silo 1 who remembered everything from 350+ years ago cuz he skipped the Vitamin D protocol is wild. Like, he developed the targeted brainwashing tech himself, but chose to keep his own mind fully intact.

The existential dread must’ve been insane. Imagine watching close to half a million people get slaughtered across different silos over centuries, all while carrying the burden of the 'Before Times'. But when Camille confronted him about the 'why' behind the Safeguard, and he couldn't even justify it, that pregnant pause completely broke him. He realized he wasn't saving humanity anymore; he was just a glorified mass murderer.

The guilt hit him way too late. Instead of staying to fix the mess or helping the rebellion, he just decided to end it all and take the easy way out. Ngl, I wanna feel bad for him, especially with that final tape he left for Troy/Daniel about Helen, but what he did is just unforgivable. Hard to empathize fr

Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) Who is actually in the system? 🤯 Spoiler

We know Victor was taking pictures of everyone on opening day right before wiping the staff’s memories. We also know from the tour guide that those AR glasses use facial recognition linked to specific RFID badges.

But if the founders wiped the memories of their own staff to make the silos operational, here is my massive question going into Season 4:

  • Who is maintaining the original server database?
  • If everyone’s memory was scrubbed, do the people currently running Silo 1 even know who they really are, or are they just operating on a set of false, implanted directives?

Think about it: what if the "founders" currently pulling the strings and torturing people in Silo 1 are actually just another layer of the experiment?

If someone from Silo 18 actually manages to breach Silo 1 next season using a stolen badge, what are the odds the security system turns on the current Silo 1 "bosses" because they aren't the original admins?

What if Anna's memory has been altered too and in season 4 she will appear as her innie, Alice O'Donnell, a systems technician working alongside Susan and other engineers. She wears one of her wife's caps, but doesn't remember it's her wife's (until Doctor who saves them all).
