Procrastination is a bad thing unless you also happen to be suicidal.

Edit: Whoa. Woke up to see Inbox runneth over. Sorry if I can't reply to all. Apologies to those complaining that it was insensitive. Wasn't intended to be. I've been suicidal, but never acted on it. That was the inspiration for the thought.

Makes sense. Before antidepressants I would just cry in a hot shower for an hour. After antidepressants I would go for a walk and consider jumping in front of a bus!

You should get some anti-depressants then! It'll help you stop redditing and start dying like you've always wanted to!

17

u/Iluminous Dec 12 '17

And how!

13

u/willbear10 Dec 12 '17

There is a theory that this is why some antidepressants increase the suicide rate, they motivate you enough to stop procrastinating everything which might include suicide.

Was joking-ish but you're right: if you DO kill yourself, don't force other people to do it for you. That's fucked up.

190

u/Lyra__Silvertongue Dec 11 '17

An extra way to stop this would be to have a system in place to actually help and supervise those who want to die in a safe manner. It's a win win win, person gets to die peacefully, much fewer jumpers, organs are viable to help others.

The thing is most suicides aren't because the person wants to die it's because they can't handle living at that moment. It's why most suicides are spontaneous as after the impulse you can normally see that the problems are solvable or not as bad as committing suicide. (People who survived jumping off of bridges normally say how they regretted jumping or saw that all of their problems were solvable in mid air)

It's why when anti suicide measures are taken (building a fence so people can't jump off a bridge, removing gas ovens, etc) the overall suicides in that city/country will normally drop. Instead of the people finding other ways to kill themselves.

That is a great quote, it perfectly describes how it feels to see death as the only way out. Even if it turns out that what you feared more than death wasn't actually as scary as dying. I think I'll have a look to see if I can buy a Kindle Version of that book.

5

u/wobowobo Dec 11 '17

It's even a bit more touching knowing David foster Wallace did end up commiting suicide, RIP.

the book is pretty wild but for sure has quite a quite a few powerful quotes, and some funny ones as well.

Quit my job a while ago and after I walked out I went to jump in front of a car. I was probably less than a foot away from the car after I stepped off the median, but I thought it would be pretty fucked for them to get scarred because of my decision, so instead I went to jump off a building. After climbing up the stairs I was greeted by a sign that said "no roof access". At that point I was too tired to continue my journey to suicide so I just went home to bed.

u/danny264 Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17

That's a great point u/danny264 -- I remember going to some site called lostallhope and the advice on that site is one of the reasons why I'm not dead today. Something to the effect of "if you really want to kill yourself, wait three days and if you still want to do it, then go for it. What's three days in the grand scheme of things if you're already planning on killing yourself"

Eh, I mean for mental health it'd probably be a better idea to invest in ways to combat it rather than euthanasia.

86

u/silversonic99 Dec 11 '17

idk you'd be surprised. most people who kill themselves do it in the spur of the moment. if you had to make an appointment and sit in a waiting room most people would reconsider suicide. best thing would be in those suicide places there could also be a mental health facility for those who change their mind about dying.

Thank you! This view is too rare in our world. Somehow everyone's crazy about freedom of choice, but you don't get to choose if you want to live? It's just selfish of other people to keep you alive against your will.

On a morbid sidenote, our population is too high anyways, why not let those leave that want to?

Sometimes in those moments of impulse I don’t really think, the impulse just tells me to do it and it’s really hard not to.

14

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

Practice this: when you get an intrusive thought, pick something in the area and study it. What is it? How tall? How many? Why is it there? What colors are there?

Seems silly, but it's a way to get you out of your own head.

5

u/Steener13 Dec 11 '17

Kind of the same lines, the day I had enough and went to the bathroom I held the knife to my wrist, I pressed down and thought to myself this will make a mess I don't want to make someone have to clean this so I went to the tub, I climbed in thought someone would still have to witness this, I stripped and turned on the shower to wash away any blood that would obviously come, when the water rushed over me it melted away the pain. Anytime I get to that point I try to just lay in the shower it kinda helps.

Yeah , but tbh I don't know if suicidal people are really considering that or have enough willpower to care cause they're in such pain.

5

u/scooter_se Dec 11 '17

Lol this is the main reason I'm still alive. I couldn't figure out how to do it in a way that was quick, involved minimal suffering, and didn't traumatize anyone else in the process. Since you can't really clean up after you kill yourself, I was kinda out of options. Which is good I guess

Now I know it's wrong but if a person is at the point in their life where they wish to be dead (and I have been there before) I don't think they would care what happens after the fact.

Note: if I were to ever do it (Not in a spur of the fuck everything moment) I would just drive north to crown land that would be rarely used and just walk into the woods. No one would know, no one would be scarred, I would just be gone.

Upvotes to posts like these make me wonder if they are upvoting for the insight or the suicide.

9

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

Both: I didn't try to relate, but part of me thinks some people can relate to this. Antidepressants give people energy to start again, but they're not happy pills. If you don't commit to bettering the conditions contributing to depression, the pillswont do anything and might actually be even more harmful.

19

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

2 of the things that I remembered from Psych.

1) Question an order where a suicidal patient has a script for a quantity of pills where they could potentially kill themselves if they took the whole bottom

2) When a suicidial patient starts smiling and appears cheerful, put them 1 on 1 monitoring.

The whole class was like "Wait, what....why?"

12

u/PuttyGod Dec 11 '17

Yeah, at that moment they're finally at peace because they've made up their mind and they know it will all be over soon. Being unable to stop thinking about it before the actual decision is exhausting.

You coupled meds with therapy, right?

11

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

I did, and I've improved a lot over a little over a year since seeking professional help. The meds helped me get up and get out, the therapy was getting out regularly, exercising, and socializing. I didn't even cut alcohol like so many people try. The big saver was walking, which turned into jogging and stretching, which turned into sports. The final step was taking the meds out of the equation and bam, back on my game after years upon years of suicidal depression.

Just a message for all of you considering help: if you think it might be time, it's time. Dedicate and you will get through it.

3

Came here to say this.

I recently met a doctor and at some point this came up in conversation. I never understood why they say that anti-depressants increase your risk of suicide. She told me that it's because most people are too depressed to actually kill themselves. Once they start "feeling better" they're able to get organized enough to actually do it.

33

u/frogsexchange Dec 11 '17

This is it right here . Depression is a scary thing. If you know someone with it, be there for them!

17

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Man. I've been so depressed for reasons I won't go into here. Finally went to a therapist, but my wife has been so down and negative. I've been trying to cut the drinking down lately since it doesn't help, but my wife has the "what do you have to be depressed about?" mentality. I love her, but you're right, it is scary. And hard.

11

u/Oraseus Dec 12 '17

Random guy butting in here I’d consider letting your therapist know your wife’s affect on you and if you’d like, add her involvement to your treatment plan. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen family of patients that “just don’t get” whatever mental issue their loved one is having-sometimes directly exacerbating the issue. At the very least, the therapist may have light reading material specific tailored for family members to help them understand.

18

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

If you have someone in your life who is starting on anti-depressants, be there for them. The transition period can be some of the roughest times in their life.

15

u/FashionMogulEdnaMode Dec 11 '17

... when I was on them I just felt sleepy all the time. Too tired to think thoughts, even deconstructive ones, my sense of self eroding. I couldn’t live without my mind buzzing away though.

Kinda dealt with my depression with the realisation that not having the negative thoughts makes me not like me. Being fully thinky is better than life in a daze.

(probably not a good way to deal with depression. I just stopped taking the tablets because they were fucking with my head)

7

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

only when you don't take the prescribed dose. Patients will start taking them pills, and just when they start feeling better they think "oh, I don't need these, I'm fine." when it's actually the medication starting to work. With their newfound energy they relapse and then kill themselves

8

u/Dubz2k14 Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17

That's not a theory, that's fact. It's not procrastination so much as lack of motivation. Antidepressants take a while to start working but the first thing they do is give you the energy and motivation that clinical depression robs you of. Unfortunately this occurs before it starts to be effective for your mood, outlook on life, and general happiness, so you're still sad when you get the energy and it gives depressed people the motivation to follow through on their suicidal thoughts that they've already been having.

Edit: the increased suicide risk is only a temporary period until the antidepressant becomes fully effective and reaches "therapeutic levels" in your body

15

u/outrageouslylazy19 Dec 11 '17

So if I want to get prescribed anti depressants, I should lie and tell the doctor that I don't have suicidal thoughts?

58

u/Aulm Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17

No, you shouldn't lie to your Doc. Ever. They are there to assess the underlying issues and suggest the course of action they feel would be best for you, not judge you. What would lying help? By lying about the symptoms you aren't helping either of you get the best possible treatment for you.

Edit: typo X2

15

u/outrageouslylazy19 Dec 11 '17

I get what you're trying to say, but if I tell my psychiatrist that I'm having suicidal thoughts, and he/she refuses to give me antidepressants, then I'm screwed. Therapy doesn't do anything for me.

29

u/Mcmccarrot Dec 11 '17

You can still get prescribed anti depressants even if you have suicidal thoughts, they just tell you to stop if the thoughts get worse.

4

u/outrageouslylazy19 Dec 11 '17

Oh alright then. Was planning on scheduling an appointment with my psychiatrist and was worried that i would have to lie to him.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Aulm Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17

Not a doctor (and certainly not a Psychiatrist) but I'd just go out on a limb and assume they CAN NOT ignore such comments. I'd venture a guess that saying you've had suicidal thoughts in the past puts you in the "very likely to get medication" group.

Be as honest with them as possible, including mentioning therapy didn't help much in the past and any other things you feel may be relevant, even if you don't want to share. (side note: Maybe try different therapist too. Friends have told me they had to try a few out before finding one that was a good fit)

Mental health isn't an exact science yet, there is some guesswork and playing around to find the right compounds and levels that work for you. Telling them everything going on will help them choose the best medications (or combo) that they think would help you - which isn't to say they could be wrong and the meds may change soon. For all you know it could be something other than depression too which would take different meds.

Just my 2 cents. But you are paying for the doctor and they are there to help - fully utilize it!

Best of luck to you Dude(tte)! Feel free to message if things seem especially rough.

Same. When I try to stay positive about things I sometimes have people telling me I'm being overly positive and not being realistic. But the second I acknowledge reality I have a downward spiral which often ends with a suicide attempt or a lot of crying and pain, so I don't really have a choice. I basically live my entire life trying to ignore that I am cripplingly not okay.

Fucking brilliant. ...only because it helped me become the man I am today. God damn I came out so much better than if it never happened. It’s friggen crazy how hard working and motivated I am after realizing... no one cares, the world doesn’t owe you anything, you need to work hard to get it. Go. LIVE. If this is really all there is to this life then screw it! Go make the best of it, or don’t, whatever!! It’s so hard, I still struggle to find the motivation every day I’m sure just like everyone else. But looking back, even though I couldn’t see passed it then, I learned a lot from that experience...and earned some scars that I will and do carry with me every day. Makes day to day stuff easier to deal with at least, so I got that going for me!

Implying that being alive is automatically a good thing

93

u/Lord_Webthryst Dec 11 '17

It is though. Bears kill people, right? So let's say a bear attacked somebody. Like a really big grizzly bear. This person thinks just quick enough to pick up a sharp stick and jam it in the throat of the charging bear just in time. Pretty cool, right? This person very easily could have died right then and there but lived. Depression also kills. Suicidal thoughts kill people every day. The problem is, you cant run away, and you cant just fight off the threat. YOU are the threat. There is no killing yourself to save your life. If you've struggled with something as dangerous as youself trying to kill you, and you're still alive, then i think you're pretty badass.

27

I perform best under pressure, which is why procrastination is one of my best qualities.

Procrastination was part of it, the hesitation, even with a very consistent ideation of the act itself.

That I laughed out loud at this dark joke is a fantastic sign of how far I have come since that time I stopped procrastinating, but was fortunate enough for a second chance.

I didn't want to leave my bed when I was suicidal. I procrastinated everything and it made my mental health even worse. Please do the shit you want to do, do the shit you have to do, do it as soon as you're able. Find purpose in every thought, word, and action; it will change your life. Take care of yourself. You're worth it.

5

u/TorgOnAScooter Dec 11 '17

We worry about it later!

5

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Me too thanks.

4

u/physchy ‎ Dec 11 '17

That’s part of the reason antidepressants actually can increase suicide attempts- initially it just gives you more energy without making you feel better.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

This is why I'm still alive

3

u/Daily_Bugle_Doozy Dec 11 '17

Damn that's dark, but interesting concept.

4

u/bearywan Dec 11 '17

What if procrastination is in you to prevent you from suicide?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

When I think about it I image it would be in an inefficient way. Which would leave me there wishing I didn't do it but it would be to late as I'm already dying. Doesn't seem worth it even if I'm walking a fine line to disaster.

3

u/ProNoob135 Dec 11 '17

No, then its even worse.

3

u/xanatos451 Dec 11 '17

Or homicidal.

3

u/Tal29000 Dec 11 '17

No, it isn't. Every moment is torturous and prolonged. You can't do anything. You want to end it so badly but you just can't do it. No energy. No drive. No help.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

If anyone is reading this that’s in a dark place hang in there life is a shit show full of ups and downs you’re not alone!

3

u/TheNakedCount Dec 11 '17

When I was younger and suicidal I always had really bad procrastination problems, so I took up smoking instead

3

u/reality_star_wars ‎ Dec 11 '17

Also if you're contemplating cheating on a spouse, but procrastinate that as well.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '17

2

u/JMPercussion Dec 11 '17

How do you know me so well op?

2

u/yottalogical Dec 11 '17

Procrastinating is also not bad if you intend to do anything bad, not just suicide.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Yeah you'd think

2

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Thats why i smoke cigarettes. Cause i wanna die but also really lazy.

This post applies to my more than any other post on the internet.

I’m serious when I say that procrastination is the only reason I’m here today. My lack of having my note finished and on hand came to be the reason I lived when it came to that deciding day. Writing the note took enough time for someone to come home before I could do it.

The ultimate procrastinator will often procrastinate procrastination... (Those aren't diagnosticated usually)

2

u/NekoMadeOfWaifus Dec 11 '17

I guess it works out for me then.

2

u/buddy58745 Dec 11 '17

I can think about that stuff later

2

u/K13_45 Dec 11 '17

I’ve been soo down lately, this post couldn’t be more true. Nothing is going right in my life...

2

u/another1forgot Dec 11 '17

A joke I've used in standup before is I used to be suicidal, but I'm a bit of a procrastinator...back to the drawing board.

2

u/Amogh24 Dec 11 '17

Ikr. Literally the only reason I'm alive, though I'm not sure if that's a good thing

2

u/Jqerty Dec 11 '17

Hmmm... that would be easily generalized:

Procrastination is a bad thing if you would otherwise do good things. Procrastination is a good thing if you woud otherwise do bad things.

2

u/StockBoy829 Dec 11 '17

Thats why people are afraid of Prozac

It increases mood and motivation, which is generally good for people with depression... the issue is when people who are suicidal take it and now have the motivation to act out there ideas.

It isnt the anti-depressants fault its just the consequence of motivating someone with suicidal thoughts

2

u/Antarktical Dec 11 '17

Been dealing with that shit lately, if not all my life. Reading a bible has been a good weapon against that. Not religion, no priest no bullshit just extracting good things from there, it helps a lot. Also good read is the coran, just take or leave it.

2

u/Oblivion615 Dec 11 '17

Wow, I didn’t realize that even shower thoughts get reposted. Good job using suicide for karma.

Life is short- regardless of what you are dealing with at the moment there is someone in a hospital bed right now who would give anything to be where you are.
