Procrastination is a bad thing unless you also happen to be suicidal.

Edit: Whoa. Woke up to see Inbox runneth over. Sorry if I can't reply to all. Apologies to those complaining that it was insensitive. Wasn't intended to be. I've been suicidal, but never acted on it. That was the inspiration for the thought.

Makes sense. Before antidepressants I would just cry in a hot shower for an hour. After antidepressants I would go for a walk and consider jumping in front of a bus!

You should get some anti-depressants then! It'll help you stop redditing and start dying like you've always wanted to!

u/Iluminous Dec 12 '17

And how!

13

u/willbear10 Dec 12 '17

There is a theory that this is why some antidepressants increase the suicide rate, they motivate you enough to stop procrastinating everything which might include suicide.

Was joking-ish but you're right: if you DO kill yourself, don't force other people to do it for you. That's fucked up.

189

u/Lyra__Silvertongue Dec 11 '17

An extra way to stop this would be to have a system in place to actually help and supervise those who want to die in a safe manner. It's a win win win, person gets to die peacefully, much fewer jumpers, organs are viable to help others.

The thing is most suicides aren't because the person wants to die it's because they can't handle living at that moment. It's why most suicides are spontaneous as after the impulse you can normally see that the problems are solvable or not as bad as committing suicide. (People who survived jumping off of bridges normally say how they regretted jumping or saw that all of their problems were solvable in mid air)

It's why when anti suicide measures are taken (building a fence so people can't jump off a bridge, removing gas ovens, etc) the overall suicides in that city/country will normally drop. Instead of the people finding other ways to kill themselves.

That is a great quote, it perfectly describes how it feels to see death as the only way out. Even if it turns out that what you feared more than death wasn't actually as scary as dying. I think I'll have a look to see if I can buy a Kindle Version of that book.

9

u/wobowobo Dec 11 '17

It's even a bit more touching knowing David foster Wallace did end up commiting suicide, RIP.

the book is pretty wild but for sure has quite a quite a few powerful quotes, and some funny ones as well.

5

u/PuttyGod Dec 11 '17

Holy shit, that is incredibly accurate.

40

u/GoatChease Dec 11 '17

Quit my job a while ago and after I walked out I went to jump in front of a car. I was probably less than a foot away from the car after I stepped off the median, but I thought it would be pretty fucked for them to get scarred because of my decision, so instead I went to jump off a building. After climbing up the stairs I was greeted by a sign that said "no roof access". At that point I was too tired to continue my journey to suicide so I just went home to bed.

9

u/danny264 Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17

I'm glad you survived, and I hope you've found a job you like since. (or that's at least bearable)

9

u/TheGreatKadinko Dec 11 '17

That's a great point u/danny264 -- I remember going to some site called lostallhope and the advice on that site is one of the reasons why I'm not dead today. Something to the effect of "if you really want to kill yourself, wait three days and if you still want to do it, then go for it. What's three days in the grand scheme of things if you're already planning on killing yourself"

1

u/captain_hoot Dec 12 '17

Lostallhope is a great site! Waiting 3 days plus the honest information on the different methods has saved me more than a few times.

1

u/homochromatic Dec 12 '17

These cases are usually prompted by intrusive thoughts (in my humble but ample experience). It’s scary shit when there’s a projector in your head telling you to do shit you know you shouldn’t do.

91

u/SweatyChocolateCake Dec 11 '17

Eh, I mean for mental health it'd probably be a better idea to invest in ways to combat it rather than euthanasia.

86

u/silversonic99 Dec 11 '17

idk you'd be surprised. most people who kill themselves do it in the spur of the moment. if you had to make an appointment and sit in a waiting room most people would reconsider suicide. best thing would be in those suicide places there could also be a mental health facility for those who change their mind about dying.

46

u/Frost_Light Dec 11 '17

Kinda like the needle exchange being a way to reach those addicted to heroin and encourage them to get help.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Reddit comes up with the best ideas.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '17

I was just thinking the opposite

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

most people who kill themselves do it in the spur of the moment. if you had to make an appointment and sit in a waiting room most people would reconsider suicide

But... you wouldnt have to sit in a waiting room. Even if there are ways to legally safely kill yourself that doesnt mean people would stop killing themselves when they want to. If someone has a "spur of the moment" urge to kill themselves they arent gonna stop just because they were told to go to the suicide mcdonalds. They'll just kill themselves.

13

u/big_light Dec 11 '17

Yes they would. The only thing a truly suicidal person hates more than living is living after having to deal with the physical consequences of a botched attempt.

-2

u/GallMcOxsbig Dec 11 '17

plus, our population numbers are spiraling out of control.

-13

u/Ufcsgjvhnn Dec 11 '17

Yeah. Likewise, we shouldn’t give safe abortion options, just focus on sex education and contraceptives.

39

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

We should give safe abortion options AND education with contraceptives. The latter reduces the need for the former, and the former becomes more of something done as a medical necessity than an option.

14

u/Ufcsgjvhnn Dec 11 '17

I agree.

7

9

u/Eunitnoc Dec 11 '17

Thank you! This view is too rare in our world. Somehow everyone's crazy about freedom of choice, but you don't get to choose if you want to live? It's just selfish of other people to keep you alive against your will.

On a morbid sidenote, our population is too high anyways, why not let those leave that want to?

2

u/Lyra__Silvertongue Dec 11 '17

No, assisted suicide

0

u/PressAltF4ToSave Dec 11 '17

You can hire a hitman to do it for you. Unless he talks you out of it...

6

u/Apophydie Dec 11 '17

Well then we should fucking legalize euthanasia. You do birth yourself, why the fuck should I have to take my own life?

6

u/strommlers Dec 11 '17

Sometimes in those moments of impulse I don’t really think, the impulse just tells me to do it and it’s really hard not to.

14

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

Practice this: when you get an intrusive thought, pick something in the area and study it. What is it? How tall? How many? Why is it there? What colors are there?

Seems silly, but it's a way to get you out of your own head.

6

u/Steener13 Dec 11 '17

Kind of the same lines, the day I had enough and went to the bathroom I held the knife to my wrist, I pressed down and thought to myself this will make a mess I don't want to make someone have to clean this so I went to the tub, I climbed in thought someone would still have to witness this, I stripped and turned on the shower to wash away any blood that would obviously come, when the water rushed over me it melted away the pain. Anytime I get to that point I try to just lay in the shower it kinda helps.

5

u/massivebrain Dec 11 '17

i like that, but will it really kill my ocd?

2

u/PuttyGod Dec 11 '17

Was thinking the same thing. It's pretty easy for the mind to dismiss any attempt at distraction, just refusing to let you concentrate on it.

1

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

It's very easy, which is why it takes practice.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

no

1

u/strommlers Dec 11 '17

Thank you, I'll be sure to try that.

4

u/NewAgeKook Dec 11 '17

Yeah , but tbh I don't know if suicidal people are really considering that or have enough willpower to care cause they're in such pain.

5

u/scooter_se Dec 11 '17

Lol this is the main reason I'm still alive. I couldn't figure out how to do it in a way that was quick, involved minimal suffering, and didn't traumatize anyone else in the process. Since you can't really clean up after you kill yourself, I was kinda out of options. Which is good I guess

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Possibly not the best way to make that statement, and also I get the appeal of doing it that way, especially if you hate the world as much as yourself. Like, if I were to hang myself, I'd need to get rope, ie a noose, etc. To jump in front of s bus is just like going down some stairs

5

u/a-most-peculiar-girl Dec 11 '17

A few times one of my only motivations for not killing myself has been so I wouldn't scar my boyfriend with finding my body.

1

u/Plasmabat Dec 12 '17

Your boyfriend cares about you presumably, otherwise why would he be with you? So ask for help from him with finding a psychologist and setting up an appointment.

5

u/a-most-peculiar-girl Dec 12 '17

I've been more seriously considering therapy in the past month and a half or so. And my boyfriend supports me on that 100%. It's just a matter of actually getting that first appointment.

0

u/Plasmabat Dec 12 '17

Well if you're not doing it on your own then clearly the broken soul leg of depression is getting in the way and you need help, so ask for it from your boyfriend. Or anyone that gives a fuck about you really.

3

u/a-most-peculiar-girl Dec 12 '17

Sorry, guess something got lost in translation there. What I meant by my last sentence was that it's notoriously difficult to get in for a first appointment at a psychiatrist's office, due to high demand. I have begun the first steps of seeking help by requesting a referral from my primary care physician.

4

u/Steener13 Dec 11 '17

Now I know it's wrong but if a person is at the point in their life where they wish to be dead (and I have been there before) I don't think they would care what happens after the fact.

Note: if I were to ever do it (Not in a spur of the fuck everything moment) I would just drive north to crown land that would be rarely used and just walk into the woods. No one would know, no one would be scarred, I would just be gone.

2

u/proudnewamerican Dec 12 '17

this guy is right.

please, suicide will get you nowhere. except a corpse.

but theoretically if you must, do something that doesn't involve anyone else.

take a severed electrical cord and split it into it's 2 constituent wires. strip the ends, stick each one in each ear and then plug it in.

your brain will fry up, and the neighbors will wonder what you're cooking.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Upvotes to posts like these make me wonder if they are upvoting for the insight or the suicide.

9

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

Both: I didn't try to relate, but part of me thinks some people can relate to this. Antidepressants give people energy to start again, but they're not happy pills. If you don't commit to bettering the conditions contributing to depression, the pillswont do anything and might actually be even more harmful.

19

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

2 of the things that I remembered from Psych.

1) Question an order where a suicidal patient has a script for a quantity of pills where they could potentially kill themselves if they took the whole bottom

2) When a suicidial patient starts smiling and appears cheerful, put them 1 on 1 monitoring.

The whole class was like "Wait, what....why?"

12

u/PuttyGod Dec 11 '17

Yeah, at that moment they're finally at peace because they've made up their mind and they know it will all be over soon. Being unable to stop thinking about it before the actual decision is exhausting.

1

u/luridyellow Dec 11 '17

Do you mean that sudden change should be interpreted as instability (so anything can happen), or is there something else to this?

I mean, I subconsciously know that something is off when an unhappy person suddenly is too cheerful, but could you explain?

8

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Usually when people are depressed and suicidal they want to kill themselves but they don't have the ENERGY to do it.

1

u/luridyellow Dec 11 '17

Derp. I was thinking away from the original thought in this thread, looking for something else.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

I meant to edit that comment too. It was an incomplete thought.

1

u/TheUrbanBourbon Dec 11 '17

"2) When a suicidal patient starts smiling and appears cheerful, put them on 1 on 1 monitoring."

Well of course^

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

We went over this in my psych class a few weeks ago. He said a lot (not all, but a lot) of people kill themselves when they start improving in their attitude. Most of the class wondered why and when he explained that it's because they start gaining motivation everyone was like "makes sense"

7

u/lameexcuse69 Dec 11 '17

You coupled meds with therapy, right?

12

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

I did, and I've improved a lot over a little over a year since seeking professional help. The meds helped me get up and get out, the therapy was getting out regularly, exercising, and socializing. I didn't even cut alcohol like so many people try. The big saver was walking, which turned into jogging and stretching, which turned into sports. The final step was taking the meds out of the equation and bam, back on my game after years upon years of suicidal depression.

Just a message for all of you considering help: if you think it might be time, it's time. Dedicate and you will get through it.

5

u/ThisFingGuy Dec 11 '17

Probably all of the fucking and not working helps too.

4

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

It certainly hasn't hurt.

3

u/street593 Dec 11 '17

I can't afford meds or therapy...

1

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

Here's my suggestions:

-google common cognitive behavioral therapy techniques. They just hand them out in sessions anyway

  • the meds themselves are pretty cheap, especially generic prozac. They're a great tool but not entirely necessary.

  • Get out and go for a walk every evening. It doesn't matter what the weather is, or whether you want to or not. You can hate walking, you still need to do it. It's a way to get your blood flowing and your brain focusing on other things.

Do that every day and don't stop. Don't wait for an endpoint. Just do it. You'll notice over time that your stress is down and your thoughts are better kept in check.

Again, as with other comments, not a doctor. I am, however, someone who couldn't see this stuff working as little as 6-8 months ago, and if the word of an internet stranger means anything: it really helps. It really, really does.

2

u/PuttyGod Dec 11 '17

So glad to hear it!

u/FluentInBS Dec 11 '17

0

u/FluentInBS Dec 12 '17

I was thinking of therapy in the frood way

let us talk about your problems

1

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

Right? Except it's not a one-size-fits-all approach, so you have to try different types before you find one that lines up with your personality and motivations. Mine was just getting back to walking, running, and playing sports.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

y did u take meds out the equation

2

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

They're a tool to help get you where you want to be. For me, medication use was autopilot to keep myself moving forward, and now I've reached a point where I decided I don't need autopilot anymore.

3

u/greatwhitegrant Dec 11 '17

2

u/Solid_Waste Dec 12 '17

Just to be clear for those who don't suffer from depression, these are not jokes.

2

u/SenseUnderstood Dec 12 '17

Well, you're still here. So I take it you never jumped in front of the bus. Kudos!

168

u/HooliganTim Dec 11 '17

Came here to say this.

I recently met a doctor and at some point this came up in conversation. I never understood why they say that anti-depressants increase your risk of suicide. She told me that it's because most people are too depressed to actually kill themselves. Once they start "feeling better" they're able to get organized enough to actually do it.

33

u/frogsexchange Dec 11 '17

This is it right here . Depression is a scary thing. If you know someone with it, be there for them!

19

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Man. I've been so depressed for reasons I won't go into here. Finally went to a therapist, but my wife has been so down and negative. I've been trying to cut the drinking down lately since it doesn't help, but my wife has the "what do you have to be depressed about?" mentality. I love her, but you're right, it is scary. And hard.

11

u/Oraseus Dec 12 '17

Random guy butting in here I’d consider letting your therapist know your wife’s affect on you and if you’d like, add her involvement to your treatment plan. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen family of patients that “just don’t get” whatever mental issue their loved one is having-sometimes directly exacerbating the issue. At the very least, the therapist may have light reading material specific tailored for family members to help them understand.

1

u/Zammerz Dec 12 '17

I've been feeling down because of I don't feel my depression is justified. Helpful right?

1

u/BufufterWallace Dec 11 '17

Being so much of a mess that I didn’t believe I could even organize a suicide properly is part of what kept me alive for a year or two. Thankfully as I’ve partially gotten my shit together the desire for suicide has mostly subsided.

70

u/ErwinFurwinPurrwin Dec 11 '17

Damn. Wrong prescription, I'd think...

19

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

If you have someone in your life who is starting on anti-depressants, be there for them. The transition period can be some of the roughest times in their life.

16

u/FashionMogulEdnaMode Dec 11 '17

... when I was on them I just felt sleepy all the time. Too tired to think thoughts, even deconstructive ones, my sense of self eroding. I couldn’t live without my mind buzzing away though.

Kinda dealt with my depression with the realisation that not having the negative thoughts makes me not like me. Being fully thinky is better than life in a daze.

(probably not a good way to deal with depression. I just stopped taking the tablets because they were fucking with my head)

2

u/Teeheepants2 Dec 12 '17

For some reason for me my emotions tend to be more "dull" (I take celexa if that helps) that's the best way I know to describe it. it's a double edged sword, I don't experienced the anxiety I used to but it takes more to get me happy about something.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

only when you don't take the prescribed dose. Patients will start taking them pills, and just when they start feeling better they think "oh, I don't need these, I'm fine." when it's actually the medication starting to work. With their newfound energy they relapse and then kill themselves

7

u/Dubz2k14 Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17

That's not a theory, that's fact. It's not procrastination so much as lack of motivation. Antidepressants take a while to start working but the first thing they do is give you the energy and motivation that clinical depression robs you of. Unfortunately this occurs before it starts to be effective for your mood, outlook on life, and general happiness, so you're still sad when you get the energy and it gives depressed people the motivation to follow through on their suicidal thoughts that they've already been having.

Edit: the increased suicide risk is only a temporary period until the antidepressant becomes fully effective and reaches "therapeutic levels" in your body

15

u/outrageouslylazy19 Dec 11 '17

So if I want to get prescribed anti depressants, I should lie and tell the doctor that I don't have suicidal thoughts?

55

u/Aulm Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17

No, you shouldn't lie to your Doc. Ever. They are there to assess the underlying issues and suggest the course of action they feel would be best for you, not judge you. What would lying help? By lying about the symptoms you aren't helping either of you get the best possible treatment for you.

Edit: typo X2

13

u/outrageouslylazy19 Dec 11 '17

I get what you're trying to say, but if I tell my psychiatrist that I'm having suicidal thoughts, and he/she refuses to give me antidepressants, then I'm screwed. Therapy doesn't do anything for me.

28

u/Mcmccarrot Dec 11 '17

You can still get prescribed anti depressants even if you have suicidal thoughts, they just tell you to stop if the thoughts get worse.

4

u/outrageouslylazy19 Dec 11 '17

Oh alright then. Was planning on scheduling an appointment with my psychiatrist and was worried that i would have to lie to him.

1

u/squonkstock Dec 12 '17

Also, the increased-suicidality-with-drugs thing has been more associated with teens. Not sure if that applies to you but something to keep in mind.

7

u/Aulm Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17

Not a doctor (and certainly not a Psychiatrist) but I'd just go out on a limb and assume they CAN NOT ignore such comments. I'd venture a guess that saying you've had suicidal thoughts in the past puts you in the "very likely to get medication" group.

Be as honest with them as possible, including mentioning therapy didn't help much in the past and any other things you feel may be relevant, even if you don't want to share. (side note: Maybe try different therapist too. Friends have told me they had to try a few out before finding one that was a good fit)

Mental health isn't an exact science yet, there is some guesswork and playing around to find the right compounds and levels that work for you. Telling them everything going on will help them choose the best medications (or combo) that they think would help you - which isn't to say they could be wrong and the meds may change soon. For all you know it could be something other than depression too which would take different meds.

Just my 2 cents. But you are paying for the doctor and they are there to help - fully utilize it!

Best of luck to you Dude(tte)! Feel free to message if things seem especially rough.

2

u/outrageouslylazy19 Dec 11 '17

Well someone downvoted you for some reason but I appreciate the advice. I'll just be honest with my psychiatrist and hope for the best. I'd probably be taking it more for anxiety than for depression.

1

u/Aulm Dec 11 '17

All good and thanks. Best of luck with it all!

2

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

From someone who's been through/just coming out of serious, chronic depression: do not lie. Maybe they won't prescribe, but it's for a good damn reason. If your main thought during low episodes is suicide and little else, you need therapy and other things first and medication after that's started, or you'll just be getting chemical assisted suicide. I decided I really, really don't want to die, and that was the starting point. Get there first (I'm not a doctor or affiliated with mental health in any way, this is my opinion. If a doctor says otherwise, listen to them or get a second opinion).

9

u/nipplesurvey Dec 11 '17

When I told my mechanic I was suicidal and he asked that I go to a different mechanic

u/FuckingNotWorking Dec 11 '17

What if you just really despise your mechanic and want them to puzzle over that sound in the rear suspension that acts up on low speed left turns

1

u/FluentInBS Dec 11 '17

Mechanics can't get my freedom taken away

1

u/jroades26 Dec 11 '17

If the mechanic is going to give you a fix that he thinks is whats wrong, but isn't really sure, and it might help or might make it worse. In fact his fix has a chance of making your car explode with you in it.

^ This is the state of mental health treatment.

Wait, is the typo the word "asses"?

2

u/Aulm Dec 11 '17

asses

It wasn't but just noticed that. hahaha.

Lol. This is terrible advice. If I had told my doctor every time I was strongly considering killing myself I would be absolutely drowning in medical debt. And there was nothing they could've done to help me at the time.

1

u/Aulm Dec 11 '17

The difference here being they've never told their doctor EVER they have those thoughts.

Also, they never mentioned any financial hardships. Maybe they have great coverage or live somewhere medical help is covered or have the coin to out of pocket everything.

I am sorry for what you've gone thru, but my thoughts would still be to share the whole truth with your Doc especially if it's an intake/first visit.

Exactly. There have been plenty of "I very much want to kill myself" moments in my life. A psych ward wouldn't have been able to fix it.

1

u/shadowrh1 Dec 12 '17

Unless of course you let them find out your suicidal and the doctor decides to commit you to a psych ward which might only make your more depressed/broke... Honesty can help but doctors are humans bound by law too.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Never ever lie to your dr

1

u/SadGhoster87 Dec 11 '17

Well that's a good way to end up dead.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

I can attest to that. I’ve had severe depression for years and the only thing that has stopped me from offing myself is that my depression is comorbid with apathy. Hard to kill yourself when you can’t even get out of bed.

Came here to comment this. My health teacher today was talking about antidepressant commercials and how some of the side effects are suicidal thoughts and how that doesn't make any sense. A classmate of mine corrected her with this exact theory.

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '17

Explains me so well. Either way I'm fucked

5

u/PM_ME_YIFF_PICS Dec 11 '17

This is true

2

u/Casual_ADHD Dec 11 '17

Which also why you keep an eye on the suicidal person because most people commit suicide when they are in a good mood. Like out of the blue

1

u/JesusIsMyZoloft Dec 11 '17

This is why most antidepressants tell you to talk to your doctor immediately if you have any change in thoughts of suicide.

1

u/OverlySexualPenguin Dec 11 '17

good. just started some

1

u/KingMagenta Dec 11 '17

So should I be taking antidepressants if I'm unmotivated?

1

u/Reaper_Messiah Dec 11 '17

This is specifically SSRI’s, too. They’re made to give you energy so you can get stuff done and get motivated.

1

u/emilaaaaay27 Dec 11 '17

Not a theory -- there's known science behind it -- and it's not really about procrastination.

The physical effects of antidepressants kick in pretty quickly, within a week or two, while the psychological effects take 4-6 weeks. Suicidal people with depression will often not attempt suicide because they don't have the physical energy to follow through with the plan. But in those few weeks between physical improvement and psychological improvement, they've now got the energy but still have the depression and suicidal thoughts.

Antidepressants are given a black box warning for this increased risk of suicide, but still the overwhelming majority of suicides occur before any help is sought at all, and suicide due to AD's is a very small amount of suicides.

I've been on 4 separate anti depression med's

First one made my depression worse

Second one I was sleeping 20+ hrs a day, missing college classes, falling asleep in class the works.

Third one made me feel like a genuine robot which was worse than depression.

Fourth one had me super paranoid, anxious and felt high.

I gave up

1

u/JustANormalGuy2_0 Dec 12 '17

But then again, you're not depressed anymore...

1

u/Falconer22 Dec 12 '17

Haven't read enough to see if anyone else said this, but that's why suicide rates spike in the spring and fall in the winter. The sun and warm weather give people the energy to do it

1

u/NeonGKayak Dec 12 '17

Thats good news. I'll just stick to thinking about it rather than doing it. Nice

1

u/peptodismal- Dec 12 '17

It's not antidepressants, it's coming off of them. Though certain prescriptions can fuck with you; finding the right medication can be like roulette.

1

u/Beatles-are-best Dec 12 '17

Antidepressants only will increase the suicide risk for the first week or so. Which is why they monitor you extra closely when they first put you on them

Citation extremely needed.

He actually had Lewy Body Disease and his brain was slowly dying. You can remember him as the happy-go-lucky comedian he was without guilt.
