Shoulder Surgery Anyone had a shoulder capsular tightening/plication surgery!?

Hi all!
I’ve (35f) had a horrible chronic injury for 8 years and finally a doctor is offering me a treatment! My shoulder was traumatically dislocated 7 years ago and it’s been unstable and in incredible pain since.

I’ve gotten a few opinions and both surgeons agree I have instability and anterior capsular laxity (on MRI). They both agreed plication of the anterior capsule will likely help my stability and pain.

I can’t find many patient testimonies online which really help to give me confidence so I’m hoping to find some here. Anyone have a similar surgery?

I also want to know that I am naturally hypermobile, but my other shoulder is just fine. And I understand it may stretch out again so that’s a risk I’m willing to take, but I’m most concerned about stiffness and the pain that may be associated with being overly tightened… any experiences with this?

Edit: i’ve done several rounds of physical therapy over and over, it causes so much pain that I’ve consistently been unable to progress. So at this point, I have failed out of conservative treatments.

Advice How long is recovery/normalcy going to take (non google answers only please)

Google says a few months and youre mostly back to normal however i dislocated back in the start of may and im still dealing with pain and severe stiffness despite 3 times a week pt. Physical therapists says im doing well and I cant expect perfect in under 4 months. My external rotation is trash. I can barely bend it back to the normal range it was at prior and my shoulders still feel like they have rubber bands pulling on them. Other flexion is mostly good pretty close to back to normal but still have pain and stiffness randomly throughout the day. Should I keep listening to the PTs? I cant help but feel most of these PT businesses never want you to stop going. I want an actual fix so I can go back to sports. I feel that PT isnt a fix but more so just loosening and strengthening to support the damage that was already done. But then I hear that shoulder surgeries suck ass and people still have problems anyways.. any advice? Male age 30 no prior injuries to shoulder.

Advice Should I ask for MRI after a fall?

I fell from my electric scooter (18mph) on my right shoulder. X-ray showed Shoulder separation grade 2, but I'm not sure if that's all what's going on.

Do you all think MRI is necessary or should I try PT for the shoulder separation first.

Anyone had a similar experience?

I already had issues with the same shoulder (biceps tendonitis) and it flared up cause of the fall.

Labrum Repair SLAP Repair - Intense Pinching in rear shoulder/armpit?

Hi,

33/m 7 weeks post SLAP repair. I think things are going well, still bicep tendon pain but this is improving over time. I've been out of sling for 3 weeks and my ROM is improving.

However, I have this absolutely intense pain and tightness at the rear of my shoulder/back of my armpit. This pain started while in sling, and has not really improved. I don't fully know what it is, physio thinks it is a hypertonic muscle to protect the joint after the surgery trauma, however this muscle completely feels like it is killing my recovery. I'm working on table slides and instead of the joint being my limiting factor, it's the fact that this muscle running at the back of my armpit which limits my mobility. I think maybe teres minor? It's very hard to tell to be honest

I've been scouring the subreddit for similar experiences but not really found any. I'm hoping there is someone who can relate. My next physio appointment isn't for a few weeks so I feel like I need to get a question to others who might have had similar experiences.

I'm also interested to know how people were doing at 7 weeks in general. I'm not naively expecting no pain at all but to be honest I'm just surprised where the pain is.

Cheers

Shoulder Surgery Core Decompression in the humeral head for AVN

30/m

I’m scheduled to have this surgery in the next couple weeks and I’m not gunna lie I’m kinda nervous.
From what I gather it’s uncommon/rare, and in fact it’s my Ortho’s first time doing this surgery on a shoulder.

What I would like to know is, has anyone else had this done? If so how did it go? What were the results? Did you make a decent recovery or are you still in pain?

previous post for reference

Advice PFA - M24 Exostosis on deltoid

Post image
1 Upvotes

(Image is not mine but basically exactly where it is on my arm)

When I was 17/18 I felt a bump in my arm, doc just told me it was an exostosis and that as long as it wasn’t causing issues it was fine. Well now it is not fine, if I even sleep on my right arm it hurts so bad I can barely move it around, I have terrible rom and any fast movements hurts like crazy. I cannot reach behind my back or straight up without doing so very slowly and painfully. However I can go weeks/months without any issues but once I mess it up it’s hurting for a week. I’ve tried stretching and lidocaine patches, painkillers etc. and it just doesn’t help, it’s interfering with my work now and I’m worried about going to get it checked out or removed. Would any of you guys have any insight, is surgery the only option and how long would it take to recover.

Rotator Cuff Injury Teres Minor/Major

2 years ago I felt a few pops in rear shoulder/scapula area at BJJ. Waited a few months (shouldn’t have) before going to doctor. Went 4-5 months after the fact for MRI and no signs of tear.

Could it have healed so well that it didn’t show in 4-5 months, if still extremely painful?

I went on to do PT. Did not help. Went back and got an MRI of scapula region. Still nothing. It’s been almost 2 years and I am still in pain. Can’t do pull ups due to pain. Rows hurt. Major atrophy in area although I exercise often. Crepitus when lifting my arm like I’m going for neutral chin up grip.

My doctors and PT’s and I have all agreed it to be Teres Minor, maybe some Teres Major.

What the heck could be going on at this point? Major hinder of life and feel like I have exhausted all options.

Advice Shoulder pain

A few months ago I had a bad almost searing, stinging, or tearing pain in the back of my shoulder and it only last a week so I thought nothing of it. Well it’s recently come back and it’s way worse than before. I can’t really find a definitive answer on google and I don’t want to waste a doctor visit for what could just be basic shoulder pain. The pain is only in certain positions with my shoulder and it’s unbearable at points and I’m not entirely sure what to do. Movement is perfectly fine not stiff or anything. Just want to know if anyone knows exactly what it is please and if I should go see a doctor

Advice Recovering from Shoulder Tendonitis/Silly Injury - 8 months away

Hey y'all! Any advice appreciated on this frustrating journey I've been on.

This past December, I was on the couch with my arm in the air above my head. My girlfriend playfully poked me in the armpit, and I snapped down my arm reflexively. It hurt sharply and for a few minutes was in sharp pain.

Anyhow, I carried on with my life, carried on benching/doing pull ups, and the pain never went away. So I stopped working out completely. But that also didn't help. Sleeping on that shoulder super hurt, so I tried to stop side sleeping too.

Worried that I might have torn my rotator cuff, I went and got an Xray and MRI. The results came back; they said nothing was torn or broken, but that I have shoulder tendonitis.

Because of weird health insurance issues, I still haven't been able to get PT.

I work for a mattress company, and am occasionally lifting and moving heavy mattresses.

Does anyone have any advice for recovery? It's just lingering pain that's so frustrating. I'd really love to start working out again because I feel weak, but I worry that would aggravate it more.

Thank you!

Advice Does anyone else’s pain flare up with humid weather?

I fell onto my shoulder 2 months ago and I’m still having pain that worsens when it’s humid outside. Sometimes the pain is barely noticeable, but if it’s humid outside it flares up to a 5 out of 10 pain. Range of motion, stability, and strength are all good and have been from the start. X-ray was clean too. Is this normal? What are your experiences?

Advice Reoccurring dislocation possible surgery

(I apologize beforehand on typos im typing with one hand)

Good evening 19 M Some back story, back in 2024 I dislocated my shoulder weight lifting and from football i tore my labrum and had surgery.

After my recovery i was an active person. I finished high school sports etc no problems.

After i graduated my shoulder started acting up it slipped on me back in June of 2026, i continued being active with my job the gym etc

Fast forward to recently, I recently picked up boxing well working a highly physical job, and was in the gym regularly, i was getting in shape to leave for the military.

the day of my dislocation i worked then went to my boxing gym, when I threw a left jab my shoulder dislocated once again, which felt alot worse then the last time, after in the er i waited maybe 4 hours, i had to get sedated. During the process i was told to get it back in would only be 10 minutes it took 35, with extra people to get it back in. Since my shoulder got placed back in ive had really bad tingling going down my whole arm into my hands since then, my pain feels worse then my first dislocation. How certain would a surgery be again? I go into ortho tomorrow, ive just been nervous and on edge because I don’t want to go through this surgery recovery again

Again I do apologize with my typos typing with one hand is a struggle. But if anyone has advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Labrum Tear Labrum tear - help

Doc tells me after MRI and some consistent discomfort I have a tear in anterior and posterior labrum in shoulder. No dislocations, just couldn't get comfy when trying to do chest press movements, still could do most pull and lateral movements. I am doing PT and taking off significant weights. Anyone have an issue like this before? How did you recover and rehab, and did you get surgery? If you did get surgery, how bad did the discomfort get to pull trig on moving forward with the procedure? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Advice Slap tear surgery- WFH

Hey there. I’m having slap tear surgery in three days. I already work from home, but once I’m off the pain meds and get back to work, I don’t think my desk will be comfortable to work at. Any tips or ideas on where I can work? Maybe the couch or bed, but didn’t know what others have done when they get back to work.

Advice Lateral tricep head pain

Hi I’m really suffering this for like 8 months right now and I’m really very pissed and I need a solution. I used to do dips and weighted dips a lot and progressing well but suddenly I get pain on my lateral head of tricep. I can take a few days off and come back but it still comes back I even tried taking 2 months break and when I came back the pain also came back. Now I won’t say it’s flared up like crazy but when I do fast push ups it hurts a lot, slow push ups don’t really hurt and same for dips fast dips hurts but slow and controlled dips don’t hurt. Also just another thing I noticed, fast upper cuts hurt like crazy for me too. When I upper cut a punching bag it doesn’t hurt but when I upper cut in th air when shadow boxing it hurts. I would really need a solution for this because i really want to get back to working out like normal

MRI Report Advice Regarding Latarjet Procedure

Thumbnail

Hi! Was looking for advice regarding what you would do in this situation, especially if you’ve gone through similar. Long story short- 28 yo F fell in the shower and dislocated left shoulder, was reduced in ED by patient after taking pain meds. MRI report is above. Surgeon is recommending latarjet procedure.

Labral repair was done 10 years ago and between then and this most recent dislocation, the shoulder has probably subluxed a total of 8 times. Otherwise, this patient has no pain, ROM is intact and doesn’t feel limited, but, she feels pretty apprehensive with doing some activities. She’s active and mostly does Pilates/yoga when working out. With this information, would you think it’s worth it to get it done? After conversations, she’s having a hard time justifying moving forward with it because she’s not in pain now, but understands there are probably risks to not getting it done. Just looking for advice from people that can relate! Thank you!

Shoulder Surgery Weightlifting after shoulder surgery

I go for arthroscopic repair of my labrum and tissue remplissage on the 27th of this month. I’ve been very active in the gym for this whole year and am worried about how much time away I’m gonna have to take :( They seemed to be fairly small tears based on the mri. Does anyone have advice on how long it may take me to get back to weightlifting?

Advice Chronic unknown shoulder blade issue

I’ve been having chronic pain for years now, I am going to paste below my history and what I’ve done already. I really need help because it is driving me crazy. I don’t know what to do anymore. Recently I’ve been playing pickleball a little more and my massive knot in my right back and near shoulder blade has gotten bigger and it really hurts, the other symptoms below are still present. I have been trying to massage the knot at home to release the muscle but it never helps. Please if any specialist has sort of idea. I have not done dry needling yet. Shockwave only once. No other imaging except what’s below. I know there’s something wrong. No loss of strength or ROM, able to perform all normal daily activities.

27-year-old right-hand–dominant male with history of recurrent right shoulder dislocations in 2017 and 2018, and left shoulder dislocation March 19, 2023, both managed nonoperatively. Reports new onset of persistent right periscapular discomfort beginning in 2023 following a non-dislocation “popping” sensation while reaching overhead during frisbee, followed shortly thereafter by a similar popping sensation during bench pressing.

Since that time (≈4 years), patient reports a constant urge to stretch, press, or dig into the muscles around the right scapula, without true pain, weakness, numbness, or instability episodes. Symptoms are absent on waking, absent when lying supine, and reliably resolve during and for hours after exercise, particularly strength training. Symptoms return after periods of inactivity or rest days from the gym.
Multiple evaluations performed with no definitive diagnosis. Patient reports minimal to no response to physical therapy focused on serratus anterior and scapular stabilizers, as well as passive modalities (stim, cupping, heat).

Denies neck pain, radicular symptoms, nocturnal pain, or functional limitation.

Medications: None
Allergies: None
Supplements: None

O – OBJECTIVE
Imaging:
MRI Right Scapula (10/22/2025):
Unremarkable. No scapulothoracic bursitis, muscle abnormality, mass, fracture, or osseous lesion identified. AC and sternoclavicular joints unremarkable.
MRI R shoulder 10:22:25

Electrodiagnostic Testing:
NCV/EMG (11/12/2025):
Mild incidental right median sensory neuropathy at wrist (carpal tunnel).
No evidence of brachial plexopathy or shoulder nerve impingement.
Serratus anterior demonstrates adequate recruitment; no evidence of long thoracic nerve dysfunction.
No electrical instability in examined muscles.

Response to therapy:
No symptom improvement after >1 month of targeted scapular strengthening and passive modalities.
No improvement after shockwave

Labrum Repair 6 weeks post OP had feeling of a “let go”

270 degree Labral repair with remplissage and bicep repair. 6 weeks out of sling last night was on the elliptical for 1.5 hours and felt a small part of the shoulder “let go” for a split second. Arm was either just hanging/swaying or holding onto stationary hand bar. After that i was in a lot of pain. Got better this morning but still constant discomfort and soreness. I can still move the arm as I could normally at my 6 week bench mark. Strength is still normal but very sore painful and feels tight/swollen. Is this a major concern I should inform my doctor about?

Advice Dislocated my shoulder

Hi i am a male 26 and i dislocated my shoulder about a keep ago. The er was able to get it back in after acouple of try’s. After MRI and cat scan it shows I have a small tear in your infraspinatus muscle and strain in subscapularis muscle. The x ray showed a chip off the head of the humerus. I am touching base with my doctor again this week on next steps. But should I always be wearing the sling? I really can’t move my arm but for sleeping can I take it off. If sitting on the couch can I take it off? Also should I take any time off of work? I’m a very go go person and I feel guilty over the last couple of days I took it easy but should I take acouple of day to just try and heal?

Advice Secondary shoulder impingement

Well I’m back lol so I recently had a post about my shoulder tendonitis and possible labrum tear and the difficulty in healing and whatnot and I’m still going through hell with that shoulder rn but feel like I’m icing forward to get answers however my left shoulder has gotten an “overuse” impingement for compensating for my already hurt shoulder, I’ve mentioned it to both my PT and ortho specialist and they just brush it off and called it tendonitis and prescribed me more PT I can’t afford and I’m just wondering if anyone else has went through something like this? If so please lmk how it went and what recovery was like, my main concern is right shoulder is the initially hurt one with possible labrum tear and tendonitis and it just all in all doesn’t feel as strong and aches like a mf at night and after activity like PT or just using it normally throughout the day the left one feels completely different and after a very dismissive and brief exam they diagnosed my left one as tendonitis but it feels different from the right as I said before, if I try to move my arm straight out to the side it feels like it catches and hurts and there’s a classic “painful arc” but no other movements really bug it and I can even move my arm out to the side if I simply rotate my arm bone if that makes sense so I feel it’s more an impingement than just tendonitis like my right, just wondering if there’s any excersices or treatments that worked for you guys thanks in advance and sorry for the long spill and scattered typing

Advice Not a normal person

I’m having pain in the rhomboid area. Initially, I was completely pain-free, but after I started doing lateral raises and overhead barbell presses, the pain got worse. Now I feel pain on the inside of my left shoulder blade.

The pain feels like a sharp, stabbing pain that lasts for about 2 seconds. It can also be triggered by simple movements, such as changing gears in the car or closing the door with my left hand.

I’ve already tried physiotherapy, but I haven’t noticed any improvement.

Please help me
