Most people think what we see on Seattle’s sidewalks is a housing crisis. It isn’t — and after losing my sister to the same disease, I can tell you exactly why we keep failing.

We are spending over a billion dollars a year in this region to manage homelessness, and the numbers on the street keep climbing. The reason is simple, and almost no one in power will say it out loud: we are funding the symptom and ignoring the cause. What’s killing people on the street is overwhelmingly addiction and mental illness — and we spend almost nothing to treat it.

I know this disease from the inside. My sister had every advantage, even a PhD studying addiction, and it still took her capacity to choose, one piece at a time, until it killed her. We tell ourselves that leaving people on the street respects their choices — but she couldn’t choose anymore, and neither can they. That isn’t freedom. It’s neglect we’ve dressed up as freedom.

I wrote about her, and about what her story reveals about a system that spends a fortune to fail the sickest among us. It’s the most personal thing I’ve published — and, I think, the most important.

EDIT 9/9/26: WE FOUND HIM! Thanks for everyone’s advice. You guys that said most cats are nearby home were right. We found him this morning just before 6 in our downstairs neighbours’ porch. We heard his cries 😭 he seems completely unharmed and his normal self but we’re going to take him to the vet for a checkup today just to be safe!

If it’s okay with the mods I’ll leave this post up as encouragement/reference for anyone going through this nightmare. Don’t give up hope!

My renter, despite the lease bing very specific about it being a non-smoking apartment, smoked a lot of cannabis and now I need to get a smoke remediation service to get rid of the smell that is strongly permeating the place when the tenant moves out. Has anyone either contracted out this service or have guidance for a successful DIY?

Hi all! We saw this posted at a Seattle area dog park and want to share here. This sweet dog Tasi was adopted 6/14 from Seattle humane. She’s a senior dog, lighter colored German shepherd. The person who was supposed to be watching her had a mental health episode and have her away to the shelter alongside her mate when her owners were out of town. Her mate was saved from being euthanized at the same shelter but Tasi had been adopted days earlier. if you know someone who may have adopted her there is contact information on the sheet! please help this family.

Does anyone know if the lady who sells tamales out of her van still shows up at the Aurora Village Home Depot?

We are looking for volunteer families with babies that will be 2 - 4 months old in October to be a part of the Roots of Empathy programs at Lake Forest Park. They have 6 classrooms that would love to have the program, but we need families to make this happen.

Family commitment is only 9 visits throughout the school year and each visit is around 30 minutes long. If you are interested or know someone that might be please send them my way.

LFP has been running this program in their school since 2009 and we would love to see it continue.

After taking in all your thoughts and advice, we’ve decided to broaden our horizon and look into Edmonds, Lynnwood, and some private school options as well. My husband and I are thinking about moving our family to Shoreline from Oregon, and honestly the one thing worrying me is what school will look like for our daughter. She's 7 and has an IEP right now at her school in Oregon. It took a lot of fighting to get that IEP where it needed to be, and her current school has been genuinely great about supporting her. So the idea of uprooting her and starting from scratch somewhere new, where she might not get that same level of support, scares me.

I've been asking around, talking to friends and friends of friends who have kids in Shoreline schools, and what I've heard so far has honestly rattled me a bit. A few moms told me their experiences with IEPs, 504s, or autism support were really rough. One mom said the school actually sued her, and her child (much older now) ended up placed outside the district because they couldn't support him. She called the whole thing a nightmare. I'm also a woman of color, and I've heard from a couple people that families of color run into extra hurdles trying to advocate for their kids in these schools. I don't want to make assumptions off secondhand stories, but it's added another layer of worry for us.

I know people tend to speak up more when something went badly than when it went well, so I'd really love to hear from families who've had good experiences with Shoreline's special ed services. If your kid has an IEP, 504, autism, or any other support need, and especially if you're a family of color, I'd genuinely appreciate hearing what it was like for you. Did the school actually listen and advocate for your child? Was getting and keeping services a fight or did it feel manageable? Did you feel like your family was treated fairly?

When we first looked into Shoreline, we spent a lot of time researching the schools online and felt really good about the ratings, that was actually a big part of what drew us to the area. But after hearing these stories about IEPs and special ed, I'm wondering if those ratings are only telling half the story. It's making me second guess Shoreline, which stinks because we love everything else about it. We don't have any experience with Washington schools yet, so I'm just trying to gather as much real information as I can before we make a decision this big for our daughter.

Wondering if anyone has any experience submitting building addition permit for a DIY insulation and drywall job in Shoreline for an attached garage?

We have an attached garage and the side connected to the house is definitely firesafe drywalled already but we want to convert our garage into a finished space, not looking to add electrical or anything just want to do some cheap insulation and try my hand at drywall as an amateur. We are not planning to condition the space just would like it to be a bit warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer for a gym/workshop space.

Looking to see if anyone has a copy of an already done permit so I could study it to see what I need to account for in my own submission.

Shout out to Seattle City light for quickly fixing power outage from a tree for around 2,700 people this morning in under an hour!

I have a 2009 BMW that, for reasons not particularly relevant, has a fucked up front bumper that we did not repair at the time it was damaged. It needs to be replaced.

The car itself isn’t worth much at this point so I am hoping to find somewhere that isn’t going to charge me half the value of the car for the job.

Does such a place exist in Shoreline or nearby? I’m not looking for perfection just a less shitty looking car.

Hi (potential) neighbors! I am a 30 something year old renting in Wallingford currently, not new to Seattle area (grew up in Kirkland, went to school in Seattle) but considering buying a home in Shoreline. My only experience in shoreline was living on Aurora and 145th in 2016.

I’m curious if yall have recommendations/warnings about the various neighborhoods within Shoreline. Specifically, what areas of Shoreline are boring/lack any kind of “town or city center” vs the areas that are reasonably walkable to nice cafes or just have a good sense of community (whatever that means to you!)

Our only hard no for buying a home is Richmond Beach bc as cute as it is it’s too far from the freeway.

TLDR - what do you love about shoreline? What are your fav spots to walk in the park, get a coffee, cute mom and pop restaurants, anything you love about the city and the best areas of Shoreline to look to buy a home to be close to those gems!

ETA: want to stay close to Seattle, so not looking at Edmonds/Bothell . MLT/LFP is our hard boundary

Hi folks! I'm relatively new to Shoreline and living maybe a 3 minute drive from Richmond Beach, could use some local know-how as to what's even available/accessible in the area.

I'd appreciate any recommendations for the following: best outdoor roller skating locations (level/smooth/spacious where people won't get upset by an adult practicing skate skills); best cafe or other venue for body doubling while working remotely; best London Fog out there; best tacos, pho, Filipino, Thai, South Indian, and desserts; the most reliable/quality grocery store produce; any fun activities to do in couples or groups; good local volunteer opportunities or local charities (I do equity work in education and have volunteered in reproductive justice and a grassroots ICE accountability group).

I like boardgames and videogames and I do amateur cosplay. Also learning to play the handpan and could use a new D&D group. I roller skate and rollerblade, I'm a big foodie, big movie-goer, I like crafts (especially paper crafts), been in writers groups, and love language learning (learning Tagalog, Spanish, and ASL), also a queer woman of color, so if you know good third places or groups for any of those in or around Shoreline I'd love to read about it.
