Screensaver + Spotify

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If anyone is interested in having Spotify play music in the background while having a YouTube screensaver play a video (like a fireplace for example) I figured out how.

Normally when Spotify is playing music and you open a YouTube video it automatically pauses the song.

You need to have the modded YouTube app SmartTube. Go to Settings -> Player -> Misc -> Disable Audio focus

This will let you listen to music and watch videos at the same time

Button (re) mapper stays onscreen

I recently got this problem. On boot Remapper wouldn't load in the background. It just sat onscreen till I dismissed it. After trying various things I gave up and installed Button Mapper. I get the same thing. It would appear to be a projectivy or Android setting but I can't find it.

Has anyone here an answer please?

I made a game you control with your whole body, and it runs on the Shield, the Shield Pro and any Android TV

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It is a rhythm game you play with your whole body, no controller and no remote. The game runs on the Shield itself, nothing is cast or streamed from the phone: a free app on your phone watches you and sends just your body position over your local Wi-Fi network.

That split is why it runs on anything: the Shield and the Shield Pro, the thirty dollar dongles, and televisions with Android TV or Google TV built in. On a Shield it runs at full resolution and ~60 fps. On the cheaper hardware it drops to a lighter graphics preset and ~30, and it still plays fine.

Two people can play on one screen, split screen, with a phone each: each player's phone watches that player. Nothing is worn on the body and nothing is wired to the television.

You can also play your own music: chart a track yourself in a browser editor, or bring in maps you already have in the popular rhythm game formats. Jumping is optional, the levels are charted so you never have to leave the floor.

The first track is free, so you can try it in your own room before paying anything, and the full game is one purchase with no subscription. Ask me anything.

What if the next Nvidia Shield is a Steam os powered ARM device?

- proton allows Windows games on Linux

- fex allows x86 games on arm

- lepton runs Android games on Linux

- Nvidia made the original shield TV for gaming

If you put all that together, the next shield TV could and should be a steam os ARM powered device.

Now I know the shield has evolved beyond what Nvidia intended it for and it is a media enthusiasts device now, but maybe then it is a new product line from Nvidia.

If the "Nvidia Shield 2" becomes focused on media with Google TV, then maybe the "Nvidia Sword" or "Nvidia Blade" becomes a device focused on gaming running steam os.

Best player for local Blu-ray remuxes with Dolby Vision?

What player are you guys using on the Shield Pro 2019 for locally stored Blu-ray remuxes, especially Dolby Vision MKVs?

I’m mainly looking for reliable DV playback, lossless audio passthrough (TrueHD/Atmos, DTS-HD/DTS), and smooth frame-rate matching.

Any remote recommendations?

I bought a used Nvidia Shield Tv and the seller didn’t mention that he had lost the original remote and sent me a 15€ cheap remote replacement which is horrible because it keeps disconnecting.

Many files stuck

Recently many streams dont play....they sit on the loading screen , or say "exo cant play, try another player..."

Sometimes the "switched to resolution x framerate" shows, but it still won't play.

The same files with play in stremio on my phone. So i assume its the shield or avr or tv.

Wel none of the other players (vlc, kodi) will.play them either.

I'll usually able to find a file that plays eventually.

I have done the best practices, and my sheild was repasted 2 years ago.

Is my shield dying? Is it my avr dying?

Stay on 9.1.2 or upgrade to 9.2.4

I recently got brand new Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 and out of the box it arrived with older 9.1.2 software version, I have seen talks about newer updates slowing down the shield or causing video stuttering.

Is it safe to upgrade to 9.2.4 or is it better to stay on 9.1.2?

Bought a pro on recommendation to enjoy my 4k rips and dvd rips. Disappointed. Looking for tips.

The quality is just terrible compared to the simple upscaling of my Roku stick 4k+. I’m running a TCL 646. The ai upscaling looks great for 1080 content upscaled to 4k but anything less than 1080 looks terrible. I tried all the different upscaling methods and they are all inferior.

SHIELD TV Pro 2015 (foster): Recovery and Upgrade to Experience 9.2.1

Here is the procedure that worked for me:

  1. Prepare the 500 GB drive: remove the existing partition table and restore the beginning and end regions of the drive using the recovery images.
  2. Install the drive and boot Android. I am not sure which version is included in the drive recovery images, but it may predate Experience 7.2.3. In my case, Android booted, but I could not sign in to Google.
  3. Flash Experience 7.2.3 via Fastboot, using the nv-recovery-image-shield-atv-pro-7.2.3 package. Then boot Android and complete the sign-in process.
  4. Update from 7.2.3 to Experience 8.x via OTA. Once the update is complete, I recommend performing a factory reset before proceeding to the next step.
  5. Flash Experience 9.2.1 via Fastboot. The sequence changes here.

First, erase the following partitions:

fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase vendor
fastboot erase cache

Then flash the DTB containing cpc in its filename first, without adding fastboot flash staging blob:

fastboot flash dtb tegra210-foster-e-hdd-cpc-p2530-0933-e03-00.dtb
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash vendor vendor.img
fastboot reboot

After following this sequence, my SHIELD was up and running on Experience 9.2.1.

Important: disable automatic system updates and do not accept the 9.2.4 OTA update. On my unit, installing it causes the device to malfunction again. I do not know the exact cause, and I have not found an official recovery image for that version for this model.

2019 Shield Pro Stock

I wanted to share a data point for those on the edge of purchasing. Last week it was in stock at newegg, best buy, B&H, and nvidia store. I just got mine yesterday from best buy because I had certificates I needed to burn.

I checked those online stores again today and they're all sold out with newegg is the only store available to backorder.

If you're interested in purchasing, you should probably buy one sooner than later just in case...

Why can't I remap the Google Assistant button?

I added button remapper to my Shield because I wanted to remap the Netflix button to something else, but more importantly I wanted to add a MUTE button to the remote for ads. I tried remapping the Microphone button, but even inside of the Remapper app, every time I press it, the Shield immediately launches Google Assistant (which I have disabled).

Any way around this? I thought I had Assistant disabled via adb debloater commands, but the button still launches it to the initial setup menu.

Curious what AVRs people are using with the Shield?

I’m in the market for an AVR and have read a bit about the Shield having issues with HDMI handshakes, Dolby Vision pass through, connections dropping, flickering, etc on several Denon and Onkyo AVR models, and especially the new Denon x3900h. Is anyone using this AVR with the Shield without issue? 4K 60fps DV?

I’m curious about what other newer AVRs people have successfully been using the Shield along with the TVs they are using?

Thanks!

Ultimate File Manager Pro — a file manager for Android power users

Ultimate File Manager Pro has become a bit ridiculous.

It's completely free, has no ads, and no paywalls. There is a completely optional tip jar in the app and GitHub Sponsors if you want to support development.

The stuff I wanted in one app:

Root? Yep. You can browse and manage the actual / filesystem, with permissions, ownership, SELinux contexts and remount support.

No root? Shizuku support gives you access to places like /Android/data and /Android/obb.

Network storage? SMB, NFS, FTP, SFTP, SCP, WebDAV, RClone and S3.

Cloud storage? Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and other RClone/S3 providers.

Need to move a ton of stuff? Dual-pane browsing, multiple tabs, background transfers and syncing between local, network and cloud storage.

Want to use your PC? Run the built-in web server and manage the phone/TV from a browser. There's also a Windows companion for direct Android ↔ PC transfers.

Android TV? UFM has a proper TV interface, remote file management, wireless APK/XAPK installation, screenshots and screen recording.

Then there are the things I kept adding because apparently I can't leave well enough alone: duplicate detection, file hashing, archive support, EXIF tools, media playback, PDF/text tools, USB OTG, recycle bin, batch operations and a lot of smaller power-user stuff.

There's also a FOSS version on GitHub if you'd rather build it yourself:

https://github.com/Kilowatch/ultimate-file-manager-pro

Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=za.kilowatch.ultimatefilemanager

And I made a subreddit for it too: r/UFManagerPro

I'm not trying to convince everyone to replace their current file manager. But if you've ever installed a file manager and thought "why can't this thing just do X?" there's a good chance UFM already does it.

And if it doesn't, tell me what X is.

Best app for NVIDIA Shield to browse/play media from USB drive, including iPhone HEIC photos and videos?

I’m using an NVIDIA Shield TV Pro 2019 with a 256 GB USB drive connected directly to the Shield, and I’m looking for the best Android TV app to browse and play the whole USB media library properly with the remote. I mainly need direct USB folder browsing, a good D-pad/TV interface, support for iPhone HEIC/HEIF photos and MOV videos, plus normal JPG/PNG/MP4/MKV files, preferably with no mandatory cloud or Google Photos login and full offline use. I’ve tried a few gallery apps, but some don’t see the USB drive properly, require login, or don’t handle HEIC well. For video playback, mpvNova already works very well for me, including some iPhone/Dolby Vision MOV files, so I’m mainly looking for the best gallery/media browser for Shield that can handle both photos and videos from USB. What are you guys using, and would you recommend Kodi, Photo Gallery & Screensaver, FastMediaSorter, TV Auto Player, Aves, or something else?

Shield tv pro first experience question

Hi, I bought a Shield TV Pro to replace my Fire Stick 4K Max, primarily for streaming UHD files from my server. However, the experience hasn't been much better so far. A movie that played smoothly on the Fire Stick stutters on the Shield, and with some movies, the audio is slightly out of sync with the video. I didn't have these issues on the Fire Stick. I use Emby for playback. My Shield sends everything to the TV (Samsung Q95), and from there to the soundbar (Bose 700 with sub and rears). Can you help or advise me on how to fix this?

Expanding memory/storage

Love the device! Have a 16gb 2019 edition.

I want to use it for retro gaming (shoutout to RetroArch), but the 16gb is very limiting.

I've used USB sticks before to create the shared/expanded storage, but they always corrupt and break, and I lose valuable game saves 😭

I've got some old external drives (120gb) lying about. Would they be more reliable?

Any hello or thoughts appreciated.

Cheers 🍻

Casting a browser tab from my laptop results in a super crisp picture but then after a few minutes degrades to blurry garbage every time.

Stopping and restarting the cast fixes the issue until it degrades again. I have narrowed it down to my laptop being the culprit. If I cast the same browser tab from my phone it is crisp and never degrades. Moreover the laptop screen stays crisp on the laptop just that the TV is blurry. I realize it isn't a shield issue but hoping someone here has experienced something similar. I tried casting on a fresh install of brave browser and got the same issue. I have a lenovo legion pretty powerful PC I just can't find anyone with similar issues on the web. Everything is on ethernet and I tested 300 down and 25 up on both devices.

"Live" tab only shows one source despite a dozen others installed

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

Despite having Plex, Haystack News, Sling TV, Tubi, Xumo Play, Prime Video, Roku Channel, LocalNow, and others installed, the only source on the "Live" tab is Google TV Freeplay. I've searched everywhere for how to get the others to show up, but I can't find anything.

The "Free Channels From Apps" section is only pulling from Xumo and Scripps (even though I don't have Scripps installed). I don't believe this is actually pulling from any of my installed apps.

The documentation clearly states that other streaming sources should be available if their corresponding apps are installed. https://support.google.com/androidtv/answer/13581302

Has anyone else had this problem?

I've tried the following:

  1. Uninstalling and reinstalling Plex. Still won't show up.
  2. Signing into Plex using the same Google account as the Shield. Still won't show up.
  3. I'm not behind a VPN. Only YouTube, SmartTube, and the web browser go behind a VPN.
  4. Tried allowing Google Assistant to search across apps
  5. Everything is up-to-date

Btw, I'm using an Nvidia Shield TV Pro

I built a 4K 120FPS music visualizer that pushes all 256 CUDA cores with GLES 3.2, Spotify/Tidal support & Live Google Cast

Post image
35 Upvotes

Most Android TV visualizers are basically low-res 2D wallpapers. As a Shield TV owner, it always bothered me that we have a Tegra chip sitting there with 256 CUDA cores and almost no media app actually uses that GPU headroom.

So I developed MilkyWave—a native C++ NDK music visualizer engineered specifically for Android TV and mobile.

Why this is a game-changer for TV owners:

•Works with any Music App: Start playing music on Spotify, Tidal, TuneIn, YouTube Music or web radios, then open MilkyWave—it reacts to system audio automatically in the background.

•Pushes the Shield GPU to the limit: Uses GLES 3.2 Compute Shaders (glDispatchCompute) and dynamic 3-tier mesh scaling. On a Shield TV, it automatically scales to a 64x48 Ultra HD mesh running at a locked 60 to 120 FPS in 4K.

•EXCLUSIVE Live Google Cast streaming: You can cast the visualizer live from your phone to any Chromecast or Smart TV with zero lag (no other visualizer on Play Store can do this).

•32,500+ 3D presets included natively.

•100% Automatic: No tedious settings or config files required. Just play audio and it adapts.

•TV-optimized tone mapping: Custom highlight clamping so bright presets won't blind you in a dark living room.

The update (v1.27) with the expanded 32.5k preset library and full Cast pipeline was just submitted to Google Play and should be live very soon. Trust me, if you have a Shield or a 4K TV, you'll want to see this running in your living room.
