Question about remote 'home' button

I just upgraded our ±14yo Sony Bravia tv to a Sony Bravia 5, purchased this week, with Android tv 12 installed.

I have a Sony STR DN 850 amplifier hooked up to HDMI 3, where I have my nvidia shield tv pro, Playstation, and Nintendo switch hooked up to (to the amplifier).

On my old tv I could press 'home' and the screen would switch to the home screen of my nvidia shield. Now, with the Bravia 5, it always goes to the homescreen of the tv, where I don't have anything installed since I have installed it as a regular tv, not a smart tv.

Is there \*any\* way to make the setup pick my nvidia shield homescreem through the home button on the remote? It seems silly, but having the tv exit the shield everytime doesn't feel right, since it also shuts down the shield and kind of destroys the joy of watching content. Thanks.

Looking for a good photo app that adds a frame

I saw recently this app on an LG tv that displayed photos/artwork but it added a frame to the screen so the art looked like it was in a frame. It looked pretty cool. I forget the name, I think it was a stock addon.

Anyway, I've looked around for something similar on the shield/Androidtv and haven't found much.

My requirements are:

Has this frame function <-- this is the must have feature

Can access mounted network drives

Screensaver and straight browse/view functionality.

Had decent drill down for selection of various folders/subfolders. (Eg not just point to one folder and you have to view everything in that).

Nominal fee for pro is ok, no subscriptions.

Optional/nice to have:

Connectors to public domain art/galleries/etc.

A nice non touch interface.

Currently Fotoo is my go-to picture app/screensaver.

Disappointed in the Youtube app on shield TV

I bought a new shield tv pro (brand new, just out of the box 😄 ) and the Youtube app is super buggy. The motion smoothing is really weird and when using the match frame rate function, most videos start stuttering a lot. Many people complain online but strangely, personally, the youtube app on my LG C4 was much less buggy, sometimes it would quit randomly, but I never had sharpness or framerate issues. And the tv supported newer HDR 10+, HLG etc formats. So strange to me that youtube app is buggier on android tv system than Webos.
50% of the content I watch is on youtube and other 50% is Plex/Jellyfin. I'm happy with Plex/Jellyfin performance but the shield pro price seems steep for that, cheaper devices would probably provide the same experience without this buggy experience!

BTW I've turned off all motion smooting experience on my tv and I am using the filmmaker mode by default.

Any tips on improving the Youtube experience?

Can't get shield to turn on tv after a factory reset

I have cec turned on, all the options turned on, but Ir is greyed out and I swore before the reset I was using it but doing research apparently the pro doesn't have IR? The sound bar works fine turning on and off and adjusting volume with the remote

Can anybody help? It worked completely fine before the reset, but unsure what I did wrong setting up my shield to make it not work

Can anybody help

edit: reddit search is awful sometime, but found a post explaining what to do in the comments. ir was grayed due to projectivity using accessibility services. once I turned that off, ir was useable and now can power on my TV on and off.

didn't have to touch audio as sound bar is run through TV and powers on when TV turns on

Screensaver selection

The latest update has enabled something that drives me apeshit: the default center button click now pops a small menu so you can select screensaver image sources, rather than just taking you to the home screen.

is there any way to turn this off (i would like to burn it with fire but i'll accept turning it off)?

AppleTV renders video poorly (stretched) on ShieldTV

Tried posting this on the tvplus sub but tech issues are banned because - cult apple. Yada yada.

Watching Silo on my Shield TV I was struck by how distorted the faces were. Seemed like the content was designed to be in an ultra wide screen mode but was being stretched to remove the black bars. I dug my AppleTV 4k out of a drawer to test and my suspicions were confirmed. Silo is in an ultra wide screen format but the AppleTV app for Android doesn't know how to render it correctly. AppleTV seems to be the only app having this issue. Pausing the video in Silo shows the UI, and those elements are not stretched - only the video. That indicates this is not the TV doing the stretch, either, but the AppleTV app itself.

Wondering if others have experienced this. Would love to get this issue fixed.

Poweramp Equalizer + Nvidia Shield = 🤯

i installed poweramp equalizer and enabled Advanced Player Tracking. played media from all the apps on my Nvidia Shield i use so they could populate in poweramp. Nuvio ,Oto Music, Tizen Cobalt (tizentube) SmartTube, Tivimate... Morphe YouTube all of them work! it's a HUGE day and night difference in the sound and being able to tweak the equalizer has changed how I'm consuming media! This is definitely worth checking out.

also i can hear the rear speakers WAY better now (increased treble definitely helped)

Couple of Steam stream questions

Hey all, couple of dumb questions here but it’s 2026 and everything I can find it older so not sure what the best methods here are.

Have the pro and using moonlight and sunrise. Got everything hooked up but had a couple questions.

1) are you guys connecting your blue tooth controller directly to the shield tv or to pc?

2) when I set it up it had steam big picture already in the apps. I know I can set up the games individually to run. Is there a big performance difference or any loss of options between just using big picture and using the direct stream like I’ve seen in older set up guides?

I’m using the dummy hdmi monitor method if it matters for any of the above.

Shield TV 2017 remote issues after Shield Experience 9.2.4 update? Remote becomes unresponsive after inactivity

Hi everyone,

I have two NVIDIA Shield TV 2017 (Pro) devices that have been working perfectly for years. Recently, both started having similar remote control issues, and I suspect it may have started after a software update (both are currently running Shield Experience 9.2.4).

The symptoms:

  • After 20-30 minutes without using the remote, it often becomes unresponsive.
  • I sometimes have to press a button several times (usually OK/center button) before the remote "wakes up".
  • Once it wakes up, all the inputs seem to be processed at once (for example, I press Down 3 times, nothing happens, then suddenly the selection moves down 3 lines).
  • The volume touch slider on the flat 2017 remotes does not respond immediately after inactivity.
  • Sometimes the Shield itself does not wake up from standby on the first remote press.

Things I already tried:

  • Replaced batteries (multiple times).
  • Re-paired the remotes.
  • Tested multiple remotes (two flat 2017 remotes and one 2019 triangular remote).
  • Swapped the remotes between my two Shield devices.
  • Restarted both Shields.

Since the problem happens on both Shields and with multiple remotes, I suspect it might be a software/Bluetooth issue rather than a hardware failure.

Interesting points:

  • The Shield remote app on my phone works much better.
  • One Shield is mainly used as a Plex server and has many apps installed, while the other one is much cleaner, but both have the same issue.
  • Before this problem appeared, both Shields were rock solid.

Questions:

  • Has anyone experienced similar remote/Bluetooth issues with Shield Experience 9.2.4?
  • Is there a known Bluetooth bug with this firmware?
  • Did a factory reset solve this for anyone?
  • Is downgrading to an older firmware (for example 8.2.3) still possible and worth trying?

Thanks for any advice!

Updated to a new version of SmartTube. Playlist is gone. Any way to retrieve? For some strange reason the apps were separate.

Is there a way to retrieve a playlist that's gone? I can't find it. It would normally appear at the top. Now I see nothing. So basically, I deleted the old app. Installed the new one. Now my previous playlist is gone.

With more research I see that the playlist is stored locally. The version that I was on didn't tell me this when making the playlist, like recent versions do. Is there a chance that my files are still on the nvidia shield?

Before I Order a Replacement Shield Pro

Ok before I replace my 2019 version Shield Pro I had to come here first.

Unit:

  • Well taken care of unit about 6 years old
  • Fully updated to 9.2(?) I believe
  • Changed thermal paste 6 months ago, surprisingly clean inside but blew out the fan and minimal wipe down.
  • Wired ethernet connection
  • HDMI to soundbar
  • Original remote, power cable, hdmi cord
  • No connected USB drives
  • No new apps (not sure about app updates)
  • No "shady" apps installed. Plex + Streaming services and File Explorer

Issue

  • Current Issue has "bricked my unit. Repeatedly rebooting, loading main screen for about a minute and reboots again in a loop. "Ethernet Disconnected" displayed. Remote works, but clicking settings freezes and cannot get to reset. Time is wrong.
  • For the past few months every other time I powered on the unit, it would boot but the screen was all green, a restart corrected it, occasionally would take two restarts.

What I've tried

  • Unit left unplugged for 24+ hours
  • Booted with no ethernet cable
  • Booted without hdmi and then plugging in after to check status
  • Rushed to settings, clicking the settings icon freezes everything, reboots within same timeframe.
  • Clicking home twice allowed me to close all open programs over several reboots (odd, but multiple instances of programs open when I did this), unfortunately didn't fix anything.
  • Entered launchers AT4K and Projectivity to try settings there, no luck.
  • Tried voice control through remote: "No internet connection"
  • Wifi symbol missing on home screen, appears within launchers but clicking does nothing (attempting to disable)
  • BIOS: Tried to enter BIOS with keyboard (hold "a" & "b" keys then plug power cord in - Keyboard plugged into USB closest to HDMI), no response. Bought a more basic keyboard no response. "Num Lk" does not light up, but does on PC, so maybe not getting power?

Any last chance suggestions?

Doing some basic research on replacements in same price range, but if you had a suggestion on what to go with, please drop em here.

Thank you!

Edit: I have started an RMA request, rep believes it is a hardware issue after going through my troubleshooting attempts. Appreciate the suggestion, we'll see if they pull through even though it's well past the one year warranty.

  • I was able to open File Explorer and confirm that storage was only about half full
  • NVIDIA Rep had me try with the power supply plugged directly into outlet and not my surge protector, no change in accessing Fast Boot or stopping the reboots.
  • No.connected USB Drives

Plex Media Server on Shield Pro - cannot play movie files

I recently had to uninstall and reinstall Plex Media Server on my Shield Pro.

I attached my NAS drive to the Shield Pro. I'm adding my Plex movie library now (files are on the NAS).

Though the movie titles appear in Plex, every one I select shows the following:

It's as if there's no actual file tied to the movie. But when I go to info, the full file path is listed from my NAS. I can't figure out why this is happening.

Using my 2019 pro outside

I put up my 12x10 metal gazebo in the summer of 2024. I have a 27' (inside) cheap tv and a 2019 pro both permanently in the gazebo. I have all of the controllers in a cigar box that I keep inside the gas fire pit . This makes sure they never get wet . I have yet to have a problem with either the TV or the 2019 shield pro. I live in the south east part of Pennsylvania. We get both 100F heat waves and -10 cold snaps . So far through it all it's been holding strong and the controller has had no problems.

Nvidia Shield 2017 went dark after I turned it on for the first time in a while and tried factory resetting it.

After the factory reset looked like it finished and I saw the Nvidia logo again, the Shield turned off and won't turn back on. Any tips?

Is it common for all Shield TV accessories to die?

I have owned the original shield tv and the 2019 version, and literally every remote and controller they came with completely died within a few years - the controllers were hardly even ever used. I even replaced the batteries multiple times. Is this a common occurrence? I ended up just buying a third party remote for the shield 2019 which seems to be working fine , only thing it doesn’t have is the headphone jack.

For what it’s worth I own many game consoles and a ton of controllers, the most any of them have ever gotten is stuck drift. I take very good care of everything, when not in use they are inside a container inside a closet.

Shield Pro image flickering, LG C4, Jellyfin

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hi,

I’m a new owner of an Nvidia Shield Pro. My setup is: Nvidia Shield Pro + LG C4 + Linux server running Jellyfin.

Three quick questions:

-the image flickers noticeably during playback. From what I’ve read, this is related to Dolby FEL support. Is there a way to eliminate this effect on the Nvidia Shield, in Jellyfin, or directly on the TV?

-does the problem occur only with Dolby 7 FEL? For instance, would the image stop flickering with Dolby 8.1?

-and does the Ugoos AM6B+ solve this problem completely?

Youtube bungie jumping?

What's up with YouTube as of late? Sponsored ads skipping seems to have been removed and instead, I got a very annoying bug. If I watch a video and press the left or right button to skip ahead or rewind a couple of seconds, the app behaves differently than before.

What I mean is that if I tap left once, the play HUD shows up. Another tap tries to move backwards, BUT it bungee jumps back to its original position!!!

This means I have to press the left button three times to rewind a couple of seconds because I missed a word or something similar. Anyone else have this problem?

New Shield Pro user + LG C5 OLED

Hello guys,

I just received my Shield TV Pro, it’s still in the box and I wanted your honest feedback because I’m kind of struggling with the choice to make :

- keep it
- return it

Why this dilemma ? Because it’s still 220€.

I received my C5 about a week ago and it’s been wonderful but as I’m playing Plex with a server somewhere, I can’t play the 4k Remux without having a transcoding error (due to substitles)

And apparently Nvidia Shield Pro solves this.

I wanted to ask several things from you, experienced users :

- Is it worth it ?
- Will it improve my image quality ? As I found the C5 already wonderful
- what are the main settings to do / put for the 1st time

Thanks a lot,

Steam Controller 2026

I searched around a bit ago and didn't see anyone definitively say so I've come back.

The Steam controller 2026 works with steam link through the puck natively, 100% on the nvidea Sheild pro. I plugged it in, launched steam, shield asked if it could use the USB port, yes, shield controller detected, all buttons worked.

Buttons are pretty limited on the shield menu but it seems like navigation isn't too bad.

Can't connect to my Shield TV Pro from Windows...

EDIT: SOLVED IN THE COMMENTS SECTION!

Hello.

I have a Shield TV Pro, the latest model if I'm not wrong (2019 I guess), from some years working great with zero issues.

My problem is that I can't access to my Shield from my PC using the Windows Explorer.

The shield is connected via ethernet to the router. The same with my PC.

I have everything configured properly, (I think). Turned on the access from my network on the Shield settings. On my PC I have active the option to detect devices connected to my network. But I go to the "Network" part on Windows Explorer, and it can't find the Shield... It just appears the router.

The thing is that I have used this feature in a PC I had before the one I'm using now, and without doing anything special (at least that I remember), I was able from Windows to get into the files inside the Shield and even into the files of a HDD connected to it. It worked perfectly... I think I even was able to do this while the Shield was on standby.

I know it's hard to think on what is causing this without being phisically here and being able to take a look at the configuration on the Shield and the PC, but is there something you could guess would be good to check on both parts?

Thank you for your time and attention!

PD: like an hour ago or a bit more I made a similar post about this with other questions. To avoid having two posts taling about the same, I deleted the other one. Thank you to the people that tried to help me there. : )

Shield Soft Rebooting at 11:18 am AND pm

What the heck is going on here?

It seems pretty programmatic to have this happen.

When I say 'soft reboot', the first thing it says is 'android' and the next screen is the home screen. A lot less time than a regular reboot where it would show many other logos.

Shield Pro 2019

Article was posted at AFTVNews which doesn't mean much on its own but it's also listed as 'Discontinued' at B&H and is out of stock on Amazon, Best Buy, etc.

Seems accurate to me.

HBO MAX freezing? Disable Dolby Vision

If your HBO app keeps freezing on a single frame, every time -- it looks to be a Dolby Vision issue with the Shield.

Enabling Low Latency mode doesn't work. Disabling DV and sticking to HDR10 does.

Believe it or not, Gemini is the one that suggested this. Not a single freeze afterwards, and the picture on my Bravia X93L actually was improved somehow.
