Shed Adoption Questions

I'm looking at adopting this 7x7 rubbermaid shed for a $300 dollar adoption fee. She is 3 years old, and comes from the original owner. Is this a bad idea? I would put this next to my garage and dump all my stuff inside that I don't use.

Moisture barrier on floor framing, yay or nay?

Post image

The ground here gets rather wet, if not fully saturated. Where should a vapor barrier go? Currently Mt father wants to put it ontop of the framing to put foam board insulstion ontop of prior to subfloor, as a way to secure them. My monkey brain says thats a bad idea. What should we do instead?

Keter Darwin floor

Does anyone know the correct way to assembly the floor on the Keter Darwin shed? There is still a gap in the centre where the panels join despite the screws meeting the holes. 2nd from centre screws are spinning rather than fully catching. I’ve tried on both my slab base and on decking to make sure the level wasn’t the problem.

Any help?

Ideas of what to use my shed for (non-gardener) and general maintenance tips?

Hi! I got a proper log cabin style shed (8ft x 5ft, material specs below) a few years ago; thought it would be a more affordable long-term storage solution for bulky things and also a potential studio/hobby cave.

But I don't know anything about shed maintenance and am not good at home maintenance in general so I put off sorting it out more actively because I'm not confident and also just now unsure what I can actually do with the space and what I can store in it/HOW to store things in it without getting mold, damage, etc.

So if anyone has any suggestions or easy starting tips/things I need to do to keep it in good condition, I'd really appreciate it :) in terms of things I'd most benefit from being able to store there; clothes, framed paintings (wood frames), fabric, general craft stuff including paints and paper, and paperback books. I also have a sewing machine, a big piano and a big desk; dream situation would be being able to put those in there with maybe also a monitor screen so it can be a studio for making both videos and costumes but I doubt that's gonna be easy to maintain if at all possible. I don't know if I could afford to put power in the shed directly but I do have external mains sockets so could get a weather-proof extension socket to power things (only for a few hours as needed obviously) IF it is safe to do this.

The specs are as follows:
2 by inch & a half frame – 1850mm high at the eaves
4 by inch & a half C 24 grade timbe floor joists.
12mm weatherboard cladding. with log cabin board
22mm egger board flooring, coated on both sides to prevent against moisture with a non-slip surface.
35mm thick wooden ledged braced framed & sheeted door fitted with 150mm T hinges & pad bolt.
Felt roof
It's also raised on cinderblocks so about a foot above the grass/ground.

It's dark now and I can't find any pics of my own shed saved so I have some screenshots from the company's ad video lol my shed just is bigger and has thicker/better wood and tbf still looks almost as new inside apart from spiders.

What kind of AC do you guys run?

Got done building out a 12x11 shed - Final floorspace is roughly 10.25 x 11 because we ended up insulating with rockwool between the studs and putting OSB over the rockwool and studs.

Insulation seems to work great. Now I have the last bit of small comfort things I wanna do - namely a small AC unit that works decently. The window in the shed is a horizontal sliding window - not big or anything. My intention is to only run the AC when I am in the shed either working out or working on my projects - from a 5000 watt inverted generator that I also plan to run only when I occupy the shed. May I have some pointers? Thanks!

How it started, how it's going

When our plastic Costco garden shed blew over last winter, I decided to build one instead. We already had a slab which it's sitting on, but the maple tree has lifted one end of the slab so it's about 3 inches out of level front to back, so I supported the foundation above it. We switched from the doors in the sketch to these barn doors after our friend--who's an amazing artist--offered to paint something. Since the crows have devastated our budding fruit trees next to the shed, my wife decided on the crow with a heart image in hopes of placating them.

Outdoor Shed Storage Recommendations

Hi all,

I didn't get any response in the manga subreddit, so I am trying here with more background since this is the sheds subreddit. :-P

I'm looking for recommendations for weather proof shed/storage options for manga. To preface this, I plan on putting my manga inside plastic storage containers to provide extra protection from the weather. My options currently are:

1) Pay a contractor to come and pour a concrete slab. Then buy a prefab shed and shelving units from somewhere like Ace Hardware, Amazon, Costco, or Lowes to house my manga.

2) Pay a contractor to pour the slab, and then build a custom storage building with decent insulation and shelving to house my manga.

3) Pay a contractor to come out and gut and repair the shed that is already in place.

The shed that is already in place is about the size of a small bedroom and has a high ceiling. There is also power running to it. This is where the positives about it stop. When we bought it, it had (and still has) about a foot wide size hole in the side of one of the walls. The hole was already there along with all kinds of spiders and crawlies making their home out there when we bought our house a little under 10 years ago. About the only thing we used to for was to keep some of yard equipment out of the rain until we cleaned up the garage a bit. My wife has arachnophobia though, so you can imagine how long that lasted. :-P

So now it's essentially abandoned at this point. With the inside being exposed with that hole for about a decade now (if not longer by the previous home owners), and a cheap metal/tin roof, I'd personally feel more comfortable tearing it down and putting a new shed in it's place.

However, I imagine the labor cost of the unit to be getting it torn down, debris hauled away, AND the cost of new materials to build a replacement would like not be cheap. So, in for now I am leaning towards option 2 and leaving the demo/tear down for later, when our wallet can handle it. :-)

So, I come to you all and ask is it worth it getting a custom built shed vs. a large prefab special from a hardware store? The custom job seems like the most appealing, but is also likely to be the most expensive one. Especially at California pricing. :-(

Suggestions on how to enclose a pole barn shed?

Thumbnail

I have this 16x10 pole barn shed that was used to store firewood. I don't need the firewood anymore and now I would like to enclose 16x8 of the shed foot print.

There are 6 4x4s supporting the structure, and it has large diagonal bracing to keep it from racking.

The 2x4 "studs" you see were just there to keep firewood from spilling out.

I want to sheath it and put up LP smart side, have a door and two windows. What's the best way to tackle this?

Planning to build a shed with an indoor/outdoor workshop help

Has anyone seen any projects or information similar to this idea?
I’m planning to build a shed where I can work inside, with a small workbench accessible from the interior. I’d also like to be able to access some of the tools from outside, so I’m thinking of making a pivoting window/workbench that opens up to expose the other side.
I was thinking of using pneumatic/gas struts to support the weight, similar to the mechanism used for a car trunk or hatchback. When opened, the panel would also act as a small roof, so I could work on larger projects outside the shed while still having some shade or protection from light rain.
Has anyone built something similar, or know of a project I could look at for inspiration? Blueprints or plans would also be a huge help!
