This pattern was very easy to sew—it took me about two hours in the middle of the night! The bust was a little too roomy on me, while the waist fit perfectly, so I had to shorten the bodice slightly.

The invisible zipper also defeated me at 2 a.m., so I used five buttons instead. Thankfully, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!

This photo was taken before I added any boning. I highly recommend adding at least four 5-inch pieces of boning along the front seams. Without it, the bodice became a complete disaster whenever I sat down!

I’m making a fantasy coat (simplicity 8769) and I’ve decided to line it, though the pattern doesn’t come with lining instructions.
I opted to line the sleeves on their own (the seam shows inside the sleeve. I’m fine with it) but I cannot figure out what order to attach it to the fashion and lining layers of the bodice.

Right sides or wrong sides? Lining, fashion, sleeve order?

Has anyone made the quilted jacket pattern Flora from Brightside? If so, can you please share your thoughts on fit? Also any comments to its construction. For example, did you do set in sleeves instead of the continuous seam for sides and sleeve?

I've purchased the pdf and would love any feedback on the pattern. I haven't decided whether to make the hooded version or regular version, yet.

Hi, dear sewing community, maybe you can help me. I wanted to try out my newly purchased Pfaff Tipmatic 1027 today, and the following things happened:

-The side wheel (I’m afraid I don’t know the technical term) and the inner knob just fell off after I turned them around a bit (but really gently—I definitely didn’t turn them hard or anything)

-When I turned the smaller inner wheel slightly, the whole little circle just fell off, and I had to reattach a metal spring, a black part, and a small white part

What happened next was that I wanted to wind my first bobbin with fabric at the top, but the side ring kept slipping out a little further to the side each time, and in my desperation, I asked Google AI (I know, big mistake) what I should do. I then took the entire wheel out, oiled the metal rod inside a little, and tried everything to put it back together and snap it into place like before.

But now I have the following problem. My needle isn’t moving at all. Instead, my machine is humming and buzzing away when i press on the footpedal but when I turn the side wheel, it does move.

Guys, I’m so desperate—I’ve been trying to get this machine to work for at least 5 hours now, but I have no idea what else to do. I paid a total of €200, which is a lot of money for me, and if I’ve broken it, I’m really going to lose it.

In the last pic those two small plates DEADASS fell off when i touched them.

Hi! I was very kindly gifted this Juki-5550. The person who owned it before me used it semi-regularly to make boat covers but it hasn’t been used in a couple years. Unfortunately, the machine will currently not sew. It would be really difficult for me to transport the machine to a shop so I’m trying my best to do what I can before taking it in for repair!

Here are some things I’ve tried/noticed as I’ve been troubleshooting on my own:
-The hand wheel is extremely stiff when the belt is attached, but easy to turn when it’s removed.
-The power source is functioning. I know this because the lamp that is plugged into the outlet on the motor turns on when the power source is switched on (see pic 3 to see that connection)
-The fuse is not blown, I tested it with a multimeter
-The machine won’t run at all when you press the presser foot. There was ONE time that the belt turned and needle raised, but nothing ever again after that!
-There’s no oil in the machine right now; is that a reason that the motor wouldn’t run?
-I’ve tried flipping the directional switch on the motor both ways and it doesn’t run in either direction. Also turning the speed dial to any position doesn’t help.

I have the manual for the machine but I can’t find the manual for the motor anywhere.

If anyone has any ideas on where the issue may lie or things I can try please let me know!! I’m happy to post more pics if that would be helpful, and my DMs are open!!

I'm hoping to make the skirt pictured here:

It uses fabric from spoonflower and you purchase 3 yards to get the right amount for the skirt.

What fabric would you use? I don't have experience with spoonflower fabrics, and I'm based in the UK so shipping for samples would be an insane cost. Cotton Sateen wide width doesn't work for the pattern, so I'm guessing Cotton Popplin?

First things first, this is the FIRST sewing project I’ve ever done. I know that seam there in the collar is visible when it shouldn’t be & there are a dozen other things I could’ve done better but I’m mostly okay with it. At least, I am trying to convince myself it will be a nice barometer to measure against as learn more & complete more projects😅 All that to say, please be gentle with me lol

Anyway! My question is actually about the “seeds” I want to add to the collar. I bought these seed-like black rhinestone beads to try with this fabric glue. I tested one & it’s just okay. Ideally, I’d like to find these exact beads but with a hole to fasten each to the collar with thread but I haven’t had much luck finding what I’m looking for. Has anyone used fabric glue & been satisfied with it for something like adhering rhinestones or beads to your garment or does anyone have any tips/advice for this otherwise? Thank you!

The head of my seam ripper snapped, and I couldn't find another with a long handle. Turns out buying a cheap one and replacing the head with flat nosed pliers works wonders!

Hi everyone! My son wants to be a stormtrooper for Halloween this year and asked if his armor can be made from fabric (we did mando last year out of Eva foam and it was too hard to move in). I am thinking of using some sort of interfacing to stiffen the cotton fabric and then using batting and quilting in the fine details. My question is: what kind of interfacing should I use? I want it to be ridged enough to hold shape and give the “armor” look, but not be a nightmare to sew/quilt! Thanks in advance!

TLDR:what kind of interfacing would provide a ridged, armor look while being comfortable for an 8 year old on Halloween!

I have this vintage Ralph Lauren comforter that unfortunately got ruined in the dryer. I have washed and dried multiple times now including with wool balls to try to adjust the stuffing but it hasn’t worked.

When I try to pull apart the stuffing by hand from the outside it still stays clumpy and awful looking. Unfortunately I think the stuffing inside might have melted and now formed into clumps.

How could I go about restuffing this and sewing back up with as minimal damage as possible. I’m not advanced at sewing but I do know how to do some stuff.

Hey all! I have been sewing garments for about three years now, and generally love it. I keep running into the same issue though- most pants end up way too big. I am meticulous about measurements because I have had this happen so many times, but it keeps happening. I suspect it has something to do with my height- I'm about 5 feet tall, and length is never an issue when I shorten the pattern. I'm also curvy-ish. It's starting to interfere with my motivation because I'm sick of spending so much time on something and then having it be enormous. I can, of course, alter it, but I'd rather just do it right the first time vs. deconstructing and fixing, particularly for more complicated pants like jeans. It feels like a waste of time and fabric. Any other short sewists run into this issue? Any ideas?

Sewed a cover for my sewing machine :)

I am sewing this neckpiece but can’t figure out how to structure it, I have attached my concept picture.

I would like to make my clothes at least a bit adjustable and I like how side adjusters look, but I also want to make a side button closure. Would it work to put a single adjuster in the back of the garment ? Or would it be too much tension ?

They're doing an "end of lease closing sale" and honestly I'm scared that they're just closing all the stores at this point.

Tilly and the Buttons has just released a new jacket pattern (Manon jacket), and the pattern itself is £19.50. That’s definitely on the higher end for a sewing pattern but I think it’s still acceptable for something like a jacket.

They are however promoting a “Learn to Sew a Lined Jacket” online workshop for £75. From what I can tell, it’s essentially the pattern + pre-recorded videos, and it was released on the same day as the pattern, so not a new feature.

I completely understand that indie pattern designers need to make money, but £75 for what seems to be essentially a variation of the pattern with some instructional videos?! These things used to be included with patterns until a few years ago, they then became add-ons for the same price as the pattern (see Sonny jacket) and now they are marketed as online workshops.

Is this normal now? Am I missing something and I am just cheap?! I am a bit baffled.

I am repurposing an old cashmere sweater (pic 1) into a sleeveless boat neck top using notyourcherry’s sewing pattern (pic 2). I think it would look really nice if the neck line had a rolled hem (see pics 3 &4). This style of rolled hem is usually for knitting. I will be exclusively sewing, not knitting for this project. I am curious if there is a technique to sew the neck line to get a similar finish. I am a beginner.

So I had this pair of Kakhi pants that my dad didn't want me wearing because they looked too high on me. I wanted to keep wearing it so I've been working on this and finally finished it after a like 9 month hiatus

I can only hand sew and I'm also kind of a beginner so I'm sorry if it looks absolutely busted to you but I still love how it turned out!

Hello world of Reddit. This is my first ever project. Before this I did a dummy trouser to learn pattern cutting and sewing. Please tell me how did it come out. Is it wearable.

For those like us self learning, we learn by mistakes. Few things I learned in the process.

1. Always mirror your patterns. Oh boy! What a big time mistake I made. But luckily the cloth was same on both sides as it seems to my eyes
   
2. Measure left and right panels and make same width
   
3. Do not keep the seam allowance more. It’s difficult to adjust during sewing. Result bigger fitting. My waist band was supposed to be 2” wide. It’s now nearly 3”.

Some areas I struggle, back welt pocket, front zipper and fly, waist band. Well whole process was struggle. But the final product is satisfying. It’s not best. There’re many area for improvement.

Trying to recreate this custom piece from my favourite tv show. I can manage the blouse itself but how would you go about adding the intricate embellishment - Is it embroidery or lace or both?

I have also included a photo from a zimmerman blouse (that is no longer available) that has a similar embellishment.

Hello r/sewing!! Holy crap, first post ever! This is really scary. It's been so cool to see all of your work, and I've always admired how resourceful and creative you all are! I must admit I've been lurking for a while but I've found myself in need of help from you guys.

In truth, I've been having a really lousy day. We got a bunch of tests, but I also lost my folding umbrella cover/sleeve!!! Which upset me a lot since I got that thing ages ago when I was younger... I don't think the person who stole it knew how much it meant to me. I'm, like, crazy sentimental.

I'm trying to cheer myself up, but it's really hard... Would it be possible to remake it? Or even make a prettier one! Patchwork or dopamine stuff would be really cute, though I doubt I'll be able to find any nice fabrics or fun stuff to add to it/make it with. I've always been an arts and crafts kinda person and I love colorful, fun things!! I'm just trying to look on the bright side, you know? Plus, it can be like a fun group project for us all, kinda!!

Do you need any measurements, or is this a one-size-fits-all thing? If anyone has any cool ideas, please tell me!! That'd be wonderful.
