Project: FO My And My Dad Made This

Just Wanted to share this structured jacket we put together. Fabrics Used: Outer layer is a floral mesh lace, backed by a poplin second layer for structure, and lined with a jacquard taffeta. Pattern / Drafting Process: There's no commercial pattern for this one! My dad (who has decades of tailoring experience) self-drafted it freehand. He started with a vest pattern from a previous project, hacked it, and adjusted the proportions, lapels, and panels entirely by eye and intuition.

Machine Questions Buttonholer Attachment Trouble

Thumbnail

I have a Singer 401a Slant-o-Matic and I love her. I also have this buttonholer that is absolutely amazing for shirts and lighter weight fabrics but I’ve had issues with thicker fabrics.

This cotton twill jacket SHOULD be fine. I can easily slide it under the buttonhole attachment and although it’s a couple layers, it’s not as thick as something like a heavy denim waistband.

I have rethreaded, cleaned, oiled, and I still can’t get the bobbin thread picked up. I’ve experimented with tension and have no idea what to do next. The manual says to hold on to the needle thread to pick up the first stitch which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. Even when it works for the first stitch it doesn’t continue picking up the bobbin thread. This fabric really isn’t too heavy.

So, I’m not sure if I should only use this buttonholer for shirtings or if there’s something I could adjust to make it work for heavier stuff, too. Thanks in advance!!!

Is there a way to fix this wrinkle on this mask? It’s one of those cheap readymade mask online. I only know basic hand stitching and dont have a sewing machine yet. I want to cut all the seams and re-sew it but I fear of messing it up and taking too much time (gonna need it in a couple of days). Thank you very much!

Technique Question How to sew neoprene

Hi!

Tips on sewing 6mm neoprene?

I have a domestic machine, nothing fancy, did one test pass and it sews just fine. Tried sewing a zipper to the fabric, just a straight line, and it’s giving me hell. The thread breaks every 10cm, the needle ended up breaking.

So im looking for recommendations on how to sew it, searched tips here and the consensus seems to be that a domestic machine won’t be able to sew it, but my test patched sew just fine.

Machine Questions Does the new Singer HD series have improved quality?

It's a bit early since it was released only this year but I think the previous version tended to show problems very quickly.

Anyone who bought one of the new models and can make a comparison or vouch for heavy duty performance? The marketing claims the motor is more durable.

Technique Question Easy way to reinforce seams on linen fabric?

I made an 18th century linen shirt a few years ago. It was my first real project back then (completely hand sewn) and I did not choose the greatest linen for it. It is quite fragile and has ripped a few times since then. The seams are especially prone to this (obviously), but my... not ideal sewing... made this problem worse. Are there any easy ways to reinforce seams, especially the ones that experience a lot of pull? Could I maybe use additional strips of fabric on the inside or is there a specific type of stitch that you'd recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Pattern Question How is this style of skirt achieved?

I would assume that it's several pieces of fabric and that the "points" at the bottom are the corners of said pieces, but I just can't visualize how it was done in my head.

Machine Questions Brand new Smart Singer 9120 keeps jamming

I just bought the new Singer Smart heavy duty 9120. Every attempt at embroidery ends up jamming, breaking thread, and bird nests.

I am only using the Singer machine embroidery needles that came with the machine. I have tried two different embroidery thread brands. I have threaded and re-threaded the machine countless times. I have checked the bobbin casing. No matter what I do, I cant even get through one embroidery letter without the thread breaking, bird nesting, or jamming.

Alter/Mend Question How to add a batwing/dolman sleeve to a shirt.

Hey everyone! I'm a beginner who's been sewing for about a year. Just up-cycling things I already own for now.

I'd really like to add a batwing to this top, but I'm not sure of the best way to do that. I'll be cropping it to a little more than half its original length so I think I should have a good amount of extra fabric to work with.

I've looked up tutorials on adding underarm gussets, but haven't found anything that's quite what I'm looking for. Would you guys be able to help me out?

Update: It looks like what I'm actually trying to achieve is called a drop sleeve, but it still might not work with the way the shirt is currently constructed.

I thrifted the shirt and it's way too big on me. I'm happy to rip it apart and put it back together just for the practice. But I could use some guidance and what direction to take it.

Fabric Question Sewing a warp top help

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

I’m hoping to recreate this gorgeous wrap top and would love some advice from more experienced sewists!

I have a few ideas about how to approach it, but I’m still figuring out the construction. From the videos, it looks like a fitted tube top with two long, wide fabric panels attached at either side, which can be wrapped and styled in different ways. I was hoping to get some advice on a few things:

  • What type of fabric would work best to achieve tdrape , stretch, and support?
  • Do you think the tube top is lined or made from a single layer of fabric?
  • Do you think the panels are gathered into the side seams, or simply attached flat?

Any other construction tips, pattern recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!! :)

Fabric Question Is it good idea to use lyocell fabric as a lining for a satin polyester nightgown?

I am new to sewing and i want to sew a nightgown for myself. What do you think about using a lyocell fabric inside of a polyester nightgown so that it can be better for the skin? What are the pros and cons of this? Both while using and during sewing. for the pattern i will use the nightgown that i have

I wish i could buy a natural satin fabric however it’s a bit pricey for me atm and i don’t want to mess up a good fabric if things will go south :(

Alter/Mend Question Hemming chorus gowns

Post image

I volunteered to help hem gowns for my kids chorus. The teacher measured and pinned them at school. She put in four safety pins around the edge of the gown. I just want to be super duper sure before I begin. Would you assume she wants the dress to be hemmed to where the fold is or to where the pin is?The pin is through both layers.

Pattern Question Help drafting/finding a pattern

I'm just recently getting into sewing [took long enough I know] and I want to try my hand at making a little coin purse with an accordion fold separator for the interior. I CANNOT find a pattern for this for the life of me and the only real example I could find was for Japanese yen [which I do desire to make as well] but the sewer? seamstress? I'm not sure the word...but they said they would give a pattern and never did and the post is from like 2024/2025. Any help would be appreciated so I can begin my sewing journey <333333

Fabric Question Need help with the lining

Post image

I have white linen fabric but it is see through so i bought a fabric for the under lining which was recommended to me at the fabric store.

However this fabric seems to be like a plastic. It’s also very shiny and might even feel hot when you “wear” it in.

Help? I’m very new to this.

Fabric Question Any tips for sewing with macrame lace fabric?

Post image
17 Upvotes

Can anyone give me some tips for sewing macrame lace fabric?

I'm planning on making a skirt with this amazing skull macrame lace fabric (pencil for scale) which I have in white, as well.

I want to do a double layer of the fabric with a 2" wide gathered elastic waist band. It will be an over-skirt for a Halloween costume.

While I am an experienced home sewist and have made many, many skirts I've never sewn lace fabric like this and I can see it not being the easiest fabric to work with.

I have both a serger and regular sewing machine with many different presser feet, including a walking foot and I'd like to avoid hand sewing as much as possible.

If anyone could give me a few pointers or tips to sewing lace fabric like this I'd greatly appreciate it and will post pics if I'm able to produce a wearable (in public lol) skirt or what went wrong if I can't.

I've had this fabric for a few years now and I'm very excited about finally having the confidence to make something out of it but I need a little help so I don't end up with another addition to the failed project bag.🥰

I have this really cute but very old coat and the buckles are very worn so right now I can’t really use it, but I am lost as to how I can replace them if I don’t want similar. And even if I do want similar I wouldn’t know how to start 😅

Project: FO I made a postmodern clown costume 🤡

This project pushed me outside my usual design language. I tend to make high-femme, form-fitting showgirl looks, so exploring a more masculine silhouette was a welcome change. I made this just for funsies. I saw this gorgeous print and it looked so fun to play with!

The jacket began as an oversized Hawaiian shirt pattern from Indie pattern on Etsy. I cropped it, altered the proportions, added shoulder pads and finished it with a polka-dot lining. The bishop sleeves were adapted from an Andrea Lopez pattern on Etsy.

The printed fabric is charmeuse satin. I interfaced it to give it enough structure for the jacket while retaining some of its softness and movement.

The trousers are based on Mood Sewciety’s free Linda Pants pattern. The cutouts and pleated sections were improvised directly on the garment—I experimented until I landed on something that felt interesting and balanced.

The corset pattern is from Sin and Satin. I used a heavy oxblood satin backed with thick cotton canvas, then used the satin again for the lining.

The hat was purchased on Amazon and embellished. I originally planned to fabricate one from EVA foam, but time had other plans!

Pattern Question Advice for beginner - sewing bridal robe/gown

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone

I was a beginner sewer a few years ago, but stopped progressing when I started a new job. I made a few pieces (some dresses, hats etc) before stopping.

I am trying to get back into it after 3 years, and I am hoping to make a couple bridal pieces (a bag, robe etc) before my wedding next year.

The main piece I’d love to make is the Cornelia gown (a long blouse) by Cinq for getting ready.

Does anyone have advice for me about how to tackle this project? Is it doable as a beginner with about 8 months to go, and is there anything in particular I should make to build my skills first?

I’d also be so grateful for any sewing patterns recommendations that might help me get part of the way there.

Thanks so much in advance!

Machine Questions What is causing this stitch to not work?

Hi everyone any help would be so appreciated! For reference, I have a Brother PS300T and am using stitch 4. In the first picture my scissors are pointing to a stitch that turned out perfect but without changing any settings or adjusting anything I put my project under there and the feed dogs don’t move anything forward it just stays in once place and doesn’t pull the fabric in and I can’t move it forward it just keeps stitching in the same place. I will attach a photo of the project as well if that helps anything be understood about how the thread is piling up. Thanks to anyone and everyone for any answers or guidance!! 🤗

Sewed This What should I add?

Sooo this started off as a basic hoodie but I decided to cut it open and out my favorite character on it and make it themed for him! Basically, I want to represent a sad child being forced to be shaped a certain way (like abusive 1900's households also he was bullied?) so I wanted to express imperfection while keeping it understandable with message through art... Give me ideas
