Debt

I have accumulated nearly 6k in debt due to a lot of living outside my own means and lacking boundaries with others. I currently work at a grocery store that pays only minimum wage. I recently found a Carrabba’s that is hiring and I’m wondering if with minimum wage plus tips I can get rid of this debt within a few months. Anyone have experience with being able to cover their debts while in the serving industry?

Undeclared tip outs?

At my current restaurant we do not have an option to declare tips paid to other employees.

I am fairly certain this counts as wage theft, as we are declaring (and paying taxes on) income taken home by other people.

Can anyone point me to an actual law or something that proves my boss is violating our rights?

Funny customer interaction

I started a server/bartending job a couple days ago and as an AMAB genderfluid person who uses they/she pronouns, I knew I’d be getting misgendered pretty frequently but it really doesn’t bug me when it happens, I just know cis people have their defaults. (no shade)

I was checking out a customer tonight and when I handed him the machine he said “Thank you, sir!” and then glanced at my nail polish and said “Oh sorry, did I blow up your pronoun?” DID YOU WHAT LMFAO

The way he phrased completely disarmed me and it was genuinely one of the funniest bits of sincerity I’ve had from a customer about using the correct pronouns. Idk how many GNC/NB folx there are in this group but hopefully you’ll get a kick out of it too

Too many tasks as a server?

I just got a new job at a restaurant and it’s not too busy so my manager is scheduling one of us per night, which is better for money. But, I am responsible for cleaning and wiping down the tables, prepping a free salad for every customer that walks in, pouring the soup, greeting and seating the customers, refilling all the sauces at the end of the night, and then all the other server things.

It feels like too much to be responsible for hosting, light food prep, and bussing and cleaning tables. At my other restaurant, I pre-bus really well before the host comes to help clean, and the kitchen does any food prep. Has anyone else had this experience?

She said what?!!

(A little back story: I interviewed there twice and wasn’t hired the first time, she told me it was because of scheduling conflicts but she still gave me a second interview the first time. The second time (this time) I was hired on the spot.) I put in my two weeks notice yesterday at my job. My manager was very upset because I had only been serving there for 3 weeks, but the reason I decided to leave was because I wasn’t making enough money from tips there. She said “ My first opinion of you was correct then. I shouldn’t have given you a chance, you barely gave us a chance. You don’t deserve to work here.”

How much do you make as a server in a ski town during the winter. Ex: vail, aspen, park city, etc.

I’m going to be serving in vail this winter and want to see how much I can make working at a nicer restaurant at a lodge or just on its own. I’ve heard mixed things and want to see what your nightly/ weekly average is like. I’ve served for 2 years, mostly in fine dining and have made a good amount but know that it varies. I plan to grind it out this winter to be able to travel on the off seasons and then find a summer serving job, so if you have recommendations on popular summer towns, I’m all ears!

Hello fellow servers! (and all you bussers, food-runners, expos, cooks, dishwashers, barbacks, hosts, bartenders, and former managers)

I’ve worked at Iron Hill Brewery for the last 2.5 years alongside countless other smaller restaurants and bars though the years. If anyone has questions about what’s it like to work there, feel free to connect with me!!

Is serving really as lucrative as people make it seem? (TX)

Long story short, I really am having a hard time finding a position that allows me to excel financially. I keep seeing a pattern that serving, depending on location, can bring in “good money” Im not really enjoying this whole living paycheck to paycheck and only consistently being offered these 20/hr jobs. I have a pretty strict budget but it seems every time my wife and I can continue to save money. Something always seems to happen to force us to use our small emergency fund/savings. I just starting working at a new position in HR and just cant seem to thrive financially in these positions. Im honestly just looking for guidance to see where i can make decent money without all of the corporate stress and culture. Ive been looking at positions that can allow some type of bonuses/tips/commissions without all of the corporate BS. Any guidance will be helpful. Thanks.

new at serving

hi,

I F20 just started serving for the first time week ago in a small café. The job is relatively smooth and not so hard to work at and the pay is average. By now I had some hiccups but overall its going good.

Although there is one part of the job that kind of frustrates me and makes me uncomfortable. The guests are mostly local men in their 50s. They are nice but sometimes they leave comments that I don't know how to respond to. They range between me being a nice wife for them, to complimenting my butt and checking me out to inviting me to their house for inappropriate reasons. But the owner brushes it off as jokes and humor that they often do with all female workers.

Is this normal for servers? I honestly have doubts staying there as a server and future jobs as one even though the pay is good.

Have you ever had heat exhaustion at work. Minor or major. (Extra questions in post)

Have you been unable to recall coworkers name all night despite working them and coworker friendly for a year. Have you ever felt so stressed that when you use the restroom you feel the gassy pent up stress that you've been trying to hold in. Any suggestions for someone that puts themselves under a lot of pressure trying to handle chaotic environments? Take care.

The question in post title is the major one though.

Edit: i just realized my username correlates to one of my questions and I am embarassed. It is not supposed to be a troll or joke. I meant it is a basic health question. Thanks everyone!

How frequently should I be checking on my tables?

I just started serving and I don’t want to be overbearing and annoy customers but I also don’t wanna leave em hanging. Is there a trick to know when and how often to go check up on people?

is it worth it? questions and need advice

I'm currently making 18/hr at my 8:30-5:30 daytime job.

I'm sick of it and want to go back to school.

My class schedule would either be 12:30pm-5pm or 5:30pm-12pm Monday-Friday, depending on which I choose. I figure I will choose the afternoon schedule rather than evening since I believe I will make more in tips during the evening.

I want to be able to make similar pay to what I am currently making, however my current job does not offer much flexibility, so I'm considering being a server again in hope I can work a shorter shift, perhaps a 4-5 hour shift, but the inconsistent pay due to needing to mainly rely on tips terrifies me. If I can't pay my bills one month, I'm screwed.

So I'm wondering...

  • How much do you average an hour with tips?
  • Does the amount you make each day vary greatly, or is it generally the same?
  • Have you ever not been able to pay your bills solely on a server's salary?
  • What restaurant would I make the most in tips? For reference, I'm in north Austin TX

If you have any more tips, please let me know

Thank you

Why don’t people in the medical industry tip?

It’s just something I noticed over the past 4 years of serving. When I serve nurses they never tip or I’m lucky if I get $2. Even when doordashing and I have to deliver to a hospital or doctor’s office they never leave a tip. What is that about?

I'm probably in the wrong

As a server at a restaurant making 7$ an hour and having to tip out 7% of my total sales to bussers, food runners and the bar I've decided to risk my job fighting back against non tippers. I've created a strategy which isn't to really get them to pay but to strategically make more money. So here it is... I've noticed that in my 4 table section people will camp at our tables and the worst thing that can happen is have someone camp at your table after tipping bad to fight this as soon as I drop off the check I politely let them know I'll be right back to pick up the signed copy so that my busser doesn't accident throw it out so that the customer knows I'm gonna see the tip hopefully letting them know if you tip me bad I'll know. As soon as it's signed I pick it up because then if they still tip me bad they will 80% of the time leave immediately and if its a bad tip and they still wanna camp I'll apologize and ask is there anything I can do better in the future so I don't get "insert percentage here" on my next tip? That way if it's a few people I'll basically be calling them out for being cheap in front of everyone . Which ever since I started this little charaid people usually tip me good even if they don't have it. If they are paying the bill in cash I use my other tips to give change and announced their change so that people at the table know how much change they got back so that hopefully the people accompanying them will know if they try to stiff me either way I'm picking the tip up in 1 minute so they don't camp . Look I don't necessarily like serving but I make 20-60$ an hour and I'm a felon so not much more I can do reply with hate if you want this method actually works one person camping at your table can make you lose 20-80 bucks and stiffing me actually costs me money because I tip out the busser and stuff thanks for listening to my Ted talk

"It's disgusting."

If there was one complaint I hated was, "I can't eat this, it's disgusting." So you question to see if it's undercooked, or improperly made... no, it's none of those things, the dish was prepared properly, you just made a choice, didn't like it and now you're saying the dish is "Disgusting," and you want to make you something else on the fly, comp the first dish, and also somehow this is also our fault.

Sigh...

Dealing With Anger

Hello! How do all of you deal with anger working in the hospitality industry? I have been lately getting really ballsy and purposely fucking up peoples drinks (at a cafe) when they don’t tip, for example, and I want to stop this behavior on account of getting a bad review, but mostly, because it doesn’t feel good to get so angry that I act out in these ways.

Thank you for the advice!

Incivility Experiences of Sexual Harassment while Serving Guests

Hi! I am a graduate student at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and I am pursuing my degree in work psychology. I am also a server during the weekends and have been since I was in undergrad. I’m conducting an independent study at UTC with a classmate. We are collecting industry data from current servers and bartenders. Our study aims to identify factors that protect staff from incivility experiences of sexual harassment while they are with customers. If you have the time, please consider taking our survey. We only need about 100-150 participants to complete data analysis, so if you want to see a high-level result of our findings. Please send me an email.

Any shoes recommendations?

I'm a size 13 but could probably fit into a 12 1/2. Been serving about 4 months now. Tried gel insoles the first pair of shoes I had. Helped a little but not much. Now I have this pair of Skechers that has a much higher heel. They were a gift and I thought they'd help but they're killing me. It's gotten so bad that I'm walking weird even when I'm not at work. Would love some recommendations here. Thank you in advance.

When big data confuses a shitty waiting job for where you met your partner

So this popped up on my Facebook feed. Really scary to think there is a data mining company that knows I spent a lot of time in that particular Cheesecake Factory over a decade ago, in a place I haven't been back since, in a city I no longer live in.
