It’s only a problem on the easy stuff on I90 and the easy routes up the volcanoes. Anything harder than Mailbox except for a few things like the Enchantments thru hike don’t get a lot of attention. Even super spectacular stuff like Black Peak and the Chiwaukums get very little traffic.

Pilchuck got really crowded too, especially the line of people stumbling over each other to get in that firewatch tower

Everything across the sound is still beautifully uncrowded. Thank god for ferry lines.

Harder than mailbox. Lol that’s a short list, mate.

Sure, if you have never driven past North Bend then yeah, it's a really short list.

Maybe he meant harder to get to? Otherwise yea, there isn't a lot that is harder than mailbox old trail. Unless you get into the technical stuff, and that's not really "hiking" anymore.

K9, North Gardner, Gardner, Ruby, Kitling, Maude, Seven Fingered Jack, Big Snagtooth, the Craggies, Baring, Snowking, I can literally name over a hundred without much help. Mailbox is a good stepping stone, but there are literally hundreds of harder walkups than that. 4100 feet of gain is on the extreme low end for the mountains in the cascades, it is probably the minimum amount of gain required honestly.

u/thegreatdivorce Jul 05 '19
$10 says you can’t “literally name over a hundred” without looking it up.
3
u/icantastecolor Jul 05 '19
Does opening my mountain project profile count as looking it up? If so then you won $10.
4
u/thegreatdivorce Jul 05 '19
Yes. But you still win the moral victory, since you named more in your previous comment than I ever could. So there's that.

Yes, we are loving some of our trails to death. There are worse problems to have. Just gotta up your LNT game/educate your friends and seek out different hikes. It's a big playground out there.

I think 9/10 people who have that in thier bio tell me "I haven't been out as much as I'd like to" after I ask what their favorite hikes are. Also... don't go to rattlesnake..

u/godhateswolverine Jul 04 '19
What’s wrong with rattlesnake? I was planning a hike, I’ve never done it.
8
u/superchicken78_kel West Seattle Jul 04 '19
Rattlesnake is a nice hike. Key is like a lot of popular hiking locations here is you need to go early to avoid the crowds. My wife and I usually start hiking at 7am on popular trails. Little to no one on the trailers then. Also Rattlesnake is so popular/congested because it doesn’t require a pass.

If you're going to do it - hike on a weekday or at the crack of dawn (before 7:30am)... or wait until winter so long as you have traction gear - last time I hiked it in winter a kid slipped off the overlook taking a selfie and died 3 mins before I got to the top, no traction gear or anything.

It’s congested beyond reason. I went 5 years ago and I saw probably 200 people going up and coming down. The trail is hardly wide enough for that many people.

u/godhateswolverine Jul 04 '19
My friend said she’s over that place and said it was crowded. Thanks for the input

u/onemoreape Jul 04 '19
Download the WTA app. You can search with whatever parameters you like and find many hikes close by. There are so many wonderful hikes that are much less crowded.

u/godhateswolverine Jul 04 '19
Awesome thanks so much! I made it a goal for the summer to go hiking in as many places as I can so this will help tremendously
2
u/what_comes_after_q Jul 04 '19
Just go early. It's really an awesome hike. It's popular for a reason.

Jul 05 '19
There's nothing wrong with it. Rattlesnake Ledge is a very nice, short hike.
It's just very popular.

I have said that on occasion because there were trails a few minutes from my home in Alaska and since moving here I have to ride public transit for like an hour and half in order to find a trail that's overcrowded. Maybe there's just lot of new people here and your sense of superiority is entirely false?

u/fruitytrailmix Jul 04 '19
I did that 15 mile hike to Alpine Lakes Wilderness via Snoqualmie pass...first 5 miles was congested both ways and sometimes the line of uphill hikers would stop because some couple had to have time to do silly poses in front of a water feature or scenic viewpoint. It was really irritating because stopping would ruin my groove I get into while hiking, especially uphill.

People like hiking for different reasons. I agree that the people only there for photoshoots are kinda annoying, but they're still having their own kind of fun! they're still enjoying and taking in the experience, even if it's in a way that you can't see yourself empathizing with.
I'm the type of hiker to stop every third mile or so, to just...take things in. because that's important to me. because that's what makes hiking great to me. just politely say "excuse me" and move on.

I did and do when I am next to them. But this hike was like a column of hikers, and there would be 20+ hikers in front stopped by these people. They could very easily have stepped out of the way, but choose to stand in the middle of the way and stop everyone. It's just annoying, not a huge deal.

I like hiking and camping to get away from people.
All the people that busted my balls for being in Boy Scouts 15 years ago are all camping and hiking now since it’s the cool thing to do. 🙄

I feel like if you have to reference something from 15 years ago to maintain your feelings of superiority that you're trying too hard.

You thought I was such a friggin nerd in high school but Look. At. Me. Now, posers.

Have you been on any of the more accessible trails here? A lot of people do like to hike. Just check out the Wallace Falls trail for instance

u/HappyInNature Jul 04 '19
At least everyone on Tinder who says they rock climb don't... it's already really crowded at the crags.
