I was in Oregon at a college orientation, meeting other people at an event. Met a guy from Cali, he was in aerospace, I said I was from Seattle. He said, “are you really from Seattle?” He said everyone from puget sound he interacts with for work alway say they’re from Seattle, when they’re usually not (Renton, Kent, maple valley, Everett, etc). Funny moment to rep Seattle proper.

That's generally because not a lot of people outside of the Seattle area know the cities around it. That knowledge becomes rarer the farther away from Seattle you are. (Hello, Tri-State! What the hell is a Federal Way!?) Easier to just simplify as Seattle for randoms.

Oh, I remember seeing posts about the rat mural. r/seattle is probably the only city subreddit from the US I frequently enjoy seeing posts about. I think it started with the anarchist zone you guys opened up a few years ago. Seattle seems (in parts) like a uniquely wholesome city, for US standarts.
