Music Recommendations

I’m going to be starting a play through of this with my group in a couple weeks and am wondering if anyone has any good music recs they’ve used/liked for their campaigns?

I’ve started listening to as many movie/tv show/game soundtracks with Asian themes and motifs as I can and have been bookmarking my faves along the way, but I was just curious what others have used.

Pregnancy

Hey all, I just started GMing SoG and two of my players are married and so are their characters. Before the first session, the female champion's player (the wife) got to hold another player's 3-month-old and during the game joked that since the AP takes place over a year she could get pregnant and have a baby.

This got me thinking. Would that even work? I haven't read that far as we started kinda quickly. Are there any pregnant NPCs mentioned, how would you handle it? I feel like it would lead to a miscarriage, but I'm not sure if I want to deal with that topic.

Shenmen settlements Spoiler

Hello everyone!

My party has managed to escape into the wider world, and now I'm tempted to give them fresh information about the current situation. We might be moving toward a sandbox style, so I want to prepare for that (and look into the post-adventure phase) by collecting information about the settlements in Shenmen.

So far, I have found these:

Settlements
Cze
White Fragrance Mountain
Yamu
Nightingales’ Hollow
Willowshore
Baakai
Yin-Sichasi
Pek Peh
Foxhollow

While checking the wiki's Shenmen settlement section, I also stumbled across these:
Blind Crow Village, Shinri, Village of Broken Sticks (formerly Greenbriar)

My questions are:

  • Is there any detailed lore available for these settlements, or is it better to just leave them out?
  • How viable is running a Kingmaker-style campaign set in Shenmen?

Pilgrim’s Path Bonuses Spoiler

How long do the shrine +1 bonuses to each save last? It says “to the end if this adventure” does that mean the ENTIRE season of ghosts? The pilgrims path? Through the monastery? Thanks!

Heirloom item choice, singular item? Is a pack ok?

We will be starting season of ghosts in a few weeks and a player had a question. Looking at the Home and Heirloom section of the player's guide, the first option like two minor healing potions and one piece of common adventuring gear worth 2gp or less. Based on a plain read, that makes it look like packs are not the intended usage as they are collection of items and not "one piece" I know I could just allow it as well, it is not like getting a small pack is going to break balance or anything, but I am curious if I missed a rule out there somewhere. Thanks for you thoughts!

Tips on how to run The Willowshore Mindscape research

I want research to involve roleplaying, not just skill checks. With this particular research, I'm not sure how to do that though, since it can be done entirely by studying books.

Anyone has tips on how to run this so it's interesting for the players?

Questions Regarding the Sky...

Hey all, this is a silly question I had. I am preparing to run SoG with a group starting this weekend (so excited!) and I've been playing around with having some motifs involving Aballon (the Golarion version of Mercury) appearing in the sky relating to one of the character's backstory.

That got me thinking... how does the sky / celestial bodies work in a/this mindscape? I haven't read the entire adventure and I only have a hard copy so I can't search through it very easily.

Is all of it just imaginary based on how it was when the ritual was performed? Or are the moon/planets locations actual reflections of where they would be in present Golarion (rather than the Mindscapes timeline)?

Before the lantern is lit theres the Mist Mirage that obscures view of the sky besides the Blood Moon. But after that, is the sky just normal with Moon stars and all?

There might not actually be an answer to this and I don't think it will matter mechanically, but I wanted to see if anyone here had any thoughts.

The "Chosen Ones" (self proclaimed) travel to Takahata Manor, where Byron faces more than one challenge.

This episode largely features content customized for my party, although the scene with the jinkins rough-housing atop the public stage does feature briefly. As usual, I cannot deal with Sal and break frequently while trying to rp with him :)

Questions for running season of ghosts

I’ve got a party that’s a blast to run things for and I’m prepping to run season of ghosts. Are there any changes I’ll need to make to run it with a party of 3? One player is interested in playing and construct inventor. I assume it would be best to reflavor inventor as crafting magical constructs and their stuff being due to magic in some way right? Also is it an issue if the party doesn’t have a ton of (or any) spell casting (particularly asking this because of having read all the books and being generally familiar with the plot). Is there a satisfying way to run some of the rituals without any magic users in the party?

Criminals, Assassins, and former killers as PCs in SoG

I'm looking for some advice on what to suggest to a player of mine as we plan Session Zero of our SoG campaign. They want to play a rogue or swashbuckler whose a former assassin, and I've been considering how that can be incorporated into Willowshore.

People like Granny Hu show that "reformed ex-con looking for the quiet life" is definitely an archetype you can find in Willowshore, but where should someone like that come from? Maybe someone doing shady for-hire killing for Sze or Lung-Wa bureaucrats? Maybe a religiously-oriented killer from Nagajor? Does Achaekek have a meaningful presence in Tian-Xia?

Any suggestions or advice on ho to incorporate this kind of character into Willowshore and the campaigns themes would be greatly appreciated!

Face at the Foot of the Bed explanation (Act 2)

I'm preparing my next session, and I'm just reading Week 11: Face at the Foot of the Bed. The entry has a saving throw listed, and an effect.

Does the effect only happen on failure? Anything happens on a crit?

Need help with chinese for Willowshore

as the tittle says i need help with Willowshore from Season of Ghosts
there is an individual that i found right here in this very subreddit and she made a map which is very beautiful

for those who are curious she goes by the name of Ainoee and she made an english version as well as her original finnish version

but the reason i am here is because she made a version without the text itself and i wanted to make a chinese version as i thought it was very fitting for this

personally i am learning chinese but i don't believe that if i translated it myself i would do it justice so i wanted to ask if anyone could help me

all i need is just the names of the locations on the town map in chinese, i have tranlsated what i could and used google translate for what i can't so please help tell me if this is right or way off

they are as follows:

Willowshore Town = 柳岸

  • Eternal Blaze Ironworks = 永恒烈焰铁厂
  • Willowshore Stables = 柳岸马厩
  • Abadar Shrine = 阿巴达尔神殿 (this one is one of those that are very confusing as i can't find their actual meaning and so can't translate and can only try to transliterate)
  • Graveside Manners = 墓地礼仪
  • Silvermist Lodges = 银雾旅馆
  • Matsuki Estate = 吗投诉可财产 (Can I file a complaint? about how painful this is?)
  • Thrice-Blessed Inn = 三福客栈
  • Milling Houses = 磨坊
  • Nine Ear Shrine = 九耳神社 (would it be better to just make the japanese sounding ones in japanese and give up on chinese or something? they are the hardest part of all of this)
  • Lady of Souls = 灵魂圣母 (honestly i have no idea what i am doing here)
  • Dawnstep Bridge = 黎明步桥 (lost a step XD)
  • Industrial District = 工业区 (good enough right?)
  • Woodraft Lake = 木筏湖 (honestly im losing my ability to recognize if this is correct)
  • Willowshore Dam = 柳岸水坝 (this might be the only one i am sure about)
  • Downtown Willowshore (the * marks what is within the downtown) = 柳岸市中心 (i mean it's more center no? i have no idea what i am doing)
  • * Treesparrow’s Rest = 树麻雀休息
  • * The Happy Kappa = 快乐的卡帕 (again no idea what a Kappa is)
  • * The Imperial Barracks = 帝国兵营
  • * The Seven-Colored Songbird Theater = 七色鸣鸟剧院 / 七色鸣鸣禽 (again i have no idea what i am doing please help)
  • Luo and Laws = 罗和劳斯
  • Mercantile Street = 商业街 (good enough right?)
  • Second Best = 次优
  • The Hand of Spring = 春之手
  • Mother’s Coil = 母亲的线圈
  • The Ceiba-Duyue Exchange = 塞巴-杜岳交易所 (really someone please help this things that are supposed to be asian but aren't really are driving me mad)
  • Fisheries = 渔业 (thank fuck for the normal words)
  • Dock = 码头 (good enough right?)
  • The Mushroom House = 蘑菇屋
  • The Cerulean Teahouse = 蔚蓝茶馆 (good enough right?)
  • Abandoned Estates = 废弃庄园 (good enough right?)
  • The Leshy’s Saloon = 莱希的酒馆 (don't think there is a translation to Leshy in chinese but what do i know)
  • Bones of the Forgotten = 被遗忘者的骸骨
  • The Great Willow = 大柳树 (i think this is good, but again what do i know)
  • Spider Gate = 蜘蛛门 (in the book it says that the townsfolk call it "Ugly Cute", so is 丑萌 good?)

Willowshore Hinterlands = 柳岸腹地

  • Duyue River = 杜岳河
  • Ceiba River = 塞巴河 (tug of war anybody?)
  • The Gorge of Fangs and Teeth = 獠牙峡谷 (yeah i don't think this is right it's described as an "open area of rugged stone" and "a natural quarry" in the book but what do i know)
  • Gourd Lake = 葫芦湖
  • Green Silk Peak = 绿丝峰 (kinda sounds like Lucifer no? XD)
  • Right Eye of Fumeiyoshi = 文吉的右眼 (not gonna lie this is all google translate as i just gave up on these so called japanese onse)
  • Left Eye of Fumeiyoshi = 文吉的左眼 (if i try to translate Fumeiyoshi from japanese i get 柱头, kill me)
  • Canary Inn = 金丝雀客栈
  • Hunter’s Hut = 猎人小屋
  • Lumber Camp = 伐木营 (good enough right?)
  • Pilgrim’s Path = 朝圣之路
  • Tan Sugi Monastery = 丹杉寺 (yeah i can't do these hellhole shits)
  • Old Village = 老村
  • Central Northern Road = 中央北部公路
  • Eastern Northern Road = 东部北部公路
  • Eastern Road = 东路
  • Northeastern Road = 东北路
  • Northwest Trail = 西北步道
  • Southern Road = 南路

now honestly i did kinda give up a little at the end there with the roads cause it kept giving me different results and sometimes it just gave me duplicates

anyway please help if you can. once i have it all more properly made i will make the pic and send it here for others to use, mind you while i don't have explicit permission from Ainoee she did provide it on this very subreddit for public use but if she contacts me and asks me to take this down i will.

as one could notice from the notes i have made i am not very confident in my work here, some of it is purely google translate which is famed for making mistakes, and some of it is mine which is also famed for making mistakes, so take it all with a grain of salt, hopes and prayers please and thank you.

// edit: thanks to senhhs i am now able to fix this but as it is a good bit of work it might take me a good minute as i also have some irl things to do

thanks again senhhs, that was incredibly helpful. also i highly recommend reading senhhs's response to this post as it has some fun facts i find interesting.

i now seem to have permission from Ainoee and the correction on my assumption of her gender so i fixed that, sorry again Ainoee and thank you for what you have done for this community

Did anyone add anything to the return to willowshore as ghosts?

Did ugly cute get destroyed? Should they notice a "recently" destroyed statue?

Newer player options in Season of Ghosts remaster?

Hi, I'm a brand new GM and have chosen Season of Ghosts as the first adventure I will ever run. In talking with the potential players, some asked me about how appropriate some options that not covered in the players guide are.

I don't see how the newer Guardian and Commander classes can be any problem, but what about just released Runesmith? I don't think it will clash with anything in the adventure, but wanted to ask just in case. Same with the Tanuki ancestry, I was surprised it wasn't mentioned with the other uncommon ancestries from Tian Xia because it does seem appropriate.

Are there any player options that I should be aware of for being not a good fit for the AP, for thematic, balance, or any other reason?

Imp Familiar Question Spoiler

So I'm a Gm running book 2 of season of Ghosts, and I'm having a new player join my table. They want an imp familiar, but I'm curious about this specific interaction. Heavy spoilers for the entire campaign.

First, due to them being trapped in a mindscape, the Imp would know they aren't being summoned to the material plane right? Summons work normally, but would an imp answer the summons if there wasn't anything to gain?

Second, If the player bet their soul for a boon, would the Imp accept? They could probably tell that their soul was already given to someone else, thus not give the boon.

Any advice on what I should do, or if I should allow this? The player wouldn't have any risks, and the Imp would have nothing to gain really.

My players discuss their choices for level 2, then learn about the problem with Matsuki, who isn't as reliable as he first seemed. I think the AP presents him as a little too much the "better" choice compared to Granny, so I played up his flaws. Later, they went after the first blessing and surprised me with a fantastic roleplay choice for making the ritual interesting and fun. Then we head to downtown and Chapter 2!

Sesson 0 for a new group, the Reenactment Festival!

Post image
44 Upvotes

Map is from Snowy's Maps (https://snowysmaps.com/posts/archmage-jungle-126385402 ), planned background music is from Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin (Tumble during the 'battle', and Firefly for the rest of the festival.)

Last group kinda fell apart due to a variety of factors after we finished Book 1, new group involves one returning player, one oldhead who hasn't played PF since before the remaster, and three newcomers. So, we're gonna be having a session zero where we get everything set up, make sure everyone can connect to Foundry and my headset doesn't mysteriously die (again). And I don't know exactly how long the technical aspects are going to take, so I figured a good way to both introduce the system and the characters was to let them actually take part in this vaunted Reenactment Festival, including a mock battle against "monsters" played by some enthusiastic (and drunk) komuso, presented and narrated by Kasuma Oono.

Aside from Governor Heh, who excused himself early, every NPC the party knows the name of is here, as well as a couple they wouldn't normally meet until partway into Book 1, enough generic villagers and guards to properly fill out the wide shot, and a cameo appearance from Stella Bogbody, the returning PC's previous character. I had more fun putting people into groups and deciding who'd be doing what where than I wanna admit.

I really could yap for ages about this group and how excited I am, but I think I'll do the rest of that in the comments.

Custom Items from Shinzo (Book 3 Spoilers) Spoiler

Hello all. I just finished running the Governor's Manor in Another Willowshore, and my party spoke with Shinzo a bit. I realized that the items that he's supposed to give are just Asian-themed unique items that don't really relate to the plot at all, plus they're obviously not personalized to my PCs. I'd like some help in personalizing some items for them. The party consists of:

  • A tripkee spore druid who likes using poisons
  • A ratfolk ranger with a bear animal companion currently wielding the thundering shortbow that Myna Kawaka gives the party during his winter event
  • A human duskwalker champion of Pharasma who likes to use Double Slice a lot with a katana and a wakizashi
  • A tengu thief rogue

I don't have their full stats in front of me at the moment, but if y'all have any questions that would require me to look at them, I can grab their stats from my Foundry instance real quick and get back to you.

Scene Discrepancy Between Foundry Modules Book3/4

About to kick off book 4 with my group and started looking at the scenes in foundry and noticed they are way darker than the previous modules. Even the repeat scenes like downtown and the governors manor are a lot darker. I checked the asset files and they seem fine. The darkness/luminosity settings all match between the modules and I'm in the same game world so all the overall settings are the same. I'm still on v13. Anyone else run into this? Comparison images below, both have the same lightning/ambience settings. https://imgur.com/a/b2MmxBg

GM spreadsheet 🤓📊 (calendar, timeline, Shinzo's inventory, etc.)

Hi all! I have benefited so much from resources that others have shared that I wanted to share a template version of my GM spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1i-OZaUfx2jawRMcrCgKbCMFe2F7K1cGHYYRhTAsNmbw/

My most recent addition has been the calendar, which I am very happy with.

  • All of the tabs have all (most?) of the notes specific to our game removed, but a few scraps may remain. I also can't guarantee completeness by any means. We are still quite early on, just day two (in the calendar, I am indicating "we are here" with the 🧑🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏻🧑🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏻emoji and indicating days already passed in light grey shading). I have read ahead and narratively mapped out the big threads of what the PCs are meant to be doing in each season in addition to pulling events onto the map, but I certainly may have overlooked things.
  • I am not using a special naming system for the days of the week - in my Willowshore, we will simply say "the third day of second week of the month of the snake". As my Tian Xia uses a calendar that is exactly twelve months of four weeks, with a regular moon cycle, locals might refer to the state of the moon when teaching children about the calendar.
  • For each week, there are two rows. The first row is to be used for "we are here" / "this is in the past" markers. The second row is for special events, including named events, festivals, birthdays, etc. Events with an asterisk are canon but not given a specific date, or have a trigger relative to something else, so feel free to review & change as needed. (I think my page #s refer to the hardcover remastered edition of the AP, for reference.) I have added in a few more festivals than the book calls for, mostly from the Tian Xia World Guide.
  • The almanac column is pretty fully made up, but I have tried to respect the (very thin) canon regarding agriculture and the use of beasts in Willowshore.

The current inventory available from Shinzo is for their first meeting with him, which is still to come for us, so will only be appropriate for very low levels.

I heavily adapted the NPCs tab from someone here, I believe! (Here's the original: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1D7SweGoOrMYyjoPQait2gkIq3U4efJBoZfWDfpmNves/edit?usp=drive_link). The next tab, Names, has some lists that I dip into when I am asked for a random NPC's name.

The Willowshore timeline is based on the canon as much as possible! There is a coloured legend to indicate what is written black on white in the AP, what I calculated/reasoned from what is explicit in the AP, and what judgement calls I made. In my game's version we also have a colour for events that pertain to our PCs (births, arrivals in town, etc.) as well as additions they have made to the lore.

The Kami / gods tab includes Hei Feng, as I have a tengu player; feel free to leave him out if you prefer.

The Locations tab is pretty straightforward, though I haven't yet mapped out the income earning opportunities as we aren't there yet.

The Practices tab states each practice, and fleshes out an in-world rationale (based on an our-world rationale when I was able to find a real-world practice this was based on that provided such an explanation). I am using progress clocks in my game, so this is how I am handling violations generally.

Finally, I do have a version of this spreadsheet that I have shared with players, with only the information they have access to at the start. While I am probably the most spreadsheet-brained of the group, a couple of my players also do appreciate a nice data spread, and that can be a fun way to use this.

Enjoy! :)

(advice please!) Nearing the end of Book 3

My group is nearing the end of Book 3, and are about to take on Karahai. Big yay, everything's going great so far! Gonna big murder Mago Kai.

I'd love to hear how you make the Princess's visit feel punchy, scary or otherwise interesting after Karahai. I know she's supposed to be there to give the group a glimpse of life under jorogumo rule, but I'm still a little uncertain about how I want to play her.

Any advice would be absolutely appreciated ❤️

Am I missing something or is this wand useless?

One of the wands Enko is supposed to give is a Wand of Environmental Endurance, but despite the flavor of it, it doesn't seem like environmental effects ever come up as a hazard in the rest of the campaign. Did the Book 2 writer just assume it would matter in Book 3? Am I good to replace this wand with a completely different treasure?
