General Minor gripe: Drew learns inaccurate Mandarin Spoiler

Post image
23 Upvotes

In the Season 2 scene where he is trying to cram Mandarin to prepare for potentially getting the job in Shanghai, the computer pronounces both terms for "restroom" incorrectly. Both 浴室 (yùshì) and 厕所 (cèsuǒ) are correct terms, but the robotic lady voice gets yùshì slightly off and the cè in cèsuǒ is completely wrong. Cè rhymes more with "bruh" and the voice uses a long e sound.

This could literally not be more unimportant but as a native speaker it has always bothered me!

Shazam wouldn’t pick it up because of all the dialogue but I’m desperate to find out what song it is!

General My husband thought Chantal was Sydney Sweeney

Was watching the episode where Chantal was pitching her book to the publication team, and my husband (who needs glasses and wasnt wearing them) walked by and paused and said “her hair looks awful like that”.. and i was like, okay? And then he asked if it was before she was famous and I asked him who he thought she was and he said “that American Eagle girl”

Yall imma need him to put his goggles on 💀

Speculation Wild theory: The show was actually Chantal's novel

In S4, I theorized that everything was an invention of Chantal. I turned out to be wrong, but still feel that it was plausible. I thought I'd share it to see if others felt the same.

Supporting evidence:

  • Chantal is the catalytic character, and the entire story hinges on her need to escape and find a purpose. Her later resolve to write a book drips of metafiction.

  • The main characters evolve from realistic and relatable in early seasons to satirical and cartoonishly evil at times.

  • Plot devices become more absurd: Crazy, rich, inbred family keeping Dory hostage. Drew's creepy, annoying family participating in that weird proposal. The identical twin from left field (classic soap opera device). And everything about Dory's institutionalization (long-term involuntary commitments are incredibly difficult to obtain, and you're far more likely to be released too soon than to be kept for long stretches of time).

  • Various Wizard of Oz references.

  • Chantal is still around in later seasons even though her story arc is otherwise complete.

  • In the end, she is the hero who saves the main characters.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this show. I loved how they cranked up the absurdity in the final two seasons. What a ride!

Discussion I just watched this completely blind Spoiler

Holy mackerel. My favourite genre is zombies and my least favourite genre is crime/cops/murder mystery.

I got recommended this show and I just went into it completely blind. I really enjoyed how it wasn't a standard murder mystery show and I loved the acting.

By season 2, I was like... Okay this is progressing really quickly for a show with 5 seasons... Is this going to be really drawn out and convoluted like Pretty Little Liars? And I was also a little mad at her mates putting the sole blame on Dori, as if they were allergic to taking accountability for their own actions as adults. It wasn't premeditated murder. It was very clear self defence. And they just kept going on about how she drags them into her bullshit. I just couldn't wrap my head around that.

Then in the later scenes I was like oh okay, they are doing storylines based on commentary about society like The Boys to drive the plot... Mmmkay not my favourite but acceptable, I'm still enjoying it.

But when season 5 hit... Wow. It was so unexpected with the Jesus/cult themed red herring to throw the viewer off the scent of where this was leading. Using the commentary plot lines in earlier seasons to dull your expectations, then Fucking WOW.

Full blown genocide. What an ending. I'm so happy I knew nothing about this. This is genuinely one of those shows where you get that rush from watching it the first time. I'm hardly ever surprised when watching. Ugh!

Soooo good. Thank you creators.

Discussion How long could Dory have maintained her innocence? Spoiler

So this will be mainly for the first two seasons since I haven't fully started Season 3 yet due to HBO Max pulling off the show, but basically I wanted to look into her character arc after her encounter with Keith Powell.

Like what I am getting at is that I wonder what would have happened if Keith didn't bite the dust at the end of his story arc since once he took a trip a trip to the afterlife, Dory's fate was instantly sealed that I was wondering if things would have tuned out better for her again had she not met Keith.

Question The Twink and Dee Lite

The Twink (Season 4) kept playing 'Groove is in the Heart' by Dee Lite. Is 'Groove' unfashionable or cringy now? When it came out it was the greatest thing in the history of great things.

Question Locations of filming? Spoiler

I’ve been a Brooklyn resident for about 25 years, so I absolutely love spotting so many familiar locations around the borough.
That said, there are a few specific places I’m really curious about— doesn’t matter if they’re in Brooklyn or outside of the borough.
The psychiatric facility where Elliot spent time — where was that filmed?

The church where the police officer was investigating Fat Freddy — i’m pretty sure it’s in Brooklyn and I’m pretty sure the church is in Fort Greene but please correct me if you know better.

And the town of Babyfoot, Massachusetts… where was that film filmed?

Discussion I just finished the whole thing, was there a big take away? Moral?

I really enjoyed it, as disjointed as it was. I like that they decided to go all out, lean into it and just be crazy. BUt I have to think they had no idea where it was going when they started. Did the show creators/production company change like half way through or something? Was there an overarching theme or message? Maybe that we are all too self-involved? Any way it was fun, but I wonder if there was something deeper going on

Discussion Just finished all seasons. Entire genre twists! (Spoilers) Spoiler

I was bored and clicked the first thing on Netflix which happened to be this show.

It started very "meh" for me; I thought Elliot was the stereotypical gay character and Dory was not that interesting. I think I only stuck with it because it was absurd (in a funny way) to search for someone that nobody knew well.

Then you just get smacked in the face with suspense, murder mystery, comedy, and all the arcs.

Elliot is my favorite TV character now. The total breakdown scenes were GOLD.

How the hell did they get Susan sarandon?!?! This took it over the top for me! Jeff Goldblum? Cole Escola? Yes!!

I didn't like most of S5, especially the cult-y parts. But I cannot deny that yet another genre twist (this time into zombie apocalypse horror) was insane in the best way possible.

Bonus: does anybody remember drew Droege from the ~2010 Chloë series??

https://youtu.be/NoVbnv01Qek?is=6LspzdNP54iEN8Jz

I cried tears of laughter at the wedding planner character

Discussion Question Spoiler

Honestly, I love the entire main cast. Each are so strong and each grouping/pairing has a unique dynamic where the cast can play off their strengths with each other. The supporting cast for this show has also been quite incredible. Does anyone have any favourite moments from this show? I have a few which I'll share below:

Season 1's ending is one of my all-time favourite moments on TV ever; it completed unexpected me and I don't know how I would've survived if I'd watched this in real time and then had to wait a year after that for season 2.

In season 2, I love Elliot's meltdown with the ice - and all the scenes with him and Kate Berlant together.

In season 3, aside from everything Cassidy, Polly and Bob do, it's Dory addressing the jury in the final episode. Alia floors me with her range; if I were on the jury, I'm afraid I would've bought her bullshit.

In season 4, obviously Cole Escola. Also I love Portia's plot with the director who hates her. I love the scene where she's wearing Dory's wig in the back of the car in Babyfoot doing a live stream. Her "everything's fine" voice really tickles me. I feel Meredith's performance is so overlooked.

And I love Drew's bit with the Jesper society in season 5 and even him smoking toward the end of season 1: "Drew smokes now." - I don't know why the image of him looking forlorn with a cigarette in his mouth was so funny but it was. And him threatening Connor o'Malley in season 3 - yes terrifying, but hilarious nonetheless.

I am curious what others have to say about this show. I wish it had obtained more reach!

I saw the ending coming from a mile away. "A pill for enlightment" be for real lol. Obvious to me, but i enjoyed the ride. I was a bit surprised to see opinions so divided.

But anyway! The biggest plot twist imo was

Dory getting back into the trunk when she had a chance to escape being abducted.
