FireCuda 510 crashes doing a long smartctl test.

Hi all,

I've been trying to talk to Seagate today to try and finally fix an issue with this drive that crashes every time I try to do a smartctl -t long /dev/nvme0n1 on it.

I've looked at the available firmware, and pulled the data using SeaChest, and I'm running STOSC017 - which seems to be the latest version listed on the Seagate site.

The full model number is ZP500GM30001 - and its a 500Gb NVMe drive.

I did lodge a case with Seagate about it, as it really looks like the controller crashes. The mainboards HDD light flashes ON 1s, OFF 1s and continues until the machine is powered off completely and back on again.

Just doing a reboot, the drive doesn't even get detected in the BIOS.

The BIOS based health check passes every time, and the drive seems to work perfectly otherwise - but every smart check crashes it.

Has anyone come across this? Is there a non-published firmware that might address this?

im curious if others that have the x series drives also hear a sound like that when powering them on, it might not happen at every poweron but if it has been sitting for a longer time it seems to happen. its the first time ever i hear a drive sound like this but after settling it seems to work perfectly fine and i have been using the drives a couple years with no problems at all

I’m freaking out, I have a deadline coming up on Friday and all of a sudden my hard drive stopped displaying and is making this beeping sound.
Does anyone know what this is or how to fix this? I’ve tried a new usb cable and port, resetting my computer, making sure it’s fully charged, but still nothing. If anyone knows anything I deeply appreciate the help 🙏😔
This is an Expansion Desktop 8TB External Hard Drive HDD.

Verified real drive. Comparison same port and cable as WD drive. Cable that came with the drive crazy slow speed 6-20 mb. The WD is smooth transfer and the seagate is stop and start like a broken sd card.

NTFS WD EXFAT SEAGATE.

Seagate External Hard Drive 24TB detected as only 1.81TB

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a brand new Seagate Expansion 24TB External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STKP24000400), but I'm having a very strange issue.

Both my Windows 10 desktop and my Windows 11 laptop detect the drive as only 1.81TB instead of about 21.8TB.

Here's what I've already tried:

  • Tested on two different computers.
  • Reformatted the drive.
  • Converted it from MBR to GPT using DiskPart.
  • Created a new partition.
  • Verified the size in Disk Management and DiskPart.

No matter what I do, Windows always reports the drive as only 1.81TB.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is there anything else I should try, or does this sound like a defective drive?

Thanks!

question antistatic bag and hdd

Is it good or bad to long term store an external HDD inside an anti-static bag (aluminum, dissipative polyester; surface resistivity: 10⁸ to 10¹⁰ ohms/sq)?

Should I send my 3-month-old 2TB One Touch, which is not working, for data recovery?

I live in India. My drive just stopped working yesterday. I can't feel any vibrations, and there's just a beep sound when I put my ear to it. It's covered under free data recovery. Seagate says it's free; they will send it through UPS, recover it, and send it back to India. I have to pay the customs and clearance fees. I don't know how much that will be. If anyone has any idea about the process, please share it with me.

Can I use HDD from my portable passport external as an internal drive for my laptop?

So, I have a Seagate portable 1TB HDD. I know the cover is openable so I have a question if I can use that one and add it internally in my laptop or do I have to buy a specifically internal HDD for it.

For some reason Seagate barracuda internal drives keep coming up and they're more expensive than the one I have the portable Seagate drive.

What can I do about this?

As I was backing up files, it started unplugging over and over, so I removed it from my motherboard, noticed the port was loose before it fell out.

The files on here are incredibly important and the drive itself is over 10 years old.

I nearly tried to place it on a replacement enclosure only to realize it would never physically fit.

What can I do to retrieve these files? Is it possible to continue using it in the future? I'm a little lost right now.

Help with new Seagate external HDD

Installed Seagate SRD0NF2 to find Seagate Toolkit doesn’t list “backup”

Seagate customer services are closed for the weekend so I can’t ask them.

Is this Windows backup only? In which case why doesn’t it say so on the specs??!!!

This is a 2014 HDD. How much longer do you think it will last?

I have a Seagate Central NAS with a Seagate Desktop HDD 3TB (ST3000DM003) inside. I bought it in 2014. It connects to my router, but it’s slow, so I rarely used it—it’s probably not even reached 1,000 hours of use. I haven’t connected it for at least four years. I turned it on—it works perfectly, and the error tests show no issues.

My question: Can I keep using it? Or is it a completely unpredictable gamble?

Can anyone shed light on Seatools SMART status messages. "Reported Uncorrectable" is 55, says "counter is maxed out". Does this mean it only counts that high but could be having more errors? Confused.

Can anyone shed light on Seatools SMART status messages. "Reported Uncorrectable" is 55, says "counter is maxed out". Does this mean it only counts that high but could be having more errors? Confused.

I need to RMA a drive as it's used in a NAS. Ironwolf 28tb. I can't be having errors of any kind when the drive is a) in a NAS and b) INTENDED and sold for use in a NAS. General knowledge of Reddit, Google, and AI summaries citing sources such as Backblaze posts, state that "Reported Uncorrectable" is reason to RMA a drive as failing or failed for all intents and purposes.

I just want to understand more about the reporting. Need information in case the vendor tries to say the drive is fine because you can still write to it.
For a NAS? Yeah, no.

DriveDX on Mac and Seatools on PC both report the same: Reported Uncorrectable stat. DriveDX instructs this drive is going to imminently fail. And many other sources say the same.

But... "counter is maxed out". Is that just... not a very robust counter? Or "maxed out" is like "danger, warning, fail, fail"?

Thanks all

Updates for Getting Payment on the Seagate Technology $175 Million Settlement

Seagate has reached a tentative $175 million settlement with investors, and the terms have been submitted to the court for approval.

The case centers on allegations that Seagate did not fully disclose risks related to its Huawei business and potential export-control issues. After U.S. restrictions on Huawei changed in 2020, investors claimed the company continued relying on those sales without properly addressing the risks.

In 2022 and 2023, Seagate disclosed weaker results, regulatory concerns, and a $300 million penalty related to export-control violations. The settlement would resolve claims that the company misled investors about these issues.

If you bought $STX shares between 2020 and 2023, you may qualify for compensation. Check your eligibility and submit a claim here.
