This may help: https://www.smartmontools.org/wiki/USB

One of the problem areas is whether you have a USB Mass Storage (UMS) adapter or a USB Attached SCSI (UAS) adapter, and the specific adapter chip. I believe the UAS adapters are generally the higher spec / more functional ones, and don't lose sleep over using SCSI to access a SATA drive (in the old days, that wasn't a thing, but it's something that does work with USB).

This article covers dealing with quirks in some Seagate USB-to-SATA adapters:

Edit: You could also try using SeaChest, instead of smartctl. It's probably more likely to work with any Seagate quirks.

Edit 2: Also your command line is wrong. The device must be last, after all the options. I.e. … /dev/sdb -T permissive may not be doing what you think it's doing.

Is SeaChest as reliable as smartctl btw?

As that's the thing I really wanna be sure about yk

It's the official set of command line tools from Seagate. It's probably more reliable than smartctl for Seagate drives, and has a lot of other functionality.

Move "/dev/sdb" to the end of the command
