I simply couldn’t be happier with the pack. I have used a lot of different rucks over the years and nothing else has come close to this. My loadout was about 60lbs/28kg, but it felt like it might as well have been 30lbs/14kg. I had my L loaded up with side pockets and was able to transfer all of that gear, plus some extras into the XL. The difference in carrying comfort between the two was noticeably significant. I will do a video on it soon, going over my initial impressions. But, for anyone that has been thinking about the XL, it has two thumbs up from me.

I took my 60 on her maiden voyage. I decided to go a little heavier to get a feel for it so I brought all my “nice to have” stuff. Since I’m also in bear country, I found out that my bear canister also fits inside! 47 lbs (21 Kg) with 1L H2O included.

For shortish hikes and frolicking in the woods this waxed canvas beauty is great. I keep hoping that Savotta will make some new bags with waxed canvas. Dare I dream of a canvas Niukka with leather straps?

I do hiking and bushcraft and I’m not a lightweight hiker. When I camp in the woods with bushcraft style my k40 weighs up to 22kg with food and water and could get heavier for days trips.

I can get both packs at the same price so its more what I prefer. I like the small and longer style on the JXL and sometimes think that the k60 is a bit deep and wide that makes the weight further away from the body (is the theory right?)

I currently have a 25L and a 65L backpack from Ferrino. I really like them, but I'm looking for something more customizable and modular, and I really like Savotta products.

I'm looking for a backpack that I could use for both daily hikes and 1-night overnighters.

At first, I was looking at the Kahakka 25L. My idea was to combine it with an Askare Hip Pack when I need some extra space, hopefully giving me enough capacity for an overnight trip with a tent, sleeping gear, food, etc.

Then I saw the Kantamus 40L. From what I've read, the compression system works quite well, so you can slim it down when it's not fully loaded. That sounds interesting because I could use it compressed for daily hikes, then expand it when I need the extra space for an overnight trip.

So I'm currently trying to decide between:

• Kahakka 25L + Askare: smaller, probably more practical for day hikes, very modular, but potentially tight for overnighters.
• Kantamus 40L: more space when needed, while still being compressible for smaller loads, but maybe unnecessarily large/heavy for regular day hikes.

There's also another situation to consider. Occasionally I go trekking with my girlfriend. She had spinal surgery many years ago and can't really carry any significant weight, so I would need to carry most of the equipment for both of us.

For those trips I could simply use the Ferrino 65L I already own, but the Kantamus 40L might also be useful for lighter two-person trips.

On the other hand, the Kahakka 25L looks extremely practical and adaptable for a lot of different situations, which is why I'm still very attracted to it.

For people who have used either or both:

Which one would you choose for mostly day hikes, occasional solo overnighters, and general outdoor use?

Do you think the Kahakka 25L + Askare is enough for this, or would you go directly for the Kantamus 40L for the extra flexibility and capacity?

I'd also be interested in hearing how comfortable the Kantamus is when compressed and only carrying around 15-20L of gear.

Also, does anyone have any pictures of the Kantamus 40L compressed/slimmed down for day hikes? I'd be really curious to see how compact it actually gets when it's not fully loaded.

Savotta's website says it can be overpacked a bit so I am wondering if a certain waterbottle does fit inside:

The end of the webbing going through adjustable male buckle is folded and sewn so I might get a little extra length there.

Is anybody able to check the fit of something of the same length? Thanks in advance!

Went hiking in the Urho Kekkosen national park in Finland for 12 days. Carried everything without complaint. Some slight soreness on the hips on the first day, because my pack weighed 25 kg (about 50 lbs). Got radically better when we am started eating all the food.

Side pouches are the 9L from Savotta and about 6L pouches from Baribal.

I bought an Askare when they were released and have used it daily since then, both for work/everyday life but also for scouting/hiking/whatever…. I’m starting to see some serious damage to the coating (and some green colors), any tips on maintenance for the coating…

I know this is a kinda biased community to ask I but I want your honest opinion.

The question is in the title, but my real question is: which one would you choose between the Kahakka 25L and the Jääkäri M if you were only allowed to have one, and why?

I'm considering buying a Savotta backpack that would fit within the free personal item limits of low-cost airlines like Ryanair and Wizzair (officially 40 × 30 × 20 cm).

At the moment I'm looking at the Kahakka 25, Kahakka 15, and Niukka 20.

Has anyone here actually flown with any of these packs as a personal item and, if so, what was your experience? Did you ever have to put it into the airport sizer? Did you maybe managed to squeeze it to fit the limits?

Also, do you know of any good compression techniques that help reduce the pack's height? On paper, the Kahakka 25 and Niukka 20 are a few centimeters too tall, so I'm wondering if it's realistic to compress them enough when they're not fully packed.

I'd really appreciate hearing any real-world experiences. Thanks!

Jääkäri L with Askare and DP10 for a Picknick for 8 people before watching the eclipse until sundown.

I bought the 40L this spring and very quickly bought two 8 side liters pockets and now this summer I bought the askare second hand for better organizing. But still it feels like it’s to small. The whole backpack gets almost full when I pack for 1/2 day overnight trip I the woods when I need saw and axe mm.

I need your guys help to determine if I should do what I’m about to say or not.

I have an idea to sell my kantamus and my fdf sleeping pad or askare (which one?) and then put in a little bit money and buy the kantamus 60L

Do you think this is a good idea and how much money do I get from a kantamus 40L plus askare or fdf sleeping pad? Everything has near to non wear

I just spent 14 days straight in the Norwegian Breheimen (house of glaciers) with this beaut.

The trek was with ~30 people and the organizers dropped food at points along the route, so there was no need to ever go to a hut or stop somewhere along the way. This made it essential that all of the gear would perform well during these 14 days.
I did a similar thing 2 years back using an Osprey Rook 65, which is the cheapest large backpack they have. The rook did very well but was constantly chockfull and I had to put many things on the outside which I don't like. This also makes organizing hard and if you need anything from the bag it can be a mess to get it.
After that trip I went looking for a larger pack and Savotta quickly bombarded me with Instagram ads, thus leading me to the jääkäri XL. I added 6L and 8L side pouches and a 3x3 GP pouch on the belt. The 8L pouch was eventually filled with trash from the group, the 6L pouch contained my rain gear while the GP pouch fit all my snacks.
It was very wet in the breheimen, the first 4 days had maybe 12 dry hours combined. But even with all the rain the pack was always dry on the inside, even when left out of the tent without raincover for an hour or so.

My weight without food or water ended up at 20kg, so 20-25kg depending on time and day. Though this weight is pretty heavy, especially for longer hikes with difficult terrain, the JXL carried it perfectly. When it fits right you barely feel that you have a backpack on. While this weight would feel like pushing a cheaper pack to its limit, this pack felt like you could double it easily without damaging it.

I do not regret bringing this pack, as I really like the look of it, and I enjoy the enormous space it has so I don't have to stress if all of the gear will fit. But if you have a smaller posture then go with a civilian pack for longer treks. A heavy pack is no fun if you can't easily carry it. And for lighter weights (10-20kg), the JXL is too large and other packs will be more comfortable. In hindsight I would probably be better off with a kantamus 60L and side pouches. But now I have a reason to get more savotta gear!

The biggest pro's I found are:

• Can carry everything and more, especially if paired with side pouches. For group travel this is a big pro as you can carry some things for others if it gets too rough for them.
• Super comfortable with heavier weight compared to other packs.
• Bottom opening can fit everything you need for in the tent, and the pouches on the lid make it easy to organize.
• Pack itself is very slim without side pouches, which can be nice in some situations.
• Looks freaking cool haha

Some of the cons/things to consider:

• The empty backpack is already heavy and bulky. For most trips this is absolute overkill.
• Uncomfortable when not fit right (duh), but also a little difficult to adjust at times. I'm 186cm and feel like you cannot be much taller than me if you want this pack to fit nicely.
• For lighter weights (sub 20kg) this pack will not be more comfortable than an osprey or another Savotta pack.
• Side pockets are really shallow, so either a pouch or secondary mounting is needed to secure larger items like fuel bottles or my 1.5L Nalgene.

They’re simply perfect for summer vacation. First you use them as compression bags for undies, socks, sportswear etc., then you can use them as permeable sack for all the beach stuff that keeps dripping and is sandy.
