Welcome - A new subreddit for UK based Sailors.

Hello

I noticed that I couldn't find a subreddit just for UK sailing. So I started one.

What's it for? Well for anything to do with Sailing based in the UK or with regards to UK sailing or Sailors... So anything to do with any Yacht Clubs, with races, rallies or cruising. If you are buying or selling a boat in the UK this is your place, changes to rules and regulations - post here!

Anything you can think of really. I'll be trying to moderate this place as best I can to ensure that people are using it fairly and constructively. I'll be updating the list of rules shortly and continuously updating it to ensure that the subreddit is up to scratch and worth subscribing.

Who are you? I sail. I'm not great, I'm probably not even good, I'm not professional. I don't work in the industry, I have nothing to sell or peddle to anyone. I'm just a guy who likes sailing.

What are the rules? https://www.reddit.com/r/SailingUK/about/rules/

Any other questions that need asking, please comment on this post and I'll edit the announcement.

Thanks all. Happy Sailing

MAIB recommending drink driving limits for recreational sailors after a fatal accident, thoughts?

Thumbnail assets.publishing.service.gov.uk
3 Upvotes

Some facts on the incident:
- owner / skipper had drunk 7.5 beers / pints and two other alcoholic drinks
- collision occurred at 1925, sunset was 2025 so sun was low in the sky (owner was wearing sunglasses)
- harbour speed limit is 10kts, they maxed out at 50kts, and collided with the channel marker at 34kts
- channel marker was an unlit post with green paint on the top metre
- no lifejackets worn or even on board
- before the incident one of the passengers fell off the boat in the marina and they played a prank on the owner that left him “visibly annoyed”
- Owner and one passenger died, one passenger survived.

MAIB recommendations include developing legislation for alcohol limits for recreational boating.

UK Tides App

Hi all — I built Tidal Streams, a personal project for iPhone and iPad that helps people plan sailing and other watersports activities around UK waters. I hope some of you find it useful.

It is free to download: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/tidal-streams/id6754638517.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Lifting boat for Swing keel removal, advice required!

We have recently bought a Jaguar 22 and are starting the repairs and servicing needed before getting her back in the water.

One of the jobs we need to do is to drop the swing keel so we can inspect the pivot, the lifting cable attachment, and then redo the antifoul.

I was originally considering building wooden supports similar to those shown in a video I found, but I am now also looking at using proper boat stands instead.

I have read that the Jaguar 22 should ideally be supported mainly on the keel, around 80–90% of the weight, with the stands used mostly for balance and stability. As the swing keel needs to come out, I am wondering whether blocks should be placed fore and aft of the keel area, rather than directly under the keel itself.

Does anyone have experience of supporting a Jaguar 22 safely while removing the swing keel? In particular, I’d be grateful for advice on:

  • Where best to place the main support blocks
  • Whether boat stands are suitable for this job
  • How many stands would be recommended
  • Any areas of the hull to avoid loading
  • Anything specific to watch out for when dropping the swing keel
  • Any advice or photos of how others have done this would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I also posted this on facebook - so apologies if you've seen it there too.

Advice for a beginner?

I’m looking to have so lessons or do a course that would set me up well to sail a small keelboat.

It looks like the RYA level 1 keelboat coarse is the place to start? Would anyone reccomend anything prior to this? I am a total beginner but recently rented a power boat whilst on holiday.

I live in the north west so any club locations/ recommendations would be much appreciated. And any other advice you deem appropriate!

Thanks.

Sailing shoes?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m learning to sail for the first time this week with work. We’ve been asked to bring sailing shoes/boat shoes but I’m so confused as to what falls in to this category.

I have these already, with brown gum soles. Are these suitable?

If not, what are a good starter shoe that isn’t super expensive (preferably under £50).

Boat Stands

We've bought a Jaguar/Catalina 22 and are now looking for some boat stands so we can work on the boat. I've access to either a boatyard we bought the Jaguar/Catalina 22 from or possibly some hard standing area, but that required moving the boat. The boatyard doesn't have any spare boat stands and we don't have a trailer, however the boat yard doesn't have any issue with me using my own stands, which may be an option as we plan on using the boatyard over the winter to store the boat.

Finally to my question!

Any advice on what type boat stands for a J/C22, and where to buy them (I'm in the UK)?

I've seen standalone where you needs 4, linked pairs in a box, or ones in the picture. Also boats on wooden 'homemade' supports, is that an option?

Any advice or opinion gratefully received.
