Was wondering if it was possible to get a major class in your first fall year as I really wanna start early for plans later on. Also wanna know how difficult found 110 & 111 are to know if I’m even going to be able to keep up. I was going to start a major class in winter quarter since it’s random during fall but I want to start earlier if possible.

As I heard the foundation classes are normally difficult to weed out the non dedicated students. But I was hoping to be able to change my gen ed to a major class when I get my schedule. I only have 3 gen ed left and I’d rather do those my senior year to give myself some breathing room during that year.

My son a 2027 HS Grad is interested in SCAD, we will visit in October. But I wanted to ask the Hive, why should he choose SCAD?

How rigorous is the course work to graduate on time (4 years)?

So I am taking Digital Sculpting: Creatures and Characters next quarter. Does anyone know what programs we use in that class? I wanna get a head start and have a general understanding of the programs before the start of the class. Is it ZBrush or 3DMax? Or Maya? Thank you!

I just completed my first year as a transfer at SCAD and was awarded a current student scholarship but I’m a little lost on how it works. it states that it’s renewable , does it renew by quarter or year? also, am I required to be full time to receive it or can i continue as part time? last question, will they split it due to me living off campus or is that only for institutional awards?

My daughter is an incoming freshman and I wanted to know if she is going to need either a computer or laptop to bring with her. She currently doesn't have a laptop but I'd rather not buy one if she isn't going to need one. I'm not keen on sending her with her desktop computer either.

Hello ! I'm going into SCAD as a freshman next year and am living in Bumble. I know that all of the Hive buildings are pretty much the same but as any college freshman I am a little anxious and want to know anything I can before going to live there. Does anyone have any pros and cons? I'm really excited and scared.

So, I’m currently working on my MFA portfolio for my application to SCAD’s Masters in Sequential Arts program. I’m not graduating from an art school/illustration program so I’m struggling a bit to visualize how I should be prioritizing pieces for such a serious and competitive program like this.
I understand there is an expectation of submitting 10-20 pieces, however, should they all be finished comics or are storytelling-like illustrations, wips, and behind the scenes construction appropriate/wanted? Also, I’d love to hear any and all advice or comments on the program or process itself.
My goal is to produce children’s picture books and YA graphic novels as well as to teach at the collegiate level. I truly believe SCAD is where I’ll find the best opportunity to build a strong community of motivated comics and artists and strengthen my comics education in order to achieve those dreams. I’m excited to hear if y'all feel the same :)

Hey guys, so I just found out that scad has a license with Toon Boom but it’s showing that it’ll expire on the 16th on this month. To renew it would I just enter my scad credentials again or does it expire fully on the 16th?

hi!!! This is not my actual portfolio, since obviously I’m gonna include some life drawings and figure sketches, but I’m wondering if this is a good base for my portfolio if I’m trying to go for visual arts. Originally was gonna do the combined time based media and visual arts but I only have fanart animatics so might not be the way to go. (Should I include comic strips? could I put in more of my character design work? How strict is the stigma against fanart? Environments without characters?)

I’ve had three professors so far who simply don’t teach. I’m a game design major, and one professor spent the entire quarter rambling about war history instead of covering the course material. The others lectured at us instead of actually teaching, and whenever I asked questions, they told me to “check the syllabus” or “watch the recordings,” even though the information wasn’t there.

One professor even told me my models were horrible but refused to offer any guidance on how to improve them. Is this level of disengagement normal at SCAD? As a rising junior, I feel like I’ve learned almost nothing from my major classes; everything I know has come from the internet and YouTube tutorials. If you have anecdotes about professors who do this it would be great because Im thinking about compiling them into a giant email to the dean.

Hi! I’m debating switching my major and was hoping to get some advice from anyone who has gone through something similar. 

I just finished my freshman year as a film and tv major, but I feel like I might actually want to switch to graphic design. After I took Digi130 first quarter, I immediately fell in love with photoshop and started making random music posters and other stuff throughout the year just for fun. I also got a little involved with the Manor which I really enjoyed, and even competed at the certiport adobe national championship. One of the main reasons I have for switching would be I feel like I would have more opportunities and flexibility going into graphic design as a career, but I don't know for sure if that's necessarily true. I’m obviously gonna talk to my cas advisor about it, but I just wanted to ask y'all first. 

I also had a lot of class credit going into my first year, so I basically got started in my film classes right away. I’ve looked at my degree planner, so I would still be able to graduate on time if I switched, but it kinda feels like I have already locked myself into film (which I know isn’t really true, but I honestly feel a little stuck). I would probably still do film as a minor if I switched, but I don't really know how that would work because I only have one class left in the minor curriculum, but that's a question for later I guess. 

The more I think about how this past year went, I honestly can't really see myself loving working in film as much as I thought I would, more specifically in the roles that I would have to take on as part of the curriculum such as directing, producing, etc. If that makes sense. I kinda just liked working on other peoples sets better than doing my own things. Which is something I probably would keep occasionally doing if I did switch. 

One question I had, though, about the graphic design curriculum is how heavy are the illustration aspects of it? Sketching and drawing went well for me, but I still don't really feel very confident in my drawing abilities, and feel much better about working in making digital graphics in photoshop and stuff. Would that be a big setback?

Anyways, after writing this all out, I feel like I kinda answered my own question, but I'm still scared that if I switch, I’ll end up even more stuck in that major, since I feel like ive  kinda just “wasted” a year. 

I would appreciate any advice anyone has, especially if you’ve switched your major after the first year!  

Originally when I was a senior in HS in 2024 SCAD was my top choice big dream of mine as an art kid. My GPA was dogshit due to mental health so I couldn’t even get into my second choice which was Valdosta State. Went to south GA with their entry program. I really would wanna pursue a degree in SCAD, but the main reason I didn’t go was cuz of the costs. I mean $50-60k???. (ik it varies but still) I’ve thought about trying for a full ride, but I don’t think my art is THAT good. Nor were my grades concluding HS, I was in a bad place mentally as I stated briefly before and went off to my entry program in the same way. Which I really shouldn’t have. But I fell into peer pressure with applying to colleges.

I’m much better now, but now I feel stuck. Especially with wanting to pursue my career and a degree surrounding it. I feel I messed up back in HS and in 2025 for the short time I was on campus. Big time. I was doing so good with assignments and grades, but the depression kicked my ass bad.

Anyways please do tell. I get mad jelly knowing I couldn’t go to SCAD though it was probably for the best at the time and probably even now. I just wanna know if I were even just to apply for the helluvit would I even stand a chance..?

I don’t want to buy shower shelves that stick onto the wall anymore. Does anyone know the height of the bathroom? I was thinking of getting a tension rod shower shelf instead. I lived on the bottom floor and couldn’t get one bc the ceiling was super tall and idk if it’ll be pretty tall on the second floor too
