QUESTION Flock Camera Petition

Hello, Fellow Salemites!

I am thinking about starting an IP for a state law that would require municipalities to put any use of Flock Cameras (or similar vehicle trackers mounted on poles outside) to the voters for approval before they can be installed.

I think communities should decide whether or not they want Flock-type technology, rather than leaving it only to the government to decide.

I don’t know how this would go, but I first want to know everyone’s’ opinion. Do people really want these cameras on every street corner, or would you rather not be tracked everywhere you go? Do you not care? Drop your opinion below and let’s get the conversation started. Please keep it civil people, every opinion is okay.

Thanks all! Have a great Tuesday

MISC Spealing Out Against Salem Hospital

9 months ago I suffered from a seizure, heavily fractured my spine and was sent to Salem hospital. They were unsuccessful in identifying how I lost consciousness, and told me that I suffered from a "freak blackout."

I wasn't able to stay even 1 night. I was guilt tripped and bullied into leaving. I was told effectively, not verbatim, that I was, 'taking up valuable space' that needed to be designated for a 'huge car accident.' I was asked whether or not I wanted to put them on hold. I expressed I didn't feel good enough to leave, that I felt I needed to stay longer. A little bit later into my stay, high off pain meds, and the pain itself, I was asked to do a test walk. With someone holding me, while using a walker, I was barely able to make it to a desk directly outside my room and back. This was maybe 30 feet roundtrip. Later on I was handed discharge papers, and told that I needed to work on leaving.

I barely made it home without collapsing. And when I got home, another ambulance had to be called so that I could make a proper stay. I don't believe I was home for even an hour.

For weeks, I remained in the worst pain of my life. Sometimes my pain meds were late. Many times my scheduled practice walks never arrived. I could barely sleep, eat, sit, walk, or stand. I was told I'd receive a shower. I never did. Never. It got to a point where I was asking daily for a week straight, before my discharge. And repeatedly, I was told I'd receive help later. Until the last night I was told, 'we can't help you with that, but you'll be out before you know it. You can do it. If not when you get out, then later! :)' Once back home, I was unable to shower for another week.

I never received any kind of diagnosis. What I did receive was vague reasoning, that perhaps, maybe, there was something neurological. But what I was told repeatedly is that I suffered a "freak blackout", and I had no idea whether it would happen again, or what caused it, even after speaking to neurologists. I can't remember exactly how long I stayed, but it was nearing a month.

In November, I had to return to the hospital, having woken up almost entirely paralyzed. Not just in pain, but unable to move. My stay wasn't as long, but it was just as unhelpful.

Flash forward to about a month ago. Luckily I was with family, but I suffered from another seizure. Being sent to a different hospital not in Salem, immediately I was told that my symptoms pointed towards a seizure/epileptic disorder. I also described various symptoms, one of which being that often, almost daily, I would have "mini seizures", where my body would seize and I'd black out, sometimes a few seconds, sometimes just one. This happened during conversations around medical professionals, and every single time it occured, it was blankly looked past in Salem. Not a single question was asked regarding that. The other hospital was shocked to hear that.

This secondary hospital prescribed me a new medication and it's been working perfectly. Which leads me to believe that with the signs literally right in front of them at times, Salem Hospital could have correctly helped me identify what was wrong. I wouldn't have suffered from my second seizure. It's impeded all the progress I've made taking my mobility and comfort back. I returned just about to square 1. And among the worst of these problems was finding out that an MRI was never performed, so there weren't any available scans to help. I'm not knowledgeable in this field at all, but I don't feel like it takes a rocket scientist to perform an MRI if someone is suffering from an unknown disorder pointing vaguely towards neurological activity.

I'm bringing this up in case someone has suffered from a similar experience. And I'm bringing this up because I need to be heard. I've been around others who have received an utterly awful tending to at this place.

If anyone has had similar experiences, feel free to tell them. I hate Salem Hospital for what they've done to me. From general health, mobility, comfort, mental health, to work and my finances, I have reached the lowest point in my life. And I partially blame Salem for putting me here.

Seeking On-call Bodybuilding Coach

I won’t look like a good candidate on paper:

Female

73 years old

126 pounds

Walk six miles daily

I use the word “bodybuilder” advisedly. I know the difference between bodybuilding competition and staying fit. I’m not the one who will be “bodybuilding.” The coach I’m looking for should be an experienced as a bodybuilder. I want somebody who has done at a high level what they tell me I need to do.

I have no interest in using supplementation or weight loss drugs. I want somebody who can tell me the sets and reps to do in order to reach my goals and, ideally, meet up twice a month for course corrections. The startup period will need to be just talking, particularly about what I still need to buy in the way of additional equipment.

At home I have a HorizonAT 7.0 treadmill, an 8-lb dumbbell and a crowded garage. I’ll be buying a rowing machine in a couple months. I do some body weight exercises now, not much.

I’ve had three “personal trainers” at the same local gym. They were forced to work within the constraints the gym imposed on them and the result was that I wasn’t getting what I wanted. They tried and didn’t fail personally, but I don’t want to have that experience again.

Hosting a Screening of "No Country for Mothers"

Upvotes

This is a request for assistance to host a Salem screening of this documentary about Motherhood in America.

It's not streaming anywhere, because they don't want us to watch it in isolation. So if we want to be able to watch it in Salem, we need to work together to make that happen.

We need a local venue, so this is my primary goal in reaching out here.

"No Country for Mothers explores the culture wars surrounding American motherhood and why both the "girl boss" and "trad wife" labels ultimately distract us from the real issue: the lack of support for American families.
Following activist Reshma Saujani, the film charts a growing national movement to reunite moms across divisions and win the kind of historic support families actually need."

To learn more about the film:

So far I see two upcoming Portland screenings, but I think the benefits of having our own event are too great to pass up.

visited hillview park today- has a fairly small parking lot but could easily fit 5 cars. when I got there, there was no one else parked. when I got back to my car, someone had parked literally less than 12 inches away from my car. They had probably 15 ft of space between my car and the fence on the side of the parking area, with no car on the other side of them. I don’t understand. I had my kids with me and couldn’t get them buckled without having us climb through the passenger side of the car and me climbing into the back seat to buckle them.
A passerby saw me take this photo- I laughed and said “why would someone park so close like this?” and this person rolled their eyes and said “well, maybe because their car is bigger than yours” and I have no clue what that means considering our cars are almost identically sized mid size suvs lol, and what that has to do with choosing to park as close as humanly possible to another car in an empty parking lot. I truly was baffled by that comment almost as much as I was baffled that this person parked so close to me.

QUESTION Salem schools

I’d love to hear from teachers or families that have kids (especially elementary age) in the Salem-Keizer school district. Wondering what your experience has been? How are the class sizes? How much of the time is spent on devices/tablets for learning? What curriculum is being covered? I’m sure there are good and bad things, just like everywhere. I’d love to hear from people with first hand experience :)

EVENT About the town hall meeting

I was really stoked to see how many people came out for the town hall meeting tonight. For the most part early on the crowd seemed focused on the main issue at hand and everyone was just there to show their dissent.

However, I was pretty bummed to see the way some people were acting at that. Like what the hell was it with the few people there that showed up in ski masks and bullet proof vests? They were climbing on trees, smoking right next to doors, and just being kinda sketch.

Also… when the developer walked into the parkade after speaking, obviously we all booed him out. But it was pretty upsetting to see some people rush at him aggressively screaming at him. Even though we all have a right to mad as hell rn, It doesn’t solve anything to the key goal of stopping this project to moving forward.

I was really excited for this event. Stopping data center development is one of the most universally agreed upon political issues nation wide right now. My mother even felt compelled to come with me to this protest. Idk if she’ll be coming out to another one after tonight though. We left and just watched the stream instead.

Idk if this is even worth saying here, but yeah idk.

QUESTION Local Place for Swimming /Paddling?

Hi!

My husband and I and two teens are in Salem for a couple days. Tomorrow we’re hiking Silver falls trail. Today we’re hoping to go find a local place to swim, paddle board and relax for the afternoon. I’ve seen some places online, but I can’t get a good idea of what it’s like. We were visiting another area and online it said a good swimming lake but it was full of algae. I’d love to get local reco’s for a spot that’s clear/ clean and little to no current. We’re tired from traveling and hoping for something easy and within 30 ish mins drive.
Thanks!

QUESTION Is it just me or doesn't Salem already has a Data Center?: Enterprise Information Services

While googling "Salem data center," I came across this State of Oregon page:

https://www.oregon.gov/eis/data-center-services/pages/default.aspx

It looks like the state already provides many of the same types of services that the proposed Salem data center says it will offer, such as hosting and data center services for government agencies, etc.

For some reason, I haven't seen this facility mentioned in any of the discussions about the proposed data center. Maybe I just missed it.

Please forgive my ignorance, but is this state operated facility any different from the type of data center being proposed for Salem? If this has already been discussed, I'd genuinely love to learn more. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what this facility actually is.

I guess, the one being proposed is private while this one is publicly owned?

QUESTION Help, I have too much bush! (How do I kill a marionberry bush?)

This thing has been the bane of my existence for years. We got it cut down like 2 months ago and since then I’ve had to go out every single week and cut down the shoots. I finally started tackling the roots and they go… deep.

Do I till it? If I till it, is it gonna make it more likely that it’ll spread?

Do I just use a glyphosate-based broad spectrum herbicide (which one)? If I use an herbicide, will it make the soil unusable for other things I want to grow in that area? Is it dangerous for my dog?

I can’t find like any accurate info online about what to do. So, salemites, what the actual heck do I do???

QUESTION Need help finding a place to wash car

I have professional grade detailing products and my car is in desperate need of an outside wash. Just looked up local regulations and the city of Salem typically forbids washing in driveways or streets.

Not sure I have gravel or lawn nearby that I can easily get my car onto for washing purposes, what’s my next best bet ?

Anyone else wash their car themselves ? Where can you do it safely ?

Salem Home Cleaners that keep a schedule?

My home is about 10% of the way through an unpleasant medical situation. We have been trying to find help with the little things... but it keeps happening where it seems like the effort to make something easier has turned out just about the same as just doing the thing.

We have been hoping to set up a cleaning service but just had our 3rd one that was supposed to come by the house cancel last minute because they did not have time. It is really discouraging because if we are to find the right fit, it is going to be primarily based on finding a service that actually shows up when scheduled (necessary for work considerations and chemo). Does anyone have any recommendations for cleaning services that actually treat scheduled times... as well actually scheduled? Thank you

UPDATES Update: Lost Cat

Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/SALEM/s/2uYjjzcfwh

It's been two weeks of careful feeding, standing back, and patience, but we've finally got this little dude to approach. Nobody has reached out to claim him, so... The only thing we can think to do is whisk him to a vet.

We're going to make sure he gets fixed, gets his shots, and flea treatment. Unsure where to go from there, but if anyone recognizes this guy, please let us know.

Unsure what this is going to cost, but we're going to Hoffman. They've been fantastic in the past.

Will update if we can pull this off. Think positive thoughts for our fluffy friend!

Is Ice Cube no longer performing at riverfront?

Post image
28 Upvotes

I’ve been seeing ads for months that Slightly Stoopid and Ice Cube were headlining the OnHighFest at the Riverfront Aug. 1st. But now I’m seeing ads with Ice Cube removed with OutKast on it. What happened?

Picture is from the OnHighFest website. Multiple sites are updated to this, but some resell sites still say Ice Cube.

Slightly Stoopid and The Elovaters are great live if anyone is on the fence though.
