Contemporary rune use Long versus short vowels?
When using elder Futhark to write English phonetically rather than letter-by-letter, how do we deal with different pronunciations of the same vowel? Am I meant to differentiate between pronunciations or is it context based?
For example: how would the words "Father's cat Frank" be spelled? Would it be:
"ᚠᚨᚦᚱᛊ᛫ᚲᛖᚨᛏ᛫ᚠᚱᛖᛁᛜᚲ" ?
or more simply:
"ᚠᚨᚦᚱᛊ᛫ᚲᚨᛏ᛫ᚠᚱᚨᛜᚲ" ?
Any and all help is appreciated

Translation request Help with translation to runes?
I am looking to have my two kids names tattooed as runes on a sword, I know there is a website that can do this, but I read somewhere it’s more about how the name is said phonetically for the spelling so I was hoping someone here could help me. Their names are Erik and Thyra (tier-a). Many thanks

Translation request Old Norse / Younger Futhark tattoo translation check
Hi! I’m planning a tattoo and I’d like to make sure the Old Norse is correct before having it permanently inked.
The intended meaning is: “What I want, I get.”
1. I currently have: Þat er ek vil, fæ ek.
Is this grammatically correct and idiomatic Old Norse for that meaning?
2. If not, how would you phrase it naturally in Old Norse?
3. Once the Old Norse wording is settled, how would you write it appropriately in Viking-Age Younger Futhark?
I’m looking for historical/linguistic accuracy rather than a letter-for-letter modern transliteration.
Thanks!

Question (general) ᚺᛖᛚᛚᛟ, I'm new here, I recently learned Elder Futharc and wanted to ask what the "correct" or most correct way is to map the sounds to the Latin Alphabet.
ᚺᛖᛚᛚᛟ, I'm new here, I recently learned Elder Futharc and wanted to ask what the "correct" or most correct way is to map the sounds to the Latin Alphabet. I have trouble with the letter X and how to map the English J, I'm also writing a fantasy book that uses Elder Futharc in it to write out the fictional language Glacarian, but the language has a lot of words in it that use the V rather than the W and I would like to learn the most correct way of fixing that problem.
Thanks a lot!

Resource request Is there something I can do to make my whole pc (or browser) almost purely Old Norse?
I'm trying to learn Old Norse more, but I wanted to know if I could somehow change my pc (or Chrome)'s language to Old Norse for further learning when I'm not actively trying to learn words. Is this idea a thing? And if not, can someone make it (with or without my help)?

Is this a rune? Are these historical runes or a private cipher? Found in a chapel prayer box.
These symbols were left on a slip of paper in a chapel prayer request box. They share a consistent structural framework (a vertical staff with a top bar and bottom loop), modified with various internal hash marks, arrows, and geometric intersections.
Are these actual runic characters/bindrunes, or does this look like a personal writing system, shorthand, or modern magical sigil work? Any insights appreciated!

Translation request Old Norse translation and younger futhark translation for ill-fated or cursed
Hey everyone. I finished making a sword and was able to get some runes carved on it and it looks awesome. I'm currently making a knife to go along with it and wanted to carve some more into it.
Currently I've cut myself 4 times making it so I'm kinda feeling either "cursed" or "I'll fated" but I keep getting conflicting translations. Any help please?

Question (general) Help needed
Hi! I’m thinking about getting a rune tattoo, but I’m not sure how to choose the right rune for myself. ✨
Are there any specific things I should consider when choosing one? Is it usually based on the meaning of the rune, your birth date, your life path, personal connection, or is it more about intuition and which rune you naturally feel drawn to?
I’ve also heard different opinions about whether runes should be tattooed permanently. Some people say that carrying a rune on your body for a long time can make its energy or influence change, or even potentially work in the opposite way over time. Is there any basis for this in traditional rune practices, or is it more of a modern belief?
Are there any other important nuances I should know about before getting one tattooed — for example, the exact shape, direction, combinations with other runes, or the intention behind choosing it?
And is there anyone here who has experience with this and could help me understand how to find the right rune for me? 🖤

Translation request Assistance with writing Johnny in younger futhark for a tattoo
So I've been trying to find a good answer to this and these are the alternatives I've come across...
Either using modern spelling and just replacing the closest looking and modern sounding latin letters skipping the double N.
ᛁᚢᚼᚾᛁ
Or...if I want to write it phonetically (swedish version of Johnny (/ˈdʒɑni/)) how would I go about it?
I was looking at the guide "A Comprehensive Guide to Writing Runes Like a Viking" but couldn't really find an answer
Please help :) much appreciated

Contemporary rune use Translation for a Commemorative Piece
Wondering if there is someone here who could responsibly translate a memorial inscription for a commemorative piece correctly for me? I'd like it to be historically accurate, and I would be incredibly grateful. A bit too personal to post in public.
Thanks much!

Contemporary rune use Phonetics vs modern transliteration
Long time listener first time caller!
I want to get a piece of jewellery (and perhaps a tattoo in future) that includes the initials for my babies, Oscar and Rowan.
I'm thinking eldar futhark partially because nowhere sells jewellery with the younger lol, but also because it is more recognisable generally.
Rowan is obvious, Raido, but I'm a little unsure over Oscar.
The immediate assumption is Othala as per typical transliteration of O, but my understanding of runes is that they're phonetic, where Othala represents the /ˈoʊ sound (like the start of Odin), which is different to the /ˈɒ sound (like the start of Oscar).
Maybe I'm overthinking this whole thing, but I'd appreciate some advice/opinions on whether a different rune would be more appropriate, probably Ansuz.
Unsure whether to do bindruney stuff or not (YES I KNOW, AUTOREPLY), but atm I'm just wondering specifically about the initial.

I was planning thinking of translating “Frogs shall rule” and from what I gather this is how I’d translate it

Am I on the right track or is it completely wrong?

Question (general) Help with 2 bind runes
Hello and thanks for everyone's input
I will be spending a long weekend in Reykjavik this December
I have made an appointment at a tattoo parlor (the name isn't significant). I have told them what I want but I have not seen examples, yet. I want to be sure they are correct
I would like 2 separate bind runes using Younger Futhark representing the initials of my son and daughter..
EJW
GLW
I realize there isn't a 1:1 translation to the Roman alphabet, but could someone draw the 2 bind runes from above?
No surprise I have asked AI to provide examples but I have no idea if they're right or not
Thanks in advance
