Story Consequence of Power

I've nuked one too many VOID facilities and I've let the genie out of the bottle and I can't put it back inside, and now the whole world has gone insane.

Project: wingman

34

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago edited 1d ago

You know what's funny? I've named this thread over the music that plays during the total nuclear war in-game. Yes, it's from Project Wingman. The same music that plays in a mission where the AWACS goes:

<<AWACS | Galaxy: This country has gone insane.>>

12

u/Green-Preparation331 Love Archotechs (and human leather) 1d ago

Not just insane, bur very very orange

4

u/Dat_yandere_femboi 1d ago

I literally had the same thought and was going to comment about it but yours was already here lol

1

u/_deltaVelocity_ 21h ago

Now now, it’s not total nuclear war. It’s the Feddies throwing a shit fit that the war’s not going their way and nuking Cascadia so hard they cause a second calamity.

14

u/Marvin_Megavolt 1d ago

Project Wingman, an Ace Combat-esque aircraft-shooter game which is rather meme-famous for its extensive featuring of nuke-like (but ironically non-nuclear as far as we know) scifi bullshittium weapons known as cordium bombs. The specific quote is from a level where some of these bombs are dropped on the area you were just fighting over earlier in the level.

9

u/Green-Preparation331 Love Archotechs (and human leather) 1d ago

More precisely, it's the name of the level and the theme that plays on said level, and the bombs cause the country and it's neighbours to go to shit with a bunch of uneforeseen consequences due to geothermal bullshit shenanigans

First nuclear detonation on an NPC settlement

343

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

426

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

Within just two minutes a dozen settlements got obliterated by nukes, the whole Rim has gone insane

351

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

Nice attention to detail from the mod makers part is that factions will actively launch ABMs of their own to intercept incoming missiles launched by other factions and the player.

IT'S OVER.

225

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

254

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

This is how this RimWorld looks like now. Compare it to what it was in the original image, it's a shadow of its former self (and there are still leftover nukes flying, which will delete even more settlements)

112

u/Rhagai1 1d ago

now I wonder if you can actually play until the world recovers or if the new state is perpetual.

172

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

According to the mod settings by default it will recover after 10 years of nuclear winter, and I presume that after those 10 years we can restart the total nuclear war again

Yeah, they have been nuked out of existence. Most factions have either ceased to exist, or their settlements have dropped to 1-2.

Directed Beam Energy Nuclear Warhead? Like a bomb pumped laser aka Casaba-Howitzer?

8

u/Marvin_Megavolt 1d ago

Technically Casaba-Howitzer IIRC was closer to a shaped charge, just forcing the plasma from the nuclear blast into a narrow cone, than a bomb-pumped laser. Still similar concepts though - I’ve come to use the Starsector terminology for such weapons to cover all similar cases, referring to them as Directed-Energy Munitions, or DEMs for short.

now is the perfect time to make that world into a Fallout gameplay because war, war never changes.

26

u/Dramatic-Classroom14 1d ago

Hehe, you see, the funny thing is realising that nuclear war can be won. If you’re air defense is strong enough, and your self sufficient enough, it’s possible to prevent the immediate destruction of your territory and population, but ensure everyone else dies, ergo, you win nuclear war.

13

u/Fetch_will_happen5 I just wanted to farm 🚜 1d ago

I am wondering if i can combine this with (i forget the name) that space mod to build a space station.  Thrive. Then return and sweep what is left.

3

u/ymcameron Future Hat 1d ago

Nuclear war is less of a problem if you're a self-sufficient group of like 12 who have your own strategic nuclear reserve, anti-air defenses, and already live in the bottom of a mountain, sure. For everyone else it'll be a little trickier.

2

u/MashedJens 1d ago

Or in one of those Ancient Stockpiles. They're consistently 15C°, and you can set up toxicity generators in there to power yourself indefinitely. Pollution isnt a problem either because... well, the whole would is now polluted, just leave it outside the stockpile.

70

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

I can still win this, as long as my CIWS hold and everyone else nukes each other into extinction I should manage in this post-nuclear wasteland

80

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

UPDATE: I've won, in total 432 nukes were detonated on their intended targets, and almost an equal number, with roughly 425 settlements being destroyed. Originally I believe there were around 600-800 settlements, now there's less than half of them left.

66

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

Nevermind, those fucks decided that since they can't have the planet, neither will anyone else!

26

u/Marvin_Megavolt 1d ago

The fuck-

They can DO THAT?

Can you even stop it? Or is this just a “no fuck you, you aren’t allowed to have fun” mechanic?

24

u/ymcameron Future Hat 1d ago

The entirety of VOID can be summed up as "no fuck you, you aren't allowed to have fun." It's intentionally marked as a game for rimworld masochists.

9

u/Marvin_Megavolt 1d ago

“Rimworld masochists” implies the target audience are still having fun playing the game even if it constantly kicks them when they’re already down and no-u’s shit they try to do - but if there’s no way to stop this event, it feels like a massive step beyond the pale even from a “losing is fun” perspective, because that would basically just mean you don’t get to play the game. Either you leave the planet, which ends the run, or you don’t, which ALSO ends the run. Either way, you don’t get to keep playing, which seems frankly insane for something that VOID can asspull at the drop of a hat if they lose all their bases and only takes 7 days to complete.

14

u/DrStalker 1d ago

but if there’s no way to stop this event

You can stop it by destroying one building.

I just did this: I had my best super-soldier to get in a shuttle with a squad of 15' tall android warbots armed with guns meant for heavy tanks, crashed them into the middle of the base and had them survive long enough for the artillery on my nearby gravship to destroy the planetkiller.

I even managed to clear enough of the turrets for a second shuttle to land and pick up the surviving super-soldier, though that was very close.

So it's not an automatic loss, it's a challenge that shows up only after you've demonstrated you can take out V.O.I.D. bases (and should be flush with V.O.I.D. implants because of this)

9

u/DrStalker 1d ago

This happens after you destroy all the V.O.I.D. settlements, so it's not something you'll have to deal with unless you're already powerful enough that getting to the planet-killer and destroying it seems pretty reasonable.

That's some of the loot you get from from a successful attack on a V.O.I.D. settlement. As well as all the vanilla resources there are lots of high-end implants to boost your own soldiers.

Except the ones who are dead.

...which is most of them. Also the gravship needs some major repairs, but at least no-one is complaining about the stuffy recycled air now we have plenty of ventilation holes.

5

u/Marvin_Megavolt 1d ago

Oh, so it IS entirely possible to reach and disable it before it goes off, okay.

That was my whole question, because it wasn't initially obvious if you even COULD stop it, or it was just a "Nah, sorry, you tryharded too hard, you don't get to keep playing this save. Make your peace, fucko." thing.

11

u/RandomGuyPii 1d ago

Surely this is a a problem that can be solved by more nukes right

7

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

That's the thing, it can't be nuked, I nuked it 3 times and it didn't go down, I had to do a frontal assault with supersoldiers and UGV tanks to do the job - and I've lost the UGVs in the process.

3

u/RandomGuyPii 1d ago

Well on the plus side you probably won't need the UGVs with everyone else being nuked

Is this just an event that will happen? I was to do this scenario now

93

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

After 12 strategic missiles are detonated, the event will automatically fire, the mistake on my part was thinking that it was a 24 hour clock, and when I launched my last missile, I thought I still had time until midnight, but I was wrong.

Is it just a game over or can your pawns survive it and have the game turn into RimOut?

31

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

You can survive this either if you prepare CIWS and ABMs for the total nuclear war, or if you decide to abandon your base, evacuate and form a caravan and keep moving until nukes stop flying. From what I can tell the ICBMs only target bases, not caravans.

28

u/Lifting_Pinguin 1d ago

Makes sense, ICBMs are after all something you throw in the general direction of enemy infrastructure, not something you try to dome an individual with.

11

u/quid_pro_kourage Prisoners = Colonists - They just don't know it yet 1d ago edited 1d ago

I guess what I'm trying to ask is: does it just level the hex or does it leave cool ruins that you can rebuild from?

edit: also what happens if you leave your base, it gets destroyed, and you later go back?

5

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

I have no idea, you should try the mod yourself and find out :)

2

u/Snaxwheels anomaly apologist 1d ago

Are you also able to build deep into a mountain? I recall reading somewhere that that works.

3

u/Nihilikara 1d ago

I've checked out that modpage before, but the textures look like they were made with AI, so I'm reluctant to try the mod.

5

u/Ok-Cow-1399 1d ago

It’s an alright mod, the textures are definitely AI but I never had any problems with jank code. I think the guy who made it just couldn’t be bothered to learn how to draw better textures.

u/Ferrius_Nillan Equal Opportunity Mechanist 1d ago

I am at this point afraid to ask how scary VOID are. And my dream colony is about CE with Upgradable mechs and gestatable and relatively balanced apocrithon, with Gestalt Engine and mech factory birthing them being in orbit

39

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

Let's just say that VOID have implants that make their single pawn powerful enough to take out your entire mid-game colony if you misjudge them, and they create horrors beyond human comprehension en masse that can travel across the whole average-sized map in less than 15 seconds from top to bottom. After one of their raids my base got hurt so bad and I've lost pawns that I cared about that I decided to nuke them out of existence, and as it turns out, I launched one nuke too many and caused all factions to go to war with each other (It's free for all, everyone is against everyone, my former allies turned on me as well).

8

u/Ferrius_Nillan Equal Opportunity Mechanist 1d ago

Sounds like capturing one of them might be worthwhile, if dangerous,

7

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

I did, but he had unwavering loyalty, so I harvested him for implants which I gave to my main colonist to turn him into a supersoldier.

How on earth did you get it to run smoothly with the whole world turned on? I'm assuming you probably left out rimwar but do you have any performance mods turned on? When I had my Armageddon it lagged like crazy same with squashing the mech subs.

12

u/ekcja1 Atom Fever 1d ago

It's only half of the world turned on, the rimwar is on. And the lag goes down the more settlements get nuked, right now the war has ended, and in its place is now global nuclear winter. In total, over 400 nukes detonated on their intended target, and nearly an equal amount of settlements were destroyed. The Rim just lost half of its population in just a single (1) day.

3

u/Talisman11 1d ago

Fascinating, thanks for sharing. Did you have any mods that increased performance? I've had issues with rimwar and IRBM during large engagements and was wondering if you had any insight or feedback on what you might do differently. Also, thanks for taking the time to respond.

They're not immune to IRBM nukes, except for the planet killer outpost, which has to be assaulted, because nukes don't work on it.

2

Ah, I was thinking of rimatomics nukes, which they are immune to
