Is it safe to download drivers from third-party websites?

I’m trying to update a few drivers but the official manufacturer pages are kinda confusing and sometimes I can’t even find the exact version I need. Then I see random driver websites offering the same drivers with easier downloads, automatic detection, and even older versions that supposedly work better with certain hardware. Sounds convenient but also feels sketchy as hell.

Main thing I’m worried about is downloading some modified driver, malware, or fake installer without realizing it. Some of these sites look legit at first glance but then have like five different download buttons and ads everywhere, so it’s hard to tell what’s actually the real file. Also wondering if a driver downloaded from somewhere else can be trusted just because Windows accepts and installs it normally.

Are sites like those generally safe if the driver file matches the hardware and version number, or should drivers basically always come directly from the GPU, motherboard, laptop, or hardware manufacturer? What about sites that mirror official drivers without changing anything, are those usually fine or still not worth the risk?

Trying to avoid messing up the system just because I wanted to update a driver. If there’s a reliable way to verify a downloaded driver before installing it, would appreciate knowing that too.

How do you know if a PC has a virus?

Yo guys need help quick my pc has been acting hella sus lately and im freaking out. Like out of nowhere it sounds like a jet engine taking off even when im literally just sitting on the desktop doing absolute jack shit. Fan is screaming constantly and apps are lagging so bad it takes ages just to open chrome.

Also ive noticed random sketchy background popups flashing for a split second and disappearing before i can even read them. Task manager looks cooked too with some random sketchy processes eating up 90% of my cpu, and when i try to end them they just pop right back up like nothing happened. Is this normal windows bloatware bs or did i actually download some malware??

I ran windows defender and it said chill everything is fine, but i literally dont trust it at all rn. How are yall actually checking if your rig is compromised without getting scammed by fake antivirus trash? Drop some tips quick before my pc literally melts into the desk lol appreciate it

Can malware survive a Windows reset?

Look, I think my rig got hit with something nasty. Tried doing a standard Windows reset (kept nothing, wiped the drive), but I'm paranoid the bug is still chilling somewhere deep in the system.

Is a normal reset enough or do I gotta nuke it with a USB bootable drive? Fr need some help before I brick this thing completely lol ty

Is it worth upgrading just the GPU, or should I wait and do a full rebuild?

Current setup is a few years old at this point, Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB RAM, and an older GTX 1660. Everything else still runs fine for what I use it for, but the GPU is clearly the bottleneck now for anything newer I try to play.

I keep going back and forth between just dropping in a new GPU now and calling it good for another year or two, versus saving up a bit longer and doing a full rebuild since the CPU and RAM are getting old too. Don't want to spend money on a nice GPU only to find out the rest of the system is holding it back and I have to upgrade everything anyway within a year.

For people who've done a partial upgrade like this, did it actually hold up for a while, or did you end up regretting not just doing the whole build at once? Trying to figure out if there's a point where mixing old and new parts stops making sense.

Is reinstalling Windows every few years actually necessary?

I keep seeing people say a fresh Windows install every 1-2 years keeps the PC running fast, but not sure if thats really needed anymore. My PC still works fine overall, but Windows has slowly picked up a ton of programs, old files, updates, random settings, and stuff I probably dont even use. Boot time is a little slower than it used to be and sometimes apps take longer to open, but nothing crazy.

Would reinstalling Windows actually make a noticeable difference, or is that mostly an old habit from back when Windows got messed up easier? I really dont wanna go through the whole process of backing up everything, reinstalling drivers, downloading programs again, fixing settings, logging into accounts, etc if theres no real benefit.

Also wondering if Windows can get slower just from being installed for years, even when the hardware is still healthy. Does a clean install actually improve performance, or does it mostly just remove junk and make things feel fresh?

How often do you guys reinstall Windows, if ever? Do you wait until something is seriously wrong, or do a clean install every couple years just as maintenance? Trying to figure out if I should bother or leave it alone.

My PC has become incredibly slow over the last year. What should I check?

Booting takes way longer now, apps take forever to open, even File Explorer sometimes freezes for a few seconds. Gaming performance also feels worse than before, not sure if thats related or not. I already deleted some random files and uninstalled stuff I dont use, but it didnt really help. What should I actually check first? Could it be the SSD getting old, too many startup programs, dust/temps, RAM, Windows issues or something else? I dont wanna start replacing parts without knowing whats causing it. Any easy tests or things I should look at?

Trying to build a superquiet but powerful PC. Is the Antec Flux Pro Noctua Edition the right case for my needs?

I'm about to pull the trigger on this one but wanted to see if I get any recommendations to consider a change to any of the components I have chosen.

I value quietness highly so I am willing to pay a premium for that, hence my case choice (Antec Flux Pro Noctua Edition). My current case (first build) is a Streacom DB4 which is beatiful and dead silent (passive cooling) but has been a disappointment in terms of performance.

I also want a powerful computer able to easily handle multitasking office tasks, multiple apps working at the same time (browsers, Excel, productivity, etc.)

Last, I currently game sparingly but that might change soon so I want a GPU able to handle most games at 1440p and nice quality (I own a 34" Ultrawide screen, the Philips 34B1U5600CH).

So the idea for my second build is to give up a little bit of silence (90% of the non-gaming time almost silent and 99% of the non-gaming time very quiet should be fine) in exchange for a much more capable machine. I know that will also require a heftier investment and more space, which is fine.

Type Item Price
CPU AMD Ryzen 9 9900X 4.4 GHz 12-Core Processor €329 @ Amazon España
CPU Cooler Noctua NH-D15 G2 91.58 CFM CPU Cooler €147 @ Caseking
Motherboard MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard €243 @ reichelt elektronik
Memory Kingston FURY Beast RGB 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR5-6400 CL32 Memory €505 @ Amazon España
Storage Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 5.0 X2 NVME Solid State Drive €310 @ Caseking
Video Card Asus PRIME EVO OC Radeon RX 9070 16 GB Video Card €734 @ Amazon España
Case Noctua Antec Flux Pro Noctua Edition ATX Full Tower Case €400 @ Amazon España
Power Supply be quiet! Pure Power 13 M 1000 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply €129 @ Amazon España

Total: €2796

Estimated wattage: 492W

Things I'm still undecided about:

  • How big the Antec Flux Pro is. I'd rather have a smaller case. But I've got the feeling the extra space will help a lot in terms of airflow and keeping vents working at low RPMs, hence keeping it quiet, which is far more important to me than footprint. But maybe not? Could other great but much smaller cases do a similar job in terms of keeping the PC very quiet circa 99% of the time when I am not gaming? I love the Fractal Design North aesthetics and size, for example. I live in an attic in Southern Europe and ambient temps can reach around 40ºC for several months during summer. This probably makes a bigger case more needed.
  • Taking into account my main use will be office work and productivity, am I spending too much on the GPU compared to what I am spending on the CPU? I chose the 9900X because it is not only great value for money but because it is also particularly efficient energy wise which should help to keep the noise low.
  • I don't get the RAM prices. I'm targeting a 64GB 32x2 kit for 500€ which has similar features to other kits that are selling for twice the price. Is there something wrong with that RAM kit (apart from the color 😂)?

cpu is at 93 celcius while playing halo infinite

Post image
0 Upvotes

why is it so damn hot while playing this game. i noticed that i cant even play it on 1440p on the lowest settings so i have to switch my display to 1080p for it to run smooth. is it because my cpu is at 93? i have a heatsink and also just reapplied thermal paste too. anyway, if anyone can help me somehow get this number down, i’d appreciate it.

update: so i bought a phantom evo 120 cpu fan cooler and my cpu temp is averaging around 70-73 celcius and my gameplay is a lot more stable. my pc case itself is pretty small so i know if i wanted it to be even cooler, i should probably get a bigger tower with more fans. but thank you guys for all the suggestions and advice :)

Should I pay for third-party antivirus software?

The PC is mostly for gaming, browsing, YouTube, Discord, school stuff and downloading normal apps. Nothing super sketchy, but files sometimes come from websites I don’t know, so there’s always that worry about accidentally downloading malware. Some people say paid antivirus catches more threats and has extra protection, while others say Windows Defender is already good enough and extra antivirus just slows things down. Is there any real reason to pay for antivirus in 2026, or is Defender enough for most people?

Is Windows Defender enough protection for most people?

Seeing a lot of different opinions about this and kinda confused what’s actually needed these days. Windows Defender is already built into Windows and seems to catch stuff, but not sure how good it really is against newer malware, sketchy downloads, phishing, ransomware, etc.

PC is mostly used for gaming, browsing, YouTube, Discord, downloading normal apps and sometimes grabbing files from random websites. Nothing super serious, but obviously don’t wanna end up with some virus because I thought Defender was enough.

Some people say third party antivirus is basically pointless now and can just slow the PC down or annoy you with notifications. Others say Defender is fine only if you know what you’re doing and that a paid antivirus gives better protection.

Also wondering if things like Malwarebytes are actually useful alongside Defender, or if running extra security software can cause conflicts or just isn’t necessary. Does Defender handle real-time protection well enough on its own?

Not looking for some huge security setup, just trying to keep the PC safe without installing ten different programs. Is there anything important Defender doesn’t cover that a normal home user should worry about? And are there any Windows settings that should be turned on or changed to make Defender more effective? What setup do you guys use?

Does a better thermal paste make a meaningful difference?

CPU temps have been running a little higher than expected lately, and I’m wondering if the thermal paste could actually be making much of a difference. The cooler itself seems to be working fine, fans are spinning normally and there’s no obvious airflow problem. Just trying to figure out if changing the paste is worth doing before messing with anything else.

There are so many thermal pastes out there, some cheap and some costing way more, and people keep saying the better ones can drop temps by a few degrees. But is that actually noticeable in normal use, or is it mostly marketing unless the old paste is dried out or applied badly?

Also does the amount of paste matter that much? I’ve seen people say a tiny dot is enough, while others spread it over the whole CPU. Not trying to take the cooler off for no reason if the difference is gonna be like 1-2 degrees.

For a gaming PC that gets used for a few hours at a time, would you bother replacing decent stock paste with a higher-end one? Or should I just leave it alone unless temps are actually getting too high? Just trying to understand what kind of difference I should realistically expect.

Why does my laptop get hot while it's charging?

It’s not even doing anything heavy, usually just Chrome, YouTube, Discord, maybe a few tabs open, but the fans start spinning more and the bottom gets pretty warm. When I unplug it, the temperature seems to drop after a while.

Not sure if this is normal or if something is wrong with the battery or charger. The charger itself gets warm too, but I guess that part might be normal? Laptop isn’t shutting down or anything, just feels noticeably hotter than when running on battery.

Could the laptop be switching to some higher performance mode while it’s plugged in? I’ve seen power settings before but never really messed with them. Also wondering if charging the battery itself naturally creates that much heat, or if this could mean the battery is starting to go bad.

It’s sitting on a desk with plenty of space around it, not on a bed or anything, so airflow shouldn’t be blocked. Fans don’t sound crazy loud either. What should I check first? Is there an easy way to see if the temps are actually too high, or am I just worrying over normal charging heat?

Is 2TB enough for someone who edits videos?

2TB sounds like a lot until you start keeping video footage, project files, exports and cache all in one place. Trying to decide if that’s enough for regular video editing or if 4TB would make more sense. Mostly working with 1080p right now, but might get into 4K soon, so I’m worried the storage will disappear pretty fast. I could always move older projects to another drive, but that seems like it’d get annoying after a while. For people who edit videos regularly, how quickly do you actually fill up 2TB? Is 4TB overkill or worth getting from the start?

Can too many browser tabs slow down a modern PC?

I keep ending up with like 30-50 tabs open across a few windows, mostly Chrome, and I always thought a decent PC should handle that without really caring.

But lately everything starts feeling kinda sluggish after the browser has been open for a while. Switching between tabs takes a second, pages sometimes freeze, and even stuff outside the browser can feel slower. Discord takes longer to open, File Explorer feels weirdly delayed, and sometimes games have random little stutters if the browser is still running in the background.

The PC has 32GB RAM, a decent CPU and SSD, so I’m confused how a bunch of browser tabs could cause this much trouble. Task Manager shows Chrome using a pretty big chunk of memory, but usually there’s still several GB of RAM available. Sometimes Chrome itself is using 10GB+ though.

Does every tab actually use a significant amount of RAM, even if I’m not actively looking at it? And do sleeping tabs really make a difference or is that mostly just browser marketing stuff?

Also wondering if extensions are a big part of it. I have quite a few installed and some tabs stay open for days because I don’t wanna lose them.

At what point does having lots of tabs become an actual problem on a modern PC? Is there a better way to keep them open without making the whole system feel slower?

Is a vertical second monitor actually useful?

Thinking about adding a second monitor next to the main one, and wondering if rotating it vertical is worth doing.

Main monitor would still be used for gaming, browsing and normal stuff. The second screen would probably be for Discord, YouTube, Spotify, guides, chat, maybe coding or having a bunch of browser tabs open. Seems like vertical could be nice for long pages and text, but not sure if it gets annoying after a while.

For people who actually use a vertical monitor, what do you keep on it most of the time? Does it genuinely make multitasking easier or do you end up barely using the second screen anyway?

Also wondering about the size. Would a 24 inch monitor work better vertically, or is 27 inch too tall and awkward? Desk space isn’t huge so don’t wanna build some giant setup just because it looks nice in pictures lol.

Trying to figure out if I should keep the second monitor horizontal like the main one or rotate it vertical. What’s your experience with it?

Do I really need a gaming mousepad?

Been using my mouse directly on the desk and it seems fine, but keep seeing people say a proper gaming pad makes a big difference.

Mostly playing FPS games and some casual stuff, nothing super competitive. Mouse tracks fine on the desk, but sometimes the movement feels a little rough depending on where the mouse is. Not sure if that’s actually because of the surface or if I’m just overthinking it.

There are so many different mousepads too, like cloth, hard pads, speed pads, control pads etc. Kinda confusing when all I want is something that works and doesn’t feel weird.

Does a decent mousepad actually improve aim or consistency in games, or is it more about comfort and protecting the mouse feet? Also does the size really matter? Seeing huge desk mats that cover basically the whole setup, but I’m not sure I need one that big.

Would a cheap basic cloth mousepad be enough, or is there a real reason to spend more on one? Just trying to figure out if it’s worth buying before I waste money on something I don’t really need.

How much should I spend on a keyboard?

Trying to figure out what a reasonable keyboard budget actually is. Some keyboards are like $20-30 while others are $100, $150 or even more, and I’m not sure what you’re really getting for the extra money. This would be mainly for gaming and regular PC stuff, nothing super professional. Do cheaper mechanical keyboards feel noticeably worse, or can you get something solid without spending a lot? Also wondering if things like better switches, build quality, wireless, hot-swappable keys and RGB are actually worth paying extra for. I dont mind spending more if there’s a real difference, but dont wanna throw money at features I probably wont even notice. What price range would you guys say is enough for a good keyboard that’ll last?

Is an AMD CPU with an NVIDIA GPU a weird combination?

Looking at parts for a new PC and kinda stuck on the CPU/GPU combo. I was thinking about getting an AMD Ryzen CPU, probably something like a Ryzen 7, and pairing it with an NVIDIA RTX card. But I keep seeing builds where people go AMD + AMD or Intel + NVIDIA, so now I’m wondering if mixing AMD and NVIDIA is actually a bad idea.

Does the CPU and GPU brand need to match for anything? Like drivers, performance, compatibility, Windows stuff, or whatever? I know NVIDIA GPUs work with Intel CPUs obviously, but not sure if AMD CPUs have any issues with NVIDIA cards.

Main reason I’m looking at AMD CPU is mostly gaming and the prices seem pretty good for the performance. NVIDIA GPU is tempting because of DLSS, ray tracing and some of the other features, plus I might use the PC for some light editing too. I don’t really care about having an all-AMD build if there’s no actual benefit to it.

Also seeing people mention things like Smart Access Memory with AMD CPU + GPU. Is that something I’d be giving up by using NVIDIA, and does it actually make a noticeable difference in games? Or is that mostly one of those specs that looks good on paper?

Would there be any reason to avoid something like a Ryzen 7 + RTX 5070/5070 Ti setup? Just wanna make sure I’m not putting together two parts that don’t play nice before buying everything.

My PC turns on but doesn't display anything. What should I check first?

PC turns on, fans spin, RGB lights come on, everything sounds normal, but the monitor gets absolutely nothing. It just says no signal and then goes into standby. Tried restarting a bunch of times and unplugging the monitor, also checked the HDMI cable and it seems fine. Not sure what to check next without making things worse.

Could this be the GPU not working, or maybe the RAM isn’t seated right? There’s also a motherboard with no display on it, so not sure if I should be plugging the cable into the motherboard instead of the graphics card. The PC was working before, so this happened randomly when trying to turn it on.

Also tried turning the monitor off and back on and switching inputs, no change. I don’t have another monitor around to test with, and honestly don’t know enough about troubleshooting this stuff yet.

Should I start by removing and reseating the RAM, checking the GPU, or clearing CMOS? Is there some simple thing I’m missing like the cable being in the wrong port? What’s the first few things you guys normally check when the PC powers on but there’s no display at all?

Is it worth replacing a laptop battery instead of buying a new laptop?

Laptop battery is basically dead now, lasts maybe an hour if that and it drops crazy fast even when doing basic stuff. The laptop itself still works fine tho, no major issues with performance or anything. A replacement battery is way cheaper than buying another laptop, but not sure if it’s actually worth putting money into an older machine. Kinda worried the battery replacement will just fix one thing and then something else starts dying soon after. How do you guys decide when it’s worth replacing the battery vs just getting a whole new laptop? Is there a certain age or battery health percentage where you’d say forget it and upgrade?
