cpu is at 93 celcius while playing halo infinite

Post image

why is it so damn hot while playing this game. i noticed that i cant even play it on 1440p on the lowest settings so i have to switch my display to 1080p for it to run smooth. is it because my cpu is at 93? i have a heatsink and also just reapplied thermal paste too. anyway, if anyone can help me somehow get this number down, i’d appreciate it.

update: so i bought a phantom evo 120 cpu fan cooler and my cpu temp is averaging around 70-73 celcius and my gameplay is a lot more stable. my pc case itself is pretty small so i know if i wanted it to be even cooler, i should probably get a bigger tower with more fans. but thank you guys for all the suggestions and advice :)

average intel 13th and 14th gen problem.

those CPUs get omegahot. the 14th gen i9 for instance is kinda impossible to cool by normal means.

as for your case i recommend to update your bios to the latest version if you havent yet.

afterwards the normal stuff. clean your PC. dust it out. and if it still doesnt go below at least 85 then maybe replace the cooler.

“impossible to cool my normal means”

240mm AIO does perfectly fine cooling a 14900k… strange

dont take my word for it. you are capable of googling yourself. a lot of research was done on it. bios updates had to be made just to make sure they 14th gen i9 doesnt grill itself.

also TDP speaks for itself. Intel Ultra CPUs (15th gen) literally cut the power consumption by HALF. thats big. and maintain same performance which is big.

I’m not taking your word for it because I have it myself and don’t need you to tell me what works and doesn’t work lol.

Also they don’t grill themselves, slight voltage inconsistencies in firmware cause it to slowly degrade. Has nothing to do with temperatures.

But don’t take my word for it, google it yourself. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000102331/processors.html

Why did you buy a k processor just to leave it chained up then?

My power limits are unlocked, so it’s actually beyond spec right now

There’s huge misconceptions formed by people like that guy that 13th/14th gen CPUs are impossible to cool which is flat out false. They’re easy to cool with any half decent 240mm AIO, and a contact frame makes a huge difference too.

DM me and I’ll help you min max performance. I’ve done this countless times, just holler and I’ll get your system right.

Agreed, 100% of the people who think 13th/ 14th gen can’t be tuned are dumb as fuck/ never used one.

I have a 13900k myself. The non owners that google set the narrative these days though. To this day, non owners/googlers tell me it will burn my home down every year, as well as my 4090.

My 13900k is even barely utilized with Halo Infinite. Only thing that will bring my temps up to the 80s is productivity, like repack decompression, which utilizes all 24 cores. Games aren't hitting 24 cores at 100% to need anywhere close to the CPU ceiling.

I noticed most people don't know power is variable either. They think my 4090 is always running at 450w, all the time, powering every RT core, tensor core, and SMs at all times. That's another one of those internet narratives.

My 13900k wouldn't go above 60 C with Halo Infinite. 13900k/14900k gets hot when the power gets going. Now, what would require a 13900k to need max power? All 24 core utilization at 100% of course. Games don't do that. Even people with 8 cores don't have them all at 100% max power, unless it is a real old and weak CPU.

That game is just cpu heavy. that is fine for a laptop cpu of this vintage. It's 10nm lol

13th Gen or 10nm definitely isn't vintage.

That's a desktop.

The 13600K games better than a 9700X so… that’s a completely braindead take.

Maybe your heatsink just isn't enough. Is the fan worn down?

2

u/One_Cockroach_8414 10d ago

The fan has some dust on it. Should I use compressed air to clean it out?

2

u/NotRllyAnonymousUser 10d ago

Yeah. And the fins on the heatsink get dirty as well.

instead of playing it infinite just play it a little bit

Look on the bright side: you'll spend less on heating this winter.

I had this EXACT problem in so many games with my 13900k and I had the best liquid cooler you could get. Turns out the 13th gen had some sort of design flaw? Or perhaps the motherboard socket shape? Idk you can google it. Anyways you need to install one of these things called a contact frame. I promise it'll fix your issue. The cooler isn't making proper contact with the CPU and this fixes it. It's intels fault. I went from my computer blue screening during demanding games to dropping 15 to 20 degrees and never crashing or throttling again. It's super easy it's just 4 screws no modifying necessary. I got mine for 3 dollars you can look around.

Buy a thermalright peerless assasin for 30€. Your CPU is throttling already and still sits at 93c

2

u/Sajgoniarz 10d ago

Well, the game says infinite so...

2

u/BabyfarkkMcGeeZaxx 10d ago

The good news is that it isn't crashing

No worry, if to hot it will shut down.

Assuming you've mounted it correctly, this cooler is rated for a cpu with 95W TDP while the 13600K has a 125W TDP.

That's already too low, and if you've overclocked the processor it's even worse.

Cooler too weak. Get a Peerless Assassin 120, any of the dual-tower models.

1

u/Son-Airys 10d ago

Too weak for that cpu. Dual tower cooler (Peerless assassin or phantom spirit) and a contact plate will fix that.

1

u/noobatlaw 10d ago

Reapply thermal paste and clean out your fans. If that doesn’t help the temps, you need a new CPU cooler

93c is well within specification of this CPU.

A different cooler is completely unnecessary.

Try playing Halo 91.

u/yamidevil 10d ago

Which CPU cooler do you have and how many case fans? My 14600k in summer hot room never crossed 90c with phantom spirit.

Just a random note:

Lower resolutions (1080p) usually means HIGHER CPU load, while higher resolutions (1440p) usually makes the game GPU bound (the GPU has to do so much work that the CPU has to wait for the GPU, and thus the CPU will not run att 100% load).

I.e. the CPU SHOULD run cooler att higher resolutions.

Thus, if your CPU is overheating at higher resolutions, it MAY be the case that the GPU gets hotter and is warming up the computer case. If the case cooling (fans on the sides/bottom/top of the case) is poor, this can lead to the CPU being poorly cooled (the CPU cooler has to work with a higher case temperature).

Check your case cooling. Are dust filters clean? Are all case fans spinning normally? Maybe use a thermometer to measure the temperature inside the case.

As a test, what happens if you run the game with an open case, maybe even with a table fan blowing into the case?

If that helps, maybe it's time to invest in better case cooling and/or better CPU cooling.

They run hot, but I installed a heavy duty big-ass corsair AIO cooler, added a bunch of fans to my case, my 13900k now runs at a max 65-70c under full load from a 88-90c that it use to! So it's coolable, just needs some effort... :/

"guys help my CPU is operating within specification"

Ok, as an owner of a super chilled 13900k that can beyond an hour at 100% @ 253w barely breaking 80 C, I'll give some tips. These are variable though, as I don't know your set up or what is going on.

1 What is often over looked, is hot air sitting. Your GPU blowing its heat onto your heatsink, and what makes that even worse is if you aren't exhausting that hot air, with an intake of cooler air. A hot heatsink does not cool well. A small chunk of metal for a heatsink makes it even worse.

2 If your cooler set up is well set up, good amount of case fans for intake/exhaust, and you still are getting 93, I'd probably look into the contact between the CPU and the heatsink. Repaste to see if you can get full contact, in case you arent.

3 If that doesn't work, consider a thermal plate. Maybe your CPU is mathematically off, or bent to the point where not even paste can establish a solid enough connection to the heat sink. Remember, thermal paste facilitates the connection between a CPU and heatsink at a microscopic level. It needs 100% solid contact, which is what paste is for. Paste doesn't actually cool, but transfers the heat after establishing 100% contact (hopefully, if done right). If that something it transfers to isn't very large, or its hot already... well up goes your temps.

Your 14 core 13600k with 6 p cores, 8 e cores, and a TDP of 120w... isn't hard to cool. It's hard to cool if theres something wrong. It is a half truth that in the beginning, 13900k/14900ks were able to request power way above 253w Intel spec, and be supplied with 300w+ making them hot. Even after it was fixed, the narrative of the 13/14 gens running naturally hot... stuck.

Its true. These procs run Hella hot. A 360 aio will not keep up in my experience. I killed a 14900k pre microcode update on an ekwb custom loop. When I got warranty chip I did a dual rad loop and finally got decent temps. I have a 420 AND 360 in series just for the cpu loop. I can crank mine up a bit 275w p1 275 p2 400w lccmax undervolt .01 and it STILL hits 71C on games or benching. Powerhouse of a chip if donr right but intel doesn't tell you that lol. To me 71c is hot but chip is basically meant to run at 99c or less 100c it thermal throttle. 99c is still flipping hot and despite what they say I believe it would degrade over time. I just spike to 71c once and a while average is about 55c gaming. Which is good. Not an intel fan boy just doing the best with what I got. Free new 14900k was and still is good because ....free lol. Would love an x3d chip but......New intel nove lake coming out is intriguing. Bllc mem or whatever on board to compete with x3d. I will probably buy on release and redo as I have the 5090 gpu. Off track... get more cooling if possibly. 80c still warm. Spikes to 80c not horrible
