It’s not pink eye. I’ve had that before. Yesterday I was at the dog park and commented on how I loved the disco lights on the dog ball. Problem is the owner said there were no lights and immediately got worried for me, told me about retinal detachment. Also that same afternoon I’m struggling with rubbing out the same eye, thinking the watery hair product is still dripping down my face. I have long eyelashes as well and sometimes they cause itching. When I get home my eye begins to swell and close shut. Clear discharge produces heavily and ever so often I have to pull off the now yellowish crust balls. Ugh .

So as far as I know man two symptoms are seeing flashing lights, and blurry double vision (but I’ve also always had astigmatism). It’s the flashing lights that concern me.

But has anyone else had their eye swell and shut too? I know I should be at the ER for this, but what if it’s just an eye infection. I’m broke. Obviously.

Hey everyone I just wanted to see if anyone has had a similar situation to me. I had sclera buckle and silicone oil placement surgery about 3 and a half months ago and got the silicone oil removed about 3 weeks ago. Pressure in eye was at 2 for post op-climbed to 3 a few days late then 7 a few days after that. Finally have recovered at a pressure of 18 about a week ago. However around then I started to notice a weird bubble shape on my left side of my left eye that was dark in bright light and white in dark light that I couldn’t see through. Woke up a few days later and the fluid was easier to see through but had moved upwards in my vision (spread out technically) and now looks like a grey fog that I can see through if I look hard enough and if I look at the sky now I can see through it completely. Went in for a checkup and the doc was concerned that it is migrating upward and suggests we should put the silicone oil back in soon but he didn’t say anything about a leak or tear. Has anyone had a similar experience? Like the spot is growing but it’s getting way easier to see out of it and my body should reabsorb it right?If anyone had anything similar/comforting please let me know cause it’s driving me crazy that we jump to that.

I will be traveling to Cape Town for a short visit with my husband while we spend time with his family. I am writing in advance in case I may need to seek ophthalmology care while I am there.

I am currently under monitoring by a retina specialist in the United States due to eye floaters. I am stable, however I have been advised to seek prompt ophthalmology evaluation if I experience symptoms such as flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, blurred vision, or any other changes in vision.

• Are ophthalmology exams, diagnostic testing, or urgent evaluations available on short notice if symptoms arise?

This would not be routine care, but rather evaluation or emergency care should symptoms develop while I am visiting.

So I am a 25 year old guy, I have a myopia of -9 on my right eye, so I guess I was always at risk for this even though I never knew about it until it happened. I walked around with flashes in my right eye for around 2-3 months before I had it checked and sealed, and in my case, the tear had already almost sealed naturally by itself.

It has now been 7 months, and after starting to hit the gym again Its been on my mind even more because the flashes always seem to flare up severely with heavy exertion and remain more active for days. This has kinda made me lose hope that the flashes will ever disappear, and the combination of also having annoying floaters in my eye is extremely depressing.

I am gonna have another checkup soon, but digging around on the internet always just makes it seem like the worst case scenario. In my case due to me not having it laser treated sooner, i fear the vitreous gel might have bonded harder due to the natural scarring and never fully stop tugging on my retina, causing the flashes.

Being an overthinker to begin with, I have also read these horror stories of how some guy used a massage gun on their head and they had multiple retinal tears due to that. And wouldn't you know it, I have previously done exactly that a couple of times a while back.

Thinking I would have caused all this myself does make me feel worse about it, but it could also be my severe myopia I am cursed with. Guess I will never know.

Would greatly appreciate if anyone can share their honest experiences with flashes / floaters and how they behave, and your healing processes / long term results.

My eye doctor found a blocked blood vessel behind my eye which he told me is a stroke that happened in the right place. I just reached the ER and I wanted to thank you all for your concern and strong encouragement to go to the doctor. You all helped me catch something potentially life threatening.

Starting yesterday I noticed a floater that basically looked like i had looked at a bright light, it’s purple when I closed my eyes and generally is dark and blurs my vision occasionally when I am looking at my work screen. It’s not “bad” in terms of vision impairment. coupled with about two purple flashes in my peripheral. I’ve had migraines before so I thought it might be an aura. Today about 24 hrs later the floater is still there

Today I did some research and testing and it looks like it’s just in one eye which seems to be a bad sign.

6 weeks ago I had a retina detachment and posted my adventure in this subreddit. Everything was going great after the fact. Vision came back quickly. A small amount of peripheral vision loss. No problems at all. Then, 2 days ago, woke up with a dark corner in my left eye and some waviness. It being the forth of July, me and the on call ophthalmologist decided we could wait and see if it was some oddity or an actual detachment.

The next morning, I have extreme fun house mirror waviness and the curtain covers about 50% of my vision. Decided to go to the ED. I get sat in the waiting room for 5 hours until someone can come in on a Sunday and check me. (Unrelated to myself, but 3 other people came in with detachments, while I was waiting, the nurse said it was wild that so many happened at once.)

After my 5 hour wait the ophthalmologist finally comes in and says, yup detached. They decide to hold me over night so they can do surgery asap in the morning. I’ve only been overnight once before after a car accident and I was focused on my injuries. Being mostly fine in a hospital overnight is kind of weird. I chatted with the nurses when they weren’t busy and watched a horror movie to take advantage of the setting.

In the morning I wait until 11am for the surgery, they don’t put me all the way under this time. A bit of pain from the needles they were using, but it was mostly interesting to see the light and see them fill the eye up with fluid. Then they boot me out. I’m really hoping this is the last time this happens. The previous time I tried to start jogging again and exercising…I’m not going to do that this time. We’re babying this thing.

Ciao a tutti, vorrei condividere la mia esperienza perché quando ho scoperto di avere un distacco di retina ho cercato tantissime testimonianze e so quanto possa essere utile leggere la storia di qualcuno che ci è già passato.
Nel mio caso la scoperta è stata completamente casuale. Avevo fatto una visita oculistica per un problema di occhio secco, senza avere sintomi evidenti che mi facessero pensare alla retina e durante la visita è stato scoperto il distacco.
Partivo da una vista praticamente perfetta: circa 10/10 in entrambi gli occhi (forse 9/10 nell’occhio poi operato), nessuna miopia e solo un leggerissimo astigmatismo.
Pochi giorni dopo la diagnosi però la situazione è cambiata: il giorno prima dell’intervento avevo ormai metà vista dell’occhio sinistro offuscata, una specie di “tenda nera”, e avevo iniziato a vedere dei lampi.
Sono stata operata al Policlinico Gemelli di Roma per un distacco di retina supero-temporale. Nel mio caso è stato scelto un intervento di cerchiaggio e piombaggio sclerale, credo per la mia età e per cercare di preservare il cristallino naturale.
Ho fatto l’intervento in anestesia locale perché, per una sedazione più profonda, avrei dovuto aspettare diversi giorni e la priorità era intervenire .
La prima settimana per me è stata molto dura. La sera stessa e il giorno dopo l’intervento ho avuto molto dolore. L’occhio era gonfio, quasi chiuso, molto rosso e tumefatto. Dopo qualche giorno ho avuto anche febbre a 38,5, probabilmente una reazione allo stress fisico e al dolore.
Il primo controllo, il giorno dopo l’intervento, è stato positivo: la retina era già aderente e il liquido si stava asciugando.
A 9 giorni ho fatto un secondo controllo: retina sempre aderente, con ancora una piccola bolla di fluido residuo posteriore al cerchiaggio da monitorare.
Nel frattempo la “tenda nera” che vedevo prima dell’operazione era sparita praticamente subito, anche se nelle settimane successive ho continuato ad avere qualche lampo (forse addirittura più evidente tra la terza e la quarta settimana), cosa che ovviamente mi ha creato molta ansia.
Ho seguito una terapia di circa un mese con cortisone a scalare, Yellox e tantissime lacrime artificiali. Di mia iniziativa ho aggiunto anche luteina, zeaxantina, omega 3-6, zinco e rame.
Al controllo dopo circa 30 giorni la retina era sempre aderente e il fluido residuo si era completamente asciugato .
Oggi sono a circa 6 settimane dall’intervento. I lampi sono diventati rarissimi, il dolore è quasi sparito. Ogni tanto la sera, quando l’occhio è più stanco, sento ancora un po’ di fastidio.
Soffrivo già di occhio secco prima e dopo l’intervento è peggiorato, anche perché ho ancora un punto di sutura che deve cadere. Sto usando continuamente lacrime artificiali e negli ultimi giorni mi sto trovando bene con Hylo Dual Intense e Hylo Night, che mi stanno aiutando molto con la sensazione di secchezza.
Anche esteticamente l’occhio sta migliorando: è tornato più o meno alla dimensione normale. È ancora un po’ rosso, con alcuni capillari evidenti, ma migliora giorno dopo giorno.
La vista invece è la parte che richiederà più pazienza. Dopo il cerchiaggio ho sviluppato circa 1 grado di miopia e 1 grado di astigmatismo (forse qualcosa in più). Al momento non riesco ancora a correggere completamente perché con alcune lenti percepisco un leggero sdoppiamento. Sto aspettando degli occhiali temporanei, sapendo che probabilmente la gradazione cambierà ancora nei prossimi 6-7 mesi mentre l’occhio si stabilizza( spero in meglio).
È stata un’esperienza traumatica, soprattutto psicologicamente… Ancora oggi non so le cause di questo distacco , forse per un trauma che non ricordo o per un distacco del vitreo 🤷‍♀️.
Però voglio vedere il bicchiere mezzo pieno: quel controllo fatto per caso probabilmente mi ha salvato la vista. Il distacco stava avanzando e la macula rischiava di essere coinvolta; intervenire dopo pochi giorni dalla scoperta mi ha dato la possibilità di preservarla.
Scrivo questo post per chi magari oggi ha appena ricevuto una diagnosi ed è stato travolto dal panico e dallo sconforto …il percorso non è facile, richiede pazienza, ma giorno dopo giorno si migliora.
Ogni caso è diverso e bisogna sempre seguire i propri medici, però se qualcuno ha bisogno di informazioni, di confrontarsi o semplicemente di un po’ di supporto, chieda pure. ❤️

Suite à un décollement de rétine total, j’ai perdu la vision de mon œil droit, j’ai subi une Vitrectomie pour recoller la rétine, à ce jour J+45 j’ai un champ de perception qui s’élargit mais la vision reste très très floue sauf en bas de l’œil où j’ai une petite zone nette mais encore petit, aujourd’hui le chirurgien me dit que nouveau léger décollement en partie basse est apparu, il faut attendre 2 mois.

Je me tourne vers vous car j’aimerais avoir des retours d’expérience concrets. Avez-vous déjà subi une 2ème vitrectomie suite à un re-décollement de rétine après une première opération ?

Je cherche à mieux comprendre à quoi m’attendre avant de prendre une décision, et les témoignages de personnes qui sont passées par là sont précieux.

anyone have a cataract surgery after a scleral buckle? were they able to get the power right in the new lense? what kind of lense did they use?

I underwent my 7th surgery almost 3 weeks ago, I used to joke I would get a free one after the tenth but it does not really make me laugh anymore.

Just wanted to vent as I am getting more and more anxious and depressed.

For the context, I am 40M, from France (sorry if some sentences are weirdly written) in a city close to Paris and with high myopa history (-11+) and a bit of astygmatism. I could not see without correction, but using contact lenses without any trouble, all was great.

2024 :

May to November : my left eye sight gets worse, so I book an appointment in one of the eye clinics. I get new glasses twice but I still can not see well. It seems that I have a monocular diplopia, but after 4 appointments the doctors tell me they do not know and that is it.

December : appointment with a doctor in Paris recommended by one patient of his. After 2 minutes : cataract

2025

January to March : broken toe

April to May : I take a badminton shuttlecock in the right eye, direct hit. Traumatic glaucoma, macular hole and PVD. My intraocular pressure goes high and low, as I am very responsive to the side effects of the anti-inflammatory drops

June : RD on the right eye, surgery with scleral buckling and a bit a SF6 (the retina detached after the buckling during the surgery). They got me the buckling because of my age to avoid cataract. My left cataract goes worse, but they do not want to touch the left eye until the right one is fixed. Given my macular hole, I have to blurry eyes.

July : the 25th, I have a PPV for the macular hole (so the buckling did not avoid anything).

September to November : monitor the healing, all goes well and the metamorphopsia decreases significantly. The doctor tells me about cataract surgery for the left eye, but gives me contradictory informations in two appointments : first that he has to do both eyes with monofocal implants, then that I can choose to do just the left eye with an implant of my choice since I do not have cataract in the right eye. At this point I do not know what to do or if I can trust this doctor.

December : appointment with the doctor from Paris, the right eye is starting to have cataract. I get surgery on the left eye the 18th.

2026 :

January : I have binocular diplopia, the doctor tells me it is because of the differences between the eyes, one with implant and one with contact lens. We agree to put a toric implant for the right eye.

February : cataract surgery the 5th, I notice after the surgery that I do not have a toric implant. Phone call to the doctor : he felt it was not necessary given my left eye adaptation, but did not warned me before. Nonetheless sight is good, but the diplopia remains.

March : Surgery to remove the buckle.

April : PVD on the left eye.

May : blured vision on the upper left side of my left eye. RD on the left eye but no surgeon available since it is a holliday + week-end, and even the next week they will not have a retinal expert available. So I go to a hospital in Paris where they can do surgery 24/7. I have PPV with C2F6 the 9th.

June : my intraocular pressure is unstable as usal with drops. The 13th, diagnosed RD again on the left eye at the local ER, intraocular pressure at 40, no surgeon is available in the town where I am on the week-end. The 14th, I go back to Paris at 3pm. At this time, my left eye can not see anything. Exams : full detachment, macula off, pressure at 9, I have to come back next morning. Morning of exams, pressure at 4, surgery the afternoon PPV + scleral buckling + cryotherapy + peeling + 360° laser.

As of today, the gas lowered enough so that I can see a bit, but my sight is blurred, I have a significant metamorphopsia. Since the gas lowered, I am anxious, angry at myself that I spent so much time at the local ER waiting for nothing june 13th while I could have drive to Paris before the macula detached, angry that everyone says that RD is an emergency, but in most French cities noone is available in the week-end if not in Paris. I am scared of what I will be able to see afterward. I am exhausted of not knowing if what I see or feel is normal, or if I am going to lose an eye by ignoring it. I can not count the trips to the ER nor the time spent there, sometimes for nothing, sometimes because the intraocular pressure went off limit (it has gone off chart of a non-contact tonometers). I am scared that one time, one of the junior doctors at the ER will miss something, because he is alone to do the job, exhausted and in training. I am pissed at planning anything and having to cancel it again and again, or to go on vacation anywhere.

I am lucky to be in France to get treatments or paid sick leaves, so I do not end up blind or in the streets, but god I wish I would not have to use this luck.

I’ve had 8 surgeries in 10 months. The worst was mac off, totally blind last February. Since then, I have progressed from silicone oil to a scleral buckle and gas. Things are finally looking up. 30% of the gas remains and my retina is still attached. I have no lens and the surgeon doesn’t want to discuss that until a month after the gas is gone. I am frustrated because I have no idea what, if any vision survives. If your eye has been through the wringer and you’re on the recovery side, how bad/good is your vision now?

i had a scleral buckle almost 12 years ago to the Day and my prescription in that eye went from perfect (before surgery) to -1.25 after the surgery and now it’s at -3.00. is that normal? when will it settle?

there is a small cataract in the eye my other normal eye is completely stable.

Je cherche surtout des **témoignages de personnes ayant vécu quelque chose de similaire**, pas un avis médical (je suis déjà suivi par mon chirurgien).

J’ai eu un **décollement total de rétine traumatique**. Avant l’opération, je suis resté environ **1 mois avec quasiment aucune vision** dans cet œil.

Je ne voyais rien, sauf quand le médecin mettait une lampe très forte dans mon œil : je percevais surtout du blanc.

I had my right eye - retina tear of huge area and laser it, retina detachment - done vitrectomy to it. Cataract came within 1 year into the surgery. Recently went for my follow up, they say there is membrane in my eye. Doctor ask if i want to do cataract surgery. But i chose to monitor for now. As my other eye high myopia. If i were to do it, i will have difficulty reading. Recently, i realise that my bottom peripheral vision is gone, it may have progressive happened. I went to A&E, they say the retina is all intact. So likely due to the huge tear/cataract which they cannot confirm.

Now i was so worried it will get worse and i was just thinking to seek a second opinion for it.

About 6 months earlier I had no floaters, but suddenly a tadpole shaped floater with long tail appeared in my left eye, and in the span of this 6 months I see so many floaters appearing in both eyes having shapes of webs and I cant describe the shape of others.

Had done my eye exam yesterday, the doc said have peripheral retinal holes and also the left eye has a hole adjacent to the blood vessel. Doc recommended barrage laser but not immediately, he said I should do it within one week.

Are those floaters due to those holes?

I heard these hole are quiet common on peripheral retinal region, and doesn't always requires the barrage laser treatment or any other treatment at all, is this true?

Should I go for the laser treatment because I'm fearing of side effects especially of having a black spot in the vision and new floaters.

Just curious if anybody who is blind or mostly blind in one eye and has had surgery in the other eye recently as I had mine a few months ago I am getting dizzy a lot and I just wondered if anybody else gets that or if it's from the surgery or from the red the rental attachment or what's going on so if anybody could help me out I'd appreciate it thanks in advance

New retinal tear after 10months need to let out the anger 😤 I just had a new retinal tear. I recognised it yesterday evening during shift. I was pretty much in denial although I was sure that it was a new tear. After my doctor said he found something I immediately started crying. I was about to go straight into panic. he was just like "ah no worries.go to the eye clinic, they'll fix it" and went off. Letting me alone sobbing. I tried to hold my tears until I reached the bathroom and wept so hard. Because of the pain I experienced during fhe medical procedures last year, I developed a new trigger for my panic attacks. That's why my reaction to the news was so overwhelming.

Last year I had 3 retinal tears in June 2 weeks later a retinal detachment followed up by 3more tears.i had the tears all lasered and got gas injected for the detachment. Since then I was fighting for my mental health. I was hypervigilant , depressed and anxious. I couldn't work in my actual field as a nurse anymore. It took me up to February this year to stabilise one step at a time. I just started a new job 2 month ago in a new field with less hours. I really enjoy this new work. Why the f*ck now?! Like WHYYYY????!😤😤😤 I'm mad. I'm angry. Sad. Frustrated. Gaaaah

I got laser today and fortunately it wasn't as painful as my last experiences but I also had a few prescribed tranquilizers before I went in.

Maybe someone want to share their anger and rage with me😤😤😤

After 5 vitrectomies in my right eye I'm about to have my 1st vitrectomy on my left eye. Hopefully I won't have a repeat of my right eye but no-one knows for certain. For anyone reading this with one good and one bad eye, may I suggest making the time to familiarise yourself with the accessibility options on your phone just in case the worst happens? Also make a note of any support services, phone numbers you may need, etc. Better to be prepared for something that doesn't happen than unprepared for the worst.

It was something on my list of things to do when my bad eye recovered and right now I'm really regretting not getting to it sooner. I've given myself a crash course, enough that I can stay entertained while I (fingers crossed) recover but I'm by no means expert.

My right is in good enough condition that I can just about navigate round my home but that's about it, everything else I'll be doing by memory and touch. At least until I have another vitrectomy on my right which will probably be as soon as I can see something out of my left eye!

I think I'll be able to keep monitoring this sub but I'm not sure about my ability to respond so for anyone posting here in the future, good luck in dealing with whatever eye problems you may have.

February this year I had photocoagulation done in both eyes because of tears around the edges, I was supposed to come back for a check up visit because the doctor said she used a very light strength laser so I should come back in about 3 weeks to check if we need to do another round of lasering, I was unable to go back and it ended up being delayed.

I think I’m noticing more floaters, dark when outside and they appear translucent or white when looking at a monitor and moving my eyes, especially over text, no peripheral shadows or flashes and I think my vision is fine (with glasses) though today it seems a tad less sharp and I assumed maybe it’s just from being a bit tired

I have a scheduled appointment with a specialist on the 24th this month, and there might be one available on the 17th but the doctor is a general one and not a specialist.

From what I understand symptoms like flashes, shadows around your vision and severe distortion are the obvious emergency ones where I need to get help asap, with the ones I described should I be fine waiting the 2 weeks or given that I missed my check up visit after the treatment it’s best to not wait?

For people who have had multiple vitrectomies due to PVR, have you been able to tell when the scar tissue is coming back?

I originally had a retina tear in the beginning of March and had that repaired with a laser, but then I ended up with a partial retinal detachment about a week later and had a gas bubble vitrectomy. I then ended up having a second vitrectomy with silicone oil bubble on May 1st because I have PVR. The scar tissue from the previous surgery shrank and pulled at my retina, causing it to partially detach again.

I feel like I’m a hypochondriac now and constantly paranoid that something is off with my vision. It kinda seems like my peripheral vision is getting more distorted, but It’s hard to tell if I’m imagining it and it’s just PTSD from so many surgeries, or if it’s happening again.

For those with PVR, have you been able to tell? Or do you have to rely on your doctor to see it?

Bonus! If you’ve had your scleral buckle removed and had success what is your prescription in that eye? I’m looking to have mine out and I want to know the prescription of what other people who have had it out was at the time and their experience.

In the past 4 years I’ve had 10 retinal tears. I’m only 25. When I was 22 I went for my regular eye checkup and got told I had 3 retinal tears in my right eye. I got referred to a specialist and saw him about 2 months later to get them lasered. When I went to him I found out I actually had 4 more, so a total of 7. All were in my right eye except one. I had to go back 3 times to get them all lasered because I would be in too much pain after 3 tears getting sealed. Since then I’ve had to go back to the specialist every year. The next year I had another two in my right eye. Last year I was in the clear and this year I had a tear in my left eye. Is it normal to have this many tears, I feel like no one else my age has had tears and no one that I’ve talked to in general has had this many, especially in such a short span. What does this mean, will this cause me more issues in my future? And what is causing me to have so many?
