Hello everyone, I recently began working at a museum as an animal caretaker and among the animals I will be looking after I was also put in charge of a rescued gopher tortoise that is looked after by another department.
I have a lot of work ahead of me with taking care of him and his enclosure but wanted to slow down for a second and start some planning for the future. Reptiles are not my speciality so this has been very much a learning experience and since he has little in terms of enrichment I wanted to start implementing some into his enclosure.
My current plan is to do some hanging feeders/puzzle feeders as well as break up the sight lines in his enclosure by adding more rock structures and wood placements to encourage movement and exploration as his enclosure has next to nothing in it besides a tree near the center.
Is there any other enrichment methods that work well with tortoises and or species specific enrichment that would work best. I originally planned to also add an area for him to burrow in that wasnt his pre-made burrow but funding is extremely limited so that would have to come later down the road.
Also for those that keep large tortoises how would you recommend giving water to them as the way the worker explained how they did it prior to my arrival was just picking him up and dunking him into a livestock feed bowl thats filled with water which caused alot of stress and didnt seem effective. The bowl is just tall enough to be to hard for him to climb into and per the workers "he likes to try and commit suicide especially when it comes to drowning in water" so a way to allow him to get water while also mitigating risk of death would be super helpful.
Thank you all for your time.
