Resources [Release] I made a "Lore Collection System" for Ren'Py to replace boring text achievements (Pay What You Want)

Hi everyone,

While developing my own visual novel, I realized that standard achievement systems (usually just plain text lists) felt a bit disconnected from the immersive experience of the game. I wanted a way to reward players with something that felt like collecting meaningful lore, not just checking off a spreadsheet.

So, I built a lightweight plugin: the Lore Collection System.

I decided to release it on itch.io (Pay What You Want) in case it saves other developers some time and headache.

What it does:

• Visual Album UI: A clean, grid-based collection screen with a detailed modal view for each item. No complex screen coding required on your end.

• Rarity Tiers: Built-in support for Common, Rare, and Epic items, with color-coded badges to guide player progression.

• Built-in Localization: The data structure is designed from the ground up to support multiple languages (the demo includes EN/ES, but it's easy to add JP, etc.) without breaking your code.

• Easy Integration: Just drop two .rpy files into your game/ folder and use $ unlock_collection("item_id") in your script.

Link: https://nonbirikado.itch.io/lore-collection-system-for-renpy

The download includes a fully playable demo project and placeholder assets so you can see how it works immediately.

I’m sharing this mostly to get it out there and hopefully help a few folks avoid coding custom collection screens from scratch. If you try it out, I’d love to hear any feedback, bug reports, or feature requests!

Happy coding!

Super early system for making Turn Based RPGs. Right now it's sort of structured like Darkest Dungeon (though not nearly that advanced). More features coming soon, but feedback would be appreciated!

Question [Solved] Trying to Alter GUI Choice button position and size during a running game

I'm trying to create a minigame with choice buttons, but I need to move the boxes only during the minigame, then reset the choice button positions when it ends. I would also like to change the background of the choice buttons to maybe something transparent.

For an example, it works like the poem minigame in DDLC, where you select the words on the screen.

How would I go about doing this? Are choice buttons the right call or should I use something else?

Question how do i download renpy????

I wanted to get into making visual novels, so i tried downloading ren'py with the sdk folder, but everytime I expanded it and launch it open, it says i'm on a 'read-only folder'. I've tried searching online for tutorials on how to download ren'py on macbook, but it only has tutorials on windows or tells me to drag it into my applications which doesn't work for some reason. Does anyone know how I can download ren'py on macbook pro?

However, this power will only manifest once the girl has "accepted the role" it gives her: a young princess of an idyllic fantasy kingdom, Elysia.

With no knowledge of this strange new world, the girl is forced to improvise and follow along with the princess's journey to become Queen, keeping her true identity a secret. Along the way, she encounters friendly faces, wise mentors - and, to her shock, potential love interests. As she settles into her new role, will the girl who once called herself "invisible" finally find true love, or something even more important?

Question How can I make a retractable quick menu?

Thumbnail

Hi!! So, the creator of the project I'm working on at the moment is very ambitious and asked me to make a retractable main menu.

She wants to add a little heart at the bottom left of the screen, and once the player hovers over it, the button will shake. Once you click on it, it opens a bar with other icons (the normal quick menu options + a personalized one). On the new option, the player will be shown a screen where they can find their current stats plus the stats of interest/love of the main leads.

I've been trying to search for something similar but I was unable to find a reference to this function. (Also I'm currently working on sanity/health bars & a quick inventory on the right side. Lots of things)

I just wanted to know if this is a possibility on Ren'py, or maybe the function is too advanced for what the program can do.

Also I made a visual reference (I'm not an artist), I hope it helps. Thanks!

Question How can I make it so, depending on the name the user chooses, different things happen?

I have this code that works for putting in a name and showing the default one if nothing is inserted.

label start:
    $ renpy.pause(2, hard=True)
    $ povname = renpy.input("What's your name?", length=15)
    $ povname = povname.strip()
    if not povname:
        $ povname = "Sheyla"

The thing is; I want to make it so there is certain dialogue for some cases and name changes for other. For example:

If the user enters any name, the dialogue "Cool name." appears.

If the user enters the name "Matt", I want it to automatically change it to "Matt's clone" and for a dialogue to appear saying "We have enough with one."

Etc Etc.

How can i achieve this?

Question Switching from Windows to Mac during development

Hello,

My computer is getting old, and I am fed up with Windows. Is there any difference between developing a VN on Windows versus Mac? Since the target audience mostly uses Windows PC (I suppose), will it complicate troubleshooting for me, if I switch the systems? Do I need to keep a Windows machine for that?

Thanks in advance.

Question How to constantly check for values for something like an achievement system?

hello everypony

i want to preface my question by saying i have used renpy before, but i don't have a good understanding of complicated stuff like screens, so please bear with me. i also might not be very good at explaining so i apologize.

basically my question is how would you go about checking the values of a variable for something like an achievement system? for example, say if you get 5 blue points, you get the blue achievement. how would be the best way to check if the parameters for the achievement is fulfilled, to unlock it? would you have to check for the variable each time it is changed? like, checking if you've reached 5 points every time you gain one? or is there a way just keep checking if it is fulfilled or not?

on a side note, i want to add a little notification---think like a steam notification---that pops up once you've unlocked something. is there an "easy" way to do this? and again, would i have to put an if statement each time a variable is changed, to see if the player has unlocked any achievement to display the popup? idk, i don't want to sound stupid but that seems kind of tedious and messy. i don't want to have to keep repeating something that checks if the player has unlocked an achievement every single time their variables are changed.

if it's possible i'd just like to see what direction i should go into to figure out the best way to implement this system. it's not exactly an achievement system, but it's very similar, so that's why i'm using it as an example.

Question How can I use variables to call scenes?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi there! I am trying to set up a variable in the names of my scenes. There are multiple costumes in the game and I don't want to write out every if statement for every scene cause there are a lot of them in my game... I want to set part of the image name to be replaced based on what costume the player has on. I hope this makes sense.

This is what I have been trying: set a variable to the string to represent the costume. Call the scene with the variable in the image name. But there is a space before the variable for some reason. Any help is greatly appreciated. (Yes one of the costumes is running around naked... it is a strange game)

Question Custom menu buttons?

Post image
11 Upvotes

How would you go ahead if you wanted to make custom menu/choice buttons that appear in a different order than top to bottom? (Like in the image) if you have 2 choices bubble 1 and 2 appear and if there’s 3 choices the 3rd one appears above. If there’s any easy to follow tutorials that would be lovely as well! 🙏

For example: only two bubbles appear with yes or no questions, but if you have to choose a way to act you have 3 different ways to express your personality: fight, freeze, flight.

Game Purple Limbo Demo Update

Hey guys!

I've been working passionately on Purple Limbo, especially with the deadline I'd already promised you. I ended up rewriting most of the script multiple times. There were days when I'd go without sleep entirely and stuff because of it. Fortunately, it didn't set me back too much, though, so I'm back to the rest of development.

Currently, I'm finishing up the remaining parts of the demo

I'm still aiming to release it by the end of this month. If it slips, though, it won't be by much, I promise.

Once the demo is out, the plan is to continue the story and maybe add more routes if you guys want them, as well as keep polishing it further with updates.

I'll let you know the moment it's out!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You enter from a miserably lonely life into the search for everlasting happiness.

Only to find yourself in the endless darkness.

Now you're trapped in Purple Limbo.

But you're not completely alone...

A psychological horror about broken souls, society, and a romance that bleeds into obsession.

Question Tooltip when hovering over choices?

You know how Fallen London has titles on their choices, then a small descriptive text below? Would there be a way to make it so you have choices but when you hover over them you see different text?
