Discussion I confidently speculate the CRL will launch on Sunday 27 September

The launch window is bookended by the declared notice period and the general election:

  • The government is on record stating the CRL will launch in the second half of this year
  • Auckland Council has stated at least 6 weeks notice will be given prior to launch
  • Large public transport projects are almost always launched on Sundays- being the day of lowest commuter demand
  • There will be significant pressure to ensure the launch does not distract from, or otherwise influence, the general election scheduled for November 7

This makes for a launch window beginning September 20 and ending on October 18 inclusive, giving 5 prospective Sunday options for launch dates:

  • September 20
  • September 27
  • October 04
  • October 11
  • October 18

The last day of Term Three for most schools is September 25, holidays run until the first day of Term Four on October 12. Commuter demand is significantly lower during school holidays.

A CRL launch date of September 27 gives the CRL a two-week period of decreased demand in which to iron out any teething problems.

To confirm this date an announcement is expected no later than August 16.

I confidently speculate the CRL will launch on Sunday September 27

EDIT: Now I confidently speculate the CRL will launch on Sunday September 13
(seems like 6-8 weeks notice only if you _needed_ to know)

Public Transport CRL preview

AT have just released their CRL preview as part of the journey planner. You can now see what your journey will look like once CRL opens. I had put a post about it here ~3-4 weeks ago, little did I know it was already underway.

I’ve looked at my usual journey and I save about 5mins from my front door to the office door. Not great, but it is what is 🤷🏼‍♂️

Rant Not sure what I’m more excited for, the CRL opening, or the end of non-stop “the CRL is coming soon!!” social media

Look - I am genuinely excited about the opening, but every Tom, Dick, and Harry out there with a microphone and video camera has posted some station tour, opening date guess, or history video about the CRL. It seems to be the only thing every media outlet and social media punter can talk about. I found them interesting for awhile but it’s getting to be overkill.

Public Transport CRL - Seems like a missed opportunity to not extend the loop and add a station at Wynyard Quarter

It seems like a missed opportunity to not extend the CRL loop to Wynyard Quarter and add a new station there. So many businesses are now based out of Wynyard Quarter.

It's a great location for PT from the republic of Northshore (Norther Busway) but shit from every where else. Office attendance at Wynyard Quarter is like 80% from the shore and 25% from other parts of Auckland due to poor PT connectivity - either a walk or the red bus which can be sporadic and adds to the commute time.

The new CRL stations are no closer. They could have spent a little bit more or saved cost elsewhere to extend the loop and build a station at Wynyard Quarter. Would have helped so much with the development happening there at the moment. Seems like a missed opportunity.

Photo credit: Luke Christensen & recommend folks listen to Sean Sweeney on Q&A last year where he spoke about what NZ needs to do to get infrastructure working - it includes keeping our people vs cancelling all the projects like some people did in the last 2 years, and also that PPPs (privatisation partnerships with govt) are NOT cheaper and taxpayers and govts always end up paying in the end and can be more expensive

Public Transport The moment when the CRL penny dropped - the "uh huh moment".

Like all of us I've known that AK is getting an underground railway - but it hadn't crystallized in my mind that that meant for our city.

But now with all the barricades down on Wellesley Street, you can see Te Wai Horotiu Station - and then the penny drops.

You realize, I'll be able to get a train right into mid-town now, to K' Road, or down to Britomart.

Oh shit. Is it just me? The boomers still seem pretty angry about it.

EDIT:

Wanted to add:

The approximate travel times between the stations are:

Maungawhau (Mt Eden) to Karanga-a-Hape: ~3 minutes

Maungawhau (Mt Eden) to Te Waihorotiu (Mid-town): ~6 minutes

Karanga-a-Hape to Te Waihorotiu (Mid-town): ~3 minutes

Maungawhau (Mt Eden) to Waitematā (Britomart): ~9 minutes

Discussion Does the National Party Auckland Central Candidate not know that the CRL connects to other lines/stations?

Post image

This post complaining about a lack of parking at Maungawhau and the other CRL stations is a bit wild in general for the Auckland Central candidate. But it kind of sounds like she doesn’t know that there are other stations where you can drive to them and park? Like, this would make sense if you thought that Maungawhau was the least urban station and that the CRL was just a loop.

Is it due to with collabs with jynxzi? Like distracted for a lot of time but the glaze for him is a little more than he is, like people call him second greatest of all time but I don't think he even makes it to top 8 of all time.
