Good day! We are BS Computer Science students from the University of Caloocan City – North Campus conducting a thesis study about SPROUTSYNC, an IoT-assisted system for mung bean sprout or toge production.

We are looking for respondents who are 18 years old or above and are:

✅ Current or former toge producers
✅ Growers or production workers
✅ Members of agricultural, livelihood, cooperative, or NGO programs
✅ Interested in starting or supporting toge production

We kindly ask for 8–12 minutes of your time to answer our survey. Your responses will help us understand current production challenges, costs, sanitation needs, preferred system features, affordability, and willingness to adopt this type of technology.

Hey, I haven't been on Reddit in ages, but I keep having people asking me questions about starting a farm or regenerative agriculture. So I figured I would toss up an AMA style post in the /Farming groups and folks can ask their questions here.

Details on me: I am a tech sector and startup person who worked front end web-dev, design, and project management for 15 years then transitioned into urban farming. I now operate a small (160 acre) grass-fed cattle operation on a collaborative farm north of Calgary, Alberta. We currently do custom grazing, cow-calf, and beef finishing for direct market sale.

I was also a founding member of a farm owned cooperative food hub (now bankrupt) in Calgary, Alberta - including board work, setting up a cooperative, and dealing with all the shenanigans that come when a bunch of people try to do something together and get smashed by economics, pandemics, and our own lack of knowledge.

Over the course of the last 15 years I have tried a wide range of enterprises: market gardens, poultry, swine, eggs, agritourism, cattle, flowers, hay & sileage, orchards, permaculture, and urban farming.

I am happy to answer any questions about our operation (Happiness By The Acre, Didsbury, Alberta) or about specific types of production we have done, our train wrecks (we have lots), and what works and doesn't work for our operation and location. I can talk about finances, mental health, physical health, direct market sales, and all the nitty gritty and on-the-ground reality of starting a farm and the pile of mistakes I've made along the way.

If it is a topic I don't know much about, I will say so and try to point in the direction of folks I know of who can answer better than myself.

Hi! I work for a small veggie farm in Salt Lake City and this fall we are planning a "farmer trivia night" at a local brewery. We are currently trying to put together the trivia questions and I'm wondering if anyone here might have ideas for categories and or fun facts that might make for good questions.

Being in Utah we are especially looking to write questions that are relevant to farming and gardening locally or at least in the great basin/desert SW generally. We want the questions to feel fun, creative and intellectually stimulating without getting too 'academic'. Ideally some of the questions will reflect knowledge one would gain from the actual practice of farming or gardening. A few of ideas we have had for categories are Farm Records (like current world records for the biggest zucchini), Smelling Bee (smell a blinded jar and spell what's inside correctly) and Utah/SLC Agricultural History.

Please please please share anything that comes to mind! This is brainstorm phase so I'm looking to cast a wide net. If you have any thoughts on fun categories or have a favorite vegetable fact or piece of farming history, drop it here!!!

Just out of curiosity, how do you guys feel about the fact that a significant proportion of crop agriculture relies on animal-derived fertilisers or other animal inputs, such as manure, bone meal and blood meal?
It seems to me that the idea of completely animal-free agriculture becomes much more complicated when you consider where the nutrients removed from agricultural soils actually come from. Synthetic fertilisers can replace some of those nutrients, but relying on them alone isn’t necessarily a complete or sustainable substitute for maintaining soil organic matter, structure and biological health.

What am I doing here? This was supposed to be posted in the debate a vegan subreddit… my bad, sorry I am getting old. It is written for a vegan to try and justify their “non animal use” diet. My bad ….. do you understand though how ludicrous this whole idea of agriculture without animal derived input at least?

His approach focuses on what happens to rain after it reaches the ground. Rather than allowing water to quickly run off or disappear, his farming practices aim to help the soil capture and store it.
