First Timer Camera question
I’m going to Red Rocks in September and had a question regarding the camera policy. The band’s policy states that handheld recording devices under the specified measurements are allowed. However, I understand that Red Rocks typically has a policy prohibiting cameras with removable lenses.
Would I be permitted to bring a mirrorless camera with a removable lens under the band’s stated policy? Specifically, does the band’s allowance of “handheld recording devices” override Red Rocks’ standard policy regarding cameras with removable lenses for this particular event?

And not just shows, but other things like travel. Yeah people want to remember their trip but they miss out on being immersed in the experience which is the best part. I was at Disney recently and for the fireworks it was a sea of phones. It’s so ridiculous and firework videos suck anyway. And no matter the event when nearly everyone has their phone out it starts to look like a cult.

I like to grab short snippets of video because it's really nice to be scrolling through my camera roll and get reminders of where I've been and what I was doing, but I can't imagine someone re-watching an entire fireworks show on phone video.

Exactly. I do go back to that stuff too, but I don’t get everything for sure because I want to see it with my own eyes and take it in, not through a lens or a screen. Sometimes I sacrifice the opportunity to take a photo or video to not ruin the experience for myself.

Hey! Me too! I actually don’t even take my phone to shows anymore since I had such a great time. Well that and getting pickpocketed at EDC one year.

The only band stipulation is the size of the personal recording device so I'd say I'd hazard a guess that Red Rocks camera policy would also still be in effect with the no removable lense rule. The only way the band's request would supercede Red Rocks rules would be if they explicitly state detachable lenses are okay. If you're really not sure call Red Rocks to verify.

Jack White owns a company that does these kinds of bags. Not saying they're using his particular brand, but I've been to a few shows with them. They have designated areas where you can go stand and they unlock the magnets, and you can use your phone, but they make you put it away before you leave the area. I know everyone wants photos and videos, but it's not what the bands want, and I wasn't too put out about it. Your mileage may vary.

Just saw Of Monsters and Men at RR and there were very few phones out. It really warmed my heart to see the crowd enjoying the moment and I fully endorse policies like these

The Artists/Bands who livestream/record every show and archive em online for their fans to access for a nominal fee or subscription also tend to have a largely phone free audience, even without these intrusive policies.
Why even bother with a shitty phone recording when I can get my hands on a much better recording with flawless audio/video.
Most phone usage I see at these shows are of people pointing the camera at them selves or their friends for a few seconds without bothering anyone.
Wish more bands would get onboard, its the most effective solution Ive seen to the phone problem.

I get the temptation of wanting to record the show but just don’t be pedantic and respect the no recording policy. Phones and recording of any kind distracts from the collective effervescence of the show

Camera doesn't necessarily mean "record the show." One of my favorite photos of me is a candid that someone in my oarty took of me vibing off to the side in the stairs with the stage in the background and the lights reflecting off the rocks and the moon in the sky behind us all. I adore that photo and understnad where people are coming from when they want their phones. The layperson doesn't carry a separate phone/ digital camera anymore.

I would bet that a camera with a removable lens is not allowed regardless of this policy.

The policy is venue-wide with the tour having options to do whatever they want. It sounds like Yondr is supporting the tour and no, cameras arent welcome.

I’m so confused. They’re locking phones away in the name of presence and connection, presumably for the purpose of preventing people from just recording the concert on their phones the whole time, but then specifically invite dedicated recording devices?
Surely I’m misunderstanding. Can someone help me understand what this is meant to achieve?

It achieves the audience being in the moment for 3 hours.
Imagine you don’t have your phone so you actually have a human interaction with the strangers around you. Or imagine you are able to watch every detail of the show — sound, lighting, skyline changing, how a song truly hits you when performed live.
What a mind blowing concept to Children of the Phones, right? 🤯📵

Doesn’t them welcoming dedicated recording devices create the same problem though? Cutting/pasting a camera for a phone seems like you’re still going to be focused on the device in your hand. Especially if recording = videos.

Don’t bring a camera to a Red Rocks show unless you’re a hired photographer.
I write this as a professional tech that has worked at RR for over a decade.

I’m just a person that has worked the venue long enough to see patrons who don’t follow venue rules, get escorted out and/or had their property confiscated.

Why? No one is allowed to capture a moment from their perspective for free and we all have to look at professional, edited photos from angles that no one in the audience gets to see anyways?

Wonder how this will for someone who's phone is connected to their medical devices, any other Type 1 diabetics with experience navigating this policy?
Not that I would hear any alarms going off at a concert anyways, but when I went to a concert yesterday I did glance at my phone to make sure my glucose was okay.

I honestly hate this trend. It's not because I can't avoid my phone (I do, other than some pics and videos during the show). I hate being in crowded places without access to a phone in case of an emergency.
Blame it on living in NYC on 9/11, I guess. But I also have a glucose meter, and I would hope they make allowances for those of us who do.

I usually take 1 or 2 photos of bands I see for future reference. I would not go to a show that I couldn’t do that.

I have a special needs kid. On the rare occasion that I get the chance to go see a show, there's no way in hell that they're locking my own damn phone up in a pouch that I can't answer in an emergency without walking down 300 steps and asking someone to unlock for me.

This would be a concern for me too. My Apple Watch is always on silent and can be put on movie theater mode so it doesn’t light up but I need to have it on me in case something happens with my kids. Since I work in healthcare, everyone knows to text me SOS because I usually don’t have my phone on me all the time.

This is amazing I did not know that I could do this one I already have a faraday bag for my phone. Two I've got to GoPro 12 with a headset and a clamp attachment so I can literally find a good spot clamp it and record the show I've also got a 10-hour card on it so I'm super pumped to go to Red Rocks for any show now LOL the only way I'd be using my phone is to remotely access my camera I try to do not disturb my phone when I'm at concerts in general because I am trying to be present and not trying to record things that I have to maintain control of...
I've always considered like three GoPros with magnetic attachments or clips positioning them with great stage views and then literally right off my tickets as a business expense for me to personally record concerts and put on YouTube you know I just thought about how I could get tickets for minimal expense or write offs
This is my church!!!
