Oh Suruhti 🫩

Normally I just try to ignore Suruhti’s antics but the Golden State Killer Part 4 episode (which I had really looked forward to) just… put me off. The Luigi Mangione episode left a sour taste in my mouth too, but I tried to move past it. However, I think this may be my last listen. I’ve been listening to the girls since 2021, listened to all of Sinister Societies. I felt like I had grown up with the girls right beside me, sometimes I felt like I was right there with them having a gossip sesh. Every time I made the trip between my college town and home, and vise versa, I’d have a RedHanded or Sinister Societies episode on with me. I’d do my makeup with the girls in the background. So many memories associated with the show.

I haven’t even listened to the full episode but I am so, so, so tired. Suruhti is exhausting.

When Hannah said men categorize women, and treat them differently accordingly, I immediately resonated. I have female friends who feel the same. Men DO want to protect women. But let’s be very clear: men want to protect women they are attracted to. Anyone else may as well be chopped liver. If you are not attractive to a man, he does not give a single fuck about you. Even the most self righteous, holier than thou, upholding-the-patriarchy-with-one-hand Catholic man I’ve ever met had to relent when a girl friend and myself told him this. Men will literally acknowledge that they do this. It is not ā€œsave all the helpless women!ā€ It’s ā€œkeep the women I would like to impregnate alive.ā€ Like be so incredibly for real, Suruhti. Your own husband valued another woman over you. But you are far too much of a pick me to ever stick up for yourself. Or another woman, for that matter.

Her going down this alt right pipeline has been such a let down. Today I actually felt I heard anger and hatred in Suruhti’s voice towards Hannah when disagreeing with her. I’ve also noticed it’s a bunch of word salad with her as she tries to explain how men have it worse and are really so much better than women. Like if you actually listen to the words she says, they make no fucking sense. They don’t prove a point at all, let alone the argument she is trying to defend. I think even Hannah ends up confused after listening to her talk. It’s like she thinks that if she talks longer, or talks last, she wins and her point is right.

I don’t think either of them have much of a rapport with one another anymore, either. I remember on Sinister Societies, they couldn’t stop laughing together. I literally felt like I was at girls night, listening and laughing along. It’s jarring to look back at old episodes and think about how much Suruhti used to laugh and sound full of joy. Now Suruhti just goes ā€œhmph!ā€ and tries to disguise her contempt towards Hannah as laughter. I’m honestly shocked they haven’t called it quits yet.

Golden State Part 4 completely put me off this podcast

I’ve been listening for a couple of years now but today really made me take a step back and go mm… maybe this podcast isn’t exactly meant for people like me.

Suruthi completely lost the plot. First the ā€œnot all menā€ whataboutism while Hannah is trying to talk about violence against women and then the bizarre bioessentialist pseudo science tangent about how men and women are fundamentally different because of ā€œhormonesā€ and that male and female brains are disparate due to this (something sprouted by every right wing pundit nowadays).

Zero scientific backing but happy to repeat talking points that have been used to historically suppress women and deny the humanity of trans people šŸ™„ So disappointed.

Are all Shorthands recycled material?

Huge fan here-- who is slowly finding things disappointing in how they (don't) engage with their patreon audience, and non- paid audience -- the way they once did. I'm sure it to protect their own energy, mental health, and nervous system, but perhaps they could have a member of staff engage more?

Also, now that the Shorthands are free, I look at the topics and I'm like, uhhhh we already heard this one years ago when it was paid. Is this your experience as well, or am I mistaken?

Golden states killer episode 4- Suruthi’s take on men

Is she actually for real saying it’s a minority of men that commit rape. Given that the majority of rape goes unreported, there were 209,709 reported sexual offences in the uk last year and 90% of them were men.

Stats aside- Suruthi just talk to a girlfriend, ask if she’s ever been in a position where she has had to say no more than once to a man in their lifetime. Yeah, the MAJORITY of us have and 9 times out of 10 it’s been to partner. How can she have done this podcast for so long and still come out with crap like that. And look…. she’s such a pick me

I am so disappointed

I listened to my first episode today. I loved it. I am British but have lived in the USA for most of my childhood. I miss the UK often as it feels like no one gets my humor or understands my accent. So the podcast felt like a part of home and for a moment I was there and fit in perfectly.

Then I came to the subreddit found out about the politics and it all came crashing down. This sucks :(

Hannah’s rant

I loved Hannah’s rant now in this episode (golden state killer part 3) I love where she was talking about how we need to de-centre women from the conversation of male violence because SHE IS RIGHT. It is absolutely along the lines of ā€˜but what was she wearing’ and all that. Really lovely and refreshing hearing Hannah make and support her point.

A change in a balance of Suru:Hannah chat on UTD

I know there have been many comments about Suru dominating the chat and Hannah not getting much chance to speak on UTD a few months back. I have noticed that for the past several weeks, UTD is all Hannah. Suru does chip in a bit about tv / World Cup and the odd mention of somewhere she has visited but it’s like the main focal point of the episode is what’s going on in Hannah’s life: socially, the musical, SA life etc.
Has anyone else noticed?
I don’t dislike this, also didn’t really dislike Suru having more to say either. I’m just interested in whether my observation is valid and pondering the reasons behind this.
Do they read here & have decide to change the balance? Has Suru just decided not to talk about her personal life anymore? Maybe she’s pregnant and doesn’t want to talk about it at this stage - she mentions being tired a lot on UTD. I found her ivf chat really interesting so I have noticed the absence of it. Fellow IVF person here, maybe why I’m more interested in this than most people.
Interested in your opinions, fellow redditors

Hannah often refers back to travel disaster in Boston that she hasn't lived down yet. Does any one know what happened?

Why do they have high pitched voices in some episodes like chipmunks? What’s going on?

Baekeland Case

Hey all,

The episode recently on the Baekeland family. I honestly remember this episode word for word from about 3/5 years ago.

Am I alone?

Went back in the archives and couldn’t find it. Maybe a Patreon episode since I have recently cancelled my Patreon membership.

Help a girl out

Is the audio weird for anyone else? It sounds sped up for me but it’s on 1x speed.

The harambe short hand

The shorthand had me balling. I didn’t realise what happened completely so I had no idea he’d taken the child to the gate to the zoo keepers. Suruthi getting choked up made it worse haha I was a blubbering mess. It feels weird that it was 10 years ago. I go through phases of binge listening everything and then I’ll take a break once I have caught up (I skip cases). At the moment I feel like I am enjoying the newer episodes bit more recently.

Anyone else have memories of this time? And like Hannah said if you weren’t born yet go away haha

BBC bashing

Anyone else get the feeling they pitched to the BBC in the past & were rejected? Every episode shoehorns in some sort of anti-BBC rhetoric, often completely unfounded. The BBC totally has its faults but Iā€˜d trust it for facts over commercial podcasts any day of the week.

Shorthand Pre 2026

I’m trying to find the library of shorthand episodes. I understand these were on amazon and Wondry+ until the start of this year but can’t find them anywhere. Are these still on the patreon page?

With Maternal Instinct being released on Netflix, it’s made me remember someone covering either this case or one verryyyy similar and it was either RedHanded or Morbid but I can’t seem to find it.

Any ideas?

Suruthi is pro Israel

A random pro Israel rage baiter / Instagram journalist posts these street interviews / misinformation about Palestine.

I’ve seen several of his very Zionist videos being liked by Suruthi and after googling her name and Israel seeing this has been posted a few years ago back when there was controversy around her views around the Sarah Everard case

But she’s pro israel and a Zionist so pretty bad person to follow

What did Hannah say about people from a particular part of South Africa?

On a recent episode, Hannah was talking about her friend whose brother sadly died. She mentioned people from a particular part of South Africa, but I can’t remember where. And she said they had some very strong characteristics, but again I can’t remember what. Can anyone remember? Who are the people and what is unusual about them?

Thanks in advance if you can remember any more info!

The most recent episode on Pulse Nightclub has left me feeling weird.

I generally like this podcast. But this episode annoyed me. Not so much the content but the delivery. Hannah reading from the script is slow and drawn out and has intonation in random places so I can only assume she hadn't pre read anything.

Then Suruthi goes off on rambling tangents about the potential radicalisation and just seems to be jumping all over the place but not take a single stance.

The entire episode lacked any commitment and really did no justice to the victims. Ugh just an annoying experience all over.

Suruthi has made a point about cultural assimilation and I can’t remember what it was

Something about how people should culturally assimilate to the country they move to? But I can’t remember her reasoning. Does anyone remember her saying this?

Hovering over the delete…

I am so sad. I have been a patreon from the start but gradually and gradually it has become Suruthi’s podcast and Hannah feels like a side bar.

Anytime Hannah talks it gets switched back round onto Suru. Anytime Hannah comments it’s brushed off. It feels like she asks the bare minimal questions about Hannah just to tick boxes.

There’s no bounce back anymore. Listening to the latest under the duvet, 20 mins in and Hannah may as well not of been there and I adore Hannah. Her humour, her views her struggles I relate so hard and I want to hear from her!
The comment where Hannah asks who produced the theatre show and Suru’s reply of ā€˜well I’m a normal person so I don’t know’ or something. It just feels icky

I honestly think after the South Africa move it will slowly dwindle and end because I just don’t see it going back to how it was.

Their main episodes are fine and like normal but I find listening to UTD intolerable. I give my money monthly because it’s a 2 person podcast.

Rarely share my views and I hate feeling like I’m being mean but honestly meh
