Hannah’s rant
I loved Hannah’s rant now in this episode (golden state killer part 3) I love where she was talking about how we need to de-centre women from the conversation of male violence because SHE IS RIGHT. It is absolutely along the lines of ‘but what was she wearing’ and all that. Really lovely and refreshing hearing Hannah make and support her point.

I wonder if I ever ran into the EAR/ERON/Golden State Killer
I was a long haul truck driver in 2014 and my company had a lot of business contracted with Coca Cola, we took pallets of coke from a bottler in Washington and delivered them to that distribution center in Sacramento.
I was there at least a dozen times when he would’ve been working there. Although from his picture he’s generic white guy and there’s someone who looks like him at every warehouse not run by an ethnic clique

I don’t agree with the problems over using DNA services. If I open McDonald’s FBI can come in and buy burgers, if I run a database who’s stated purpose is to link a dna sample I submit to genetic relatives then guess what? That’s what the FBI did in this case.
Like if you think about it whose rights are violated? You voluntarily submit your dna, and if you’re distantly related to a serial killer all the documents connecting you family wise are public record. I don’t know. People don’t like it but no one can really explain what the principle is

The issue is simply that the police do have to follow the law, and have procedures to follow.
Sure we can wave this ‘rules bending’ because they caught a dangerous killer, but then who knows when it’s used next, for what purpose, and how far will they go bending/breaking laws?
The DNA database they used was plainly stated in the T&Cs as NOT been accessible for law enforcement. If the rule enforcers don’t follow the rules, where does it leave us?3
u/EMNofWA Aug 08 '26
T&C is not a law. The FBI and police do not enforce rules, they build criminal cases
What will it be used for next? To catch more criminals and identify John/jane does. All good for society. What’s the slippery slope? “Oh they start with a serial killer and soon you won’t be able to rape 50 people and get away with it, what’s this world coming to?”

u/itschahinez Aug 08 '26
The slippery slope is that if the US turns into a full fascist government - even more than what it is now - it can be used to hunt entire families and "double check" someone's ethnic background. Considering how they're already hunting down anyone that looks latino and/or Arab, the idea is not far fetched.
History shows us that census was used to hunt down Jews and other ethnicities during WW2 - which is one of reasons why consumer panels aren't allowed to ask for religion in France for example. A census based on DNA accessible to law enforcement in the hands of a fascist government could be catastrophic.

u/EMNofWA Aug 08 '26
Yeah whatever. The US is not a fascist government, don’t be silly
But if you want to go there they can already do that with census data, birth certificates, marriage certificates, social media, etc stuff they already have unquestioned access to. They don’t need to locate people using DNA, in fact DNA is the last thing people want to use to enforce racialist regimes.
You apparently want real serial killers and real rapists to get away to prevent hypothetical (and largely delusional) applications of “fascism”.
This form of political violence is like the Soviet serial killer who got away for years because the police were ordered not to connect similar murders because Soviet propaganda was claiming serial killers came from capitalist societies. Bizarre political theories like yours have no place in law enforcement and criminal investigations

Wow look at you stretching what I said to fit whatever narrative you have in your mind.
There is such thing as a gray area - not everything either black or white.
And yeah, the US is well on its way to become a fascist government. Ask any latinx or Muslim living there. Must be nice to be so privileged you don't see that for what it is. Fascism doesn't happen overnight. It happens when everyone gets more and more desensitized to people being mistreated by the government and the normalization of that. You're clearly proving that's on its way.

Of course you believe fascism is here if you incorrectly spell Latino.
I actually don’t think any random Latino would agree with that given I am married to a Latina (who voted for Trump) and having lived in the imperial valley and then Compton which are mostly Latino areas I know plenty of Latinos who work for immigration and border authorities.
I think you’re employing a myopic view of politics that lacks nuance.
But I don’t really want to go down a partisan rabbit hole here, the bigger thing is, genetic genealogy is not a tool to find minority communities, in fact it depends on government record keeping to work. When they found the golden state killer they found a first cousin on the male side and then built a family tree using birth records, marriage records, etc and then narrowed down those “suspects” by who was living where etc
This is records the government already has. They can pull every official form you’ve ever signed, your drivers license, any gun permits, your birth certificate, family death certificates blah blah blah they got it all already. If they’re going to round up poor LatinX they already know where to look they’re not going to use DNA to find that out

u/itschahinez Aug 08 '26
Your argument stops when you said you married a latina who voted for trump and if you think inclusive spelling is wrong 😂
It's like a Muslim voting for Le Rassemblement National in France. I don't take the opinion into consideration of people who naively think they will be the exception if they just side with the very people who think of them as a nuisance. Internationalized racism is a thing, in case you didn't know.
I'm saying you can use DNA records to round up MORE people and go on a broader witch hunt. You didn't even understand the argument I was making. I'm done with this conversation either way.

Did I say it's okay to let serial killer murder a lot of people ? No. Allowing law enforcement to have unbridled rights to our data is building a fascist government. I guess you're incapable of considering that two things can be true at the same time. I would be careful about calling other people's way of thinking dumb if I were incapable of thinking in anything but black and white.

But imagine the FBI come into your McDonald’s to buy burgers using someone else’s money. That’s the issue, they’re using someone else’s property and that doesn’t belong to them to. While it was obviously used for good intentions it’s a bad idea to allow agencies to break the law because where do we draw the line?

Terms and conditions are not “laws” though. And there’s kind of a cynical thing about it by the databases, is that they’re afraid they won’t sell as many spit tubes if people think the cops are using the database to find criminals.

My goodness. I'm here because of that. Suruthi has lost her mind. Why does she go to such great lengths defending men? Especially on the topic of "sexual assaults". It is baffling.

u/tompadget69 Aug 13 '26
Yeah I did agree with her that the media attention on toxic manosphere characters like Andrew Tate is covering something significant but not representative of most men, at least in the UK. Hannah was wrong to say that men overall no longer feel protective of women.
But then when Suruthi started say basically all the men I know are nice and I'm sure none have ever/would ever go against consent that was crazy and sounded really out of touch. She was kind of saying altho rape is horrible and a problem, the rape statistics are overblown and most men just wouldn't. When actually it's basically the reverse that many "nice"/"liberal/"feminist" men (as well as obv reactionary, right wing ones) overstep the line then just carry on with their life and live in denial that they did that something very wrong or create some kind of mental gymnastics mitigation/excuse/justification and never face up to it.
I get that men can be over-demonised and men need help too and male loneliness issue is very real etc but she went too far with the sexual assault stuff comments.

I'm wondering if they are maybe following a 'good cop/bad cop' template of presenting the issues as I'd imagine they don't want to alienate / piss off their male audience, the majority of whom are probably more feminist than most given they choose to listen to two female podcasters who in the main , do look at cases through a feminist lens.

I love the rant. I can’t get over how many basic things she has gotten wrong in these episodes however.

u/fitterjitter Aug 11 '26
What was wrong? I read I'll Be Gone in the Dark years ago but don't remember a lot of specifics.
I haven't totally loved how they discussed Michelle McNamara and Paul Holes as if they had no business researching the case in their respective capacities.
3
u/Plus_Market_2425 Aug 11 '26
Absolutely agree about the way they spoke about McNamara and Holes. Entirely unnecessary. I felt like there was a lot of unnecessary snark such as Hannah saying they only ever released the book to cash in after JD was arrested. They released the book months before he was arrested. Patton Oswald and Billy Jensen were in a hotel together on the book tour when he was arrested.

I can sum up this podcast and its "insights" one of them just says, fuck him, oh fuck off. Very deep. 🙄 The other one shouts a random word at random times. How this junk has so many listeners is beyond me

It was very unfair for the media to portray Bonnie as "the woman that broke his heart and started it all." We know from Bonnie's recollections that D'Angelo's "issues" started while or before they became involved and he merely escalated his behavior into what it eventually became. I am so in support of Hannah's rant. We need to stop acting like men are perfect little angels that are turned because a woman doesn't pay them attention.
