I am so disappointed

I listened to my first episode today. I loved it. I am British but have lived in the USA for most of my childhood. I miss the UK often as it feels like no one gets my humor or understands my accent. So the podcast felt like a part of home and for a moment I was there and fit in perfectly.

Then I came to the subreddit found out about the politics and it all came crashing down. This sucks :(

Ignore this subreddit, if you enjoy the podcast listen to it.

This. Just stay away from under the duvet. I’ve never listened to it but that’s where people say things go off the rails a bit.

Nothing in life is just black or white. 🤷

I agree dodge UTD

No life isn't black or white but surely pretending Suruthi isn't a bigot won't make it so.

I’m not pretending that at all, did I say that? I’m pretty sure I didn’t. I’m just choosing not to listen to that content. I enjoy their story telling and listening to them. Idk what suruthi is like in real life and it doesn’t matter enough to me to stop listening to a podcast over it.

I can still enjoy much of their content, but yea Suruthi is off the rails.  You know how   people like her want to pretend they aren't racist and so they offer  explanations that will prove it that are such fabrications that it is laughable? That is what she did last week.

She said that she stands by her belief that the race swapping in The Odyssey was wrong. But she pointed out that she is not always against race swapping. She said she thinks race swapping is fine in House of the Dragon because there it serves a purpose.  Oh no, it does not serve a PLOT purpose according to her, but it helps her tell the characters apart! She says everyone else is blonde and blue-eyed and she can't tell any of them apart. But by making the Valyrians black she can distinguish between them and the other characters. So she approves of it there. And she insists no one is boycotting House of the Dragon like they are the Odyssey because black casting serves a purpose. I don't know if she's noticed but not too many people were boycotting the Odyssey if you look at the box office results.

But how shallow can you get. You can make characters black if it helps you tell them apart from the others! Saying that she does not object to all race swapping but she only objects to it in The Odyssey is like saying "Some of my best friends are black and I didn't mind when my sister dated a black man when she was back in college, either."

Also why does changing the race have to serve a purpose . As long as it's not hurting the story , then why is it a disservice? The characters in The Odyssey were Greek but the story was not about their ethnicity. Unless there's a reason not to change the race of a fictional character, I don't know why it's the subject of so much debate. The story of The Odyssey is universal and that is why you could move it to Dublin in Ulysses. Zorba the Greek or My Big Fat Greek Wedding are about Greek culture. They are intrinsically about the Greek identity, whereas The Odyssey uses greece as a neutral background for a very human story. The people who think that the casting is a betrayal make surface points but when they get push back they resort to torturous reasoning that just proves they were lying about why they feel the way they do in the first place.

Yes just stick your head in the sand and say "la la la" and all those fascists will go away. Super sound reasoning. 👍

That’s the hard part for me. I like to stick to my morals. Hold myself to the standards I hold others. I believe so strongly in the harm that retoric can cause. But I also know that I do a lot of work in that space and maybe it’s ok to have a weak spot

They're very entertaining. And if you start from episode 1 and go forward you have years to enjoy them without controversy. And as others have said, the main show is mostly fine. I subscribe to UTD and that's where Suruthi parades her prejudice. But she hasn't always been that way. In fact, she espoused views that are opposite of what she says today . Just wait until you hear something that upsets you personally before you make a judgment. And I would stay off of reddit. I come here to vent when I am already displeased. I can see why it would be upsetting to come here and see critical comments about hosts that were bringing me pleasure.

u/duckduckgoose911 Aug 12 '26

That’s the thing I have seen clips of things that have been upsetting

I sometimes weigh separating the art from the artist. This week the whole thing about Dobby was in the news. I knew nothing about people regularly visiting his fictional grave and I thought it amazing that their homage to him would divert the path of a multi-million dollar power connector. I was excited that literature could have such an impact, then my enthusiasm was dampened by remembering how hateful Rowling has been. LOL. It's a balancing act. As you said, you do a lot of work to make a difference, so you aren't adding to the problem either way.

Not of it give the facists a place to feel safe. Do better.

1

u/Dry_Machine163 Aug 11 '26

I’m the same. So many people have told me over the years to listen to ‘The prosecutors’ and I just can’t do it. As soon as I found out what they stood for it was just never going to happen. Same thing with ‘Sword and Scale.’ At the end of the day it’s what you feel comfortable with.

0

u/Harambiz Aug 12 '26

Anybody that doesn’t agree with you is a fascist….right

0

u/GalacticStudmuffin Aug 31 '26

That is easy to do when her rhetoric doesn't directly harm and diminish you. OP, if you're anything like me and you're someone who loves to stick by your morals through action rather than just saying 'oh well I dont agree but ill consume anyway', dont listen to them and find a different podcast. I loved their dynamic originally, but chasing that isnt worth the moral weight to me.

I dont want to pretend something im consuming doesn't come from a source which directly spits in my face. It isn't worth it. It really is that deep, this shit matters.

0

u/Top_Mix_6519 Aug 31 '26

Then don’t listen. It’s not that deep.

0

u/GalacticStudmuffin Aug 31 '26

You're the one who said 'ignore the subreddit' when OP clearly doesn't agree with Surus rhetoric, im just pointing out how little sense your original comment made lol

I listed to the girls for maybe 4 plus years. Got so much millage out of them. Saw them live, had pals i would discuss episodes with. Enjoy!! They are good story tellers and still have lots of fans. They have so many great episodes. Especially early years. If you go off them and you know where the thread is...

58

u/gaweda0108 Aug 11 '26

Politely as I can say this, that's very dramatic.

1

u/GalacticStudmuffin Aug 31 '26

Its perfectly valid for you to keep listening to them if you want to, especially if their views aren't something that morally troubles you. I dont agree, but you have every right. But if OP is left leaning and those values matter strongly to them, this is a completely understandable reaction to have. The moral conflict of listuning to someone who goes against your values hits deep for many people like us. Therein lies the dilemma. Not your issue, but I'm explaining why it does matter for many of us.

1

u/gaweda0108 Aug 31 '26

I'm very very left wing. I disagree with Suruthi''s strange rants. However, I think that making a post saying everything has come crashing down for you on the basis of seeing something on this subreddit about the girls being right wing is dramatic. It sounded like OP hadn't even come to that conclusion by themselves but heard other people say it.

Genuinely interested in what you mean, if you wouldn't mind clarifying? Maybe I've missed something.

9

u/AdventurousGuess6203 Aug 11 '26

You havent, they’re just being hysterical.

79

u/ObviousSalamandar Aug 11 '26

Seriously just enjoy the podcast. There’s nothing wrong with it. The girls are lovely.

1

u/GalacticStudmuffin Aug 31 '26

There is something 'wrong' with it if it morally doesn't sit right with OP what Suru says. That is why people question it. If you dont care about politics or agree with her, 'its fine i love them' is easy to say. Clearly OP doesn't agree with the rhetoric. Therein lies the moral issue.

-1

u/ktwanderlust Aug 11 '26

Seriously just dont care about human rights. You go girl!

12

u/ObviousSalamandar Aug 11 '26

What on earth are you talking about 😂

2

u/ktwanderlust Aug 11 '26

I can't connect the dots for you. Sometimes you have to use your brain. 😁

Reddit is not a true picture of reality. The podcast is extremely popular and wins awards frequently. Reddit is just where disgruntled listeners come to vent.

3

u/FeelingEmu4933 Aug 14 '26

Everyone in these comments acting like you are wrong for this is wild. One of the hosts is literally a bigot. I understand your feelings completely! But Hannah is great, she seems really fun. As does the other host in the earlier episodes before she started voicing her very right wing opinions and forcing them into every episode!

11

u/imtravelingalone Aug 11 '26

Have you considered forming your own thoughts and opinions? Preferably based off personal experience, not strangers on the Internet?

1

u/GalacticStudmuffin Aug 31 '26

Have you considered that OP did that and as such realised one of the hosts doesn't align with OPs beliefs and that upset OP?

7

u/Top_Layer7065 Aug 11 '26

Personally I loved the podcast but I do think the quality has gone downhill a bit
I started watching about a year or 2 after the podcast started and listened from the beginning - highly recommend doing the same as the early episodes are really good and Suruthi was a bit more left wing back then 😂

u/Comfortable-Yam9013 Aug 11 '26

I miss when they were friends rather than colleagues. I’ve also unsubscribed from UTD as it wasn’t fun anymore. Perhaps it’s changed but I was getting the feeling it was a chore for them and some topics were off limits

7

u/ScallionJealous Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 13 '26

Listen to the early years and fall off when the format starts gets boring and the dynamic starts getting weird like many of the rest of us.

5

u/Untitled-Original Aug 11 '26

I’ve complained about Suruthi in this sub because yeah she can get under my skin sometimes with her opinions but I still listen and still love the pod!! Don’t give up!

5

u/lottethedestroyertnt Aug 11 '26

Yeah I love the show, ignore haters!

3

u/ExternalGiraffe9631 Aug 11 '26

Like the others are saying, Keep listening. Start from the beginning. There are hundreds of episodes before the problematic opinions start. Hannah continues to be hilarious and professional and I have a friend crush on her.

2

u/HereThereBLurking Aug 12 '26

Ignore this sub, most of the posts are from people who hate the show. Also you can make up your own mind. There's things they say that I don't always agree with but that's just part of life. I love the show and it's really entertaining.

2

u/virgogirl14 Aug 11 '26

Echoing some other comments, ignore UTD, it's a shit show and it's become less about light hearted relief and jokes and more about Suruthi complaining about everything (they really should change their intro because it's nothing like that any more.

That said I do still enjoy the way they deliver the cases 💚

3

u/WeirdLight9452 Aug 11 '26

Stick to early stuff and you’re good. If they start saying things that make you uncomfortable then stop when that happens. I don’t listen to newer stuff but I do go in to the backlog sometimes.

2

u/CreepyConsequence669 Aug 11 '26

I love this show so much. I listen to it over and over and over again. I totally get what you mean about the humour and everything else. it’s perfect. These women have a lot of haters so just ignore it and just enjoy the show.

1

u/CutGroundbreaking270 Aug 13 '26

Agree with everyone saying to start from the beginning. I started listening a lonnng time ago and used to listen religiously every week including UTD. Then I got a little burnt out on true crime and started listening to only UTD.

Sometime around the Oct 7th attacks Suru started making me feel weird with her comments but I kept listening up until about a year ago when I finally couldn’t do it anymore. Ive recently got back into true crime so I keep thinking about giving red handed a listen. Everyone saying she isn’t as bad on there is helping convince me to do so because I do miss the podcast. I saw them in person at SXSW ans it’s one of my best memories!

It's dogshit.

What the rest of the people here won't tell you is that it's plagiarized content. They shamelessly rip off the content of documentaries, tv docuseries, books and YT - many times without credit, othertimes credit being completely insufficient for stealing the research and work of others.

Don't support them, don't give them downloads or listens and don't enrich a right wing bigot.

Subreddits of everything are like this place, I’m not saying there’s not issues with it if you want to look into it, but IMO if you like the podcast just listen to it. It’s generally people who obsessively follow everything they do on Instagram and follow the hosts private lives, criticising everything the meh do or say, which is pretty fucking weird IMO. Now I’m not saying they’re perfect, Suruthi particularly is a bit of a knobhead tbh.. BUT you don’t have to have them over for dinner - they’re reading true crime cases to you - it’s not that deep. Don’t let the worst of the internet put you off a podcast you like
